Re: [Flexradio] Garbled output

2014-07-20 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

Hi Dave,

Any chance you're using a HEIL mic adapter?

I had garbled audio from RF getting into the mic connector. As it turned out
the mic was wired as 'Yaesu', but required the chassis ground pin to be
connected to the mic ground pin on the adapter. I soldered a tiny jumper
between the two pins and the problem was completely eliminated. YMMV.

Re: [Flexradio] 4th decimal digit readout onpanadapter/waterfallreally necessary?

2013-04-19 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

While we on this subject I'm wondering if it's just me or has the frequency
shown along the top of the panadapter changed to add a ".0" e.g. 14.215.0

I didn't notice this before v2.6.4 and have looked for a way to turn off the
.0 but don't find anything.

I thought it read: 14.215 previously

Anyone else having a problem with CTCSS tones not working under 2.4.4 ?
Before I press the button, will resetting the database help correct this?
I'm no longer able to open any local repeaters since upgrading to 2.4.4.

[Flexradio] PSDR 2.3.5 Problem with VU5K

2012-06-04 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

Recently someone mentioned they were having problems with PSDR and the VU5K
module. Gerald replied asking for specific details of the problem.

I am a new owner of the VU5K module and hope to be able to make some
satellite contacts. I am using SatPC32 for doppler tuning and perhaps the
problem has something to do with the satellite program. I don't know if its
PSDR or SatPC32.

After attempting a satellite pass using the VU5K and returning to HF I
notice that VAC2 will no longer function. This can be 'cured' by doing a
database reset. A minor inconvenience, but perhaps something that needs to
be looked into.

I had posted a message to the reflector about this during Dayton and it got
lost in the shuffle

[Flexradio] VU5K With Dual Band Yagi

2012-05-13 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

Is anyone using a 5000/VU5K with a dualband yagi for satellite work with any
positive results?

I recently put up a Gulf Alpha EZ Sat Dualband Satellite Yagi and it the
performance has been very disappointing. The Flex RX downlink is completely
'overwhelmed' during TX on the uplink. The RX panadapter shows a flat line
and a 10-20db rise during uplink TX effectively making my downlink signal
unusable in trying to find my signal on the transponder.

Before I ditch this antenna, I'd like to hear from anyone using a dualband
antenna for satellite work, and any suggestions they might have.

[Flexradio] MON Button Grayed Out - Buglet?

2012-05-11 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

I recently had a VU5K module installed and now I notice that when switching

out and stays that way even when I switch back to HF. If I shutdown PSDR
then restart it, the MON button is usable again. v 2.3.5

Excuse me for having slept and forgot quite a bit.

Do I need to match all the sample rates to the selected bandwidth I chosen
on my Flex-3000?
So if I select 96k I need to match my VAC sample rate to 96K and my Windows
6 64 sound properties for my VAC inputs and output to 96K?
I have been running 48k forever and decided I wanted to zoom the panadapter
out more and would sacrifice some filter sharpness to do so.

[Flexradio] SatPC32 / DDUtil / Power SDR

2012-03-30 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

I thought I saw something on the list from a member who was using Sat32PC
through DDUtil to control his rotor and do doppler tuning in PowerSDR for
satellite work.

I am trying to get these programs working together and could use some advice
if available.

Subject: [Flexradio] Flex 5000 Audio Problem

I am hearing my mic audio and CW through the system speakers. It sounds as
if there's an echo on SSB. Here's my configuration:

Flex 5000A with PowerSDR 2.3.5 running VAC 4.11. Computer is a Shuttle
i7 running Windows 7 Ultimate. I have VAC 1 and 2 working in PowerSDR. I
have disabled both and have the same results.

Bose Companion 2 speakers are plugged directly in to the back of the Flex.
I
tried a different set of speakers and have the same problem. Even if I
turn the computer system sound all the way down, I have the problem.

If I look at the audio Volume Mixer in Windows I have one device,
speakers, which is set for (speakers, Realtek High Definition Audio). I
muted everything including the computer speakers and have the same problem.

