" multi-multi contest, monitor is very very important"

Why is that?

I believe the delay might be lessened by using the smallest possible dsp
and audio buffer sizes.

But I don't think u can totally get rid of it.. There's a set amount of
time your audio takes to get all processed and fill the buffers and exit
the radio.

Hello friends:
I am a Flex user 3 years ago.
This weekend i have had my first contest experience with the FLEX-5000A.
Is has been in the King of Spain SSB contest.
We have participated in Multi-Multi with 14 operators and 4 running
stations.
Some conclusiones:
-First the good points:
All operators have talked about his excelent selectivity. The FLEX
station

has been used only on 40 meters.
40 meters in this contest is very very saturated this is becouse the
great

selectivity of FLEX5000 has been great for us.
100% stable. We haven't had problems with stability using 1.18.6.
All operators have liked panadapter (of course).
We have had very good audio and signal reports.
Excelent looking for multipliers.

-Bad points (for me):
In a multi-multi contest, monitor is very very important. We haven't
could
use it becouse the delay. All operators told the same: MONITOR is needed
in

a contest.
Powersdr needs a FULL-LOCK button. NOT only the frequency, we need a
LOCK-ALL buttons. Involuntarily some operator have clicked on powersdr
buttons and we had some problems with this. Changind mode and some other
settings. In a contest, the non-flex operator must have powersdr locked
to

prevent involuntari changes.
Some operator were looking for buttons, but the didn't find them. This
wasn't a problem for me.
The same PC (Mac Book Pro) was used for PowerSDR and Win-Test.

What do you think?
How did you solve the monitor problem?
And what about the lock-all feature?

Thank's a lot.

just a waste of time.
Had they been RX only I think that I would have gotten the same result

the new version 2 doesn't even allow you to set up a transverter button's
power level?

(good grief)

Looks like a bug to me and also sad to say that most on the list really
aren't using the 5K with xvrters. I have found it ( the 5000) not very
user friendly for this purpose and I expect that all of those waiting for
the 1500 will have lots of bugs to fix that were never addressed on the
5K.
I bought the F5K for maximum Flexibilitiy and I don't think I should
have to have another rig for transverters... What about you?

I expected to see some specific examples of success with big-store PCs
in

the recent thread titled "Results from Big Box store quad cores", but
didn't.

I bought one in November 2009 and it has been working great. I run many
other applications at the same time without problems including most
importantly the full DXLabs suite or N1MM (I actually run both
sometimes
without DXLabs Commander as I use N1MM for rig control then). It even
runs
full HD video with an optical audio link at 1920 x 1080p so makes a
great
media computer also. Cost $450 list without monitor at the time. Costco
has
been carrying a similar Gateway Quad PC without monitor. I have seen it
in
Costco stores in both NH and UT recently. About $530 list without
monitor.
BTW, Costco has a great return policy on PCs. If you buy one, let me
know

how it works.

I will caution that I could not use the motherboard Firewire board on
my
Gateway successfully. Others have reported the same with the SX2800
series.

I purchased a $29 PCI express card that I use.

My full description of my setup is contained in the link below to my
November list email.

Perhaps others could list their successful configurations for the new

Carl

This is a great idea but I think we should list model numbers if possible
so

people can find the exact model you are using. Can you find a model number
and reply? Thats a great little machine for the bux!

I expected to see some specific examples of success with big-store PCs
in

the recent thread titled "Results from Big Box store quad cores", but
didn't.

I bought one in November 2009 and it has been working great. I run many
other applications at the same time without problems including most
importantly the full DXLabs suite or N1MM (I actually run both sometimes
without DXLabs Commander as I use N1MM for rig control then). It even
runs
full HD video with an optical audio link at 1920 x 1080p so makes a
great
media computer also. Cost $450 list without monitor at the time. Costco
has
been carrying a similar Gateway Quad PC without monitor. I have seen it
in
Costco stores in both NH and UT recently. About $530 list without
monitor.
BTW, Costco has a great return policy on PCs. If you buy one, let me
know

how it works.

I will caution that I could not use the motherboard Firewire board on my
Gateway successfully. Others have reported the same with the SX2800
series.

I purchased a $29 PCI express card that I use.

My full description of my setup is contained in the link below to my
November list email.

Re: [Flexradio] Fw: Videos of Flex on touchscreen and Tmate

2010-04-01 Thread N4PY2
I have the current version of the BOB S Meter running with my N4PY software
and powerSDR. The current version only supports a perseus interface, so I
had to implement a simple interface for it that talks perseus. I created a
virtual comport pair for N4PY and BOB Smeter to communicate. I also have
another virtual port pair for N4PY and powerSDR to communicate. The
BobSmeter program is a little touchy right now. You have to shut if off
before you exit either N4PY or BobSmeter. As long as you are careful that
you start it after N4PY and shut it down before shutting down N4PY, it does
not lock up.

I can make this version of N4PY available to anyone that wants to set it up.
My program will run for 10 days without a password. to try it out. Just let
me know. I have not added this to my website yet.

[Flexradio] Fw: Videos of Flex on touchscreen and Tmate

2010-03-31 Thread N4PY2

All you have to do is create a virtual comport pair using VSPManager, N8VB,
or COM0COM. Then you set one of the comport pairs in the powerSDR CAT
window and the other one in the S meter program.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5000A and WPX

2010-03-29 Thread N4PY2
If you really want to have a fantastic tuning knob for a Flex radio and you
just happen to have Tentec Jupiter or Pegasus, and also have the Tentec
remote tuning pod, my N4PY software allows you to hook up the tentec tuning
pod through a Pegasus or Jupiter. This knob can tune your flex radio much
better and faster than anything else I have ever seen. And the keyboard
focus can be anywhere. Additionally, the knob can be instantly changed to
over 20 different functions such as RIT or VFO B control through the use of
the 15 keys that are on the pod. Again, all of this functions regardless of
where the keyboard and mouse focus happens to be.

