[Flexradio] Flexradio 1500/PowerSDR 2.7.2 question

2016-06-05 Thread David Hilton-Jones
If I forget to close SDR 2.7.2 before turning power off the Flexradio 1500, the
next time I try to open Power SDR it doesn't open and a box appears offering me
either Flexradio 1500 or Demo, but neither works. I have to restart the
computer, which is a bit of a pain. Has anybody found a quick fix?

[Flexradio] Out of band transmission

2012-09-14 Thread David Hilton-Jones

I fear I've just made a big mistake. I've been using a SDR1000 for several
years as an IF for VHF transverter use. I decided to upgrade to a Flex-1500
which is of course apparently better designed for the purpose.

But only now that I've spent the money have I realised the major problem. My
70MHz transverter uses a 50MHz LO (10Mhz source x 5) and an IF of 20-21MHz. I
set up the Flex-1500 with ease, only to find that when I try to transmit I get
an out-of-band message, because of course 20MHz is not an amateur band.

I've seen some previous posting suggesting that an answer might be forthcoming,
but haven't seen it.

Have I wasted my money?

Help please.

[Flexradio] 144MHz transverter not working with SDR v2

2012-06-24 Thread David Hilton-Jones

I use a SDR-1000 as a transverter driver (from 20MHz to 70MHz). But I also have
the Demi 144MHz transverter installed although rarely use it. I have just
noticed that when I click on the 2 metre button, nothing happens. Reverting
back to v1.8 and works fine.

Also, when I click on any of the Home Farm, band, buttons I get the Unhandeled
exception error report.

Running under Windows XP.

Any answers please?

Subject: [Flexradio] SDR-1000 bug in v 2.0.22?

I think that I have found a bug in the last official release of PowerSDR
v2.0.22 with a SDR-1000:

- Let's define a XVTR, for example LO offset 116, begin freq. 144 and
end freq. 146.
- Select the VHF band and the XVTR already defined. Enter any frequency
in the band: it works.
- Go back to HF using the HF button: if you enter any frequency either
using the keyboard, the mouse of the band's buttons you get the
exception index out matrix bounds or something close (I'm using a
localized version of windows, so the message is in the localized language).
- Also while in VHF, if I enter a HF frequency in the keyboard, it gives
the same exception instead of going directly to the corresponding HF band.

This doesn't happen in previous versions, neither in RC1 or RC2. I
don't know if the problem is SDR-1000 specific.
It happens with a fresh database. The OS is WinXP SP3.

I didn't entered in the bug tracker yet awaiting if it can be reproduced
by other SDR-1000 users.

Not sure if this is a related problem.

I'm using a SDR1k and have just installed v2.0.22. I use a transverter for

On re-starting the programme the previously entered details in the XVTR tab

I understand that with the latest release (SDR 2.0.16), for the SDR 1K, CW will
only work with the keyer connected to the computer COM port and not the keyer

can you also connect a straight key?

[Flexradio] Odd transmit delay

2010-07-08 Thread David Hilton-Jones
I've just realised some bizarre behaviour of the X2TR if the X2 delay is set to
50

I use a SDR1000 with Power SDR v1.18.6. I use 20-21MHz output to drive a 70MHz
transverter.

Since inception I've noted a delay of about 0.5 seconds from pressing the PTT
(on SSB) and getting transmit output and the Panadapter display changing. It's
annoying but I just thought it was a quirk of the software.

The X2 delay was set at 50 which is the default value and I'd never changed it
before. By chance I've found that if the value is set to 49 or 51 (or indeed
any higher or lower values) the delay on transmit disappears!

Would be interested to know if anybody has seen this quirk.

click the XVTR's button and assign button zero to the parameters you want

Then click VHF button front panel to find your created band.

make sure under general you unclick 100w PA presentconnect the txvr to

Re: [Flexradio] 144 and 432 - Low vs High Power Design

2008-07-02 Thread David Hilton-Jones
I suggest that there are two important issues to consider:

1) Power output. I have a strong preference for 50-60 watts - that allows
driving of a 13db triode to 1kw. Intermediate amplifiers are undesirable.

