2016-01-16 Thread Sheldon Hartling
I've generally had good luck using Apple products with my Flex 3000 and Flex
5000. However, not all macs will make good Flex computers. You can run into
the same bad-driver DPV issues you do with some PCs. Two macs that I've had
trouble with were:

 - iMac 27 (Late 2009) running Windows 7; and
 - Mac Mini (Mid 2010) running Windows 7.

At least with a new mac you'll have 14 days to return it if it doesn't work.

Runs really smoothly, most of my Mac's run at less than 7 % CPU with

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 3000 for DX'ing and SDR

2013-09-16 Thread Sheldon Hartling
Hi Craig

I have a Flex-5000, Flex-3000 and KPA500/KAT500 and recently added a KX3.

I have to agree with Matthew (KJ4TN) that both the F3K and KX3 are fine
radios and in "real world" situations its hard to see any receive difference
despite the KX3's better lab performance.

As for softwareŠ I run PowerSDR on Windows7 bootcamp on my iMac for both
the F3K and the KX3. For the KX3, I use PowerSDR version 2.5.3 (the last
version to support the Flex-1000) along with the sdr1kusb.dll library from
Christos Nickolaou (SV1EIA) to provide bi-directional control. It's hard to
tell which radio you're using from the PowerSDR screen. The panadaptor
display and receive controls look and work the same. Connecting the KX3 I/Q
analog output to the built-in iMac stereo input I get 96Khz on the display.
I think with a decent USB external sound card I should be able to get
192Khz.

With the KX3, PowerSDR is used only for receive. You still use the KX3
directly for transmit. The KX3 VFO and band control buttons work directly
with PowerSDR and any PowerSDR also controls the KX3 directly. There are
two connections between the KX3 and the PC/iMAC: a USB or serial plug
connected to the KX3 ACC1 for CAT control, and an audio cable between the
KX3 RX I/O jack and the PC stereo input.

The KX3 has become my new portable rig and I plan on selling the Flex-3000.
I love the Flex-5000 and will keep it as my main radio.

As others have said, your decision depends on what you want to do with it:
 -  If you need 100 watts the F3K is the clear choice;
 - If you want a remarkably small self contained QRP radio (10 to 12 watt),
consider the KX3.
 - remember the F3K requires a FireWire connection and the MacBook Air
doesn't have one. There is a Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor but I haven't
tried it with Boot Camp my MacBook Air. Not sure if that's an option.

Using the KX3 with my KPA500/KAT500 amplifier I get about 200 watts.
Eventually I'll probably spring for a KXPA100 for the car.

73 and good luck with your decision,

Craig, I've had mixed luck with Macs Š

* 13" Black MacBook, early 2008 (Win7-32bit)  works great!  It's currently
the backup PC for my Flex-3000;

* 21" iMac, mid 2011 (Win732bit) - also works great! I use this with my
Flex-3000.  Never had issues;

* 27" iMac, late 2009 (Win7-32bit) - suffered from periodic DPC spikes that
I could not isolate.  I sold it and bought the 21" iMac;

* MacMini, mid 2010 significant issues with high DPC caused by nVidia
video drivers. It worked well with the native Window's video driver but I
found the driver wanting and stopped using it. Problems with video
resolutions and dual monitors.

How about experience using an older iMac desktop computer? My wife needs a

Lastly, the current Mac Mini model still has a FireWire 800 port. Does

Re: [Flexradio] Touch-Screen All-in-One computer (late-2009 iMac)

2012-06-14 Thread Sheldon Hartling
Hi Robert

I'd be happy to answer.

I have two Flex radios, a Flex-5000 and a Flex-3000. The Flex-5000 is my
main radio and remains in the shack. It's connected to a midrange HP
desktop computer with two 24" screens. I run PSDR maximized on one 24"
screen and everything else (logging, etc.) on the other. The Flex-3000 is
my "portable" radio. Originally I ran it with a Thinkpad T60p but I found
it aways ran hot and sometimes caused the processor to overheat and freeze
up. I switched to a spare 13" black macBook a year ago and it works great!
Pretty much a vanilla install of Windows7 with no tweaking and no PCMCIA
Firewire card.

There is no OS sitting on another and no emulators to glue it together. You
install and run Windows natively on the hardware and "BootCamp" provides the
needed native Windows drivers and a mechanism to switch back and forth
between OSX and Windows by rebooting.

I find with the Flex-3000, I really like to run on a big screen. So I'm
always taking the F3K, the 13" MacBook and a 24" Dell monitor. I figured it
would be simpler to run it all on a 24" all-in-one. I wasn't able to find a
PC all-in-one with a firewire port and good real-time response. I went back
to the Sony store and ran LatencyMon on the 24" i7 Vaio I was considering
and it did not fare well. There aren't many All-in-1 computers any more
with firewire capabilities. I was looking for a 24" monitor but picked up a
used iMac 27" for a good price.