Subject: [Flexradio] Which PowerSDR version to use?

Hello All,

I just purchased a Flex 5000a. I'm a little confused about which PowerSDR
to install.

On the downloads page for it
(http://support.flex-radio.com/Downloads.aspx?fr=1) there are just
graphics

skins for PowerSDR 2.x and no software.

The CD that came with the radio only has v1.18.5 on it.

Is v1.18.5 the latest "mainstream" release? Is 2.x is still under
development?

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5000a RX below 550 Khz

2010-03-14 Thread N4PY2

Bob,

I listen regularly to signals below 500 khz, including many airport beacons
as low as 200 khz. I made a low pass filter for 500 khz and it completely
removed all the broadcast band signals. Direct conversion receivers will
receive signals quite well at all the multiples of the tuned frequency. If
you are tuned to 300 khz, you will receive 600 khz, 900 khz, 1200 khz, and
so on quite well. The fix is to install a low pass filter that cuts off at
something less than the times 2 frequency. The F5K has built in low pass
filters for each ham band to solve this for the ham bands. The receive loop
built into the F5K is the perfect place to install this filter.

This is the link for the filter I built.

I want to thank everyone who replied to my question about the Flex 5000
reception below the broadcast band.
Unfortunatley there seems to be a pretty big difference in opinions about
this so I am going to try and build or purchase a filter to see for myself
if this radio can RX there or not.
I just planned to do some casual listening down there and I am not
expecting SUPER performance in that part of the spectrum. I am however
expecting equal performance to my TS2000X down there.

Re: [Flexradio] 5000A Transverter setup issues

2010-01-26 Thread N4PY2

Bob,

In order to use the hi-drive transverter, you need to run powerSDR at 28 mhz
with the drive set to 10 watts. My N4PY software can assist here as it has
its own transverter interfacing scheme and you can then at least get the
N4PY program to display the 144 mhz operaing frequency. The N4PY program
will also take care of setting the correct antenna port and drive level that
you define in the N4PY program.

Subject: [Flexradio] 5000A Transverter setup issues

I placed this on the Flex forum and nobody seems to want to bite so I
thought I would try it here.
I have a 10 watt drive 28/144 Mhz transverter that I thought I could use
on my Flex 5000A when it got here.
From what I had read and heard I figured that all I had to do was
configure a band button and assign that button an antenna port and power
level. (wrong) What I found here was that even though you assign your VHF
button an antenna port it only goes to the dedicated transverter port.
The real problem comes in when I found that the transverter port can only
be adjusted from Ƙ to 5 DBM.
So am I missing something? Is anyone using a hi-drive transverter on the
Flex 5000A and if so were you able to get it to work with a band button and
show 144 on the rfrequency display?
I am guessing that the transverter port was hard wired in before the final
PA so getting 10 watts out of it is out of the question.
Can the band buttons or transverter setup be changed to allow the use of
the other antenna connectors for hi-drive transverters?
I also have hi-drive 144 (if) transverters and fear that the same issue
might happen with the VHF/UHF module in the future.

Tim,

I feel very dumb, but I don't fully understand what you are saying here.

"you CAN NOT upgrade 1.x.x.x based firmware with the new 3.5.0.7171
Firewire driver."

"Therefore, you should upgrade your radio's firmware to the latest
1.x.x.x version BEFORE installing the updated FLEX Firewire driver. "

That would seem to be contradictory!

Do you mean we must upgrade to firmware 2.x.x.x before installing
3.5.0.7171?

I'm using firmware 1.3.0.6 and driver 3.4.2.6200. (5000A, XP) What
should I upgrade to and in what order?

From: "Tim (W4TME)"

To all FLEX-5000 and FLEX-3000 users,

There is a new FLEX Firewire driver that is available for upgrade.

===[ Special Instructions ]==

 >>>PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAVEAT - IT IS VERY IMPORTANT <<<

With the release of the new FLEX Firewire driver, version 3.5.0.7171, we
are changing the way firmware is updated on your software defined radio.
Previously, you executed a file that was known an "auto loader". When
you executed this file, the firmware was placed on your PC's hard driver
and then a DOS or Command window was displayed instructing you through
the remainder of the firmware upgrade process. Running this command
prompt based utility cause a few problems for some newer Windows
operating systems which is one of several reasons we are changing the
firmware upgrade method. The new way of updating firmware is by using
an "applet" embedded in the FLEX Firewire control panel.

Because current FLEX-x000 firmware with a version number of 1.x.x.x was
created with an older version of the Firewire driver, you CAN NOT
upgrade 1.x.x.x based firmware with the new 3.5.0.7171 Firewire driver.

Therefore, you should upgrade your radio's firmware to the latest
1.x.x.x version BEFORE installing the updated FLEX Firewire driver. If
you do not do this or need to revert to a earlier version of firmware
after loading the new driver, the firmware install process becomes a bit
more difficult due to the firmware binary and driver dependency that
exists.

When PowerSDR v2.0.0 is released, it will require v2.x.x.x based
firmware that is 100% compatible with the new Firewire driver, so once
the updated version of PowerSDR is released this caveat will no longer
be applicable.

===[ New Features ] ==

1.) The new FLEX Firewire driver, v3..5.0.7171 is fully compatible with
Win7, Vista and XP using either the 64 or 32-bit "flavors". It is also
compatible with all released versions of PowerSDR.

2.) The new Firewire driver has feature that can check the compatibility
of your Firewire host controller (Firewire card) with the FLEX Firewire
driver.

