Hm. The PDF manual you download off the internet has the instructions that

.hac and upgrades

2002-07-18 Thread Scott Moran

Yes .mac blows but so many people have this email address. I am just
gonna pay the piper and then pressure them for more and better stuff to
offer us. You can't complain when things are free but when you pay, you
have a better position to bargain from.

Anyway hello Dan, Laurent, Kyle and the other 599 members of G-Books,
do any of you have any experience with either the NuPowr G4 500 mhz or
PowerLogix G4 500 mhz upgrade for the 400 mhz G3 Lombard. It may be to
early to ask but if they are worth, it let me know, or should I just
take my powerbook with me on a roller coaster to make it faster?

Re: Upgrade

2002-07-18 Thread Seth M.

Just couldn't help myself when I saw this commercial just now. It was one of
the Apple "Switch ads, and I think that funny looking guy hit the nail right
on the head.

"It's like being in a bad relationship."

Sure us Mac users are really angry about what has come of this year's
Smack-to-the-Mac-World-Expo in NY. However, how many of us are still kind of
teetering with the idea maybe just going ahead with this $49 subscription
thing just to see what may come of things or just to support their beloved
Apple Computer at this time or some other godforsaken, dumb, abused-partner
reason to stick with Apple on this one and just see things through on this
one.

One thing's for certain. Between charging people full price for what can
debatably be called an upgrade and not a new OS, there's now a certain
pronounced distrust of Apple by many of us in the Mac community. I wonder
how they're gonna gain back the trust and support of some of its lost sheep
who might be tempted towards "the Dark Side" or stray deeper into the
wonderful world of Linux geekdom.

There's definitely a certain "clunkiness" to the whole .Mac thing. Aside
from being a totally confusing thing. (What, do I type in www.apple.mac now
instead of .com?) And what's wrong with charging people a nominal fee for
basic e-mail service? If you've got 2.2 million subscribers already and it
seems that the majority wants just a good email service. What's so difficult
about saying, "hey, gimme 20, 30 bucks a year just for 5-10 megs of email. I
know we may have said (*not confirmed at this time*) it would be free for
life, but that was in another world when free somehow meant more revenue for
us. Sorry. Pay up!"

What about families? You mean to tell me mommy and daddy have to shell out
$99.95 a year, plus $10 for each additional mailbox for mommy, junior, and
babygirl. Then who gets the good account with the huge space and the little
photo signature feature? I foresee some serious sibling/spousal rivalry
going on here.

Apple, you always say "Think Different". Well, we Mac users out here just
want you to THINK on this one. Seriously.

Yeah. You are using the wrong (and I might mention completely illegal for you
to posses unless you are an Apple Certified tech) service manual. The way to
get to the inside of a Lombard is through the Keyboard. Look at the top of
the keyboard near the 1 and delete keys. There are a couple of little tabs
that you pull back and lift the leading edge of the keyboard up and pull it
back. If that doesn't work then you have the keyboard locked. Look towards
the middle above the 6 and you will see a small standard screwdriver slot that
you can use a small driver to slide the locking tab back.

For future reference. Do not mention Apple Service manuals on this list.
Just ask how to get to the Hard Drive and someone (likely to be me) will
assist you.

I'm thinking of buying a used Wallstreet (not the 233

charging problems and AC adapter problems. I've dealt
with similar issues for years with my old 540c and
don't want to repeat them. Can anyone point me to a

Update on lemlists.com

2002-07-18 Thread Dan Knight

Unless Apple changes their mind, mac.com email addresses are *not* going
to be free after Sept. 30. I don't use enough iTools services to justify
the $99/year Apple wants. All I use mac.com for is email.

Ryan Coleman, of Coleman Web/Internet Services, and I are working on the
details for setting up personal email accounts on lemlists.com. Because
many of these lists are subsidized by ads, we will be keeping the cost of
email addresses to $5 per year -- but we will only be offering
lemlists.com addresses to people on one or more of our email lists.

Signing up for a lemlists.com email account helps subsidize our cost of
managing the server and overseeing the lists, so it very much helps out
Low End Mac.

The server is up and running, although there are no more details on the
website than in this email. We'll probably set a
maximum mailbox size of 5 MB, which is typical, and Ryan does a lot of
work to prevent spammers from using the server, something I really
appreciate as a one-time IS manager and email administrator (not to
mention as someone who gets too much spam daily).

If you are interested in singing up and haven't already contacted Ryan,
please email [EMAIL PROTECTED] Do not reply to me or to the list. We
hope to have things up and running in a few days.

I don't understand why you didn't call Apple right away if you have a
warranty issue. When my iBook battery was determined to be bad, they sent a
new one overnight, I think (maybe two day, it's been a while) and I sent the
old one back in the box it arrived in. Apple paid the shipping and I didn't
have to leave my office. I'd think they would be as accommodating with
something as critical as a power supply.

Heck, just over a year ago when my G4's keyboard went bad, Apple sent me a
replacement for it overnight (told me to toss the old one). Again, I didn't
have to get off my butt and suffer any heat or humidity (driving in a car
without air conditioning).