I have 6 Apple computers now and couldn't be happier with the hardware. I
switched to Mac for business last March after carrying both a MacBook and a
Thinkpad for the previous 3 years. Apple makes great hardware no matter
what operating system you run on it. I run OSX, Windows 7 and RedHat Linux
on mine.

Let me understand something. With the inexpensive hardware that is available
that will run PSDR, why do people try to bend their APPLE products into
running real-time audio processing applications. Why not just buy a
dedicated $300 PC for the Flex and be done with it?

I am perplexed at all of the tweaking that is done on the Apples to run
PSDR. One OS sitting on top of another and an emulator to glue it all
together. Nothing native. Why go through all of that hassle?

Just curious.

I've made a little progress and the iMac 27 is working better. Here's what
I've done

* Turned off thes features in Windows 7 control panel Programs & Features:
Tablet PC components; Windows Gadget Platform; XPS Services; XPS Viewer;
* Installed GBoost (www.gzero.com) and run it before PSDR;
* Switched to Legacy Firewire driver;
* Stopped "AppleOSSMgr.exe" process (not sure if this will make a
difference, but its been attributed to DPC spikes on some support websites);
* Reduced the size of the PowerSDR main window.

This last one is interesting. If I resize PSDR to take about 3/4 of the 27"
screen it seems to run normally. Once it reaches that size, if I make it
any bigger the CPU% display stops updating and the FlexControl works
erratically. Is this a known issue? As soon as I shrink it back down the
Flex-Control catches up.

The DPC Latency is running in the 60uSec to 140uSec range with bumps to ~500
every half hour or so. I left it running PSDR and DPC Latency Checker
overnight last night but the display was messed up this morning and the
latency checked showed a max of 4000. So there's still something causing
occasional spikes. The longest delays normally measured with Latency Mon
are in NDIS and the Nvidia network controller. I tried bumping the nVidia
NIC driver back a version but it didn't seem to make any difference.

Any advice appreciated! Especially from those who are successfully running
PSDR on an iMac.

My older 13" black MacBook runs PSDR FB but this new one doesn't seen up to
the task.

I¹d like to purchase a Touch-Screen All-in-One computer to use with my

There aren't many with Firewire interfaces anymore. It looks like the Sony
Vaio might be the best bet. However they use nVidia graphics processors and
this often leads to DPC latency problems. I've run DPC Latency Checker on a
number of Sony All-in-One's in the stores and they don't fair well (avg
1000+ with 3000+ peaks). The one exception, so far, is a model VPCL237FDB
which runs under 250 microsecond latency. (VPCL237FDB might be a Canadian
part number). It has a 2.2Ghz i7-2670QM processor and GT-540M nVidia GPU.
Anyone have experience with this PC?

There should only be two command lines.

To fix the word-wrap in the original post:
The first command starts with "rename" and there is a space between
"Default" and "2012"
The second command starts with "copy" and there is a space between "Default"
and "2012" and between "FlexRadio" and "Systems".

You can move the Flex Radio logo from the top-right corner of the display to
the bottom-right corner by opening a command window and entering these two
commands:

rename "%appdata%\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR\Skins\Default
2012\Console\picDisplay.png" "WAS_picDisplay.png"
copy "%appdata%\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR\Skins\Default
2011\Console\picDisplay.png" "%appdata%\FlexRadio

This will "remove" the logo from a dual display like the panafall.

WOW - 15 more copies were downloaded this morning since I asked about it
here.

Anybody installed it yet? I did but after checking to see how it turned
out I see I only got my standard two cables. Maybe I did something wrong.

I am in the middle of the BARTG RTTY contest now so will wait until
later to find my problem.

I had a gradually increasing latency delay with VAC 4.09 which was a
nuisance in lengthy contest running - had to periodically turn VAC
off/on to fix it (didn't always work). After running an hour I haven't
noticed the problem yet, so maybe that is gone (fingers crossed).

Re: [Flexradio] Anyone using MacBook with PC dualboot?

2012-03-07 Thread Sheldon Hartling
Hi Mike

I use a black 13" MacBook (early 2008) with my Flex-3000. It works great!
Much better than the Thinkpad T60p it replaced. The T60p always ran hot and
I had to use a laptop cooler.

I agree with Brian. If you can, try to pick a MacBook with a Radeon video
controller and not nVidia. There are latency issues with the nVidia drivers
that cause DPC problems. I tried to use a 2010 Mac Mini but found the DPC
latency ran 2000 microseconds with occasional spikes. If I disabled the
nVidia 320M GPU driver it dropped to 145 microseconds but I found the
default Windows VGA driver to be limiting.

