I just got the ibm card for my Lombard yesterday from OWC. It shows up on the desktop but does not recognize my digital camera when I open imovie. Any suggestions? Re: Wallstreet firewire pc card q?
Advice from a resller who told me that Wallstreet Macs used different types of connections on the PCMCIA bus set me off on investigation into Firewire cards. Nothing I could find mentioned the PC-cardbus, BUT the slowest recommended processor speed for adding Firewire was 300MHz [Belkin]; Swann recommends 400MHz which I think means yuo'd need a Firewire equiped PowerBook in the first place. I don't have the bottle or cash to have a punt but if you get one to work I'd like to know. I have a wallstreet 233 and I use a newertech firewire pc card. It works beautifully for digital video. I use Extensions Manager to keep extensions to a bare minimum when I do video (yes, the specs of the machine are marginally adequate, but it does work; having 320MB of ram and a largish (20GB) hard drive also help --- dv takes up a lot of space). Also, this card is said to work right out of the box with OS X (I haven't tried that). They used to be real cheap, too, after newertech went out of business (I got it from outpost.com for $25). I just got the ibm card for my Lombard yesterday from OWC. It shows up on the desktop but does not recognize my digital camera when I open imovie. Any suggestions? Kevin Hmm, not exactly helpful, but I have used the OWC IBM card with my TiBook and FCP 2, then 3 under OS X and it saw my Sony camcorder just fine, but One thing I did notice about the behaviour. Hot swapping was very, very iffy for me. That is, if I had the card in and the camera attached when I restarted the machine, everything worked fine every time. If however I removed the camera and reattached it, I usually could see it. If I removed the card and re-installed it, I generally didn't see the camera. Having the camera attached and on before reinserting the card seemed to help improve my chances. Now these are my observations on my machine, not the same as yours, but perhaps you can try the combo that worked best for me, a reboot, with card in, with camera attached (and on). Hope that helps for you. B -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Of course I would appreciate the better screen and faster performance, but not sure I can justify the extra money if it's not likely to outlast the iBook in terms of becoming obsolete. There is also the option of getting a refurbished TiBook (I'd recommend smalldog.com) for about the same price as the iBook. But it will be slower Mhz wise than the iBook for about the same price. OS X and things like iTunes etc are optomized for the G4 so will actually run faster. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... taking apart Lombard revisited
What I have is a CD I bought from a Mac Users Group a couple of years ago, not an actual manual, but doesn't the user's manual have instructions for upgrading RAM, requiring removing the keyboard? BTW, thanks for the help, everybody. I don't know why my instructions weren't for the Lombard. I successfully exchanged my 6GB HD for a 40GB. Unfortunately, I forgot to wipe the old drive before taking it out. Someone wrote about a paste for the heat sink. I didn't have or use any. Is this a problem? Thanks again for the assistance. Re: iBook vs. PowerBook
Kimberly, First of all, congratulations on medical school. I finished Architecture school about a year ago and took a different approach to the computer requirement. Since architecture school was a 5 year program, I knew that my machine would be obsolete in 3 years. So consider that you may need to buy TWO computers in your academic career just to be able to run the software you need. Also, consider that you actually need a powerful computer at the end of school (thesis), instead of near the beginning. I entered architecture school with a 180mhz 3400c with 48 megs of RAM in 1997. In 1999 I upgraded the machine to 144 megs. In 2000, I bought a 400mhz Pismo/389 megs the term before my Thesis project. At the end of the term, I was able to do more work than my classmates with a 5-year old 9600. Have you tried execute a thesis project on a 5 year-old computer? It's really painful!! By the way, my friends 9600 cost him MORE than my 3400 and Pismo combined! So I would recommend buying the cheapest powerbook you can afford that meets the standards for school. Then buy a second low-end PB in your senior year. You will recoup at least 30% of the value (hopefully more) of your first PB to buy the second PB. The slowest Powerbook 3 years from now will still me MUCH faster than the fastest/most expensive PB today. Good Luck, Vic Duong PS- your IMAC is probably fast enough to start you out in school if you max out the RAM and add an airport card. Things like running your RAM disk will speed up Photoshop. I'm going to assume that most of the required software will be able to run just fine in OS 9. Then when the required software becomes only avaliable in OS X, then upgrade your machine. I'm going to guess that is another year away. I'm starting medical school in the fall, and looking to get a laptop to replace my iMac DV (400 MHz, 128 MB RAM, OS 9.2) that I bought in January of 2000. For what I currently do with the computer (usual email, web browsing, word processing, and digital photo editing), the iMac is actually almost sufficient except for it's small amount of RAM.