2) Stability - for digital modes standard crystal oscillators are not stable
enough. I would favour the approach used by DB6NT in their latest transverters
- the ability to lock to an external source (eg 10MHz) - as an aside, can the
5000A, like the SDR-1000, be fed by an external frequency source?

I have received quite a few emails [direct and via the reflector] regarding
the subject above. Thank you for your input and recommendations. Let me
iterate my earlier post for those not familiar with this tread.

The transverter design is a work in progress. And, even though our original
intent was to build a 25 watt dual band unit, we are still considering other
options with respect to power output. Gerald will have more to say on this
subject in the weeks to come. In the meantime, we are/will carefully review
all recommendations. Please forgive me for not responding to each and every
email, it's a bit hectic around here these day. :-)

[Flexradio] SDR v1.10.4 and VAC

2008-02-28 Thread David Hilton-Jones
I remain convinced that there is a VAC problem with v1.10.4

I have been running the following without problems:

SDR-1000
M-Audio Delta44
Parallel port (abandoned USB to parallel adaptor as a disaster!)
v1.10.3 and earlier
WSJT v5.9.8
VAC4.03

When I recently installed v1.10.4 and ran WSJT receive was fine but on Tx I can
generate no tones. I assumed I had done something wrong but am now convinced,
after hours of searching, that it's a problem with the new version.

If I return to earlier SDR versions all work OK.

I have re-downloaded and reinstalled v1.10.4.

I have tried importing the database from v1.10.3, as well as starting with a
database from scratch.

The problem remains.

Any help appreciated, but until then I'm back to v1.10.3!!!

The PLL multiplier is set to 20, and the signals I can hear are on the right

With respect to the instruction On the TRX board, change the jumpers on SV1
and SV2, next to the oscillator
QG1, to pins 2 and 3 respectively I have moved the jumpers to the alternative
position available. I am not clear what is meant by the pin positions.

The 10MHz signal is being applied to pin 8, and the earth of the braid to pin 7

VAC. My ownly problem is when using DigiU for WSJT operating. On receive, what
I was seeing was 6-10 very brief drop-outs every 30 second period - a downward
spike on the green signal line and a thin black stripe in the JT display. On
transmit I was getting several drop-outs, each again lasting a few tens of
milliseconds, during each transmit period.

None of the changes that otehrs suggested worked for me. What has worked is
changing the clock offset time in the VAC control panel, with slightly
different times needed for each of the two cables (one for Tx the other for
Rx). So, the transmit problem seems to have gone completely changing to 1.01.
On the otherhand, the receive side works best with 1.08. It was entirely
empirical adjustment. But it was striking - for example, when I set the receive
time to the lowest it would go, I was getting the dropouts more than once a
second.

It's early days, and I fear that when I try again the old problem will have
recurred. But for now, fingers crossed!

 Peter G. Viscarola [EMAIL PROTECTED] 26/08/07 23:01
I have been running Mixw 2.18, VAC 4.07 and PowerSDR 1.10.3 beta (SVNs
after the 1.10.2 release) most of the weekend and have not had a single
problem; PSK31, PSK63, RTTY and a bit of Olivia.

Thanks Tim. I think we're onto something here.

I tried the settings from the KB you cited... and while it CHANGED the
behavior, it didn't make it go away.

I've tried VAC Control Panel interrupt settings from 5ms (my normal
setting) to 7ms (what it shows in the KB) to even 20ms, and I didn't see
any difference in behavior.

On the other hand, I see LOTS of difference in behavior when I change
the Sample Rate on PowerSDR's VAC tab. I've had this set on 11025 (to
match MixW) -- And this works flawlessly in V1.8.0. But if I change it
to something higher (up to the 48000 as shown in the KB) for V1.8.0, I
get LOTS of pops (with any version of PowerSDR).

I couldn't find a sample rate in V1.10.2 that works for me and
eliminates the pops.

So... in summary: Changes in VAC Control Panel don't seem to have an
effect. Changes in PowerSDR's VAC tab seem to have a LOT of effect. In
V1.8.0 Buffer Size of 512 and Sample Rate of 11025 seem to work without
problem. In V1.10.2 neither these settings, nor any others I can
determine, seem to work correctly.