In the mixer window, I can see all 8 of my virtual audio cables plus a
Realtek Digital Audio that are not selected. The applications that are
present under the volume mixer window are System sounds, CommCat spot
manager, Mozilla Firefox, and Flex Radio Systems PowerSDR.

I know it's not RF because I get the audio feedback even with the amp off
and power output set to zero. The only way to stop the feedback is to turn
the Companion 2 speakers all the way down, or unplug them.

What am I missing here?

I installed the new version, then transferred my previous settings using
SDR Data Transfer with the updated data -- and overwrote the 60M
bandstack data, with the result that only two (or was it three?) of the
clicks on the 60M button corresponded to the new channels. I saved a
copy of the database, reset to the default, then copied the 60M
bandstack data from the default file to the saved file. All is now well.

Perhaps Ray should include an "Are you sure your really want to do
that?" dialog in his program specifically for 60M.

I think I will like the new 2012 Default skin, and I'll even put up with
the FlexRadio logo on the panadapter screen.

Please note: The touchpad mouse is not working, but can most likely be fixed

It is used when the Flex provides the Kenwood compatible interface
on a serial port. As I said before:

 >Flex for external control using the TS-870 emulation.

If the Flex is configured to emulate Kenwood (see your documentation),
Station Master and microHAM Router can be configured as if it were
controlling a Kenwood transceiver (see the Station Master User Manual).

[Flexradio] Band Decoder For Power SDR

2011-11-13 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

I would like to have my Six Pack antenna switch connected to PowerSDR. I
understand I need a band decoder. Is anyone using a MicroHam Station Master
or Array Solutions Band Master with the Flex?

What is the recommended/proven way to accomplish this?

[Flexradio] Bandmaster II Decoder

2011-11-11 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

Is there anyone on the reflector using an Array Solutions Bandmaster II with
a Flex 5000 that can share some setup details? I have the documentation but
I'm not sure which configuration to use for the Flex. There are choices for
several radios ICOM, KENWOOD, YAESU etc. but nothing specific to the Flex.

Any tips would be most welcome!

Re: [Flexradio] Enhancement Requests

2011-11-03 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

Yeah, way back when I was a legacy radio user, I would constantly try to
submit my feature requests to the big three. Well, you know where that got
me...At least with Flex there is the possibility. I'm trying to guess how
many of the "640+" requests you refer to actually made any sense. Meanwhile
I'm enjoying all the enhancements that are already included in PSDR!

[Flexradio] Band Decoder w/5000A

2011-10-28 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR
I'm considering the purchase of a band decoder to use with my 5000a and my
Array Solutions Six-Pack antenna switch. I am interested in hearing from hams
that are using a similar setup. I'm particularly interested in how they are
connected to the Flex and if the decoder needs to be connected directly to the
Flex or through DDUtil.

All advice, opinions, and recommendations would be most welcome!

That's interesting.
My PSDR always starts up where it left off, the settings do not change as the

I also always shutdown the software before the hardware. (and vice versa)

Folks, I noticed after upgrading to V.2.2.3 about a month or so ago, that
the band and frequency changes from the previous operating session. When I
fire up the next time, the rig is on a different band and freq...As an
example, I'm on 14.300 MHz and then shut down PowerSDR and turn off the
  rig.
The next day the band and freq is somewhere else (ie:40 meters). I believe
  this behavior is pretty consistent.

Any ideas? Would resetting to factory defaults fix the anomaly?

  Jim,
The symtoms you describe are consistant with lack of communications
  on SDR-1000 control cable..
This could be the radio not turned on. Or the control cable not
connected ( or missing wires in the parallel cable ) or not configured
correctly ( in correct LPT address). Or If you have the Flex USB to
parallel cable, the Driver could be missing or not installed correctly,
or the Flex USB to Parallel cable could be defective. An non-Flex USB
to Parallel converter is not likely to work ever.

