Re: [Flexradio] 5000 Accessories
I am 67 years old and I haven't used my car in a week, too much technology. I bike.I never expected my Flex to last more than 10 years because of it association with Windows. However I never thought it would be done in by lack of a case. It would seem that someone could be found to do it reasonably, but I am not the expert in these matters. A local station did not maintain its tower and it went over in a hurricane and damaged the building, however they really wanted to get a new building and with the insurance money they did. Is it a stretch to think Flex wanted to end the 5000 and found an excuse to do it? I don't blame them if they did, they are trying to make money selling to 700,000 Jack Bennys, I don't know how anyone makes money selling to hams (except maybe food vendors?). By the way I make Jack Benny look like a big spender (except when it comes to KA1VBQ) --- On Tue, 5/21/13, Bill Marvin wrote: Burt, I believe that the more basic a technology, the longer it will work. Re: [Flexradio] 5000 Accessories
Ray, I believe Burt posted the question, "when will the 5000 be gone effectively from the scene." Nevertheless, I agree with you that Flex continues to support the 5000a and that is good for all of us. My earlier post was in response to the posts that seem to pronounce the instantaneous death of the 5000a. IMO, that could be farther from the truth. Even when the day arrives, that Flex stops supporting the 5000a, the rig will continue to work just fine for those that own one. Just like a lot of other vintage rigs. 73. Re: [Flexradio] 5000 Accessories
Jim, You asked, "In your opinion when will the 5000 be gone effectively from the scene?" I am not that good at seeing into the future, but I can say the following: 1.) PowerSDR is still going to be developed since it is still needed for the FLEX-1500 & FLEX-3000. As long as PowerSDR is an active development project, the FLEX-5000 will still be improved. 2.) PowerSDR development will not go away until Flex discontinues both the FLEX-1500 & FLEX-3000. That is not going to happen in the foreseeable future. To quote someone who is in the know, "The FLEX-1500 is selling like hotcakes." Also Flex needs a product in the $1500-$1700 class. Therefore the future of both radios seems to be assured. 3.) Even when PowerSDR development comes to an end, the FLEX-5000 will remain a useable radio as long as you can maintain a computer that can run PowerSDR. So, the answer to your question hangs on your definition of "effectively" and on factors (such as PC availability) that are outside of Flex's control. I would guess that it is many years away. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/

I agree. I don't understand the uncertainty about owning a 5000a. IMO it's just like most other transceivers. They continue to work long after manufacturers have stopped production and support. There are many vintage stations still on the air today. I don't see the Flex 5000a being any different. It's still a very good radio, and on the used market a bargin. Re: [Flexradio] 5000 Accessories
Like all decisions in the business community, the bottom line is the deciding factor. I suspect sales of the 5000 have dropped because of the 6000 series and would be be more when they are delivered. Just not that much difference between a fully loaded 5000 and the 6500 especially when you consider the cost of a newly tooled cabinet would run the cost of the 5000 up even more. Re: [Flexradio] 5000 Accessories
Larry, If you read my posting yesterday regarding W5KUB's interview of Gerry Youngblood on Saturday 5/18 it was mentioned that the big issue with continuing production of the 5000 was the availability of the case (and all the fallout that changing vendors, etc. would cause). Nearly all the circuit components of the 5000 are industry-standard parts. Even if, in the future, the manufacturer of a specific part discontinues making it in production quantities small quantities should be available for quite a long time. I've recently worked on a couple of mostly solid state transceivers from the 1970s and had no problem (other than having to do a bit of searching for one kinda obscure ECL logic chip) getting the circuity parts I needed. 73, Bill Bowen K8WHB P.S. In 10 or 15 years THE biggest issue might well be finding a computer that is old enough to run PowerSDR (by that time we'll be using 128-bit machines running Windows 12 or something like that :)) > Original Message ---- > Subject: Re: [Flexradio] 5000 Accessories > From: "Larry Otto" > Date: Sun, May 19, 2013 4:53 pm > To: "Neal Campbell" , "Samuel Strongin" > > Cc: FlexRadio Reflector > > > Now Neal, a little F.U.D. never hurt anyone !
