[Flexradio] transmitter power loss mystery solved...

2009-06-04 Thread Jim Madden
As mentioned in a previous post my transmitter wasn't.

I found by accident that if I power off the radio and power it back on while
powersdr is turned off, and then turn powersdr back on things work properly.

That is to say, if the radio and powersdr are turned off, and then the radio
turned on, and then powersdr launched, things work properly.

I think I was playing a little fast and loose as to when I turned off the
radio in relationship to the state of powersdr.

I'm mentioning this in the forum in case someone new to the flex such as
myself runs into this.

Cheers

Jim

2009-06-04 Thread Tim Ellison
My web based e-mail client is the MS Exchange OWA client running on IE. I
normally do not use it, but when I do I don't have any significant problems
with it.

Do you have any scanning software that interrogates HTML data streams (virus
scanners, firewalls, spyware checkers, etc..) That could be doing it.

So if you forget, and actually use web based mail, do you get drops from your
receiver?

But indeed not going to GMAIL would solve the "problem" too.

2009-06-04 Thread Tim Ellison
I don't know about Gmail, but MS Outlook, when it receives mail does something
that results in really long duration DPCs on my XP x86 system. My issues is
probably disk I/O or network based. Your issue is probably network based. You
can try upgrading the NIC drivers.

The fix? I don't run e-mail when I use the radio.

I too, have lost the CPU window at the bottom left of the PowerSDR
Pretty Betty Blue2 screen. I have not had the computer attached to
the internet, so Microsoft updates is not the answer. the last
update was when I downloaded .net 3.5 before loading Pretty Betty
and 1.19. Can anyone else with a FlexRadio 5000A and Pretty Betty
skin see the CPU percent on their screen? Dale KC2PZ

[Flexradio] Seeking system level documentation on Power SDR and 5000A

2009-06-04 Thread Robert Jefferis

Greetings to the Flex list:

I am 3 weeks into my SDR experience with a 5000A. All is well so far
and I am experiencing renewed interest in Amateur Radio. However, I
would like to know a lot more about the internals of this beast (the
collective beast consisting of hardware and software). My first
research interest (or self imposed homework assignment) is in the TX
ALC area. I went through the user manual, the 5000A block diagram and
the service manual. I cannot put a theory of operation picture
together from these documents. I talked to the good folks at FLEX
today asking for system level functional theory of operation
documentation to get me started. Sadly, the answer was that they do
not have anything to offer. Nothing at all on the "heart" of the
radio, i.e., the software.

Is anyone aware of any end-to-end functional block diagrams that would
give me a clue to how signals are manipulated, the order of
manipulation, what information the software modules have access to to
perform their functions? For example, does the TX ALC have information
from the SWR bridge or something else to know, on an instantaneous
basis, what condition the PA or the driver is in? Or, is the the ALC
implemented on some other basis? All information will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Bob, KF6BC

Re: [Flexradio] Amp Keying and chopped key elements

2009-06-04 Thread Dale Boresz

Hello Carl,

I'm not familiar with the Acom 1000 amp, but it has been my experience
that the FLEX-5000 works exceptionally well on CW. I'm running mine with
an Ameritron AL-811H amplifier and the Ameritron QSK-5 QSK unit, which
is being keyed from the Amp Rly TX1 port as well, but with no delay. I
typically leave the break in delay set to 60 mS, and it works
flawlessly, without any truncation of any keying elements, including the
first one. I typically use an Idiom Press model K-3 keyer with the
radio, although the built-in keyer works just as well in this regard.

There may in fact be a bug with the timing when using long delays on the
TX# port(s), and if you enter it into the Bug Tracker, I'm sure it will
be investigated. But IMHO, the superb receiver performance of the
FLEX-5000 and the textbook perfect CW keying envelope (this has to be
the most 'polite' cw transmitter on the planet) makes this radio the
ideal cw rig.

the delay for TX1 to about 100 msec. I am also running break in CW
with the break in delay set at 75 msec. When I listen to my signal on
another receiver, the dah elements are coming out as dits and the dit
elements are not there at all. I am keying the radio with an external
keyer at only 20 wpm. The only solution I see at the moment is to key
PTT and send manual CW.

My keyer is a winkey keyer and I know I can use the PTT line and set a
PTT lead time to fix this with the keyer, but does anyone know of
another solution. It seems CW keying is a very weak point on the F5K.

Re: [Flexradio] vhf/uhf digital modes and repeater operation

2009-06-04 Thread Woodrick, Ed
Another thing to think about is that AOR, with their Digital HF also uses the
AMBE chip. I believe that it is knocked down to a lower transfer rate, but it
is the same chip. So it could be possible to kill two birds with one stone with
an AMBE implementation.