Re: [Flexradio] PSDR Doesn't Fit on Screen (Now Fixed)

Believe it or not PSDR stopped responding once, and after restarting

Guys,

I've been reading these "screen size" complaints on the reflector for
several years now and have never understood what the problem was. If I
want the console display bigger I just "mouse-pull" it to size and move it
slightly, if required. This works with displays from 14 to 32 inch anyway.
And I've been doing this without trouble ever since I first received the
5000A. And my experience with the 3000 and it's little 14 inch screen has
been the same. If I change software versions I do have to "drag and pull"
again but never any trouble. But my curiosity keeps increasing. I guess
I would appreciate some insight into what it is that bothers people. On the
screen sitting on top of my "emmcom" package you see that the "height" does
not completely fill the screen---but all I have to do is "drag it taller."

The problem is when the physical screen has a height or width less than the
minimum to display all of the PSDR screen. Then when you want to use the
buttons at the bottom of the PSDR screen, the buttons at the top are off the
screen. When you move the PSDR window so you can see the buttons at the top,
the buttons at the bottom disappear off the bottom. It is annoying. It would
have been -*MUCH*- better if PSDR had been made up of multiple, smaller
windows that you could move around or overlay as you see fit. I only use
about 1/2 the controls so I would much rather be able to put them up-front
and cover the ones I never use.

Guys,

The problem is that the only settings I get for the screen size
with my Acer D255 Netbook is 1024 x 600 and 800 x 600.

It will not do any other resolution (well none are offered ) The Native Mode
for these 10.1" Acer screens is 1024 x 600. You can't drag the programme
screen to fit, as the screen just isn't big enough to accommodate the entire
picture in one go, and it wont scroll up or down either (This is Windows not
Linux!!).

However, some ferreting around and I came up with this:

1.There is a utility called "a1ctl" utility I do not know where this
comes from or where it is available. However, it does NOT work on Windows 7,
although it may be of some use to anyone running XP.

2.I did come up with this off a techie forum for Windows 7.

Ok, anyone with an Acer Aspire one on Win 7 can forget about screen res
settings and a1ctl programs, they won't fix the problem.
However there is a way, if your comfortable editing your register..
Go to Run command, type regedit and enter.
Once in here don't mess around.
Select
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{FEE9B7B8-B684-444
A-BB90-505CAF0F90E4}
Now in sub folder select entry display1 downscaling support and set it
to 1 instead of 0.
Save your settings and exit.
Now go to your display adapters setting and you will be able to set screen
res to what you want.#

Now, I tried to find this setting and could not (lost it after the \Video).
So I did a search in the Registry for "Downscaling" and found an entry in
the same tree branch as above.

I carefully noted where it was so I could revert if need be. I changed it
from a 0 (zero) to a 1 as suggested.

Low and behold, I can now set my screen to 1024 x 768 which supports PSDR.
Yippee!!! Job Done.

The only downside I can see is the pictures are a bit stretched, as its low
ceiling screen displaying a taller screen.

Still it Works and seems to work well.

The problem is the Aspire One series of Netbooks have limited controls,
coupled with the fixed size of PSDR, it caused the problem of not being able
to see the buttons at the bottom of the screen.

I hope this snippet of information will be of help to others with Limited
screen sizes.

I thought I was going to have to trade in a new netbook for another just
because I could not run PSDR.

Best Regards

Geoff

[Flexradio] PSDR Doesn't Fit on Screen

2011-04-06 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

I just acquired a mini PC with a 10" screen and when I run Power SDR part of
the PSDR window is not shown on the screen. I looked in the KB and found the
article, but it relates to an older O/S.

I am using Windows 7 32bit with a screen resolution of 1280 X 1024 and the
display fonts set to "Smaller".

Is there anything else I can adjust to get the entire PSDR to show on the
screen? I'd like to keep the small monitor if possible.

[Flexradio] WPX Contest

2011-04-05 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

In the recent WPX Contest I decided to try a different approach than I used
the last time. I switched the Panadapter to 2x zoom level and went up and
down the bands looking for the weakest signals I could find. They were easy
to see at 50fps. It is truly amazing what the 5000 can hear! These were all
stations that were down at the noise level, many with strong adjacent QRM. I
was able to eliminate strong nearby stations easily by grabbing the edge of
the passband and dragging with the mouse - bye bye QRM.