With this version of the FLEX Firewire driver, you can run a control
panel applet that will check your Firewire card's chipset and tell you
if it is compatible with the FLEX Firewire driver. It will also inform
you of any missing service packs or Windows system driver configuration
problems. This new feature will take the guess work out of determining
if your Firewire card will work with the FLEX Firewire driver.

To access the new applet, once the driver is installed
1.) Open the Firewire control panel
2.) Click on the SYSTEM button at the top.
3.) Check the "Look Online for latest info" option
4.) Check the "Show Additional Details" option
5.) Click on the "Scan Now" button
6.) A description of the Firewire host controller's chipset(s) in your
system will be displayed indicating the support level and any
configuration error that my be present.

If your Firewire host controller's chipset is not fully supported, then
you should consider getting an adapter with a supported chipset.

[ Upgrading your Firewire driver ]==

When upgrading your FLEX Firewire driver make sure you follow the
instruction very carefully in the following KB article. The screen
displays shown in this article will be a little different because of the
version change, but the process is still the same. It is recommended
that you power off your FLEX-x000 SDR and remove the existing driver and
reboot your PC before installing the new driver.
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50137.aspx

 >>> PLEASE REVIEW THE AFOREMENTIONED KB ARTICLE BEFORE PROCEEDING. <<<

You can download the new firmware using the following URL

I was also a long time user of Logic. Started back with Logic 1 or 2
(can't remember). I think Logic is an excellent logging program. If it
were not for the issues ( I had) with interfacing the Flex with it, I
would likely still be using it.

Now that being said, because of the issues I gave DXLabs a try. I made
the conversion about 3 years ago and have not looked back. All went
smooth. I did lose some of my QSO notes from Logic in the transfer,
but made no special effort to save them. There are some adif data
massaging programs that could be used to maybe prevent that from
happening. I made the transition knowing that I could always go back
to Logic and put more effort into resolving the issue with the flex
interfacing.

When I first made the change to DxLabs I had a bit of "switchers
remorse", but that lasted about 2 days! Then I was hooked.

The bottom line is that DX Labs is an amazing program. ( and it's free
- with incredible product support) Regardless of what radio I was
using, If I knew what I know now about this program I would have made the
switch.

to 150 watts . I did the Ctrl Shift F to calibrate the power, all
calibrated fine until it got to 6m . At that point PSDR would stop and
shut down.

Reading the mail on the reflector, I read were all calibrating need's to
be done using the official release. Today I installed Drivers,Firmware
and PSDR from the Flex web page (front page) Doing the power calibrate,
all HF bands did fine, This time when it got to 6m, it did not shut down
PSDR ... It just sat there and did nothing, I could see a wave form in
the filter bandwidth and the Mox tab was highlighted . I Gave it may be 5

I tried this with 2 different OS, windows XP home and Windows 7 32 bit.
their was no change with either,

Re: [Flexradio] What is the best/safest way to ship my Flex back toAustin for repairs?

2009-11-30 Thread N4PY2
About 4 years ago, Tentec had always used UPS for all their shipping. They
changed to Fedex because it was a little cheaper. After 6 months, they
found the breakage rate for Fedex was much higher than UPS and not worth the
shipping savings. So they changed back to UPS. I think this is very
meaningful because Tentec ships a lot.

All shipping companies will have some breakage. It is the rate of breakage
that needs to be compared. I personally have shipped about 50 items by UPS
in the last 10 years and have had absolutely no problems.

I just wont run that because I find it stupid to run HRD just to use the

Remember that from the viewpoint of external software, such as DX
Commander,

the real radio is PowerSDR. It does not matter which hardware platform
PowerSDR is controlling. Therefore, the SDR-1000 setting applies equally
well to the FLEX-3000 & FLEX-5000.

Re: [Flexradio] block out of band transmissions

2009-10-31 Thread N4PY2
I put a user defineable text file in my N4PY software to handle differing
license priveleges in different countries. This works quite well. With
this file properly setup, my program can block things like accidental SSB
transmission in the CW portion of 40 meters when working split DX on 40
meters. I would think Flex could add something similar.

It will be. The challenge is that there are region and country/entity

considered. It isn't a trivial enhancement.

All,

I have already logged a similar feature request. I do hope that this
feature will be present in the new software architecture.

73, Frank DG1SBG

Am 31.10.2009 um 16:00 schrieb K9DUR:

Art,

This should be entered as a feature request.

There is a relatively simple way to accomplish this using the BandText
table. The BandText table already contains a yes/no field named "TX".
Currently, all that PowerSDR uses that field for is to change the
color of
the text displayed. However, that field could be added to the logic
determining whether transmit is allowed or not. That way, the
BandText
table could be set up for your class of license and prevent
inadvertent
transmission on frequencies where you do not have any privileges.

Re: [Flexradio] Low Frequency and BCB progress

2009-09-17 Thread N4PY2

Jordan,

That filter should work well for you. I use my filter in series with my
beverage antenna (600 foot long wire, 4 feet above the ground). I have a
DPDT switch on it that allows me to switch it in and out. The reason the
filter is needed is the F5K will respond very well to signals that are twice
the desired frequency. Since there is already a 2 khz low pass in the F5K
when tuned below 2 khz, you should be fine receiving BCB signals until you
go below 850 khz since the top of the BCB is 1700 khz. I find I can switch
my filter in at about 850 khz. Listening to stations between 550 and 850
khz, this filter helps tremendously since it greatly attentuates signals
that would be at 1100 to 1700 khz ( the times 2 frequency). Since the
cutoff of the filter is about 530 khz, this filter also helps tremendously
for signals down to 265 khz or so. I find below 265 khz, there are once
again many spurious signals showing on the panadapter. So building another
filter with a cutoff of 200 khz or so, could get me down to 100 khz for
receiving.

