Re: [Flexradio] Anyone using CWGet with Flexradio 5000A

2009-12-07 Thread K9DUR
Brian,

I use CWGet with my FLEX-5000A. I use my PC speakers with my F5K by running
a stereo cable between the "PWR SPKR OUT" jack on the back of the radio to
the "Line In" jack of the on-board soundcard of the PC. This has a couple
of advantages, one of which being I can use the Griffin PowerMate as a
volume control.

Then, I simply set CWGet to use the PC soundcard for its input.

You've got it right.

The gentleman stated that it didn't work like that until he switched to Windows

[Flexradio] SDR-1000 with lots of built-in extras for sale

2009-12-07 Thread Joe - AB1DO
Since owning the FLEX-5000 I no longer use my SDR-1000. It therefore deserves a
better home.

For Sale: SDR-1000 with lots of additional extras:
  a.. SDR-1000 with 100W PA. The package includes the SDR-1000; M-Audio
Delta-44 sound card; Elecraft XG1 Signal Generator (required for calibration);
parallel cable that will work with the SDR-1000 (not a printer cable); 15-pin
to 1/8" audio adapter cable (see below) to facilitate using the SDR-1000 with a
different sound card; 15-pin HD to 1/4" female adapter cable to connect a foot
pedal to the rear panel External Control(X2) connector.
b.. Completely up-to-date with all ECOs, including temperature stabilization
of main oscillator with PTC device (factory installed).
c.. Oscillator stabilization further improved with separate 8V regulator,
providing an 8V regulated voltage to the PTC device. Without this additional
regulation, the radio drifts in frequency approximately 20-50Hz for
approximately 10 seconds after returning the radio to receive from transmit.
This occurs even at very low power levels, but is more pronounced as transmit
power is increased.
d.. Built-in proportional fan controller virtually eliminates fan noise. The
temperature of the PA finals is monitored continuously and the fan speed
adjusted as required. In extreme conditions (this has never happened!), the
controller shuts off all power to the PA and illuminates a front-panel LED to
indicate a High Temperature event.
e.. Second front panel LED indicating when the SDR-1000 is in transmit mode.
f.. Built-in mini Delta-44 break-out board, giving full control of potential
ground loops with jumpers, while at the same time replacing 4 audio cables and
the original desktop break-out box with only one cable directly from the
SDR-1000 to the Delta-44 sound card. This significantly cleans up the cable
clutter that otherwise exists with the SDR-1000.
g.. Includes two (L+R) RCA jacks for a much more solid speaker connection.
h.. Includes a rear panel RCA jack for Mic/Line-in audio connection. Rather
than directly wiring the front panel mic connector to the built-in mini
break-out board, the original isolated "To Mic" connector was maintained as a
Mic Out jack. This enables the user to insert a MIC preamp, etc. If no preamp
is required, a very short 1/8" to RCA adapter cable links the front panel Mic
connector directly to the Delta 44.
The radio is in great condition. It has recently been put on the air and
everything worked flawlessly. Photos of the front panel, rear panel, interior
and contents of the package can be seen at

Asking price for the whole package is $975.=, shipped to CONUS.

Please contact me off-list with any questions, etc.

Yep, you want to use VAC (registered version) and there is a file you have
to add to the MMSSTV directory called "sc_select.mmw" that lets you select
the VAC sound card devices and you need to run the Virtual serial port
program my recommendation is VSP Manager by K5FR for the PTT serial port.
If you already have other software control programs running then the only
thing you should need is the "sc_select.mmw" file.

[Flexradio] DDUtil release 1.7.9

2009-12-07 Thread Steve Nance
I'm pleased to announce that DDUtil now supports remote operation of the SPE
Expert 1K-FA solid state linear amplifier. This addition has been a long
time coming due to the fact I don't have one of these amps to test with. My
hardiest thanks go to Stu Phillips (K6TU) for his help with the alpha code
testing and the several other beta testers that helped with their testing
support.

Please read the documentation thoroughly before connecting the amplifier.
This is a rather straight forward implementation and most should have no
problems setting it up. Again, read the docs.