Is this a viable option given that most Windows laptops don't support

And if you believe differently I'd like to know which ones. Currently using

Re: [Flexradio] VSPE and VSPMgr

2011-09-29 Thread Sheldon Hartling
Hi Laurie

You are right. This configuration is the one I use in my shack to support
the F5K and F3K on 3 computers with HRD logging. I can easily connect
anything to anything and the 30 series and 50 series port numbers help me
keep the 3000/5000 connections straight. I really like being able to easily
switch the single copy of HRD between radios.

For Field Day I ran N1MM on a Thinkpad T60p using a SEC COM port 1 client
which was connected to the SEC COM port 30 server on my 13" black MacBook
which was running PSDR. There are no restrictions on the port numbers you
can create with SEC other than they can not conflict with existing real or
virtual ports.

Hi Steve

Have a look at Serial to Ethernet Connector (SEC) from Eltima Software
(http://www.eltima.com).

For Field Day this year I wanted to set up N1MM logging on a separate
computer to eliminate the keyboard-focus problems that arise when two people
try to use one PC. This year one person operated the PSDR/F3K on a MacBook
while a another person logged on N1MM on a Thinkpad T60p. The connection
between the computers was made using COM ports over TCP/IP.

Before Field Day I evaluated 3 serial over TCP/IP solutions: KernelPro
Advanced Virtual Com Port, Eltima SEC and EtherLogic VSPe. In the test
environment I ran (HRD, N1MM and BobMeters) on one PC and (PSDR and a second
copy of BobMeters) on a second PC. The clear winner was Eltima's SEC
product. Eltima Software provides the virtual serial port technology that
Steve Nance uses in his VSPMgr product. With SEC used to connect the two
computers I could sweep the VFO on HRD on one PC and have everything track
it with no visible lag even with two copies of BobMeters running!

Now, in my shack, I use SEC as the backbone to connect everything. In
addition to serial over TCP/IP it provides complete splitter functionality.
I run one copy on the laptop connected to my F3K using ports 30, 31, 32, 33
and 34 and one copy on the desktop computer connected to my F5K using ports
50, 51, 52, 53 and 54. Ports 30 and 50 are the server ports and the rest
are client ports. On any computer in the shack, if I want to connect to the
F3K's COM port I pick a COM port in the 30 series (31, 32, Š); If I want to
connect to the F5K's COM port I pick a COM port in the 50 series (51, 52,
Š). Normally on my desktop I run HRD connected to COM port 51 and BobMeters
connected to COM port 54 and PSDR connected to COM port 50. No splitter
required. If I want to make a few contacts on my F3K running on a different
computer I just change the connection on HRD (still running on my desktop)
to port 31 and now its connected to the F3K. By default each SEC server
has 4 client ports but you can set up as many as you want.

SEC is licensed software and is sold by Eltima Software in 2-license packs.

Someone told me once that the only stupid question was the one you didn't
ask. Hopefully that's true so that this isn't a stupid question.

Has anyone used VSPE (64bit registered version) and VSPMgr together on the
same machine? VSPE allows for a splitter. If I set the source to PowerSDR,
one of the client ports to DDUtil, and then another port directly to my
client app, should that work? My reason is that I have a couple of apps
that don't want to play nice with DDUtil. I have port pairs that were set
up with VSPMgr and are are working fine with DDUtil. I would rather just
use those for the apps that work well.

Or, do I have to choose between VSPMgr and VSPE?

Thanks for your help!

Re: [Flexradio] VSPE and VSPMgr

2011-09-29 Thread Sheldon Hartling
Thanks Mike!

It really is sweet. Once it's set up it's really easy to use. There is
only one component running on each machine and the ports are there on each
reboot without the need to run anything to create them. SEC client COM
ports can be configured to connect to any SEC server COM port, even if its
on the same machine. And each SEC server is an automatic splitter so you
can connect multiple virtual COM ports spread across several machines all to
the same COM server port.

I'm been thinking this might be another way to remotely control my Flex (or
any transceiver with a CAT port) using HRD on slower Internet connections
when a full remote session might be a problem.

Re: [Flexradio] VSPE and VSPMgr

2011-09-29 Thread Sheldon Hartling

Subject: [Flexradio] VSPE and VSPMgr

Re: [Flexradio] Yikes, I'm transmitting

2011-09-29 Thread Sheldon Hartling
Thanks Bill, Tim and Gary

I'm going to try leaving the F5K on when I'm not around with the drive set
to 0% and a minimal configuration to see if I can isolate a non-hardware
cause. If I get another PTT-lockup I'll try sending a CAT command (ZZRX or
RX) from the setup test menu to see if that will release the PTT.

