That's great news Clay. Finally, an S-meter that's calibrated and

Ed,

Never import an entire database from one version of PowerSDR to another.
You will be transferring calibration data & other critical data that may
vary from version to version.

Look at my SDRDataTransfer utility. It was written specifically to allow
you to transfer any or all of your custom settings safely between versions.
It is free & is available from my website (URL below).

Yes you can use the above software to clone your drive to a SSD drive,
then change the boot order or remove the old HDD

I retained my hdd as drive D but also 'moved' the c:\users folder to
drive D as a junction point/hard symLink, so the operating system
(win7-64 in my case) doesn't know any difference, therefore all the temp
files, documents, music, pictures and other clutter which resides there
isn't using up valuable IO's on the SSD

This technique of moving Users is simple but has to be followed in a
logical manner and may be different depending on your drive letters,
disk numbers;

Reboot with Win7 / Vista DVD and enter "Repair your computer" mode
Select command prompt
Identify drives. For me C:\ was the
SSD with Windows 7 and D:\ was my HDD
Then move the users directory with:
C:\> move c:\Users c:\Users.bak
Use 'diskpart' to assign the mount
point
C:\> diskpart
  list disk
  select disk 2 (my HDD)
  select partition 1(main partition)
 assign mount=c:\users
 exit
From the command prompt, copy the
user files back:
C:\> robocopy /mir /xj c:\Users.bak c:\Users

Reboot and that should be it, but keep your original HDD handy just in
case..

There are other methods to move c:\users folder,

Re: [Flexradio] Data base

2011-03-25 Thread Tim Ellison
There are only three databases for PowerSDR
1. The radio / PowerSDR specific DB - located in the version specific folder
in %APPDATA%\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v2.x.y (x=minor version & y=revision).
It has the name database_A_-.XML (A = radio model / - = serial
number). This is where 99.% of the info for running a particular radio on
a particular version of PowerSDR resides

2.) The Radio Chooser DB - located in %APPDATA%\FlexRadio Systems. It has the
name master.xml. It is recommended that you do not manually edit this file.

3.) FLEX-3000 ATU database - located in the version specific folder in
%APPDATA%\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v2.x.y (x=minor version & y=revision). It
has the name ATUdatabase.XML It is recommended that you do not manually edit
this file.

The "best practice" is it allow PowerSDR to create a new default DB for your
particular radio and manually update it with your user specific setting or you
can use Ray's K9DUR Data Transfer utility to transfer data from one DB version
to another.

Absolutely agree, keep windows, system functions and your applications
on the SSD and move your data files to the hard drive. To do this, you
can right-click on your documents folder, select Properties and then
click on the Locations tab. There you can change the location of your
documents directory. Just rename the drive letter (from C: to D: for
instance) Press Enter three times and you have moved it! If you see a
folder for 'My Music'
or 'My Pictures'. etc. right click it and see if it has a location tab
in its properties list. If so, change it!

I use Acronis True Image's disk clone to move my boot disk and have had
95 percent success with it. Keep the old disk handy though (don't erase
it after the cloining process) for a while.

Good point. My main drive is a 1TB, and is around 98% empty. A smaller

Interesting, thanks.

They're a lot faster, but remember that FLASH memory has a lifespan of
100,000 writes per cell. SSDs have dynamic reallocation algorithms to
move data around so that you don't get "hot" cells and failures, but
over the course of several years on a busy workstation the disk will
wear out faster than a typical SATA drive.

I doubt my usage would approach that being a problem!

Core2's aren't THAT recent - I recently moved everything off a 1.5GHz
Core2 Duo to a AMD 635 - 4 cores, 2.9GHz, 8Gig RAM and now things work
a lot more smoothly with my Flex 1500.

By recent, I meant about three years ago. I realize that was when
dinosaurs roamed, in computer terms.

The new "hybrid" drives look interesting as a middle ground position:

There is no great advantage but, having said that, my radio computer uses
an
SSD. The main advantages are speed in booting, fast read access, less
noise,
and much lower power consumption which means less heat in the computer
enclosure which allows me to run slower/quieter fans.

Since I only need about 6GB of storage for the radio computer I went

WRT the limited number of write cycles, if you have a disk that is much
larger than your usage (5x in my case) I don't really have to worry too
much
about wearing it out. If your computer is on all the time as mine is (I
run

WSPR when not making QSOs) then a spinning disk is only going to have a
useful lifetime of 2 years anyway. Yes, I know they last longer but at
that

point I swap them out to avoid failure. Cheap insurance. In that case I
would expect SSD to have a longer life than spinning disks.

Re: [Flexradio] Solid State Drives?

2011-03-25 Thread William H. Fite
My approach is similar to Brian's. I have the OS and the page files (is
that still the right term under Win7?) on a small SSD and all the "stuff" on
a couple of conventional HDDs. There is nothing to be gained by keeping
your movies and music on SSD.

You can move it. IT departments do it all the time.

That being said...I have found it a chancy business. But then I run a bunch
of bench-built statistical applications that aren't always neatly and tidily
put together.

Neal can give you a definitive answer.

There is no change in that area that I have been able to see.

Did you change sample rate? Filter sharpness is determined by both sample
rate and DSP RX buffer size. If you double the sample rate it is the same as
cutting your DSP RX buffer in half.

There is no great advantage but, having said that, my radio computer uses an
SSD. The main advantages are speed in booting, fast read access, less noise,
and much lower power consumption which means less heat in the computer
enclosure which allows me to run slower/quieter fans.

Since I only need about 6GB of storage for the radio computer I went looking
for a deal on smaller SSDs. I was able to find a 32GB SSD for $110. Nowadays
you might expect to get 1TB for that price but I would just end up with
994GB of free space anyway.

WRT the limited number of write cycles, if you have a disk that is much
larger than your usage (5x in my case) I don't really have to worry too much
about wearing it out. If your computer is on all the time as mine is (I run
WSPR when not making QSOs) then a spinning disk is only going to have a
useful lifetime of 2 years anyway. Yes, I know they last longer but at that
point I swap them out to avoid failure. Cheap insurance. In that case I
would expect SSD to have a longer life than spinning disks.

The question here is the extent to which this issue can be blamed on the
release candidate versus some combination of characteristics in the whole
hardware chain. The number of these kinds of complaints seems to be
vanishingly small (h...that comment may bring others out of the
woodwork, we'll see). I suspect that part of the reality of SDR-world
will

always be a certain number of "it doesn't work on my machine" complaints
that can never be eradicated by any vendor. We may all just have to learn
to live with that.

That being said, there is scarcely anything more maddening than being the
guy who has troubles and can't figure out why next to no one else is
having
them. "Everyone is out of step but me, Sarge" is never a comfortable
place

to be.

Good luck with it and keep us posted.

had 0us latency as measured by DPCLat. After SP1, it now measures 6us.

Granted I test a lot of parts or this function but this one is a winner!

CPU usage is less than 20%, and DPCs rarely get much above 100us.

I don't notice a current speed limitation, but maybe there is something

They are still quite expensive, in terms of $/GB compared to the HDDs.