[Flexradio] Hiccups in digimodes

2007-08-25 Thread David Hilton-Jones
I wrote previously about a problem using digimodes - specifically using WSJT
with the SDR1K using VAC4.07.

On transmit, I had hiccups, to coin a phrase used by Jerry - it took the form
of brief drop-outs, lasting tens of milliseconds. I subsequently realised that
the same thing was also happening on receive, with mutiple short drop-outs
during each 30 second receive period.

Two solutions were suggested, but neither worked for me (using VAC4.04 instead
of 4.07, and changing SR from 11025 to 48000).

But I have found the answer! It involves changing the clock offset in the VAC
Control Panel. On transmit I have got rid of the hiccups completely by changing
the offset for the relevant virtual cable to 1.010. On receive I have reduced
the hiccups to only one or two per receive period by changing the offset to
1.008 - I haven't yet found a setting that eliminates the problem completely.

Hope this helps somebody else!

[Flexradio] digimode problem

2007-08-19 Thread David Hilton-Jones
I am having a problem with digimodes and would appreciate comments.

I am running a SDR-1K with DEM 144MHz transvwerter, which drives a 70MHz
transverter. I am using WSJT v 5.9.7 and VAC4.07.

When transmitting in any of the digimodes (i.e. FSK/JT6M/JT65) there are
frequent, but brief (several tens of milliseconds), interuptions to the
transmitted data stream. There is no problem when using SSB/FM/CW. So I am
presuming this is something to do with VAC. I have tried altering the ms per
int and clock corr with no effect.

I can still communicate, but it's irritating. Has anybody else had a similar
experience and found a solution?

Just to follow-up a previous thread - I am delighted to say that I have thrown
out the USB-parallel adaptor!!! I had no spare PCI slot but suddenly realised I
had a PCIexpress X1 slot which now contains a parallel port.

[Flexradio] PCI express advice

2007-08-13 Thread David Hilton-Jones
I am being driven demented by the repeated daily dropping out of my
USB-parallel adaptor.

When I bought the SDR-1K I bought a new computer. If I'd known the problems I
was going to have I'd have bought one with a parallel port, but I didn't.

My Dell Dimension E521 has two PCI slots - one is used for the Delta soundcard
and the other for a modem (we live in the Styx, can't get Broadband and so have
to use dial-up!).

I am therefore using USB and the adaptor. I have today fitted a powered USB
hub, but the problem remains.

I've just realised I've got a PCI-express x1 slot, and that parallel cards are
available for that. I'm a computer illiterate and would appreciate advice as to
whether that will solve my problem, or would I just be creating new ones.

I am so fed-up with the USB-parallel adaptor problem that I'm on the verge of
asking for my money back as the kit is not fit for purpose and it has
seriously affected why earlier positive thoughts about Flexradio - especially
as the latest version of Power SDR(Beta v1.9.1) won't even run with the
wretched adaptor and nobody at Flexradio seems interested in solving that
problem and producing new software. I'm blowed if I have to get another
computer with a parallel port to solve the problem.

I don't think my problems are all due to my computer illiteracy, but help and
advice would be much appreciated.

[Flexradio] USB-parallel drop out.

2007-08-06 Thread David Hilton-Jones
I know that this issue has been raised before but would appreciate hearing
peoples solutions.

My PC (Dell E521) doesn't have a parallel port. It has only two PCI slots - one
is used for a modem (we live too far away from the exchange and can't get
Broadband so have dial-up!), the other for the Delta 44.

So, I use the Flexradio supplied USB-parallel adaptor. It is a pain! Even when
not using the computer for any other purpose, the adaptor may drop out. Power
SDR then has to be shut down and restarted, and told the adaptor is in place.
If you don't shut it down, but just go to Setup, it won't accept ticking the
adaptor box.

Any tips/tricks gratefully received.

I guess I'm being stupid again but:

I've installed beta 1.9. I've re-run USBIO. When I go to Startup and tell it
the USB adapter is present I get an error message saying USB device not found

What I am doing wrong this time!?

[Flexradio] Problem installing vCOM and VAC

2007-05-28 Thread David Hilton-Jones
I am having a problem installing N8VB vCOM and VAC4.04.