Hi again Flexers

I have made some progress in eliminating some of the images and false

I installed 2 more 6' ground rods with one of them just below the shack
window and the 2nd 6 ft away from the firstI used 1/2" wide copper
strapping to run to the connections for the Flex-5000 , and I also added
a solid ground directly to the computer case under one of the power
supply machine screws

I now can tune across the BCB with very little problem due to images or
spurs...
I do have some BCB signals that are at the -5dBm level, which is rather
strong, but they don't cause any problems in the 540-1700khz region, and
only a few images/spurs remain above 2Mhz

I have also just received my Tiny SCR 1.8-30 Mhz preselector, but it
will be a day or two before I can do further testing here as I'm trying
to take advantage of the nice weather to improve the LF antenna system
here

Now if I could only figure out how to wind 80ft of #26 wire on the
T-200-3 toroid ...! More later73...Jordan VE6ZT

FlexRadio Systems - Austin, TX - September 15, 2009

FLEX-3000 PREAMPLIFIER IMPROVEMENT

Dear FLEX-3000 customers:

FlexRadio Systems recently incorporated an engineering change to the
FLEX-3000(TM) receiver preamplifier that improves IP2 and IP3 performance
when the preamplifier is engaged. This change was incorporated into all
new

production or repaired FLEX-3000s beginning September 1, 2009.

To determine if your radio has the updated preamplifier ECO, start the
PowerSDR software. From the main screen click on SETUP/GENERAL /Hardware
Options and look at the last character of the TRX board serial number.
Version "G" or higher indicates the IP2 improvement has been installed. Go
to http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50430.aspx for a
screenshot

showing the revision number location.

If you would like to have your FLEX-3000 updated, please email us at
r...@flex-radio.com to receive an RMA and schedule your return to your
closest FlexRadio Systems service center for modification. Why the word
"Schedule"? We plan to do upgrades in batch-mode. You will be
responsible
for the shipping charges to the closest FlexRadio service center.
FlexRadio
will cover the cost of modification and return shipping once completed.
To

help our technical staff be most efficient, we'll extend this free update
offer until December 31, 2009. After December 31, 2009, a nominal $50
bench

fee plus return shipping costs will be assessed for the modification.

NOTE: You must contact FlexRadio Systems to request a Return Material
Authorization (RMA) number before you return your radio. Please email

Given everything said so far, it would be interesting to load the feedline
at the rear of the Flex up with Mix 31 ferrite snap-ons and see how or if
that affects anything.

I've seen common-mode currents affect the accuracy of both
unbalanced-input reflectometers *and* directional couplers. Who knows if
I'm correct in this case, but it would be an easy experiment to perform.

Interesting. Theoretically SWR should not change anywhere along the
feed line to the load (except it will drop farther from the load as a
function of feed line loss). Impedance seen at any point along the
line *will* change but SWR will not.

A standing wave on a perfect coax feed line is a function of a
termination by a resistance other than the impedance of the feed line
(mismatch). The result is that a portion of the RF power will be
absorbed by the terminating resistor and a portion will be reflected back
toward the source of the RF power. The forward power and the reflected
power will by definition be out of phase and combine to create standing
peaks and valleys along the length of the feed line at points relating to
the frequency of the RF power being generated.

The majority of SWR meters measure the RF voltage of the forward power
and the reflected power and compare them to create a ratio (VSWR). It
should also be possible to use RF current detectors instead and produce a
ISWR, or measure forward and reflected power to produce PSWR. In all
three cases the ratio should be the same at any point along the coax.

I am not sure about your statement that the SWR will drop as the
measurement point is further from the load. I will have to give that
some thought. I suppose given an infinite length of line ... the
reflected power will become smaller with distance as compared to power
from the source depending on the sampling point along the line thus
changing the ratio. I guess your statement is correct.

Playing with a Smith chart will
show you why as you move around an SWR circle and see the load
appearing to change from resistive (high), to capacitive reactive, to
resistive (low), to inductive reactive, etc. The angle changes but the
magnitude of the vector (SWR) does not.

As you indicate, as you introduce either capacitive or inductive
reactance into the load impedance the phase between RF I and E will shift
with the result that VSWR, ISWR, or PSWR (depending on how you measure
it) . or how E and I look on a scope, will change as you move the
sampling point along the coax line.

So, if the SWR display in the Flex 5000 changes with feed line length
then the SWR indication is not displaying SWR but something else. It
would be useful to know that so that so we can ignore the SWR display
in PowerSDR (or not).

Or, you might say that the VSWR becomes distorted by virtue of a complex
impedance load. This is true regardless of the radio or measurement
instrument used.

Re: [Flexradio] How accurate is the SWR meter in PSDR?

2009-08-31 Thread N4PY2
The problem is the coax becomes part of the antenna and changes the
impedance of the antenna. This of course then causes the SWR to change.

Hmm. Good point. I was thinking in terms of the coax doing what it is
supposed to do, with no current flowing on the outside. The current on
the inside and outside of the coax shield could (would) be different.
Still, would that change the SWR on the inside? If the shield is
continuous and unbroken (a proper Faraday cage) wouldn't the SWR
measured on the inside of the coax remain constant? And if so, would a
changing SWR therefore be an indication of an imperfect shield such
that some of the current flowing on the outside can then "wrap around"
and flow on the inside, changing the measured value?

Funny stuff this RF flowing on the surfaces of conductors.

[Flexradio] How accurate is the SWR meter in PSDR?

2009-08-31 Thread N4PY2

If the outside shield of the coax is radiating at all, then the SWR is not
constant along a feedline. Differences in SWR along a feed line indicate
the coax outer shield has become part of the antenna.

Sounds like someone needs to do an experiment. Probably the easiest
way to do it would be to terminate different lengths of feed line, the
longest only needing to be 1/2 wave as after that the results will
repeat, in a known mismatch, say 100 ohms or 25 ohms (2:1 SWR)
resistive. (A 'T' at then end of the feed line with two 50 ohm dummy
loads would make a perfect 2:1 test load of 25 ohms.) As one changes
the feed line length the impedance should change but not the SWR.

