Re: [Flexradio] Three Years of Fun
Hi Steve. Good stuff! I've had my 5000A for almost three years. I have operated it remotely from all over the country. Enjoyed every minute. I listened in on an interesting QSO on 75M AM last week. A station on Long Island, NY, who was operating a Yaesu or Kenwood radio, self righteously called Flex users appliance operators. He went on to say he could never operate a radio with no knobs. Gentlemen, This is not a unique experience. I have been called a CB operator, LID, etc. and my mother's reputation and my privates have been called into question! I find this reaction to be downright common and I no longer routinely discuss Flex or SDR on the air unless I know that the other person either has such equipment or knows about it. Since I have some ideas about how my SDR radios can be used in serious emergency situations as well as for pure pleasure this is a great disappointment to me. 73 Lee K9WRU - Original Message - From: Bill Marvin bmar...@comcast.net To: 'Steve Weinert' k...@mac.com; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Sent: Sunday, November 27, 2011 9:01 AM Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Three Years of Fun Hi Steve. [Flexradio] 6th Year as Flex'er
As best as I can go backwards, I believe I ordered my SDR-1000 in January of 2006 which means I will be going on 6 years of Flex fanboy fanaticism and at least 5.5 years of only owning SDR radios! It would be neat if Flex could put a chronology on their website on product releases. I think that the company is older and has done more than many people know! I got in after the Python days (I think the production version of PSDR was 1.2 and the test version was 1.3??) I was traipsing thru my email archives trying to find my sales receipt (my archives ended in June of 2006 so no luck) but it was so interesting to see so many of the same hams still Flex'in! I saw an email from A potential buyer with questions authored by W9OL in August of 2006. And, of course, Tim, Eric, Gerald and Dale were there doing what they do! Mighty sad that John Basiloto didn't get to see how successful the company he helped get on its feet was performing. -- Neal Campbell Owner Abroham Neal LLC Work:+1 540 645 5394 Mobile: +1 540 645 8171 ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
[Flexradio] Switching channels on 60m on Flex 5000 RX2
Hi All, I can't figure out how to easily switch between 60 meter channels when receiving on 60 meters using the Flex 5000 RX2. With RX1 it is easily done using the Band Stacking Memories, but they are not available with RX2. My application is using RX1 as IF for microwaves and RX2 as 60 meter liaison receiver. I don't want to have to switch RX1 from VHF+/VHFx to 60 meters and back again every time I want to change the 60 meter channel on RX2. I assume that there is a way to do this that I am missing, but I couldn't find it after spending a good deal of time looking for it online and in the various Flex documents this afternooon. The same issue of course applies to trying to step through the WWV frequencies to check prop with RX2. I am using PowerSDR 2.2.3. Re: [Flexradio] Three Years of Fun
Steve, Nice looking pic! I bought a 3000 and really liked it. Had issues with the newer Power SDR (Beta 2.0) that just kicked my butt, but that's old news. Having said that I liked the SDR concept so much I've upgraded to the 5000 over a year ago. I can't say ANYTHING negative about it. My best friend who is an engineer, also owns a 5000, told me some interesting facts about the radio. Sherwood Labs has the 5000 as one of the top tiered radios for RX. But when you read the notes about the radios, the flex beats out the rest of the crowd! It IS the best sounding radio on both RX and TX I have ever owned! By the way I use a two monitor system here also. I use two 23 inch 1080p monitors here. I had issues with the no knob configuration but quickly overcame that! I saved the QST that had the FT-5000 review. The author had a sidebar that said it would be nice to be able to click on a signal and QSY (not exact). I thought, dude get a FLEX! One of the reasons I bought the 5000 is the ability to configure your system. 3000 is nice, but it is what it is, nice entry into SDR for sure. I'm in the process of upgrading my antenna system and shack. Pics to follow in a few months. Re: [Flexradio] Voice Keyer
My 2 cents. I've had good success with lots of PC voice keyers, but when they go down in the middle of a contest you do tend to spend some time getting things back online. I have run N1MM with my F3K, but the setup did take some time. I've just ordered one of these for my Flex http://www.idiompress.com/logitalker.php as an external device. A few of my buddies have them and they just love them. BTW, I just ran my first CW test.. period. The Flex was so rock sold with the 50hz filters, that I can't imagine using anything else. Normally, I would switch to my IC 756pro3, but this time I thought I would try the 3K with The Knob. You must have the knob to ensure you always have vfo focus. The one problem I had was that I kept coasting by the station as the tuning signals were somewhat buffered. Has anyone else seen this? As someone else pointed out, you have to read the reviews, while it looks good, it seems like monkeys put it together, sometimes it works, sometimes it does not, no support if it does not work. Brett-- I just checked out the NewEgg computer you linked and it looks great. I hadn't heard of the FX series processors, and it looks great. I have a AMD Phenom II, built about 1.5 years ago, and the FX is even more advanced, next gen. FX has lots of L2 and L3 cache, should be a killer. I love the Phenom II-- I can run PSDR, with dozens of other apps, including remote access with Teamviewer and Skype (both big hogs), FLDigi, logging programs, you name it. Never misses a beat. So one day I decided to find the limit. Besides PSDR running and decoding PSK31 with FLDigi and logging, I had DDUtil coordinating the serial comm, 0-com-0, VAC, Teamviewer and skype running to make the remote work, a USB Netcam showing shack video to a buddy connected remotely, Davis Weatherlink writing out internet and APRS local weather info (runs on the machine 24x7), had email running, Panda Anti-virus in the background, was rendering an edited video with Pinnacle HD Ultimate, decrypting a DVD with DVD Shrink, and compiling/writing a DVD video with Nero 10. Couldn't cause PSDR to even stutter. Highest I ever saw the processor load though-- hit 60% a couple of times-- but that's it!! I had all the cores humping for that run though! *PSDR is not a big resource hog. *But it does need to be serviced frequently and in near-real time. If some other process or driver causes a delay on the interrupt stack, you are going to notice the delays in the audio streams or CW response. Having multiple cores helps provide resources when another process is hogging, and lots of RAM so swapping NEVER happens is essential. My normal setup, not doing stupid stuff like rendering videos, decrypting DVDs and writing disks-- CPU usage is 5-7%. Start Teamviewer and Skype and connect remotely and it jumps to 12-15%. DPCs go up with Teamviewer and Skype too, but not over 75 or so, except an occasional spike when the remote operator moves or clicks something on the screen. When you hook that new computer to the Flex, you should see what the Flex really runs like. Virgil is redesigning a new version now, and taking orders for the next run. I have the previous version, and really like it. I've used it with my FT-817 and openHPSDR. I haven't tried it with my Flex-1500 yet, mostly due to time and physical positioning in the shack.