I am following the instructions from KM0T. I install vCOM and VAC without any
problem.

When I go into Setup of PowerSDR the system crashes and I get a form of blue
screen of death telling me amongst other things that:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I have tried various combinations of pairs of ports but same outcome. E.G. I
used the pairs 14/24 and 15/25 to make sure I wasn't clashing with any others.

I suspect that the problem relates to other software clashes. I am using the
USB-Parallel adaptor with the SDR 1000 and also a USB to serial converter to
COM 5 (for a GPS receiver) and a USB to serial converter to COM 6 (for PTT with
WSJT)

Computer is a Dell Dimension E521 with Duo core and 2Gb memory.

As usual with computer problems, I am presuming it is my stupidity, but would
value help and advice.

[Flexradio] Transverters (again!)

2007-04-04 Thread David Hilton-Jones
I still haven't resolved my problem despite Eric's help.

I have an SDR1K with a built-in DEM 144MHz transverter. I use the
output of the 144 transverter to drive a 144MHz to 70MHz transverter.

So, I click on the 2 button of the Band Selection buttons, and the
second transverter inputs/outputs at 70MHz. Happiness, but the SDR
display shows 144MHz.

What I want is to set up a Band button labelled 70, and when I click on
it the DEM transverter is activated and the SDR display shows 70MHz.

I have not been able to achieve this through the XVTR Setup option -
which as far as I can see only works when using the HF output of the
SDR.

Sorry for the bandwidth, but any comments would be appreciated. Web
sites such as that of KM0T don't help, as he is using the HF output to
drive external transverters.

[Flexradio] Transverters

2007-04-01 Thread David Hilton-Jones
I have been used to getting a reply to my queries within seconds from
the ever-helpful Flexers. The fact I haven't had a reply to my last
query makes me fear I've asked a very stupid question! I'd appreciate a
comment in response to the following:

Having had fun playing with my SDR-1000 with 1 watt on HF, it's now
time to get it tamed for VHF work, which was the object of my purchase.

I have the 144MHz DEM transverter installed. I will be using that to
drive transverters for other VHF/UHF bands. If, for example, I am using
a 144-1296 transverter, I presume I have to click on the 2 metre button
and with the 144-1296 transverter connected to the 144 connections will
be QRV on 1296. is it possible to get the display to show 1296 rather
than 144?

As far as I can tell, the XVTR Setup only works when using an HF signal
to drive the transverter from the HF output of the SDR, or am I missing
something?

[Flexradio] 144-28FRS Problem

2007-02-18 Thread David Hilton-Jones
I apologise in advance for this posting, and realise I should wait until
tomorrow to discuss with the supplier, but my impatience to get going
got the better of me!

I took delivery of a SDR-1000 (1 watt version) a few days ago and am up
and running on HF. The suppliers (Waters and Stanton - who have given
excellent service) installed the 144-28FRS. I can not hear anything
through it, or get any 144MHz RF out of it. I appreciate that a likely
possibility is that I am doing something wrong, but can't see what that
is. I will check with WS tomorrow that they tested it live before
dispatch, and just possibly there is a hardware problem.

On Set-up I've told it that the transverter is installed.

On XVTRs I have enabled the first line, UCB 0, Button text 144, LO
offset 116.0, LO error 0, Begin Freq 144, End Freq 146, Rx gain 0.

When I transmit the signal meter says there is power output, but there
is nothing on 144MHz - but there is output at 28MHz on the appropriate
frequency from the QRP socket.

I am using the Parallel-USB converter.

Many thanks

[Flexradio] Computer requirements

2007-01-29 Thread David Hilton-Jones
Several people have kindly offered advice with respect to my previous
query about the use of duo core processors - I was concerned that such a
processor running at 1.88GHz would be a poorer option than a single
processor running at 3GHz. I'd have to say that the advice was a bit
conflicting but I think either would be OK - but make sure you have
plenty of memory.

I was also advised by Flexradio to use Windows XP Pro or Home Edition,
but to avoid XP Media.

So now a further question, for which I guess there is not yet an
answer, is what about Windows Vista?

I need to take the plunge and replace my computer, so any comments will
be received most gratefully.