I may try it later as I have a lot of different pieces of LMR-400 coax
I can use but I encourage someone else who can do it more quickly than
I to do so as I probably won't get to it for a couple of days.

[Flexradio] What to turn off in XP

2009-08-06 Thread N4PY2
I purchased my Flex 5000A on June 1, 2009. I am running an Emachines PC I
bought at Walmart in June of 2008. I am running XP Home Edition. I am
running powerSDR 1.18.2.

This is what I did to make things run nicely.

1) Turned off TCP/IP for the firewire card.
2) Disabled windows search indexing.
3) Set powerSDR priority to "Above Normal".

I have been running with this setup now for almost 2 months. I can run
outlook express and firefox with no problems at all. My PC is a 2 ghz PC
with 1 GB of RAM. It is not dual core. I find my CPU usage runs at 20 to
30 percent. This is working great.

YOU MUST NOT RUN ANYTHING ELSE

PERIOD!!

No anti-virus. No email. No browser. No backup software. No automatic

even run the firewall in Windows. I don't do QoS queueing, no IPSEC,
no encryption services, nothing. I even disable the Microsoft Network
(NetBIOS over TCP). I want the OS to do only a few things:

1. basic file system;
2. memory management;
3. task scheduling;
4. interprocess communications;
5. the absolute minimum of window management.

Until we have a good way to share functionality across the network I
don't even want to run a TCP/IP connection!

The biggest problem right now is that you have to cold-start when the new

release candidate. Its only about 15 weeks until the official release so
take the summer off and let things progress. Most people would wait for the

We are going to try to get a 40 meter net going tonight.. I can't tell
you the exact frequency yet, but look for any Flexers between 7180 to
7200 at 7 PM Central time (8 PM Eastern, which is 0200 GMT) . All those
with Flex Radios should be able find us pretty easy, those without the

look for Hank, K9LZJ or myself, WA5QPZ ..
40 meters has gotten so much better in the evenings, this might work for

[Flexradio] Flex 5000 low pass filter

2009-07-21 Thread N4PY2
From suggestions from several people that answered me about a BCB low pass

filter, I built the NDB junk box low pass filter.

http://www.qrp.pops.net/ (See the topics for 2006 - 2009)

This filter has a high cutoff frequency of 533 khz. Adding this filter in
my RX loop allows me to find the NDB airport beacons in the range of 190 to
530 khz. The filter works quite well at this and the F5K does well at
receiving in this range. The filter does not have a sharp cutoff at 533 khz
and I am finding that I can use it up to about 800 khz on the AM broadcast
band. From 540 to 800 khz the filter does very well at removing the BCB
signals that would interfere and be at 1080 to 1600 khz. So I find this
filter does well for both BCB SWLing and NDB finding. The filter was very
easy to make.

Subject: [Flexradio] SAM Problem

Updated last night to the latest PowerSDR software 1.18.1 and the latest
1.3.06 firmware for my Flex 5000A. Ran the RX level and image calibration
tests and everything passed (of course with new database). No problems
detected so far except noise blanker performance doesn't seem to be as
good as previous versions, and the synchronous AM detection now seems to
have a severe AGC problem. When I switch to SAM all seems well. But when
I transmit and return to receive it's as if the receiver gain has been
reduced by half. If I switch to sideband and then back to SAM the
receiver sounds fine initially, then sounds as if the gain starts
reducing on its own. This happens when there is no AM signal on the band.
I've tried it on 6 meters and 10 meters and the result is the same.
Anyone else run into this problem? Running on a quad core PC with 32 bit
Vista.

Thanks, Tim.

I installed the DPCLAT tool. I am seeing consistent 1000 micro-sec
latency

on the DPCLAT tool. Oh, there are a few drops to 500 microseconds, and a
few spikes of 16000 microseconds or greater.

I have disabled everything I can think of in the Device manager, without
impairing the machine:

* Wireless network card (even tried the LAN card) - no change
* Tablet pen input
* Other USB controllers, except for the one with the mouse and the one
with

the keyboard
* Internal computer sound card
* Any other human interface devices not in use

I also took a look at the services which are running. I cannot find any
which would still affect the machine. Antivirus is off...Vista search
indexer is off. I am running Windows Basic for display, not Aero glass
for

Vista.

CPU shows about 11% utilization, 850MB out of 2 GB of memory in use.

Interesting test - when I unplug the firewire connection, the latency
drops
WAY down, to about 50 microseconds...with only a spike of 1000
microseconds

every 5 seconds or so. As soon as the firewire cable goes back in, we go
back up to 1000 microseconds again. The driver is dated June 2006, that
was

just before gold code of Vista came out. I checked (RICOH OHCI Compliant
IEEE 1394 Host Controller) and the installed version looks like the latest
one available:

http://www.pcpitstop.com/drivers/download/RICOH~OHCI~Compliant~IEEE~1394~Hos
t~Controller.html

So we have met the enemy which is causing the latency, and it is US. The
firewire connection is causing a latency which is affecting the
performance
of the firewire connection. How about that! Talk about going in
circles...

I don't suppose there is anything I can do at this point

Have you tried resetting the database. With all your crashes, it could be
corrupted.

WSJT will change around the soundcard device numbers when soundcards are
re-recognized. It is one of the most difficult soundcard programs to get
setup and working right.

I highly recommend that you start with a much simpler configuration and
get

things working before going on to the more advanced configurations. You
need to divide and conquer.

Start out without doing any digital setup and get RX stable first. If you
can not get past this step, trying a more complex configuration will be
futile.

