Max out the ram and put as many apps as you can in memory. Put your cache

Re: Dead Pismo

2002-08-16 Thread Joe Ellis

To All the kind folks on this list who provided suggestions it was, in fact,
the daughter card seating that was the problem. It does in fact take so much
force you think you may break it, but when it seats you can feel it pop
into place. With the new 40 GB hard drive and extra half gig of memory, it
seems to be much more responsive than before. Will be getting a firewire
case for the old 10 GB drive which I will use for working on videos of the
grandaughter.

Thanks for all your help;

Re: Personal Laserwriter printing from Pismo

2002-08-16 Thread Remy Davison

Got a question for you networking types. I've got a Personal Laserwriter
300 that works wonderfully with my G3 DT but my wife wants to be able to
print to it from her Pismo. Is there any way to share the printer somehow?
The computers currently are not networked, but I can do that with a
crossover cable and file sharing on the G3. My question is really how to
get her Pismo to be able to see the printer. Let me know if anyone has any
ideas or has hooked up one of these printers to a PB. Thanks!

Unfortunately, that's the only way. Others who mentioned the 320 or
Enet/LocalTalk adapters refer to AppleTalk printers. The 300's good, but
USB-serial converters don't work with serial laser printers.

Only suggestion I can think of is to revert to a Wallstreet ;-)

Re: Personal Laserwriter printing from Pismo

2002-08-16 Thread Philip

I haven't found anything in OS X that works, but I have the same printer
hooked up to my old 6500 (OS 8.6). I then have the 6500 connected via a
crossover cable to my iMac DV running OS 9.2.2. On the 6500 I designate the
printer as a shared printer, and then can print on my iMac through the
6500. I would think I could do that with my iBook (500), too, if I was in
Classic. But I haven't tried.

Discount Airport Station?

2002-08-16 Thread Gregory Cortelyou

A company called PowerMax has what they call last years' model Airport
base stations for $199. Can last years mode be still ok this year? I
would love one to use in my home for my Pismo and my G4 tower. Some of
you must still be using last years. I am running 10.1.5 on both if it

The old base stations can be fully upgraded to Version 2.02, which among
other things, allows PPPoE (in layman's terms this means you can use it for
AOL), and it covers upgraded service as well..We run these older units
exclusively in our shop offices, and are very happy with them. That's why

I've just started using Airport on my Pismo (G3 Firewire) and it is
wonderful. Some questions that ya'll may be able to help me with are:

1) I get the message on my Airport screen that 'false encryption' is there.
What does that mean? The folks who run the system said to check with the
experts -- meaning ya'll.

2) How do you deal with the glare of the sun and bright lights when using
Airport near a window or outside? I thought of an old fashioned camera
shade that goes from the screen to the back of my head, but that may not be
appreciated.

3) Why are there so few people using the wireless connections? The access
is free and legal but I am the only one using it in the mornings in a large
mall type place in Florida.

4) Why are the free access places so poorly marketed? It's as if the geeks
are in charge of the marketing, i.e., 'we built it, so they'll come'
marketing.

5) Why have libraries been so obstinate and pigheaded, even reactionary,
about adopting wireless? They should be the leaders.

6) Are those great maps the wifi folks in Pitt are creating showing any
meaningful growth patterns? Or are they still a function of who has been
wandering around again?

Possible sublist for Airport WiFi discussions

2002-08-16 Thread Dwight Hines

Do you think there are enough Mac folks who use airport to start a list just
for that?

Earthlink is bonding with boingo, or has bonded, but as of yet they do not
allow Macs into the pool. They said they will be ready for Macs by
December.

I think we need a group of unshaven, wooly minded, barefooted Mac Activists
who are Wireless.

Just to keep the dark side a little honest.

Like it is going to be a list like this that has someone case out all the
Gateway computer stores that have inside wireless so we can figure out how
to boost their signal so the restaurants next door, or down the street, can
access their wireless. The people at the stores don't know the answers to
those questions.

Well, technically, it's both. It has a wired LAN connection that could be
switched/hubbed out to support multiple hardwired machines.

Ah, that bright glow of the freshly released ;-)

 2) How do you deal with the glare of the sun and bright lights when using
Airport near a window or outside? I thought of an old fashioned camera

 appreciated.

Look in the back of MacWorld or MacAddict, there's a company that's
selling hoods for powerbooks that lets you do this. They look nearly as
dorky as wearing a photographers hood, though, so you might just want to
move around so you're in the shade ;-) A big golf umbrella works fine
outdoors.

 3) Why are there so few people using the wireless connections? The access
is free and legal but I am the only one using it in the mornings in a large
 mall type place in Florida.

Because they don't know about it.

 4) Why are the free access places so poorly marketed? It's as if the geeks
are in charge of the marketing, i.e., 'we built it, so they'll come'
 marketing.

Hence observation #3. Moreover, they want to be able to hog the
bandwidth for them and their buddies so they can go on marathon Quake
fragfests...

 5) Why have libraries been so obstinate and pigheaded, even reactionary,
about adopting wireless? They should be the leaders.

For one thing, it's expensive.

Libraries are not cheap to run, and apparently the American public
believes that this stuff falls from the trees, since they consistently
whinge about 'My taxes are too high!' and 'My municipal services suck!'
without seeing the linkage betwixt the two.

When forced to choose between giving you free internet access and buying
books, they'll buy books every time.

Secondly, they are *really* worried about being held responsible if
other systems are attacked via their network access. This is the same
reason we're not allowing free wireless access here, or for that matter,
free DHCP access; you gotta register with us to put a system on our network.

They're not reactionary...you're insufficiently paranoid. :-(

What do *you* do when the FBI busts down your door and points automatic
weapons at you and your family, because some hacker's been squatting
outside your apartment, using *your* Airport to attack, say, the
Pentagon, the FAA's ATC system, or Hoover Dam's floodgates.

The feds just passed a law making hacking a system that leads to death
or injury punishable by *life in prison*.

Dunno 'bout you, but *I'm* not gonna let any old Tom, Dick or Harry use
my wifi...not in the face of life in Leavenworth next to Aldrich Ames...

Jeez!

we have a separate list for that??

How about left-handed users of Pismos with custom paint jobs??

Wall Street owners with serial numbers that end with '6'!??

Re: Airport card and cisco wireless network

2002-08-16 Thread lee

Try adding a DNS to your computer and see if that helps. If you can't find
the campus DNS numbers use charters.