Please post questions and/or comments to the DDUtil Yahoo group or to me

DDUtil 1.7.9 is available for download from:

Re: [Flexradio] WIn 7 strange phenomena with SDR1000

2009-12-07 Thread Dudley Hurry

Ed,

If you listen on the opposite sideband and move the passband to the
opposite SB, you should hear the signals, this is normal, but if you
flip to the opposite SB without moving the passband, you should not..
I verified that it works the same on Win7 as it does on XP.. On the
SDR-1000 if you are missing one side of the I/Q signal coming from the
radio, then you will hear the opposite SB just fine, due to no nulling
on the I/Q signal, so either have your friend run the RX Image
calibration and/or check his connections to the sound card. This is one
of the advantage of having a Flex 5000 or Flex 3000.

Are there significant mods that will be done when 5000A units are sent
back for installation of the high-power V/U module?

[Flexradio] Flex in contesting

2009-12-07 Thread Rudy Bakalov
Hello all,
I am considering switching from traditional radios to a pair of F5s for SO2R
contesting. I have spent fair amount of time browsing the archives and reading
the manual, but some of my questions still remain unanswered. I'd greatly
appreciate some thoughts from fellow contesters.
I have the following 3 questions:
1. How do you connect 2 radios to N1MM? What kind of hardware do you need?
Seems to me that running one radio + N1MM is a no brainer as I can create
virtual sound and comm ports that N1MM can use. But what about a second radio?
Can I run a second instance of PowerSDR on the same computer?
2. It seems that TX OUT can be selected on a per overall system basis, but not
on a per receiver- e.g. ANT1 for TX/RX1 and ANT2 for TX/RX2. Am I missing
something?  The idea is to have a different antenna for transmitting on the
frequency of each receiver so that I can have 2 amplifiers, 2 sets of antennas,
etc.
3. From user interface perspective, how do you handle using the contest logger
+ PowerSDR at the same time? After all, mouse and keyboard are always related
to the foremost application; changing the focus moves the mouse and keyboard to
the other application. So I can either use the logger or PowerSDR, but not
both. How do I type in the logger while playing with the filter for example?
Your thoughts and experience will be greatly appreciated.  I am very interested
in SDRs, but not 100% sure how to integrate and use into a SO2R setup.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex in contesting

2009-12-07 Thread K9DUR
Rudy,

I use N1MM with my FLEX-5000a in contests. I have RX2 installed, but have
never tried SO2R. So, I cannot answer many of your questions, but I will
tackle what I can.

If you have the RX2 & have the antennas set per band, then if you hear
something on RX2 that you want to work, quickly hit the "A<>B" button & the
F5K will automatically set the antennas, TX Relay Out, etc. for the new
transmit band. Hit "A<>B" again to go back to your run frequency.

Since N1MM Logger grabs the focus any time the frequency changes, I don't
worry about it. I uses the up & down arrows to scroll the frequency (N1MM
shortcut keys). When I am S&P'ing (which is 99.99% of the time) I click on
signals on the panadapter, PowerSDR tunes the radio (VFO A or VFO B) to the
new freq & N1MM immediately grabs the focus back so you are ready to enter
data for the new contact.

Others will have to answer the question about running 2 instances of
PowerSDR on the same computer, but I really think you can make SO2R work
with only one F5K (sorry. Greg).

Then, connecting to N1MM is a no brainer, one serial port connection using a
virtual serial port pair.

As for using a virtual sound card with N1MM, good luck. I have the new .dll
from K1TTT which allows me to select the soundcard for N1MM to use to
transmit .wav files, but I have not yet been successful in doing so. The
audio comes across choppy. I probably have something set wrong, but I'll be
darned if I can find the right setup! Because of this, I wrote a voice
keyer program (available free from my website) which allows me to use it in
contests along with N1MM. The only problem is that it will not send a
serial number like N1MM does, so I have to do that manually if the contest
requires one.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex in contesting

2009-12-07 Thread Tim Ellison
I would not consider a pair of FLEX-5000s for several reasons.

If you add the RX2 (independent 2nd receiver) to one FLEX-5000, you have SO2R
in a single box. Each independent receiver can have the TX frequency quickly
assigned to it with a single mouse click on the console.

All you have to do is put the RX2 on ANT-1 and RX1 on either ANT-2 or ANT-3.
These are transceivers ports, so you can connect an amp to each. Antenna
connecter assignments can be selected on a per BAND basis and they can all be
independent of each other (TX, RX1 and RX2). See the S02R mode description in
this KB article http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50385.aspx

Now the contest logging issue is probably the biggest one you face and it is
because contest loggers are not designed to handle this type of scenario.
Depending on the software, you might be able to get it to recognize VFO A (RX1)
and VFO B (RX2) but getting it to understand the transmitting frequency might
be a problem and that will result in a logging issue. I have not tried this
out with Win-Test and I don't use N1MM, so someone else how has used N1MM will
have to comment.

