I am glad that you had the foresight to back up your data though. Many people do not. Well, you know me Kyle. I am not the total fool I make myself look like. I will be yelling @ apple for quite a while if my RAM doesn't come back. I marked that with my name in sharpie on the label in July. Of course, if I get a case with no scratches I won't really care all that much :-) You will most likely get your Ram back, but you will not get data back from your HD. Re: OT-ish: iSync?
Reminiscent of Palm releasing their Palm Desktop before the year's end last year eh? I suspect it will be the last day of September, and I would expect it to support USB. If not, I guess I will have to invest in a bluetooth module, or whatever they are. I too am looking forward to sync all that with my m515. Here's to hoping... Re: Netscape 7 not opening
Philip wrote: Hi, I had Netscape 6 on an iBook (14) that suddenly stopped working. The window would open, but the spinning wheel started up and just kept spinning. I've seen several reports of Netscape 7 not starting. For me, after one great day of use, under 8.6, it never started all the way up again - it gets to a point where there's a little tiny window in the upper left corner of my screen, and a BLANK menu bar (all the regular finder menus gone, but the NS menus haven't shown up yet), and freezes there. So I use Mozilla 1.1 which is pretty much the same, and starts, and runs. It's SO MUCH better for browsing than Netscape 4.79 that I had been using - loads pages faster, doesn't reload on every resize, doesn't decide it's had enough refuse to load more pages until quit restarted, much better control of cookies popup windows etc. Plus cool themes to download :-) Anne -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: .Mac
I don't know where you got your info that a Pismo isn't worth upgrading, I have a 400 mhz pismo right now that has a 40 GB drive and 756 MB of Ram running OS 10.2.1 and I actually use it more than my 867 mhz G4 (primarily because I like to sit and watch TV in my living room while I surf or play a game). It's a rock solid machine that, as far as I'm concerned is the equal of all but the most feature rich new TiBook. I'm just waiting until I get the cash together to upgrade it to a 500 mhz G4. If you check the auction sites for Pismos that have been upgraded to more Ram and larger hard drives, I think you'll see they are going for prices comparable to newer iBooks in fact you may have a hard time finding one, they sell quickly at premium prices. Anyone run(ning) a PB 2400c G3 upgrade?
Hello all, I just picked up a 2400c at surplus -- another Powerbook discarded as dead, requiring just a little fiddling to make work. Anyway, I know that at one point a few G3 cards were available for this model. So I was wondering if anyone has run or is running a G3 in a 2400/Comet model. I'll be checking websites, LEM, etc, but thought I'd also ask here. BTW, OT, but I also picked up a Powerbook 150, rated one of the worst ten Macs ever built. ;-) I overpaid at $25. And a 9500 ($35), and a B/W G3 ($180), and a seven apple 17 monitors ($30). Re: Upgrade Pismo?
Anthony, You definitely want to upgrade OS X to at least 10.1.5 and if you can afford it upgrade to OS 10.2 (Jaguar) (10.2.1 is a free update) You will have trouble trying to view a DVD in OS 10.0 (won't work, not supported) If you are going to use it for video editing, get a larger hard drive, in fact, the one you listed is just barley big enough for OS X. There are 40 GB drives resonably priced and available. The G3 is OK for processing video and photos but if you get into it hard-core you may want to get the G4 upgrade. Re: Anyone run(ning) a PB 2400c G3 upgrade?
where on earth do you hear about these? i would love to go to one, but i doubt they have them in NY. On Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at 01:51 PM, Joel Furtek wrote: Hello all, I just picked up a 2400c at surplus -- another Powerbook discarded as dead, requiring just a little fiddling to make work. Anyway, I know that at one point a few G3 cards were available for this model. It seems like a pretty good form factor, as small as it is, and with Cardbus enabled firewire or wireless networking should be possible. I gotta stop going to these auctions. Thanks in advance for any knowledge anyone has. Great list. PB2400 and Surplus Auctions
Thanks to all who gave me good direction. I'm really amazed at how small the 2400c is. I love my WallStreet, but for certain trips the 2400c might be the ticket. Or, maybe I'll loan it to my coworker, or resell it. We'll see. I went out on a limb and spent a little too much for it, $150 without the power adapter. But it's just pretty cool. As for the surplus auctions, nearly every public university or state government runs one. In NC, all state organizations had to surplus any old goods, and there were weekly closed-bid auctions. Here, UVa has monthly live auctions which are great fun to attend. If the mood had struck, I could have picked up a dozen 7200s for about $70 for all, and monitors to match for $40 total. I also passed on the two SEs with Ethernet cards...and an old Plus. Not to mention all the crazy stuff you've never seen before. I have to admit that I bought the 9500 only because I couldn't stand to see it not sell -- the guy started at $100 and had to drop to $20 to get the bids going. So check your state and public university web sites!. But stay away from Charlottesville. ;-) (Kidding, there was a woman today trying to get a Mac for herself, I'd helped her spot some good ones on the preview day, and I stayed out of the one she was after. It's just all fun for me.) Re: .Mac
I actually have the same configuration as you. I just want to know what you achieve by upgrading the *processor*. Can you elaborate on this? I have a Pismo 400 but I understood it wasn't worth upgrading. Jim On Tuesday, September 24, 2002, at 09:19 PM, Ross Cottrell wrote: Speaking of cheap, I think the best cheap way to get a full featured G4 Pbook is to plop an upgrade card into a Pismo. I'm thinking of finding a 400 mhz Pismo and trading in the old Wallstreet 300. It may not be worth it. If you pick up a 400 mhz Pismo for ~$900-$1000, add a G4 card for $300, then fork out $300 or so for a expansion bay cdrw, you are into some real money. And you still haven't added the necessary ram and hard drive upgrades. And you'll never have a Quartz Extreme capable video card. I can't really make a strong argument for upgrading any older Powerbook, except that it's a lot of fun to pull stuff out and put new stuff in. My Pismo is already pretty upgraded. What would a $300 G4 card do for me? Jim On Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at 09:34 PM, Ross Cottrell wrote: It may not be worth it. Re: Pismo 400
HEAT HEAT HEAT my worry will the powerbook 2000 be able to handle the extra heat the G4 produces as well as what are the long term effects on the computer? If your computer is hot now with the battery it will get even hotter with the G4. Are the batteries lifes goin to be shortened is the life of the computer goin to be shortened? The Powerbook 2000 was suppose to be a G4 but for reasons the G3 went in due to the heat problems. I would wait till the G4 is fully tested before jumpin and what about future Software updates in the apple OS ? Will the Powerbook support beyond OS 10.3 ? Maybe wait if you can till a better powerbook comes out. I have found the Processer upgrades are good to a point but soon the computer outdates itself wit hthe current hardware and software = Israeli politics, as such, was and remains a busy street.