So, reset your database. Set the sampling rate to 96 KHz, the buffer to
2048. Make sure the Firewire driver is set for the same buffer size and
verify that you are using SafeMode1. Do *not* change any other parameters
in the database.

There is a program or something on that machine that is probably
interfering

with the real-time operation of your computer. You need to run the DPC
checker all the time to see what you computer is doing - before starting
PowerSDR and after. I suspect the freezes are the result of a long
duration

DPC. Use DPCLAT to monitor this condition.
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50058.aspx

Run this for a while and record the DPC max and average times in
microseconds.

The KVM switch might be a problem, but I use one from BlackBox and I do
not

have any problems with it.

Subject: [Flexradio] PowerSDR "freeze" and AM Broadcast spurii on 40m
withFlex-5000?

I took delivery of my Flex 5000 a couple of days ago - everything is
working fine except for...

- Periodic hangs where PowerSDR "freezes" and the audio output
stops. Pressing Stop then start on PowerSDR gets everything going
again. I've run the latency checker and the max its seen was 900us -
this on a Duo Quad Core at 2.33 GHZ, Vista X64. The machine is
dedicated to the radio. I'm still trouble shooting this one following
the suggestions in the KB (disabling virus checker etc.). The system
runs fine for hours and then hangs - odd. Typical CPU utilization is <
15%.

- I have a set of spurii on 40m from local broadcast stations
on the AM band. For example, AM860 is perfectly decodable on 7.0039,
AM910 at 7.0539, AM1010 at 7.1539... the frequency spacing on the AM
band is reflected on the spurii. This goes above and below the 40 band.

I have dual RX in the Flex - RX2 is fed via its RX2 input from my home
built K9AY loop which has a very effective hi pass filter with an almost
brick wall response at 1.7 MHz.When using RX2 input from the K9AY
there are no spurii on RX2 - using RX1 is fed from an R5 vertical, 160m
inverted L, G5RV and a 30m vertical dipole.

Checking the two receivers via the antenna selection panel shows the
following.

RX1- Spurii on Inverted L (strongest), Vertical Dipole and G5RV
- none on the R5

RX2- Spurii same as RX1 when fed via RX1 tap (not a surprise),
none on the R5 and NONE on the K9AY

Since some of the antennae are clear, it pretty much eliminates the BCI
getting in via other cables (audio, 10 MHz GPSDO reference), etc.

Have others seen this? I saw some reference on the mailer archive of
this being a side effect of the single conversion of the FLEX so I
suspect this isn't new news.

I'm thinking of a BCI filter (same design as in my K9AY) in the RX1
receive loop - any suggestions/pointers to either of these issues
gratefully received!

Thanks!

Note heading change, as this is no longer anything to do with speakers.

I have completely disabled keyboard shortcuts, as I find that, when I have
several apps open at once (eg logger, chat window) I am forever forgetting
to change focus. I start typing, only to find that PowerSDR had focus,
and has suddenly done something I didn't want - irritating in the extreme.

I had a shaft encoder from a much older project, which has a heavy wheel
and can be spun. I have modified an old mouse and interfaced the shaft
encoder with the old mouse wheel circuit. That part works fine, but I
find that PowerSDR can't keep up with the pulse rate, and the PC beeps at
me if I spin the wheel too fast. (I wish someone would fix that) So I am
back to dragging the pan display for large changes and using the knob for
small ones. Nothing gained over the original mouse wheel, really!

This is an interesting example of how a tiny change in user-interface
can make a huge difference in usability. I too like a VFO knob. It is
actually a very natural way to change frequency and everyone is very
comfortable using it. On other radios it works very well. Older radios
with analog VFOs have a much faster tuning rate so that one can use
the finger dimple and quickly QSY from one end of the band to the
other. Once you get near the desired frequency, the fact that the VFO
is analog means that you can tune spot-on just by turning the knob
very slowly.

Newer radios approach the problem a different way. Newer radios either
have a PLL or DDS VFO which tunes in discrete steps. The problem is,
you want to go quickly when QSY-ing to the other end of the band and
then you want to go slowly when you tune to the final frequency. I
have seen two approaches to this problem which work pretty well:

1. use a small step-size but have a free-wheeling weighted VFO knob
that can be spun very quickly to make gross frequency changes and yet
still have a reasonable step size, usually around 10Hz, that will let
you tune in the desired signal when you get near;

2. use "acceleration" to increase the step size when tuning quickly,
e.g. 100Hz, and then change to a smaller step size when tuning slowly.

The problem with the Griffin knob is that you can't spin it. So in
order to move quickly you need to change to a much larger step size.
That precludes final tuning of the signal without changing the step
size again. Some use the ability to push down on the knob to change
the step size but then it is more awkward as you are trying to push
and turn at the same time. So the only way to make the Griffin knob
work well would be to apply acceleration when turning the knob
rapidly.

So you can see why the Griffin knob is not particularly useful AS IT
IS CURRENTLY IMPLEMENTED. If one were to add acceleration to frequency
selection in PowerSDR, the Griffin knob would become very useful and
desirable.

As it is, I think most people have adopted the same approach to
solving the problem: drag the panadaptor display for gross frequency
changes and use the mouse-wheel for fine tuning. Both are accomplished
from the mouse which saves moving one's hands around to different
places. If that is going to be the preferred method of tuning the
radio then I would deprecate the use of the Griffin knob entirely.

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR 1.18.1 AGC-T lag

Bob,

I think you're on to something.

With AGC at slow, medium, or long, there is a noticeable lag. It may be
different length of time within those three, my ears aren't calibrated
enough to say for sure.

With AGC at fast or fixed, there is no perceptible (to me) lag.

In all cases, any lag occurs only when sliding the cursor from
left-to-right. There is no lag going right-to-left in any setting.

Someone emailed me to say that the same behavior also happens with his
quad-core machine, so I conclude it's not my CPU.