I believe that we should follow the route that Ed is suggesting, even as
it sticks in my craw.

We can buy a dongle for less than $125 depending on who you get it from
and with how much support, etc. that will do the AMBE encoding and
decoding. We can have open source D-Star but talk to this dongle and
much more. I think we hold our nose and realize we are going to be
interoperable with P25 services of first responders and paying much less
than would otherwise be required to get D-Star. I am an idealist, or
otherwise I would not have given away five years of effort to Flex and
this community for NOT ONE SINGLE RED CENT outside of those things my
employer wants me to do. Yet for the greater good, I believe in this
case, we should compromise. When and if a new standard becomes
available, and we can get it done open source GPL, we drop it in.

[Flexradio] Confessions from a Flexer

2009-06-04 Thread Frank
Hi All,

Having read about all the challenges some have had with firewire I was curious
to see how much I would get challenged myself as I progressed from my SDR-1000's
to the Flex series.

So here's the experience I have had so far:

As my stationary computer I am running a 2003 vintage MSI mobo with an AMD
2800+, 1.5Gb ram - was initially 512Mb but got BSOD when I tried to run DM-780
simultaneously with PSDR under Win2000. It has an ATI dual HDMI AGP video card
driving two LG LCD monitors and is set up for the SDR task with priority on
background services. It also has an SB Audigy2 for digimode service on my
"analogue" rigs. The system is connected to the internet and runs a few other
applications such as HRD, Skype, UltraVNC and other network services, but no
email client. ALL has been good, running an SDR-1000 through the M-audio
Delta-44 yields 25-30% CPU usage and not a glitch in the audio streams - one
happy SDR camper in other words.

It also got a VIA based firewire PCI card and when hooking up my FA-66 all is
still good, though CPU usage rises a little, to about 30-35% - still no glitches
and digimodes are not taxing the system too badly, not even with the FEC engines
in some modes, so weak signal modes are available at will - total CPU usage
peaking up to 45%.

There is still 55% to the ceiling.

How about running another instance of PSDR with one more SDR-1000? I have the
USB/Parallel adapter (acquired for portable use on my laptop) and connected my
1W SDR-1000 VHF backend through that. Thus two PSDR instances and two SDR-1000s
and it is peaking at under 70% CPU usage and audio is still flowing smoothly
from both - one through the Delta-44, the other through the FA-66.

Oh yes, by the way, frame rate update on the panadaper is 25, been running that
from very early on, cannot get used to less, too much flickering, would run 50
FPS if I had more CPU power at hand (I do on my dual core laptop with my
Flex-3000 - more about this later).

So far firewire trouble on this PC has been non existing through the VIA based
PCI firewire card.

So how about the newly arrived Flex-3000 then, any trouble? All went well with
installation of drivers and I deleted the database on the SVN PSDR 1.19.0 in the
test branch and turned the rig on before starting PSDR and all went as expected
and the Flex-3000 came on-line and has done so ever since.

So this "old" PC happily drives two PSDR instances and two "rigs": SDR-1000 and
now the Flex-3000 with about 30% CPU to spare, just enough to run HRD and DM-780
or UltraVNC.

It is Es season right now, so I use UltraVNC and a GN-NetCom 9350 wireless
headset.

My Flex-3000 sitting on 6M and myself sitting outside on the veranda with my
laptop "shooting fish in a barrel" with PanAdapter as "aiming device" and the
CPU meter shows 75-80% CPU usage (my SDR-1000 hangs out on 20M simultaneously) -
still audio flows without a glitch.

The Flex-3000 is plenty sensitive on 6M by the way, -132dBm, averaged 2.7KHz SSB
bandwith on dummyload, in my urban location -123dBm (when it is quiet) with a 3
element yagi.

Am I saying we should all run "old" PCs here?

Far from it, all I am saying is that I personally have had a smooth ride in this
old bucket, so smooth that I am a little reluctant to upgrade. But the form
factor of this old machine is probably going to be the deciding point, I want
something physically smaller - sooner or later

I already have a couple of smaller PC's; a company 12" FS laptop with centrino
chipset and a core-mono (disabled second core, my boss went cheap) and built in
VIA firewire. This one drives the Flex-3000 when I am on the road (mobile) in
the company vehicles. CPU usage is just over 40% in this crippled core-mono at
1.6GHz, but still, all runs smoothly. I have disabled USB and card reader usage
of IRQ 18 that is shared with the firewire port, when running the Flex-3000.