BWT, you can not connect two FLEX-5000s, two FLEX-3000s or one of each to the
same computer. There is no way to enumerate them in the software, so your best
bet is to use 1 FLEX-5000 with an RX2. You will have to wait until the Deep
Impact software comes out to connect multiple Firewire based SDRs to the same
computer.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex in contesting

2009-12-07 Thread FireBrick

you don't need two radio with N1MM
In factit may be darn near imposible.
N1MM will only accept (I think it's 8) com ports.
They do not have any provision for com ports higher than that.

As you must use 'virtual com ports', that's already 4 pairs.
So that may be a deal breaker.

But as using the RX2 as the second radio, it bypasses the com port issue.
I contest with a F5K
but I'm old and slow so one radio is almost too much.
but I have set it up just to try it.

I got it working...to a degree, but never really tried to do it seriously.

OK, very quickly it became clear than I don't need a pair of F5Ks, but just one
with the second receiver installed.  This is great!  No need to spend twice as
much
With respect to the TX antenna selection, selection per band will not work for
me as I am designing my station in such a way that both radios can access all
antennas at any time, as long as as the antenna is not currently in use by the
other radio.  So coax 1 can have any band from 160 to 10 m and so does coax 2.
I simply want RX1 to TX on ANT1 on all bands and RX2 to TX on ANT2 on all
bands. I also want RX1 to trigger amplifier 1 and RX2 to trigger amplifier 2.
It's all about the software; can this be done by changing the PowerSDR code?
Could this work?

How would you "sound engineering practice" your way out of this

I have put in a lot of mental hours and more than a few emails on this topic
over the past 2 years, for 2 reasons. I think the Flex radios could be the
premier contest radio on the market with just a bit of work and I also think
our general ham community would benefit from the changes (plus it would
increase sales which means Flex will remain healthy and produce that 128
module rig I have been hoping for!

In reality, I think 2x3000s are the premier config. We would need to
fandangle PowerSDR, build on the 5000 implementation logic so it could run
dual panadapters from two 3000s instead of 1 dual-rx 5000.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex in contesting

2009-12-07 Thread K9DUR
Bill,

You are correct, N1MM only allows you to use COM1 through COM8. However,
that is not really a deal-breaker. The ports in a pair do not have to be
consecutive. I use 2 virtual port pairs to connect N1MM to PowerSDR. In
N1mm they are COM7 & Com8, but they are paired with COM17 & COM18
respectively. PowerSDR does not have the serial port number limitation that
N1MM has.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex in contesting

2009-12-07 Thread K9DUR
Tim,

You wrote; " I simply want RX1 to TX on ANT2 or ANT3 on all bands and RX2
to TX on ANT1 on all bandsThis you can do."

No, he can't. He wants RX1 to "TX" on ANT2 or ANT3 on all bands, and for
RX2 to "TX" on ANT1 on all bands. He wants the TX to follow the antenna
being used by whichever receiver he is using. However, since BOTH receivers
are active all of the time, I do not see any way to make PowerSDR (or any
software) read his mind & know which receiver he is listening to at the
moment.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex in contesting

2009-12-07 Thread K9DUR
Rudy,

As I pointed out in a reply to Tim's comment (which I sent before reading
your last post), BOTH receivers are active all of the time. There is simply
NO WAY for any software to know which receiver you are listening to at any
given time and be able to switch the TX antenna accordingly.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex in contesting

2009-12-07 Thread Jim Fuller N7VR
I have been looking at this from a bit different point of view.
As Neal mentioned Flex 3000's, I will share the thinking.
I am considering two Flex 3000s each run by a computer on a network.
I can use a KVM switch to handle the keyboard, mouse and maybe mic (using
Video Ports) switching.
Each computer/Flex 3000 system would run it's own version of N1MM and use
the database interlinking to share the contacts, in the same as a multi
transmitter station setup.

Because each Radio would have it's own screen, amp, antenna, I could work
separate bands for multiplier gathering.
However, I also think the Flex 5000 with and RX2 would work easier. Just
have not looked everything over far enough.

The thing that would allow this to work is that N1MM can synchronize data
between multiple computers.