Gary, your 'dead man' relay sounds like a great option for remote operation.
I've used DDutil for this in the past but it it still susceptible to
software induced issues. I'll have a look at
http://www.controlbyweb.com/webswitch/. Did you use WebSwitch() Plus with
BASIC scripts to implement your 'dead man'?

I have been running my Flex-5000A for 3 years and have never experienced
this problem. For 2 of those years I operated remote from all around the
country. My 5000A was left powered up as I travelled weekly. Never once did
it transmit on its own. The fact that this has happened to you even with
older versions of PSDR, is pointing to something in your local environment.
I would start troubleshooting this problem by running the 5000A in a simple
environment with as little external connections, and software, as possible.
If it runs OK, add stuff back into the mix until the problem shows up. Of
course you could have a hardware problem in the 5000A itself. In that case,
the problem will happen even with a simple configuration. Best of luck with
your problem. Let us know what you find.

Actually, if TX was initiated by a CAT command (ZZTX or TX), it would
respond to a ZZRX or RX command.

FWIW, to protect my 3000 remote station I use a 'dead man'
delay-on-operate relay which is triggered by the TX relay in the Flex
(linear amp key). If the TX relay is closed for more than 5 minutes,
the time delay relay pulls in and shuts the power off to the radio for
10 seconds, assuring QRT.

This is done using a remote control outlet device:
http://www.controlbyweb.com/webswitch/
Also use this to remotely power cycle the PSDR pc as well as the radio.
So even if the pc hangs up, I still have control of the radio for the
sake of compliance.

On 3 occasions I've returned to my shack to find my Flex-5000A transmitting
with no one at the controls! Luckily it was SSB and with no modulation the
signal was negligible. In each case, I stopped PowerSDR and shut down the
F5K and everything started back up normally.

The most recent occurrence was this weekend. Before stopping PSDR I tried
everything I could think of to release the PTT. I shut down the only other
running program, HRD; unplugged the PTT hand switch; clicked the MOX button.
However, the transceiver seemed locked on transmit.

Previously this occurred on older versions of PSDR. The most recent
occurrence was PSDR version 2.2.3. Flex-5000A, Windows 7 64 bit. The only
other programs running were: HRD+logbook and Internet Explorer. PTT COM
port is not enabled.

Thanks for any insight or suggestions. For now, the F5K will be powered off
when I'm not around. This throws a damper on remote operations.

seems unlikely :-)

I can confirm the VOX is/was off.

One possible explanation is that your house was, at one time, owned by a
radio amateur who went SK. Imagine a guy from the 1930s who only operated a
transmitter using high voltage coils and De Forest valves coming across a
Flex 5000 during one of his haunting episodes. :)

Or, closer to reality, is there any chance the VOX is active? Maybe a fan
or something is tripping it and there is just enough ambient sound to keep
it open.

Thanks, Harry

I've run DDutil in the past with a 4 minute timer. I didn't have it
running on the weekend when the PTT locked up though. But, as you say, it
probably wouldn't have made a difference. I doubt PSDR would respond to a
CAT command to stop transmitting. Nothing else I tried seemed to be able to
release the PTT.

If no one else has experienced this issue I wonder if its a hardware
problem. If so, it seems to be easily "fixed" by a restart.

Would be nice for PowerSDR to include a timer that would prevent

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 1500 (2010 Mac Mini latency issues): Not for me ...

2011-05-30 Thread Sheldon Hartling
Hi Frank

By all reports the older Mac Mini's make great Flex-Radio PCs!

My Snow Leopard Server is one of the "new" Mac Mini's purchased this year.
It has a 2.66 Ghz Core Duo processor, 4GB 1067Mhz memory and twin 500GB 7200
RPM disk drives. Its a sweet machine!! Bootcamp is not officially
supported on the OSX Server variants so it takes a little more work to
install Windows 7.

The current Mac Mini uses an nVidia 320M GPU that works great under OSX but
has serious latency problems under Windows 7. The problem is in the
nVidia/Apple drivers for the GPU. Try googling "320M DPC latency" and you
should find lots of reports, mostly from professional audio users.

me ...

Hi all -

my Mac Mini running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit is a perfect Flex-Radio PC.
Installed Windows 7 manually (not by running Bootcamp before) and then also
manually installed the NVIDIA drivers (the Mac mini has a GeForce 9400 GPU):

NVIDIA driver version 8.17.12.6099, date: 2010-10-16

With this combo I get a max latency of 558 µs and can operate in Normal
Mode. I am operate my Flex-5000A without any issues for hours.

Can't duplicate the issues described by Sheldon - fortunately ;-)

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 1500 (2010 Mac Mini latency issues)

2011-05-29 Thread Sheldon Hartling
Hi Michael

There are some latency issues with the Windows nVidia 320M video driver for
the 2010 Mac Mini that make it unsuitable for use as a Flex computer at the
moment. This is likely the case for MacBook Pros that use the 320m and 330m
GPUs as well.

