[flexcoders] Detecting Flash Player standalone menu events

2009-10-05 Thread Craig
Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction with an
integration issue I'm currently facing. The application I'm writing is going to
be hosted on a client's platform that uses some kind of queuing mechanism to
preload and schedule content that is to be delivered to an external screen.
Apparently, the way it works is that it uses Standalone flash player to host
any flash content. The content gets preloaded into this player, then is
immediately 'stopped' (using the Flash Player's Stop menu) until the platform
decides its ready to go to screen. When it goes to screen, Flash Player's
'Play' menu item is triggered, which is my queue to start my application. So my
question is simple; does anyone know if I can hook up to those events, and if
so, how? I'm guessing they're something to do with the timeline, but I'm not a
CS3/4 developer, and I'm struggling to find any info on what exactly they do
and the implications of them on SWFs developed in Flex.

Any help much appreciated,
Craig

RE: [flexcoders] custom itemrender flicker

2009-10-05 Thread Alex Harui
It depends on how you coded the renderer. Our list classes have very general
and somewhat inefficient update strategies because we want to make sure most
collection updates renderer correctly. I haven't looked at how Spark List
thinks, but mx:List will refresh all renderers even if only one item changes
because it doesn't know if another renderer might have "look-ahead" and also
care about the item even though its data item is some other item in the
collection.

You might be better off suppressing the setItemAt if it is the same.

Hey Alex, thanks a lot for your reply. So it is *proper* behaviour that if you
setItemAt in a custom itemrenderer that the whole control is rebuilt visually?
Incidentally I am using Flex 4, so this might be of even more interest.

I have a SkinnableDataContainer with an ArrayCollection dataprovider that holds
custom objects ('reports' in this case).

If my current collection has:

 1. Report #1 = Name: 1stReportName, Path: 1stReportPath
 2. Report #2 = Name: 2ndReportName, Path: 2ndReportPath
And then I do a myArrayCollection.setItemAt(Report1, 0), which basically sets
the first item to the same report it currently has. The itemrenderer empties of
all items, then re-displays them, causing a flicker or flash that is noticeable
on a slow computer.

Wouldn't it make more sense for the itemrender NOT to re-build itself from
scratch on every change? What if you had 100 items and u onl;y set one item?

Thanks a lot!

Baz

If I have a custom item render based on an ArrayCollection with 10 times, and
just for fun, I loop through those 10 items and setItemAt the exact same values
that are already there - on screen the list of items reloads in a sense,
re-building itself to the exact same values. I would like that in such a case,
the on-screen controls know that they are the same as before and not to rebuild
themselves. Is this possible? Can I intercept some event to double check
whether they are the same or different?

The goal of course, is to have this behaviour even if one some items changed.
For example if I change only the 10th item, I would expect only the 10th item
to refresh, no the whole collection.

Thanks for any ideas!

P.S. I am not useing refresh() on the ArrayCollection is it set to auto-update.
Also, all my setItemAt calls are done in commitProperties()

I have an 8 gig version of the first gen ipod touch and have upgraded

"Trading Stuff" and "That Roach Game" will not install. "Red Hood"

[flexcoders] Imagesnapshot Doesn't Capture

2009-10-05 Thread kristiansalvesen
Hi,

I have an application that has a TileList that is populated with images or swfs
from an external 3rd party website. At first the TileList is set to
visible=false and then with some logic it is set to visible=true I then want to
take an ImageSnapShot of the TileList populated with all the images. This works
when running the code just from FlexBuilder as i am developing/debugging but
when i uploaded the application to my webserver the Application just "freezes"
when trying to create the ImageSnapShot. Anyone has any ideas of what is going
on here.

Thanks,

Yes to the global error handling! :)

Flash Player 10.1 will address memory issues (currently halves current apps
out of the box).

It will also increase performance by 35%. I'm sure they're addressing the
issues mobile app development faces.

It depends on how you wrote the renderer. You can try overriding the "function
set data()" to check for changes to the object referenced by the renderer, but
then if some sub-property changes, the renderer will not update.

Might be better to understand why it flickers when updating.

It's not designed as a replacement for Flash in Safari; rather, it lets you

I think it is very good news, but I dont think its good news if you expect
to be doing stuff with flex.

http://whydoeseverythingsuck.com/2009/10/adobe-announces-flash-can-build-iphone.html

In summary, given that there has been no mention of flex in the
announcement, and the focus in the announcement on performance, I suspect
flex is either not supported, or for performance reasons, not encouraged at
this time, again for performance reasons.

I hope someone from adobe can chime in here.

Here's my take. Flex is just a framework built on AS3. This middleware
compiler should be able to compile Flex AS3 code into native iPhone code no
problem.

The new framework should also help reduce the weight of your app and make it
run faster.

This is really great news. Our skills just got a lot more valuable today.