Talk about tuning in excitement...

I worked 145 of these weak signals worldwide!

Subject: [Flexradio] [Commercial] New member in the Abroham Neal family!

Hi all

This is a commercial announcement so please delete it if you are not
interested (and sri about using your bandwidth)!

I am happy to announce the new member in the SDR systems that Abroham Neal
Software sells and it is truly the best one I have ever seen. You can see
the Passmark, DPCLat and Windows Experience Index scores in this screenshot
http://www.abrohamnealsoftware.com/MyLittleFriend.PNG

The DPClat score shows 0us and while thats amazingg, I do want to confess I
have seen it spike as high as 212us when I was running the Passmark System
Benchmark test, but otherwise it appears that 17us is the previously high
spike I have witnessed before that.

The system shown in the benchmark results is a bit different that the new
Premium system in 3 ways: 1., its using an Intel i7-920 processor while the
new Premium System is using an Intel i7-950; 2. it is using the new OCZ
Revo 120GB PCIe solid state drive which bypasses SATA interfaces and talks
directly over the PCIe bus; and, 3 it has an AMD HD5770 card as opposed to
the higher rated HD6850 card in the premium system. I will be offering Revo
SSD as an upgrade on the new Premium System (+$100) when I feel comfortable
its completely reliable.

The new Premium computer consists of:
- Intel i7-950 CPU
- Asrock x58 Extreme 3 motherboard
- 12GB of triple channel DDR3 1600 memory
- 120GB Sata II solid state drive
- 1TB Sata III hard disk drive
- Blu-ray/DVD/CD burner/reader
- AMD HD 6850 graphics controller
- Ultra-quiet Antec Sonata Elite case
- Granite Digital Fire-VUE premium cable.

This seriously is as close to 0 microsecond latency as I have seen.

Its another example that Asrock motherboards appear the best engineered
boards for very low latency windows system. They are now the supplier of all
3 desktop models I sell.

I also have a couple of used laptops, in case you are in the market. I have
a 6 month old version of the premium laptop I sell, with the same warranty
as the new model. I have a Core 2 Duo laptop that is less perfect for SDR
work (but acceptable) and great for regular usage. Both are 17" screens and
show some wear and tear. If interested, let me know.

Thanks as always for your tolerance of these notes as well as the support
you have given me!

the logging program (without HRD) successfully with a Flex-5000 and a

sometimes use
DM780 with my IC-7700, but I am now almost a 100% Flex convert (the

Paul,
Don, KD6HQ is correct that delay problems have been documented between HRD
(actually DM780 which is one of several modules) and PSDR; you can search
for
these discussions and the reconciliations in order to get these two
packages
correctly (v little delay) communicating. I wouldn't ditch HRD just
because you

weren't initially successful - many of us (W5XZ, K0KC, etc.) have gone
through
the same growing pains. HRD&DM780 are, IMHO, an excellent combination and
I've
successfully used them in both RTTY and PSK, for DX'ing and contesting,
If you

still need assistance, please contact me off-line. 73, Rich K3VAT

Paul

This problem has been discussed before so if you do a "search" you should
find

some more information.

I do use HDR in a manor of speaking. Actually what I use is DM-780 and
the Log

Book and PowerSDR

to control the Flex.

In order for the log book to use the "Auto" logging functions you must
connect

DM-780 to the log book.
This is normally done thru the main HDR program. An alternative is to use
a

program called Mini-Deluxe.
Mini-Deluxe allows DM-780 and Log Book to talk to each other without the
need to

load HDR.

See: http://www.vhfwiki.com/minideluxe

For me this virtually elimated the delay. I don't even open up HDR, I
just open

Mini Deluxe and then DM-780 and the log book.

Good luck

Don

I came across a programme that is a Virtual Serial Port Emulator.

In it, is the ability to create a com port splitter which enables up to 8
programmes to run off one singal virtual com port.

It works a treat as I tried it with HRD, DM780, N1MM, CWskimmer all
running

at once and all having rig control.