As James (KK6MC) mentioned, the trick to using a Mac computer with your Flex
radio is to install Windows XP or Windows 7 with Bootcamp. It will not work
correctly in a virtual environment using Fusion or Parallels.

I've just been through the process of trying to turn my Snow Leopard Server
(a 2010 Mac Mini) into a portable PC for my Flex-3000. The effort was
unsuccessful.

I found the DPC Latency on Windows 7 professional 32-bit ran a pretty
consistent 2000 microseconds with occasional spikes higher. After a day of
tuning and research I found the culprit was the Bootcamp driver for the
nVidia 320M GPU. With this driver disabled the DPC latency drops to a
respectable 145 microseconds. However the default Windows VGA driver is
really limited.

I tried the latest 320M drivers from the nVidia site but they weren't any
better.

I have a 13" black MacBook that I'm using instead and it seems to be an
outstanding Flex PC! Until Apple/nVidia releases a driver for the 320m GPU
that corrects the latency issue it looks like the Mac Mini is a non starter.
Unfortunately!

I am totally new to the Flex, having seen it at one hamfest. I am not
a computer guy, though I am pretty competence as a ham (built a lot of
stuff, never owned a commercial antenna, etc.). I recently switched
here from Windows and PCs to Mac (I'm a writer), and really would
prefer a mac platform if cost possible. That said, money, as usual, is
an issue.

I am considering a 1500 for the primary station and I am looking for
some help with making this as painfree as possible. From all I've
read, it appears most of the issues seem to be related to
compatibility and speed, so I am looking for suggestions to try and
get things right the first time around.

I'm considering a mac mini as the computer half of the system. Small,
and with the 1500, it would make a really compact station. Again, not
a computer guy so if someone is using a setup that is working well and
was reasonably priced, I'd sure like to talk - mac or PC if a PC setup
worked for you easily.

If you'll contact me off list, I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks.

Re: [Flexradio] laptops that do work with PSDR

2010-12-14 Thread Sheldon Hartling (ve1gpy)
T60 MEMORY UPGRADES

I recently looked at updating the memory in some T60s I purchased for our
local club. Here are the details.

The T60 can take two PC2-5300(*) 667 MHz SO DIMM memory modules. The
modules come in 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB sizes and in two speeds: 533 MHz
and 667 MHz. You can mix and match them but the pair will always run at the
lowest speed installed.

The memory modules are located under the palm rest and are reasonably easy
to replace. The hardware is capable of recognizing 4GB of memory. If you're
running a 32-bit operating system, as most of these will be, only 3.25GB of
the memory can be utilized when 2GB + 2GB are installed due to addressing
limitations.

If your T60 has two 512MB modules installed here are your options:

1. Purchase two 1GB modules and replace existing module. (2.0GB total)

2. Purchase a 2GB module and use with one of the existing 512MB modules.
(2.5GB total)

3. Purchase a 2GB module and a 1GB module. (3.0GB total)

4. Purchase two 2GB modules. (3.25GB total)

Try www.newegg.com/www.newegg.ca and type "PC2-5300" as a search term.

(*) You can also use modules labeled "PC2-4200". These are slower modules
that will run at 533Mhz.

If your transmitter is knocking down your Internet link, then you and a
bigger problem with RFI.. If you are talking about TX timeout, Steve,
K5FR has that solved with DDUtil already. It has a Watchdog timer built in

Good question Gary. I've been wondering the same thing myself. Here's the
scenario...

You check into the net, patently wait your turn, press the MOX button, start
transmitting and ...
The hotel internet connection goes down.

It seems like you'd need a watch-dog program to unkey the transmitter if the
remote session was lost.

I had trouble getting N1MM to track PowerSDR consistently during field day
until I moved it to RCP1 in DDutil. Initially I had it configured as RCP3
along with HRD/DM780 (RCP1) and BobSMeter (RCP2). When I changed the order
and moved it from RCP3 to RCP1 all was well. We used it throughout the

Subject: [Flexradio] IARU and Flex 5000, a few small issues but great fun

Just wanted to write a short note and say how much I enjoyed using my 5k
during the IARU contest this weekend. I had a minor issue with getting
PowerSDR and N1MM talking to each other consistently while using DDutil
so I just finally went Power SDR direct to N1MM.
The focus issue that others discussed when using the radio during
Field day also came up a couple of times but that's just something you
have to get used too. You just have to make darn sure which window you
have the cursor in before you click.
I also had early reports of bad audio but that was because I had never
gotten around to re running my station ground to the rig. As soon as I
did that, the problem disappeared and it was smooth sailing. I'm know
this isn't the Flexedge reflector but I will mention that I was using
the 2.0 beta. The above issues really have nothing to do with PowerSDR
bugs so I have to say that it was flawless in it's operation as far as I
could tell.
I'm not a serious contester, I do it for kicks and to help chase
awards but this is really the first time since I've had the radio that
I've operated for an extensive period and I enjoyed using the radio and
panadapter immensely.

