I seem to have lost the ability to translate doc files (said
ability just arrived with 10.1 or 10.1.2).

Not sure if this happened with 10.1.5 upgrade as I don't use it

More importantly, can we get it back? Or is it something else, like
ya gotta switch it on?

We have a shared multi-printer HP OfficeJet [it's the cousin nobody
speaks about], which is shared between 3 machines using a USB switch
from Belkin. The only drawback - it's manual. You have to push a
button to switch machines. An inellegant solution but it works.

I have a 500 MHz Powerbook G3 (a.k.a.Pismo or 2000 edition or Firewire), 256
Meg RAM, and have hesitated to switch to OS X. Any comments or personal
experience would be appreciated from people who made the switch. I heard
that under OS X I would not be able to play DVD movies on my Powerbook, is
that true?

Yah the processer pops right out of the PowerBook 2000
edition real easy almost to easy, You have to remove
it i think if i remember right to install the lower
ram chip. I remember readin that the 2000 powerbook
was suppose to be a G4 under orginal design but due to
heat problems they intalled a G3 instead. Thus
actually the Powerbook motherboard was a powerbook G4
motherboard with a G3 processor on it. (this was in
macworld or some other mac publication back in 2000 -
have the artlcle somewere filed away in my two
industrial size file cabinets in my little apartment.
To be honest OS X 10.1 works better then the orginal
OS 9.0.4 when i bought it new in Nov 2000. I almost
entirly use OS X 10.1 on it now since i use my G4 Dual
500 for all my audio, graphics and video stuff. The
laptop is a portable for work at a local school and to
transport stuff when i travel. Actually been using it
recently to record MP3s direct from Internet Radio
workin the school during the summer (school is on a
 T3:o)).

Stout just started it this year and I really don't know about all of the
other schools in the UW system, but they are firm about having to purchase a
PC. Students that are in the Arts get a Mac instead, but they also get no
choice, even though they already are getting the best laptop for the job.

The cost (rental) is $500 per year, with a new laptop (unspecified model or
make) after two years, but if anything happens to the computer, the user is
responsible for the cost of fixing it, not Stout.

Re: OS 10.2 and beyond...

2002-07-24 Thread James

If you can afford it go with a gig of ram it is a huge
improvement. I got my gig when the price was $75
apeace for the 512s now i think it is down to around
$100 now from near $200 a few months ago. I would not
recommend running OS X with less than 512 megs of ram
or at least a min of 256 or 384. But 512 or over is
the best. I have not used OS 9.2.2 on the powerbook
2000 in umm i think 2 or 3 months and just booted into
my desktop in 9.2.2 to run techtools (reminds me i
should do that on my powerbook and then try Drive 10.1
which should be here soon to try the new optimizer
that is built in). Over all i am happy with OS X 10.1
As for the DVD rom drive mine died after warenty ran
out but got it replaced in year extention i got after
it expired from macmall and they replaced the DVD with
no questions asked. Since i got the replacement DVD
drive i only used it once to test it to see if it
worked and one other time atm it sits stored away to
sell with the computer if i decide to upgrade in a y
ear or so. Currently use a Bootable CD RW drive as my
main drive since i use it for trasfuring files from
one puter to the other (use my powerbook at work to
download large software files for upgrades 1 times
faster than modem and just write to CD RW mini (mini
CDRW - fits in the inside try). I am lookin forward to
10.2 on it even if i do not get the excelleration but
i do not need it on the powerbook since i mainly use
my dual 500 G4 for Photoshop 7 and other stuff.
When Drive 10.1.1 comes i will let u all know how it
works in OS X if you all want to know - interested in
seein the expanded features :o) I dropped using
Nortons all together except anti virus and firewall.
Use techtools and have for ummm 6 years
take care and have a wonderful day were ever you all
are :o)

Re: OS 10.2 and beyond...

During my break in moving, Remy Davison said:

MPEG-2 decoding in OS X (and various versions of Apple's DVD player on
Pismo and later) is in software, not hardware. Apple added DVD player in
 OS X 10.0.3 or something (?). In OS 9, QT provides a software MPEG-1
 decoder.

but you need to buy the
 MPEG-2 decoder ($20).

 No, you've misconstrued that. It's not a player. It's a QuickTime
 add-on.