[flexcoders] Detecting Flash Player standalone menu events

2009-10-05 Thread Craig Shaw
Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction with an
integration issue I'm currently facing. The application I'm writing is going
to be hosted on a client's platform that uses some kind of queuing mechanism
to preload and schedule content that is to be delivered to an external
screen. Apparently, the way it works is that it uses Standalone flash player
to host any flash content. The content gets preloaded into this player, then
is immediately 'stopped' (using the Flash Player's Stop menu) until the
platform decides its ready to go to screen. When it goes to screen, Flash
Player's 'Play' menu item is triggered, which is my queue to start my
application. So my question is simple; does anyone know if I can hook up to
those events, and if so, how? I'm guessing they're something to do with the
timeline, but I'm not a CS developer, and I'm struggling to find any info on
what exactly they do and the implications of them on SWFs developed in Flex.

Any help much appreciated,
Craig

(all except iPhone)

H. Nice looking tree.

My brother used to work for Sprint/Nextel, and he told me how they basically
laughed in Apple's faces, and told them that the iPhone would fail, and that
Apple had no clue about the phone business. Who's laughing now? Let's be
honest, all these other phones look absolutely dated in comparison. I know,
everyone doesn't want an iPhone, fine. Sure there's a non-iPhone market out
there, but the app sales on these phones are horrible. So, what's the point?
iPhone app sales are exploding. Apple actually delivered that holy grail of
making the phone a serious profit center.

A great user experience is what made Flash the success it is. The iPhone is
successful for the same reason. Any platform that does not deliver the
experience the user wants, will not do as well. So, I can't bring myself to get
evenly slightly excited about this. I'm a lot more excited to see how the
makers of the Pocket God iPhone app used Flash animation and converted it into
animation for the iPhone. If "full flash" on these mobile devices means
addressing the problems of memory leaks, high cpu, and low battery life, than
they have made a big step. These are likely reasons why Flash is not on iPhone
today.

But if Adobe is spending valuable resources making "full Flash" for Android, I
have to seriously question the business case. Yes, it's a good thing, and I
hope Android succeeds. But it wouldn't be surprising if Adobe spent more money
in development than the entire amount of money the whole non-Apple industry
made back in app sales. What's going to sell more copies of Flash Pro? The
ability to do Android? Or the ability to do iPhone?

In the meantime, iPhone is continuing to eat up market share in big chunks and
racking up huge sales. That's the forest.

You're welcome. My boss owns an iPhone and wants everything we build to run on

without a jailbreak.

Some wording from the press release caught my eye: "The Apple iPhone SDK
license terms do not allow runtime interpreted code, so Adobe is not able to
deliver Flash Player in Safari on the iPhone without support from Apple.
Applications for the iPhone built with Adobe Flash Professional CS5 do not
include any runtime interpreted code."

So the apps built with CS5 will "not include any runtime interpreted code." Not
sure what that means for Flex developers. Is that good/bad/indifferent?

[flexcoders] custom itemrender flicker

2009-10-05 Thread Baz
If I have a custom item render based on an ArrayCollection with 10 times,
and just for fun, I loop through those 10 items and setItemAt the exact same
values that are already there - on screen the list of items reloads in a
sense, re-building itself to the exact same values. I would like that in
such a case, the on-screen controls know that they are the same as before
and not to rebuild themselves. Is this possible? Can I intercept some event
to double check whether they are the same or different?

The goal of course, is to have this behaviour even if one some items
changed. For example if I change only the 10th item, I would expect only the
10th item to refresh, no the whole collection.

Thanks for any ideas!

P.S. I am not useing refresh() on the ArrayCollection is it set to
auto-update. Also, all my setItemAt calls are done in commitProperties()

You also want to do your editing in the index.template.html file in the
html-template directory otherwise you will wipe out your edits every time you
build a release.

I need the ad to be targeted but all I want the user to see is the flex
application and the ad...to get targeted ads I would need to put some hidden
(from the viewpoint of the user) text on the page, which most likely violates
Adsense TOS.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Adobe promises *full flash* on mobile devices (all except iPhone)

2009-10-05 Thread Cole Joplin

[flexcoders] Detecting loader.close()

2009-10-05 Thread Aaron Hardy
Hey all,

I have a Loader instance, I call the load() method, and then sometime
thereafter but before the loading is complete I call the close() method. Is
there any sort of event I can watch that will tell me the loader has been
closed? As a very simple test, I tried the following but it never gets to
the stop() method for any of the events. In my real app I have a reference
to the loader/loaderInfo in a different part of the app and need to know
when the loader is closed.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Resizing transparent png

2009-10-05 Thread Greg Hess
Thanks for your help.

Using smoothing helped a bit, but I was still seeing pixelization. My image
was 100x100 and I was setting scaleX=.6 and scaleY=.6(using Zoom effect to
1), changing my scaleX/Y to .5 produced an image that was perfect. I guess I
need to respect the aspect ratio and use scale values that would not require
rounding???

Do you know if we need to set scale values according to the aspect ratio(any
rule of thumb)?

Cheers,

Greg

[flexcoders] Re: Unable to use a source path with a number in it?

2009-10-05 Thread biosmonkey
Hi,
Flex won't let you put quotes in the edited path name. It will give an
"invalid path" and won't accept it.

Can anyone confirm this happens on the normal Flexbuilder installation (ie not
as an Eclipse plugin)?

I would check the settings in your google adsense account.