Re: [Flexradio] Laptop Firewire Card for Flex 5000A

2010-07-07 Thread Sheldon Hartling (ve1gpy)
Hi Ray

I can recommend the SIIG NN-PCM222-S4 dual-port FireWire CardBus card. It
works great in my Thinkpad T60p.

I can't say the same for the two cards I tried before it. I had no luck
with the Dynex or SIIG 3-port CardBus cards.

I'm running a 5000 on a newly installed Windows7, 64 bit. I have VAC
installed and it appears to be working properly and I am using VSP Manager.
I've followed the setup instructions from the Flex 5000 manual (at least I
think I have). So far I have been unable to get HRD to connect to the 5000.
Since I just installed VSP Manager, I'm wondering if anyone else has been
able to connect HRD to the 5000 when using VSP Manager in Windows 7. Am I
missing something obvious?

Re: [Flexradio] How to configure DDUtil and the BobSMeter - KBarticle

2010-05-10 Thread Sheldon Hartling (ve1gpy)
It also looks like you can change the S-Meter polling rate using the
BobSMeter Setup menu. On the "System" tab you can set the "Timer/CAT
Interval" to a value in the range 1 to 500 (milliseconds, I assume). The
default value is 20.

I think that Tim was on the right track with the polling rate. I suspect
that it is because the S-meter ap is probably polling as fast as the program
will let it. I am going to guess that you are running VSP manager. Try
turning on Strict Baudrate Emulation and set it to something slow, like
4800B. See if that helps. That will force Bob's S-Meter to slow down its
polling rate because VSPm will delay the query and the response.

Thanks for the explanation. Must've been a bit tired when I read your

withdrawalhi..hi. (My FLEX-5000A is due to be delivered back to me
today after a trip to Austin for some R&R.)

Probably the easiest way to accomplish what you want is to import the 2 .XML
files into Microsoft Access or Open Office. Do NOT link the tables, import
them so that the original files are unchanged. You can then create a DELETE
query for each pair of tables. What you will have left are the records that
are not identical between the 2 tables. Of course, this will require a
working knowledge of how to write SQL queries.

Re: [Flexradio] Mirrors

2010-04-28 Thread Sheldon Hartling (ve1gpy)
Excellent! Glad to hear you've found the main source of the spikes.

If you find network components that aren't RF noisy please report back to
the group. I have/had 3 different Linksys Wi-Fi routers and they were all
pretty bad. I bought an Apple Airport Extreme, found it just as bad, and
returned it to the big-box store for a refund.

I've been thinking about buying some copper screening and building a faraday
cage for the router and its switching power supply. At least, it's an older
model with external antennas. The new clam-shell Linksys routers have
internal antennas and wouldn't be a candidate for external shielding.

I'd be happy to replace the Linksys router if I could find a low/zero RFI
alternative.

I can't be without the Internet so will have my work cut out moving it to

which isn’t RF noisy.. p.s. I just switched the devices off, the psu's were

Hi guys

Thanks for all the tips,

Fao Tim,

Tried SR off & on, no difference, and the spikes or sprogs as they are known
over here are almost identical all the way up to 52Mhz, they are still there
after this but different in frequency spacing and amplitude

I will go round the house switching everything off till I find it, and
strangely enough ESP made me buy some toroids off ebay yesterday... It’s the
Dambusters Hamfest at the weekend (at RAF Woodhall Spa, wartime home of 617
sqn) so will be on the lookout for toroids, and other rfi filters etc

Fao Sheldon,
I've got a Netgear N2000 actually in the shack, and thinking about it I
didn’t have this last year, although I was running a Pro II last year, I
would have seen the spikes on the screen on that too, and I didn’t

Subject to similar divorce considerations, I will look to switching that off
to see what difference it makes...maybe when she isn’t in hi

Any hints tips gratefully accepted, in the meantime I will be off round the
house switching things off, for those I cannot leave switched off then I
suppose its torroids for it!

by giving them away (hihi).  For the remaining router I live with the RFI
and just unplug it when one of the spikes lands on something interesting.

I get a little additional RFI from my Linksys VPN gateway and 24 port
switch, but the major culprit is the WiFi router.  Unshielded switching
power supplies are another good bet.  Try unplugging things one at a time to
see if you can identify the source.  For me, it's pretty dramatic.  When the
Linksys box is switched off the spikes disappear.