To date, when I've needed service, Apple has been very responsive and it has
allowed me to continue developing these powerful glutes for long periods of
sitting in front of the computer.

Cable is at home and I'm at work so I'll get you the pinout later. The connector was
about $2 and you need a few feet of wire.

Care is recommended when first applying power. With a lab supply, you can set the
current limit low and slowly increase the voltage until the load draws power. This
prevents smoke from leaving components if power is applied incorrectly, and everyone
knows it the smoke that makes electronics work because when it leaves the electronics
don't work anymore.

Ryan,

All the best from me. When I figured that the power adapter was broken, I
had only 10 minutes battery left. The TiBook is my preferred working tool
and I did not want to cope without it - not even for 48h (so I paid $80
bucks for the new adapter-see prev. post).
I feel they should give you a working adapter in exchange for the broken one
right away, especially within the warranty time (since they are most likely
going to replace yours anyway - check the serial nr).
So you have my full sympathy and I hope you get the ride and your adapter
back in 'no' time.

Have been using the lotus notes 6 beta since it was released - seems
faster than the current 5.0.10 version and I have to use both daily on
each system @ work. so far I like what I see and hope the program just
gets better. No problems with any of the existing databases currently
issued within 5.

You wouldn't pay $20 for a month (or two, or three) of free gas, but
take offense instead? I guess things like road-service agreements seem
like rip-offs, too.

Get a grip, Michael.

Good point :-) Sign the petition for the mere ethics of it but support the
lemlists. He can't get a T1 without us. Support Mac owned businesses. (Mac
user owned that is!)

Jaguar pricing and MS push

2002-07-18 Thread Jim

Strange bedfellows... I suppose, in a perverse sort of way, Microsoft
is helping us in a lobbying effort to make the 10.2 upgrade free for
existing X users. Their veiled threats to discontinue MS product
support if Apple doesn't expand the user base of OS X seem almost as
if they knew in advance that Apple was going to charge for the
upgrade.

Re: TiBook power adapter issues

2002-07-18 Thread R. Hannes Niedner

Yup, had this happen to my power adapter (TiBook, 3months old)) last Friday
night. I went to the local Apple Store on Campus and they made me buy a
second adapter, whilst taking care of the broken one over the weekend. On
Tuesday Morning I was scheduled to pick up the fixed one, and I brought the
new one along to return it. As it turned out they wanted to give me a brand
new one to replace the broken one. This time I dealt with much more sensible
gentleman and he simply reimbursed me and I kept the new adapter and just
returned the box. Go figure.
I hope you can get a replacement right away without shelling out the $80,
even if it was only transiently. Principally I would not mind having a
second power adapter, but then none of the standard Apple ones. I really
love my TiBook, but the power adapter sucks big time (when will they finally
introduce a more sturdy version with a angled plug).

Cheers/h

Didn't see it in anyone's post so I thought I'd give a head's up. There's an

do any good. Let your Mac voice be heard!

This, as well, is incorrect. I was AT the MWNY keynote last year. During
the keynote, it was free-with-shipping-and-handling and I'm pretty sure
he said it'd be available completely free at local AASP's, etc. (I could
be wrong about that).

Even if he didn't mention it being free at local AASP's, EVERYONE at the
Apple Booth was saying that mere moments after the keynote.

Lotus Notes X (and YetAnotherMWNYComment)

2002-07-18 Thread Seth M.

I've been following the .Mac & Jaguar update fiasco. Man, I've got to admit,
this is the first MWNY keynote I would have gone to if it weren't for being
stuck here upstate at school due to testing. I'm really glad *now* that I
didn't go. I heard there was dead silence when Steve dropped the .Mac bomb.
I don't know if I could have took it that well. I've been reading the posts
and yelling profanities all night. You guys seem to have covered all the big
issues so there isn't much I could add.

However, from what I read on MacSlash.org, Apple seems to be soliciting
feedback on the upgrade pricing issue. Hopefully as with all of this
Macworld mess, things will get worked out so us lowly Mac users can get back
to productivity and make enough to afford more bread to go with this sh*t
sandwich Apple's serving us.

Now on to my question. Has anyone had any experience with the Lotus Notes 6
beta for OS X. I haven't heard any buzz coming from MWNY so I guess we'll be
waiting a bit longer for the release, but I wanted to know if anyone had any
experience with it so far. Any comparisons with the Windows version?

Thanks,

Seth

The instruction I referenced were for converting your account. See
"Converting your .Mac trial account to an email-only account" not "Adding an
email-only account". Please scroll down far enough to find that link.

And as mentioned in my other post, the article I referenced stated; "At
press time, however, the options for completing the procedure are not yet in
place." which logically means they will be in place at some point.

Yes, ADDING another email account is available only to paid customers.
However the instructions I referenced are "Converting your .Mac trial
account to an email-only account".

The trial account is FREE, hence converting a FREE account would indicate
that it will continue to be FREE. And if you read the last line in the
article I referenced; "At press time, however, the options for completing
the procedure are not yet in place." then it's obvious that Apple is adding
this option as soon as it can be programmed into their site.

I did just check and it's still not available but then I have no idea how
long it take to add in these additions.