My own laptop (a tablet PC) HP TC-4400 2.0 GHz core-duo with 1Gb ram initially
had trouble getting communication to flow smoothly with the NEC based cardbus
firewire, sometimes I had to start PSDR 3 or 4 times for it to bring the
Flex-3000 on-line. It had worked flawlessly with the FA-66 so I got stubborn and
downloaded fresh drivers, disabled all IRQ shares - all to no avail. It wasn't a
serious problem as such, everything worked perfectly as soon as connection was
established, it was just annoying.

Tried a TI chipset 400/800 cardbus unit but that didn't work at all, so I sent
it back.

What to do now? Cardbus 400mbps firewire adapters with TI chipsets are scarce on
the ground to say the least, an xpress card adapter and then xpress card maybe?
Nah, I don't like the sound of adapting an adapter to adapt.

I finally stumbled across a seemingly Swiss made (Taiwan is apparently a Canton
in HB9 land) cardbus TI equipped adapter on German Ebay: Exsys EX-6600E PCMCIA
FireWire Controller, a two port 400mbps unit. Got it a couple of days ago and it
worked str

Re: [Flexradio] No TX with DXLab WW PSK31

2009-06-04 Thread Jack Haverty
I may have lucked out with this bug. I set up my F3K and it seems to be
working fine with PSDR 1.18.0, receive and trasmit. I'm using
DXLabs/Winwarbler. Not knowing any better, I configured PTT to use "RTS
and CTS" on both sides, and that did the trick.

Now figuring out the operating practices on PSK, and how to best use
filters, AGC, etc. -- that's going to take some time.

Re: [Flexradio] Amp Keying and chopped key elements

2009-06-04 Thread Robert McGwier
Hi Carl:

There are settings that need to be changed and also there is recent work. I
suggest you and all other CW ops go ahead and download the trunk using
tortoise svn. you do not need the entire trunk, just the bin/Release
directory.

Several updates are in there but they include:

1) Major bug in the cw keying timer is fixed.
2) ALC is completely refactored
3) order of ALC, Compandor, Compressor are changed to one that makes for
much better performance.

This will be included in the release this week or next but you can go ahead
and get this down now.

Re: [Flexradio] No TX with DXLab WW PSK31

2009-06-04 Thread Tim Ellison
Yes. Version 1.18.0 has a bug where the CAT TX commands does not work
correctly. It is fixed in the SVN Trunk (where all bug fixes live) and will be
included in the next released version of PowerSDR.

[Flexradio] Amp Keying and chopped key elements

2009-06-04 Thread N4PY2
I am using an Acom 1000 with my F5K. I am keying the amp with Am Key TX1.
In order to not get an arc fault on the amp, I have to set the the delay for
TX1 to about 100 msec. I am also running break in CW with the break in
delay set at 75 msec. When I listen to my signal on another receiver, the
dah elements are coming out as dits and the dit elements are not there at
all. I am keying the radio with an external keyer at only 20 wpm. The only
solution I see at the moment is to key PTT and send manual CW.

My keyer is a winkey keyer and I know I can use the PTT line and set a PTT
lead time to fix this with the keyer, but does anyone know of another
solution. It seems CW keying is a very weak point on the F5K.

Re: [Flexradio] Transverters

2009-06-04 Thread Al Ward
Hello
Well maybe there is a hardware limitation in that RX2 has some limitations
in that it can only connect direct to ANT1 it appears, other modes are
RX1tap or RX2 inputstill some possibilities.
It would be nice to be able to have the 5000 with external receiver running
on two external xvtr bands like 222 and 432 and just use the A<>B button to
switch back and forth. Like I do between 6M and 222 MHz.
Still dreaming here.

Hello Bill and others
Since I have borrowed N5AC's Flex-3000 and put it on 6M, I decided to use my
Flex-5000 on 2 VHF bands. Normally RX1 is on 6M and RX2 is on 222 or any
other transverter band I choose. Now I decided to leave RX2 alone with 222
and use RX1 on 432 MHz and use the high power antenna port out the back to
drive my 432 xvtr which like Bill'e request needs the higher power. Only
problem, I can't run 10M high power out RF1, RF2, etc, and have the
frequency readout say 432.1 MHz instead of 28.1 MHz. I can drive my xvtrs
just fine with high power on 10M, I just can not change the frequency in the
XVTR table because it expects all xvtrs to use the low power combined or
split xvtr port.
So could the xvtr table also give us control of using the normal antenna
ports to drive xvtrs and still have our frequency indicated in the display?
I know it is not the 1 watt port Bill was asking for but the drive level
could also be set with a revised xvtr table that I am talking about.
Basically can the xvtr selection table also allow us to get high controlled
power out of RF1, RF2, RF3? No hardware change just software.