I know Linksys is particularly bad for RFI; try googling "Linksys RFI".  But
I haven't found a good replacement yet.  I tried an Apple Airport Extreme
because it looked to be particularly well shielded but it faired about the
same.

I expected to see some specific examples of success with big-store PCs

in the recent thread titled "Results from Big Box store quad cores", but

didn't.

I bought one in November 2009 and it has been working great. I run many

other applications at the same time without problems including most

importantly the full DXLabs suite or N1MM (I actually run both sometimes

without DXLabs Commander as I use N1MM for rig control then). It even

runs full HD video with an optical audio link at 1920 x 1080p so makes a

great media computer also. Cost $450 list without monitor at the time.

Costco has been carrying a similar Gateway Quad PC without monitor. I

have seen it in Costco stores in both NH and UT recently. About $530

list without monitor. BTW, Costco has a great return policy on PCs. If

you buy one, let me know how it works.

I will caution that I could not use the motherboard Firewire board on my

Gateway successfully. Others have reported the same with the SX2800

series. I purchased a $29 PCI express card that I use.

My full description of my setup is contained in the link below to my

November list email.

Hi Joe

I use Bose Companion 3 Series-II speakers with my Flex-5000A and really like
them!

One thing to keep in mind is that you will probably want to feed both the
audio-out from your computer and the audio-out from your Flex to the same
powered speakers. I use a Y-adaptor to combine the two inputs before
connecting them to the Bose speakers.

One bonus with the Companion 3 is that you have a very nice separate AF
control / mute button / headphone jack in a small desktop module.

Ron

When bringing up RDC, click the options button, local resources tab ->
remote audio->settings and make sure that "play on this computer" or "don't
play" radio button is set.

I have not found a way to pass audio through RDC reliably, but do operate
digital modes using RDC all the time.

If PowerSDR is already running when you bring up RDC you may run into issues
if you make audio changes within PowerSDR -- mixer, enable disable VAC etc.

I am trying to use Remote Desktop Connection to run PSDR 1.18.3 or 1.18.4.
The FLEX-3000 is attached to a Neal Campbell low-cost system running Win 7
Pro 32 with all latest FLEX drivers. The remote machines (tried two) are
running Win 7 Home Premium. One an Acer laptop (64bit, Intel SU2300 @ 1.2
GHz). One an HP desktop (32 bit, Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.4 GHz). Connection is
WiFi 802.11g WEP.

PSDR runs properly and can be controlled from the remote machine if it had
been started before the remote connection had been made. However, if I try
to start PSDR from the remote machine, the splash screen appears but stops
with the progress bar about 1/4" along saying Initializing Hardware. It
eventually times out.

Was thinking it might be VAC related because it occurs at the point where
the normal PSDR startup displays "Initializing PortAudio"

I've only tried RDC (so far :-))

Have you tried something other than RDC? Like TightVNC?

The RDP that RDC uses is not a very efficient or "lite" protocol.

BTW, if it hangs during initialization, it more than likely isn't VAC that
is causing the problem because it is not initialized until you actually turn
the radio on using PowerSDR.

Ron, I've seen exactly the same thing with my FLEX-5000A since I first

had time to thoroughly investigate.

Like yours, my PSDR runs properly and can be controlled from the remote

Re: [Flexradio] Odd RFI Problem

2009-12-05 Thread Sheldon Hartling
In my neck of the woods (province of NS Canada), the electrical wiring code
requires that the supplementary ground installed for my ham shack be
connected to the electrical safety ground at the service entrance with a
minimum #6AWG cable.

I buried a ground plate just outside the wall of my ham shack with two wires
connected: (a) a short (nine foot) #3AWG copper ground wire which runs
through the wall to the shack's common ground point; and (b) a #6AWG copper
wire which is run outside and buried a few inches in the ground back to the
main electrical service. There, it's connected to the main house ground
using a split bolt connector before it enters the house.

Thanks for the responses Tim, Dudley and Brian. I apologize as this is a
longwinded e-mail as I went through some troubleshooting. The eureka
moment
is near the end, if you would like to skip all the rambling and details.
Bottom line: RFI causes the printer driver to disconnect the printer from
the network. When the printer software re-establishes the connection to
the
printer, it causes PowerSDR to freeze. RFI source has not been determined.
Read on (painfully) for details.

Well, I did some more detective work. I moved my choke outside my shack.
It was right in the shack before the feedline went outside. The choke I am
using as a Balun Designs 1115ud. The details of which are at:

http://www.balundesigns.com/servlet/the-63/balun-designs-1-cln-1-Isolation/D
etail

The choke is now about 15 feet away from the shack. Probably about 20
feet
from the amp as the coax runs. This made no difference. So I added a
second 1115u (not D version) choke back inside the shack. This also had no
effect, but I am choked to the max to stop any common mode, that is
certain!

