Tim,
Thanks for trying to verify my findings. I am going to make a recording
with fan off and on and send it to Flex-Radio´s trouble shooters for
evaluation.

Willi,

I just ran a few tests to see if I observe the same 20dB electrical
noise emanating from the cooling fan that you are seeing on 15 meters.
With Paul's W1GHZ thermostatically controlled fan controller installed,
I do not see or hear any noise that can be attributed to the fan.

Tim,

Thanks again for your suggestion which I carried out a long time ago.
It remains to do something about the electrical noise of the fan. I see
20 dBm of noise spred out over the lower sideband in the 15 m band which
disappears when disconnecting the fan. While the purist argue about 1/f
noise and freezing of the SDR-1000 to 0 K to reduce thermic noise, I am
looking for a engi-neering change order (ECO) to get rid of the more
substantial electric fan noise.

Yep, That was me who reported it. There is a little too much back
pressure generated between the fan and the vents. You can trace a nice
octagon around the air intake holes by drawing tangents on the existing
holes.

5 minutes with a Dremel tool and a cutting wheel and you are in
business.

Many months ago somebody suggested on the forum to make a large opening
in the cabinet wall behind the fan instead of letting the cooling air
pass through many small holes. The OM reported a sub-stantial noise
reduction and mentioned that the small holes in the cabinet together
with the adjacent fanwheel create a whining sound like a siren .

Re: [Flexradio] noisy fan

2006-05-25 Thread Gerald Youngblood
Joe,
This only works for enclosures that have the fan mounted inside. Yes, you
place another filter spacer inside the box between the front panel and the
fan. You can cut out the grill with wire cutters before installing. Longer
screws will be required.

The Digikey part number is: CR212-ND. I am sure that an equivalent could be
found as well.

I have had a lot of problems with a fancontroler oscilating wildly,
covering the FMbroadcast, Airband and the lower TV channels
with a collectormotor like noise. Swapping the contoler solved
the problem.

forgive my ignorance, but just to clarify: if I break down my fan from the

place another filter spacer, without filter and filter holder, on the inside

enough for this between the inside of the front panel and the heat sink of

Hello all,

Please note that all current production radios use a spacer between the fan
and the inside front panel. This is made from the same filter spacer that
is used on the front panel. This reduces fan noise power by 50% (3dB) as
measured 2 inches from the front panel.

Re: [Flexradio] noisy fan

2006-05-23 Thread Tim Ellison
Yep, That was me who reported it. There is a little too much back
pressure generated between the fan and the vents. You can trace a nice
octagon around the air intake holes by drawing tangents on the existing
holes.

5 minutes with a Dremel tool and a cutting wheel and you are in
business.

Bill,

Many months ago somebody suggested on the forum to make a large opening
in the cabinet wall behind the fan instead of letting the cooling air
pass through many small holes. The OM reported a sub-stantial noise
reduction and mentioned that the small holes in the cabinet together
with the adjacent fanwheel create a whining sound like a siren .

2006-05-23 Thread Brian Sherrod
Just one comment; I hardly even hear my fan! Lot more things in the
shack worry me like the Henry 3K's fan. The SDR muffin fan on mine is
far less noise than the one in my power supply.

If you join the yahoo group I have posted there under
"photos" a schematic and circuit I developed that
works nicely

You may have to down load the pic and blow it up a
little by right clicking and using the "save picture
as" feature

I used W1GHZ's thermostatically controlled fan controller and mounted it
inside the SDR with the temperature sensor mounted on the PA heat sink.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to quiet the fan noise on the sdr1000?
Perhaps slowing it down a bit with a series resistor?