Re K5HY's message, I reiterate my comment made at the session at Dayton. The
transverters should have one high power output (25 -50W) and ALSO a low
power output (1 - 5) to drive tower-mounted microwave transverters. I have
been told that the low power output will be 1 milliwatt, which in no way is
enough to drive tower-mounted transverters

Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Digest, Vol 50, Issue 4

2009-06-04 Thread Tim Ellison
The problem with using USB/LSB for digital modes is the signal processing
options that can be enabled causing poor transmission quality, such as the EQ
and the Compander.

If you are getting the wrong frequency reading in MixW with digital modes, it
is because you probably do not have the CAT setting "DigL/DigU Returns LSB/USB"
enabled and the default MixW mode is not set to None. You also need to set the
DigiU/DigiL Click tune offsets to the center frequency of your digital mode RX
filters.

Concerning the Vac setup on the F5K to Mixw its most often a problem of using
wrong DIGL, DIGU offset settings.
Therefore I am using mostly only USB amd made my own TX profiles for different
use like SSB or Digimodes Because when using the wrong default DIGL DIGU Offset
the Mixw Waterfall appears like that, and even the frequency readout on Mixw
shows wrong.
I have here perfect setting with PwrSdr and at least 4 Digi mode programms

I have the latest Windows 7, 32Bit Version ins use here, and it works great.
Much better then with Vista. Its comparable to W XP, and let you install
older
drivers needed to run different Cat and Vac programms.
Windows 7 has a fanastic way to check and install older programms or
drivers.
I even use the USB/LPT converter, no problem
I made a complete test to see how it compares to W XP.
Results: Fantastic

To help sort out the 3000 vs. 5000 messages, early on I just created a
mailbox filter and have separated messages for the two radio models. Works
great for me. Box1 = 3000, box2 = 5000, and a default for all others.
Most people (should and do) type in either 3000 or 5000 in the subject line.
You can key on that for the mailbox filter.

[Flexradio] I did it!

2009-06-04 Thread Harold Rosee

I want to thank everyone for their comments on my questions from the other day.
After the answers I received and speaking with Eric at Flexradio we
determinded that the FLEX 3000 would fit the bill for my casual operations. I
will be replacing my ICOM 756 Pro II with the flex.

What a great company to work with! I don't know how I am going to wait the 2
or 3 weeks to get it. I probably won't sleep much. I will take the time to
read the manual and play with the demo software I picked up at Dayton.

I look forward to meeting some of you next week at Hamcom in Dallas.

Thanks again for all the advice and comments.

While we can't really do something like this on the server side, this is
pretty much what happens with the gmail client due to the conversation

Flex Guys
I have read the specs on the Flex 5000 U/V upgrade. This was one of the
major reasons I purchased my 5000 which I received 12/2007 with the intent
of using it with external microwave transverters. This radio has been great
fun and a never ending adventure to own. In the past When asked, Gerald
mentioned that there would be a low power transverter drive output. The
website mentions that it can be used with external transverters but
"requires power attenuation". Will there at least be an internal low power
tap point or internal jumper to reduce power for us who are only interested
in using the 5000 with external transverters without having to heat up an
external attenuator? I realize the power will be adjustable but it's a risky
thing to do, especially when the power level adjuasment is software
controlled, not to mention the danger of possible latency in that circuit
causing a power spike when keyed.

There is a workaround I've used with MixW and PowerSDR v1.18.0. Create a

If you are using PowerSDR v1.18.0, there is a bug that prevents CAT TX

The SVN TRUNK version works with Windows x64 operating systems, but you have to
load .NET 1.1 + the service packs. Win7 is not currently supported as they
have a Firewire issue that requires loading the older legacy 1394 driver.

Can you arrange "Todays Topics" to show the topic once and hyper link to the

2009-06-04 Thread Woodrick, Ed
Is there a version that has the CAT command fixed AND supports x64? It seems
that the ones that I've tried don't like the x64.

If you are using PowerSDR v1.18.0, there is a bug that prevents CAT TX command
form working correctly. It is fixed in the SVN trunk version and will be in
the next released version of PowerSDR.

My MixW receives and puts out if I manually key the 5000, but what once worked,
the PTT no longer does, why?

I didn't think it was on my Win7 x64.

Interesting. I would recommend contacting the VAC folks and ask them about
Win7 compatibility. We all would like to know if it is going to work correctly
or not.

Subject: [Flexradio] General question about VAC

Hi,

Testerday I made few tests on a windows 7 computer with VAC and was surprised
to see that the vac cable 1 (the first one) is already 'hooked'
[44,1k, 8, ...] without any others processes than the OS started.
I came back on my VISTA partition and this pb doesn't show up.

Anybody experiencing the same issue ? Any idea ?
Cable 1 is key , not for my flex but for my Perseus ...