Actually, it's a 'codec.' it gives QuickTime Player two new
functionalities -- both encoding and decoding MPEG-2 in software. What
does this mean, exactly? It means QuickTime Player can now play MPEG-2
streams as well as create them. codec is a contraction of COmpress,
DECompress.

Calling Apple's DVD Player software decoding is slightly misleading.
the MPEG-2 decoding is still done in hardware on the graphics card. The
part that has been off-loaded into software is decrypting the CSS copy
protection. Note that if you replace a G4's graphics card with an
inappropriate card, you get a message in DVD Player about the required
hardware could not be found. As long as you install a card with MPEG-2
Support and Mac drivers, DVD Player (generally) continues to work.

I watch MPEG-1 movies in OS X all the time. I don't have any VCDs, so I
couldn't comment on that. But MPEG-1 is definitely there. (FWIW, MP3
is really MPEG-1 Layer 3). Most of my anime library is in MPEG-1.

Pismo doesn't see FireWire QPS Que!

2002-07-24 Thread Sam Donaldson

Hi all, after a long break I'm back with the same problem (sort of).

Yesterday my Que! 8x4x32x cdrw rose from its 6month slumber and surprised me
by successfully burning CDs in both iTunes and Toast 5.1 (OS9.1, 192Mb, 20gb
no other FW devices). This morning the drive didn't even appear in the ASP.

It DOES, however, work just fine with a friends TiBook (same cables and all
that) but no response from the Pismo...

Is that the FW ports gone? Multiple plug permutations and re-plugging-in
and things have no effect, nor does the shut-down/start-up fix-all
solution from Apple. Is there a way to test FW ports without another FW
device (I've not got access to any).

As ever, thoughts, advice, similar problems or even complete solutions are
appreciated,
Thanks!

No. I have the same Powerbook, DVDs play very well on it.

I think that you would benefit from 512MB of RAM. I say this because,
adding up the reserved memory in use when I have a number of things going,
I do exceed 256MB, and you don't want to be swapping to virtual memory.

I've never seen swapping with 512MB (I don't however run Photoshop or
other large graphics/modeling apps); and I've heard of battery module
swapping and battery uptime issues with a full 1GB of memory.

If you haven't invested in OS X now, I certainly suggest waiting for 10.2
before doing so; not much point in going to 10.1.5 now.

I use this Pismo *in preference to* a G4 Powerbook, due to the convenience
of swappable modules (10GB drives and dual batteries, mostly). While I'm
not saying it's as fast as a G4 800MHz, that should give you an idea of
how satisfied I am with OS X performance on a Pismo (I never run 9.2 or
Classic, can't report on that).

The answer is Yes. Which is best depends on your needs. The TiBook is
slim and has a positivley huge screen. The iBook is heavier, costs less,
and displays less pixels on a smaller screen.

The G4 is definitely superior for OS X, but not much better than a G3 for
running the old Mac operating systems. And the iBook's plastic case

Re: Pismo problems

2002-07-24 Thread Michel Treisman

Hi.
I wonder if anyone else has this problem. I have a 500 MHz Firewire G3
Powerbook, with the hard drive partitioned, and I usually boot on the
partition (PB X) that has Mac OS X 10.1.5 installed. For several weeks
now, I have had the following problems from time to time. First,
sometimes a white rectangle appears in the middle of the desktop. It is
like a warning window, with the text missing, that overlies everything
else and can't be dismissed. About the size of the warning window that
sometimes tells me that the battery is running low, but the battery can
have plenty of juice when it appears.

Second, Word freezes, I can't move or close documents, and I can't quit
Word (Quit Word in the File menu is greyed out).

Perhaps these problems are separate. I don't know. I have had both today.

If I restarton PB X and do 'sbin/fsck -y' at start-up, it usually says
'PB X is OK'.

If I boot on the partition(PB A) with only Mac OS 9.2.2 and run Disk
First Aid, it is happy.

If I run DiskWarrior to look at PB X, it sometimes tells me that the
boot blocks are damaged. I let it repair the boot blocks, and things are
OK again for 4-5 days.

Does anyone know what is going on? What should I be doing? Do I need to
reformat my hard drive or could it be a software problem?

 Mike

It appears to me that this information still only promises the shipping of
Endnote 6 for OSX for the end of July, as opposed to the windows version. I
have also heard that beta versions have been released only to an exclusive

Did I miss something on the page? I'd love to get my hands on it.

On Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at 01:25 PM, Ryan Coleman wrote:

Um, why not share on the Tower?

All right we've either got a major cross-communication here or we
re talking about different threads ;-)

That's what I was *trying* to do.

Have:G4 Tower, OS 9.1
TiBook OSX 10.1.5

Turned USB printer sharing on on the tower, went to TiBook, couldn't
find the printer. I can see and mount the shared drive on the tower from
the TiBook, so there's not a problem seeing shared resources, just the
shared USB printer. I tried Go To Server and Print Center and couldn't
find the printer anywhere.

I believe (since I've never gotten it running to see) you need to run
the USB printer sharing control panel to see shared USB printers to use,
since there's a network pane in there.

That said, we found a $25 USB switch which they're going to get which
should solve the problem forthwith.

When in doubt, do it in hardware...

Update on printing wirelessly to LaserSelect 360 using Asante Products ...

2002-07-24 Thread Bryan Forbes

Partial Update/partially solved ... in short the original post was that
I couldn't find my Laserwriter Select 360 over an Ethernet setup using
OS 10.1.4 on a Titanium 667 Powerbook.

Never was able to get this to work wirelessly or even wired via ethernet
(under OS X 10.1.5) ... Appletalk is selected and appears to be running,
but when I try to select my printer it always gives me a message that
Appletalk isn't active. I worked with Apple for quite a while on
this ... updating to 10.1.5 and running various other software updaters
as well.

Also, worked with the support people at Asante (Al is great there)
updating the firmware on the router ... this really had us going for a
while as my internet provider disconnected my account (Mediacom) and
when we finally determined that I was connecting and then getting cut
off after just a few seconds, Al said you'd better talk to your cable
internet provider. They couldn't answer why I was cut off as I have
only been with them 3 weeks and haven't even received my fist bill. I
think when I was connected originally, everything was set up to work,
but not all i's t's were taken care of so they booted me off.
Wireless connection is working fine under OS X, but can't print
wirelessly.

In the end Apple stated that I should nuke and reinstall ... which I'm
not wanting to do at this time.

I was successful in getting to print via ethernet under 9.2.2 so that
will have to work for now. I'm in hopes that Jaguar OS X 10.2 will take
care of this Appletalk problem.

If anyone else has suggestions to solve this without re-installing OS X,
I'm game ...

Now, Can I buy a 3.5 inch disk to put into my pbG3 and put my 6 gig in this
enclosure and not have lots of wires and parts left over?

Well you'll have a large unsightly hole in your keyboard where you were
forced to carve away half of it, half of your processor card and a
goodly portion of the disk module on the right hand side of the PB where
you force-fit the 3.5 drive into the 2.5 space in your PB ;-P

 Short answer: NO.

You would need to buy a 2.5 internal HDD. IBM TRavelstar 2.5 IDE
drives are going for around $120-$130 IIRC. You would plunk that into
your PB for an instant upgrade.

The 3.5 case will hold your old 2.5 drive, but you'll need to buy a
2.5 - 3.5 adapter from an electronics shop...a local one here sells it
 for $6.95.

Re: OS 10.2 and beyond...

2002-07-24 Thread Joseph Ferrare

Just want to add my voice to the more RAM chorus. I went from 256
to 1 gig and noticed a nice difference. I did that after one of the RAM
monitors showed I was using more than 300 meg and was paging out to
virtual memory regularly.

I'd also add that a 5400 rpm drive made a small but noticeable
difference. I went from the stock 12 gig unit to a 32 gig IBM, but I'm
sure those new IBMs with the huge RAM cache are even better. I spread the
two upgrades about 6 months apart, so just when I'd gotten used to the RAM,
I got the HD boost. Hoping 10.2 is my next boost.

Good luck,

joe f.

The major name brands cost more, often twice as much as the off brand.
Lots of people have no problems with the cheaper off brands. Some folks
have had problems that required replacements. But I'm sure it's happened
with name brands as well, though probably not as often. Name brands
often have a lifetime warranty. Off brands may or may not. Then it's
up to the dealer for warranty policy (if any). You're best bet is to
buy from a well-known and well-respected dealer that knows how to take
care of its Mac customers. Even if you don't buy the more expensive
name brand RAM, good dealers will provide good warranties.