Its downside is the fact that is what the name suggests, an emulator and
therefore having to start it every time the computer starts and then open
the saved file.

What I would like to know, is there a programme out there that the does
the

same but you don't have to start it every time you start the computer, in
otherwords like VSP,com0com with built in splitter facilty?

Thanks

Laurie

I am posting this here because many Flexers have experience with external
sound interfaces – due to the early Flex radio. So here is a description of
my current sources of audio:

Flex-3000 – HF radio

Icom 2200H – 2M radio

Yeasu FT-60 – 2/440 radio

RS Pro 97 – scanner

All except the computer are mono audio sources.

The goal is to make the computer an audio hub thus allowing me the ability
to control the volume of each audio source through one set of speakers
attached to the computer. I was looking at the Delta 44 or the Delta 1010LT
interface. I would like to get some feedback on this approach, would it have
an impact on the Flex-3000 since this computer also runs PSDR.

Re: [Flexradio] PSDR & MMSSTV

2010-01-04 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

Try this from Bret:

Yep, you want to use VAC (registered version) and there is a file you have
to add to the MMSSTV directory called "sc_select.mmw" that lets you select
the VAC sound card devices and you need to run the Virtual serial port
program my recommendation is VSP Manager by K5FR for the PTT serial port.
If you already have other software control programs running then the only
thing you should need is the "sc_select.mmw" file.
73's and if you need more help let me know or can't find the sc_select file
I can send it to you.

Subject: [Flexradio] PSDR & MMSSTV

Is anyone using MMSSTV
with PowerSDR? I
have it working but I have to switch to Device ID 2 to
transmit (within MMSSTV: Option -> Setup MMSSTV -> Misc -> Device ID).
After tx I have to switch back to ID 1 for rx.

The Device IDs number -1 to 3. -1 and 0 can receive without VAC. 1 can
receive with VAC. Only 2 can transmit but it does not receive. 3 results
in "Cannot open Sound Card 3".

The problem, in a nutshell, is the need to always go through the menu to
switch back and forth. Is there a way around this in MMSSTV?

Thanks

Re: [Flexradio] what is cpdr do ?

2010-01-04 Thread Paul Delaney - K6HR

A simple Knowledge Center search on the word "compander" reveals this:

Transmit Compander
PowerSDR uses audio compression to make quite sounds louder-the difference,
in decibels, between the loudest and the quietest portion of the audio
input, i.e., its dynamic range. There's a down side also, it can make
unwanted sounds, like breath sounds, also louder. More is not necessarily
better. A good starting point is 3 db. Rarely will one need to increase
compression above 10 db. If you're a soft spoken person, consider operating
with the Compander on all the time. Companding is also very effective on
AM. The choice of microphone will play heavily in the compressor settings.

The compander is used to overcome limited dynamic range in one portion of an
audio system. In amateur radio applications this is typically the high
frequency response. The compander is both a compressor and a high frequency
expander. An ideal setting for the compander is level 3.

There is a DX version of the Compander which has a higher compression ratio
for more "punch", such as trying to bust a DX pileup.

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexEdge] crackly audio

I observe the same here. I only experience the crackly audio after a DPC
spike and sometimes the crackly audio is accompanied by a 'bouncing'
panadapter display. Toggling PSDR start button cures the problem here.

It only happens when using Skimmer, never just with PSDR.

Mine is an older far less powerful machine, and I get the crackling from

I'm not using CW Skimmer.

I'll say it has improved!

The new Firewire driver allows me to run in "Normal Mode" and it is very

This is a new Firewire driver and it is 100% compatible with PowerSDR
v1.18.3 and the latest firmware. There are some stability and performance
improvements in the new Firewire driver along with a utility to check out
the Firewire card to see if it is 100% compatible with the FLEX Firewire
driver.

MMSSTV, option, setup MMSSTV, MISC setup tab, set the "clock" rate too
12000.00 Hz it will save you a bunch of time trying to get it right.

Have you tried a clamp on ferrite (or choke) just right at the USB
port? Be sure to run the cable through the choke several times, this
will increase the efficiency with each turn through.
