help with VPC5 & Win95 ...

2002-06-25 Thread Gregory Flinn

hi,

everybody seems to be keen on having VPC 5 run as slow as possible by
installing Win2000 or XP ... at work i run Win95 on VPC4, as it's the other
software that i need for office compatibility, not necessarily a bloated OS,
and seeing as Win95 gobbles up much less RAM then all the more is there for
PC applications.

moving up from VPC3 to 4 was definately a positive step in terms of
effective processing power and (specific) video performance. however,
because of these speed issues i'm still comtemplating the move from VPC4 to
5 (presently the only hurdle stopping me using X at work).

is any body running VPC5 with Win95 and can comment on application issues
when comparing 9 to X? the main problem with my combination (under 9 of
course) seems to be video performance and i/o rather than poor raw
processing power, i.e. the PC lacks a snappy feel, and i'm rather dreading
this being even more so under X ...

for what it's worth:
1). i've already scoured the connectix site for performance tips, and so too
sites giving tips for Win95 (e.g. i run with 320mb given to the PC OS and
with it's VM off ... any comments?).
2). PC applications in constant use are: office 2000 pro (video slow),
navision (fine), labview 6i (video real slow otherwise surprisingly good),
origin 6 (video slow) ... you get the picture, right?!?

thanx for any help.

greg

Yeah, I had that happen too, as have many others. One of the owners of a mac
site also had it happen.

The worst part is apple in some cases is giving users a really hard time in
getting it fixed- and it is a very, very expensive fix if they just decide
they don't want to fix it.

There is a company that even makes replacement hinges with a stronger metal,
along with the paint to touch up the scratches.

Lol, note to apple- when a cottage industry pops up to fix flaws in your
design instead of adding to them, something might need to be fixed.

> Also, it appears the small adapter-to-computer cord on my power adapter is

This is distressing frequent also, but they are pretty good about replacing
them. I've them replaced on a tibook and ibook now.

One thing though- even if the light insn't working anymore (ie, showing
orange for charging, etc) it may still be working and you can use it until
they send the replacement.

Re: PowerBook G4 Rev 2B hinge issue

2002-06-25 Thread DavidWedge

Yes, this is unfortunately a common occurrence. Be very glad that you have it
under warranty. Apple charges around $700 -1100 for this repair (if it's not
under warranty), depending on the mood of the tech you talk to..

IMHO, this is highway robbery, considering the high cost of the machine. And
here's the REALLY ugly part..The truth is that Apple manufactured the hinge
mount using pot metal, which is why they fail so often.. I kid you not. Pot
metal on a space age titanium laptop. Doesn't that make you sick. I'd like to
be the boss of the engineer that make THAT decision!!

On a lighter note... We at Wegener Media realized last year that this was
going to become a real issue, so we have engaged an engineering firm to
develope better replacement parts. You can see a short note about it (very
short--we spend our days doing repairs and little time working on the
website) on our site.. I was astounded that the Titanium would have such a
piece of $*@!T in it, so we spent the big bucks designing a replacement part,
using a military alloy that is 2 or 3 times stronger than the original pot
metal.

This isn't an advertisement board, and I'm not meaning to make a blatant ad
here, but hey, you asked.

Thanks,
David

To reduce confusion, it's better to refer to PowerBooks by their official
designation. Yours would be the PowerBook G4 (Gigabit); other than the
addition of a combo drive, your Powerbook is exactly identical to the
PowerBook G4 (Gigabit) that preceded it.

The only reason i mention this is that there are several schemes for
naming these PowerBooks, a couple of which are contradictory (some call
yours a Rev 3, whereas others state the Rev 3 is the current generation
PowerBook G4 (DVI)). In your case, the addition of the Combo Drive adds no
pertinent information as to your issue, so calling it a PB G4 (Gigabit)
names your powerbook precisely. Calling your powerbook by it's proper name
will also make it easier to search Apple's KBase and Discussion Boards and
get meaningful results.

Apple covered mine, but I haven't looked into whether this is common or
not. They got mine back to me in a hair more than 48 hours.

define "on the fritz"? completely dead? sparking? intermittently charging?

PowerBook G4 Rev 2B hinge issue

2002-06-25 Thread Joshua Diaz

Hello,

I have a PowerBook G4 Rev 2b (667mhz w/ combo drive). I was adjusting the
screen the other night, and the right hinge just snapped!

This really ticks me off because this is my only (competent, usable)
computer. It's only 1/2 year old, and therefore under apple's warranty, but
this is a real inconvenience.

Also, it appears the small adapter-to-computer cord on my power adapter is
on the fritz.

Anyone else had similar problems?

-Thanx, JD

Yep, and OWC is the 'exclusive' distributor of at least their pismo upgrade,
although I saw some stuff on their site as to them trying or getting others.

You can take the fact that only OWC is selling it as a major coup for OWC,
or that newer has burned enough bridges that only OWC will sell their
product now (presumably at a higher profit rate than normal).

I think I've read that this might be related to the fact that Apple made
changes to the display drivers for the Lombard. I kinda remember reading
that some users got some issues after modifying the display attributes, and
that restarting was curing the problem. Of course, I'm not using a Lombard,
so I can't testify that it would work...

Display Problem

2002-06-25 Thread Lawrence & Sarah Ballew

I'm running OS X 10.1.5 on a PowerBook G3 400 Mhz (bronze keyboard).
I have 256 Mgs of ram. Up until now OS X has worked like a charm. And
the upgrades have all been improvements.

My son was recently playing a game, running in classic mode, which
called for 256 colors. This could only be accomplished by setting the
resolution to 800 x600. No problems so far.

The problems came after he finished playing. Since then I am unable
to restore the resolution to 1024 x 786. When I make the switch in
the System Prefs, the screen goes black. The screen is still on but
it is black and stays black. If I restart in 9.2 there is no problem
and I can adjust the resolution and color depth as I choose.

Any ideas how I can reset the resolution here? Wondering if a file
has been corrupted or something like that. Oh, one more item. When I
upgraded to 10.1.5 I also ran an update for the LTPro video card.
This was the RageProFix recommended by MacFixIt.

Thanks for the help,

Lawrence

Re: Unsubscribe email

2002-06-25 Thread Jeremy Derr

Hi All,

The list administrators are well aware of the Unsubscribe and Confirmation
requests that are plaguing several of the lists. There is no need to post
to the list any further about them and any questions about them should be
directed to the listmom or listnannies offlist.

Thank you

FYI, I'm getting lots of 'Do you really want to unsubscribe?'
messages, too. No, I'm staying.