I'm not sure that this is a problem or is the intended behavior. It's
most noticeable when you've had the AGC set for strong signals, and
slide it right to bring up a weak one. Can blow your ears off if you're
not careful... I'm used to it now so I just move the cursor slowly and
let it catch up. I usually use the medium setting.

/Jack

[Flexradio] 6 meter preamp

2009-06-20 Thread N4PY2

What are people using for a good 6 meter preamp on the Flex-5000A?

On a related issue, I use a beverage and currently have it connected to RX1
in. If I add a 6 meter premap and then use rx1 in and rx1 out to connect
it, I thought I could then use Ant 1 or Ant 2 for my beverage. (I am using
Ant 3 for my main antenna connection). But I notice powerSDR will not let
me select ant 1 for receive and ant 3 for transmit. Is this a hardware
limitation?

In various previous e-mails ...

-
The one gripe I have is the lack of an ability to lock the panadaptor.
Operating this radio is a very visual process, and I would lose the
pattern of activity when changing the main rx frequency. I realize I can
leave that alone and hunt with the sub-rx, but really it would be
desirable to have both freely available. I know this has been talked about
before, but I can't remember where to go to add my support to the
enhancement list.

Overall, a very positive experience.

-
and
-
I agree with NU8I's comments on the need to be able to lock the
panadapter.

Oh, no kidding! This is perhaps the biggest problem of PowerSDR. It
makes click-tune painfully difficult to use. You have to wait a second
or two until the waterfall display starts to repaint in order to see
what is going on and where the signals have moved. If Flex could fix
only one feature this would be it for me!

---

You can ALMOST do this now... If you wish to TEST DRIVE how this might
feel in operation (assumes no RX 2)

1. Set VFO A to center the pan adapter to the range of interest.
2. Set Multi RX on.. Turn down the VFO A RX volume (right hand vertical
slider in MulitRX box )

3. Enable SPLIT and 'show TX filter on Display'
4. Click the RIGHT mouse button twice to get the RED cross hairs in the
pan adapter.
5. Click the LEFT mouse button to set VFO B to the signal you wish to
listen to.
HINT: since most casual and net operation is on 1 Khz or 500 hz
intervals, set tune step size to 500.

CAVEATS: software limitations:
1. The mouse wheel currently only operates VFO A. To fine tune a signal
move your mouse pointer into the VFO B window then use the mouse wheel.
2. Drag tunning can not be used.. 3. Only one RX (VFO B) is usable with
this demo.
4. Its too easy to drop out of the VFO B ( read cross hair) click tune
control mode.

CAVEATS: hardware limitations.
1. The Spur Reduction algorithm attempts to avoid DDS spurs in the VFO A
RX area (i.e. DDS + 9KHZ if). You may need to toggle RS differently for
VFO B RX than for VFO A RX.
2. The RX Image rejection is optimal for VFO A RX (i.e. DDS + 9KHZ if).
Image Rejection for VFO B RX may not be as good..

( I am not sure how WBIR effects this observation.)
3. If VFO B RX is tuned to the DDS frequency ( VFO A - 9KHZ if), it will
be tuned to the 0KHZ (DC) IF frequency.
Each of these hardware Caveats is particularly noticeable with then
SDR-1000, not so much noticeable with the F5K ( F3K ?? ) and a non-factor
with Mercury HPSDR ( uses DDC, no DDS).

Future ???
1. Obviously the demo would be more useful if the mouse wheel could
control VFO B.
2. A second level of operability could result from allowing VFO B to
control the DDS. Would have mouse wheel control and drag tuning but still
only one RX.
3. With two front panel selector buttons, full operation could be
achieved...

Button one: DDS tracks VFO A ( current normal operation)
Button two: Set DDS to current VFO A frequency ( - IF) and freeze it
there.
Both VFO A and VFO B then control software IF
frequencies within the limits of the pan adapter.

I would probably not want to run this DEMO in the heat of a contest, but
it does give a different feel to the radio.
With proper software tweeks, it could be a useful operational option
provided the hardware limitations are not objectionable (see caveats
above).

Hi,
I just noticed today on all versions of SDR that on 30 meters (the only
band I've noticed it so far) , there is a distinct low level whine
between the frequencies of 10.109.769 and 10.102.139. Tuning through
those freq's the whine will start and stop, however it remains when SDR
is stopped, when SDR is closed and only stops when the radio is
physically shut off, or when loading a new instance of SDR, it will stop
during the loading process before the GUI actually comes up. I can
clearly hear it in the headphones, but not sure about the speaker
output, I can't verify that. Anyone run across this one ??

I would like to use my Flex5000 for AM broadcast band RX DXing. The images
below 1 MHz are terrible. As per the Flex specifications:

'Customer provided preselector or appropriately selected low pass filters
required to eliminate images when used below 1.8 MHz'

Has anyone bought/built a filter? If so, what was it?

The serial cable connection must be a null modem connection. That is pin 3
on the computer end needs to go to pin 2 on the amp end. And of course pin

You can monitor the communications between PowerSDR and whatever you have
connected on the serial ports using a freebie port monitor like Portmon.
This will verify that you indeed do or do not have serial communications.

Somebody mentioned that maybe a straight-thru cable is needed, and maybe a
null-modem cable (pins2-3 reversed). Is anyone sure what is needed?
Has anyone got one working that can put an ohmmeter from pin2 to pin2 and
see if they are connected? Or if pin2 goes to pin 3???

OK, I did the above, strangely when I checked "Enable CAT" all the
port speed, data bits and stop bits greyed out. Is that normal

Tried testing the tracking (THP set to Kenwood), change bands on
PowerSDR without transmitting, the THP did not light any band
light. It did work in manual. Here are my possible culprits:

1. PowerSDR bug, explains greyed out choices
2. Wrong port used (my comp has 2). I tried not to do this
3. Bad cable (I have another but it is close to too short)
4. Bad THP (I kind of doubt this unless it is a problem in the
Kenwood port, because manual works).