For the record, the antenna in use is a Butternut HF9V-X that is about 100
feet from the shack/house. The shack is in the basement below grade. The
feedline is pulled through conduit underground below the very extensive
radial field; 64 radials 40 feet long. I use 9913 foam (RG-8U) coax
throughout my system.

I do use the DPC latency checker. My latency never gets above 100 uS under
the most busy clicking sessions. The machine is built for quality and
speed. Even under this dropping of communications with the Flex post TX,
the latency doesn't rise, so that has been ruled out.

I have added another ferrite choke to the firewire cable that was large
enough to loop the cable through twice. This was no help. I put this at
the computer end, as the two on the stock Flex provided firewire cable are
at the rig end currently.

Another observation of note; The TX must be in excess of 20-30 seconds for
the problem to occur. On a short TX, the problem doesn't occur, even at
PEP
750 watts out on RTTY. The networked printer I mentioned doesn't lose
communications for until at least that 20 second mark is reached also. It
is as if the RFI has to build up. Seems odd.

Certainly, going to a better grade firewire cable is a good idea and I may
do this. But I will work on getting the RF out of the shack first, as I
should. I want to try nipping it at the source. I need to get myself a RF
sniffer in here or build something capable of doing it.

I changed a 2 foot coax jumper between the transmatch and the SO-239 on the
wall to a 60 foot cable I had lying around. No change. So feedline length
had no effect. I changed back to the 2 footer.

As far as grounding the computer to the station, I read the article and was
hesitant at doing this. WAS is the operative word there. I have taken
some
care to insure that the house AC line grounds are not common with the RF
grounds and my metal sealtight conduit that runs up the wall and out of the
shack. My thoughts would have been before this that by grounding the
stations RF ground to the computer, I am making the computer the common
point between the house ground and my station's RF ground. I would have
thought it would be necessary to use a converter plug to lift the ground of
the computer from the house's AC ground circuit. But upon further
consideration, I got out what schematics I have of equipment. I noted
right
off in the schematic for my AL-80B that the AC ground is common with the RF
ground of the SO connectors ,at least by its schematic. Hmm. I do not
have
the schematic f

Re: [Flexradio] Power SDR Freezes continued

2009-11-23 Thread Sheldon Hartling
Hi Ray

In my case the culprit was clearly Norton NIS anti-virus.

Web browsing was just the trigger. It didn't matter if it was IE, Chrome or
Firefox. Surfing the web caused the antivirus software to activate and it
was holding up the DPC queue.

I have the latest nVidia GeForce 9800 GT driver installed from the nVidia
site and the latest RealTek NIC driver installed from HP. The IPIBL-LB
motherboard is manufactured by Asus for HP and support (drivers, etc) comes
from HP and not Asus.

With the antivirus removed and a bit of additional tuning my system is
averaging about 150usec DPC latency with occasion spikes to 400usecs.

I think I'm "out of the woods" but Leon still needs some help :-)

Also, is it your network software/drivers causing the dpc .. when going

Neal spent some time with me going over a list of services that can be
stopped and disabled. Also we turned off most of the Aero "eye candy" (fade

to install - blue-screen-of-death (BSOD) and no drivers.

Hi Leon

I just went through the same thing with a HP Pavilion Elite m9450f running
Win7 (Asus IPIBL-LB motherboard aka HP Benicia-GL8E). In my case, the
solution was to completely remove Norton Internet Security 2010 (NIS). This
dropped the DPC latency from 8000usec max to 500usec when using IE/Chrome.
Disabling virus scanning was not enough - I had to completely remove the NIS
software.

Special thanks to Neal Campbell (K3NC) for his advice and patience!!

available version. I've also tried running the computer without virus

Are there any Flex Radio transceivers in the Halifax NS Canada area?

I'm planning to buy a Flex-5000A and would love to see one in operation
before I take the plunge :-)

Thanks and 73

Sheldon

Re: [Flexradio] Maxivista

2009-10-12 Thread Sheldon Hartling
Thanks, Joe:

-- build a 4-screen desktop using two dual-screen PC's; and
-- Perhaps the most unusual, to create a two screen portable desktop using
my Thinkpad and my macbook. The Thinkpad runs Windows/XP and generates the
dual-screen display and the macbook runs Maxivista on a VMware/Fusion
Windows/XP virtual machine.

I wanted to make my fellow Flexers aware of neat utility. First the standard
disclaimer - I do not work for or represent the company or get any type of
compensation for mentioning it here.

The application is called Maxivista (www.maxivista.com). It allows you to
take a laptop or PC and use its monitor as an extension of your primary
monitor. I know for many folks they just add a second monitor to their
system but if you happen to have a spare laptop and limited space it works
great. I did try the demo first and it worked well under Vista I went ahead
purchased it.