Any comments, clues or ???

Also, there is a caution in the THP literature that high power spikes
on the first part of a transmission can overload the finals,
shortening their life. Anyone have any experience with this on Flex
radios???

[Flexradio] Amp Keying and chopped key elements

2009-06-04 Thread N4PY2
I am using an Acom 1000 with my F5K. I am keying the amp with Am Key TX1.
In order to not get an arc fault on the amp, I have to set the the delay for
TX1 to about 100 msec. I am also running break in CW with the break in
delay set at 75 msec. When I listen to my signal on another receiver, the
dah elements are coming out as dits and the dit elements are not there at
all. I am keying the radio with an external keyer at only 20 wpm. The only
solution I see at the moment is to key PTT and send manual CW.

My keyer is a winkey keyer and I know I can use the PTT line and set a PTT
lead time to fix this with the keyer, but does anyone know of another
solution. It seems CW keying is a very weak point on the F5K.

To look at what IRQ's are shared

Control Pane>> System Properties>>Hardware>>Device Manager

View
Resources by connection

Interrupt request brings up a list which shows what is on what IRQ.

To look at what your Delays are like

Launch Flex Driver ICON looks like a Computer with a FIREWIRE SYMBOL (Get
the driver from the Flex Site if you do not have it, latest version)

Global Settings (Third Button at top from Right)

Click Enable DPC Latency Checker

Let run for 5 minutes and you should see what your latency is doing.

Hope that helps.

I'm tuning up my system in anticipation of the arrivial of my new Flex

and have a question about forcing IRQ's.

Seems my Video card and my Firewire card are sharing an IRQ, number 16.

When I go into control panel the settings for the firewire card are greyed
out, Plug and Pray?

Firing up the Flex Firewire driver and running with DPC check enabled, I'm
pretty low, but getting a peak of 1724 us after about 5 minutes of run
time.

Normal is around 6 to low 100's on delay.

So question is, anyone know how to force the IRQ of my Firewire up to
something like IRQ 18. I have not triied the shutdown and move the card to
a

different slot, and Bios does not seem to offer any options to tweak.

Comments suggestions.

[Flexradio] Just received my Flex 5000A

2009-06-01 Thread N4PY2
I just received my F5K today. It arrived in fine shape and I have it all
setup. I noticed a couple of things that surprised me. One in particular
is I have a PC audio amp plugged into the pwr-spkr jack. This is working
fine for speaker audio. But, when I plug headphones into the headphone
jack, I expected the audio out the powered speaker jack to mute, but it does
not. Is there some setting for this or is that just the way it is.

The other thing that surprised me and is a little disappointing is how loud
the relay is when I key in CW. I find this a little distracting.

But overall, the radio is excellent. I find the QSK to be better than what
I expected. And I am only running a 2.2 ghz PC with 1 gig of memory and no
dual core.

One other question - In PowerSDR, how do you center the receive frequency in
the panadapter display? Mine stays quite a bit to the right side of center
no matter what I do. I am running 1.18.0.

Yes, it will have tone support in an upcoming version of the software.

D-Start is proprietary.

You should be able to interface a TNC to the radio. I suspect that you
can do it virtually too, but the AWG software will have to change to
support separate sound card instances for TX and RX.

Hu. Every 15 KHz. Those are not DDS spurs, but probably interference
coming from something else external of the radio. A DDS spur will
disappear when you change the DDS (change frequencies).

Subject: [Flexradio] How well doe the F5K handle SWR

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my F5K. It should be here on
Monday.

Can anyone tell me how well the F5K handles SWR. My antennas are mostly
better than 1.5 to 1 SWR except for 15 and 6 meters where the SWR creeps
up

to around 2.5. Does the F5K fold back power as the SWR goes up or what.
Most of my experience has been with tentec radios and they could handle
SWR's like this with no problem.

2009-05-25 Thread N4PY2
Where can I find the beta versions for PowerSDR? In particular I am looking
for version 1.18.1

I have searched on "Beta" and "1.18.1" with no luck.

[Flexradio] PTT and CW key on back of F5K

2009-05-24 Thread N4PY2
Does anyone know if you can use the PTT RCA jack on the back of the Flex
5000A as a CW straight key input?

Re: [Flexradio] Amplifier

2009-05-24 Thread N4PY2
Is anyone using an Acom 1000 with their Flex 5000A? I have a Flex 5000A on
order and I am getting things ready for it. I believe the Acom key in line
connected directly to either TX1, 2, or 3 will work fine. I'm just looking
for someone who has already done this.

I have more amps than sense

In current production I have an AL-80B and Acom 2000A, and I just sold a
AL-1500

In past production I have Amp Supply LK500C LK500NTC and LK800TNY and a
Alpha 78

My recommendation is the AL-80B Best bang for the buck in ham radio. Its
instant on and has very reproducible tuning so I can basically switch it
on set the band switch set the tune and load to a preset mark I have on
the panel and make a contact. If you need to change a tube its only one
tube you have to buy

If you really want to put out the snot and be a high powered bully then I
recommend the AL-1500 or something like the LK800TNY. If I was going to
have only one amp it would probably be the AL-1500. Big power supply and
the amp is very indestructible. I've had the same tube in the amp for 20
years. You do have to be disciplined however in tuning the thing and you
have to consider what kind of antenna and feedline you are going to use

If you want an amp that's not a lot of money but can put out a little more
than 1500W (meaning it has a little extra headroom) and is built like a
tank any of the Amp Supply stuff is great.

They all play great with the Flex stuff. The 80B and 1500 have solid
state switching and the rest have vac relays as you can guess I'm a CW op
