Re: Netscape Emergency Help

2002-10-01 Thread K

Greetings Listas,
I would like to thank everyone that took the time to send me info on how to
try to resurrect a deleted user profile in N/S 4.79. Unfortunately, I was
unable to restore anything due to the fact that my 20 year old son ran
Norton
Utilities following the deletion. He ran Disk Doctor then Speed Disk to
defrag the hd and it appears that everything is well and truly trashed.
Rest
assured that we are having a VERY detailed discussion about his actions...It

turns out that he disagrees vehemently with me politically and didn't care
for
the political discussion groups that I follow..He thinks that the Fox News
Network is the Fountain of Truth and I don't. I will try to create a new
profile and see if there is a way to password protect it so he can't access
it
at all. Anyone know how to do that?
At any rate, it really feels good to belong to such a caring and helpful
community.
Again, thanks so much to everyone..
Best regards,
Mike Kochkodin

Well, if you would be using OS X, then every user has its own set of
profiles, and nobody can't access them, besides the owner. If you're running
OS 9, you might get something similar if you run Multiple Users. But
Multiple Users is not very hard to bypass, if one knows how to do it...

Good Deal Alert

2002-10-01 Thread Dan Pennington

G-Book Listers
I've got a Pismo 500 that came with a 12 gig hard drive. I swapped
out the 12 gig for a 40 gig drive and put the 12 gig into an
external USB enclosure that I bought online for a fairly low price.
It worked transferring all my stuff to the new drive, but very slowly.
I had to use it to backup and reinstall all my stuff when I recently
did a partitioning of the 40 gig drive to get ready to install OS X.
Again very slow.
Next time it won't be so slow. I bought a new FireWire enclosure for
the old drive on eBay from this guy:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2056413320
$29 for the enclosure and $10 for shipping - seemed like a good deal
to me. Got the box in the mail today. Took 5 minutes to put the 12
gig drive in the box, plug into a FW port on my Pismo, no software to
load, and it popped right up on my desktop in OS X. I test
transferred a large folder full of stuff to the internal hard drive
and it seemed only a little slower than from one partition to another
on the internal drive and amazingly faster than the USB transfer. If
you are in need of an external 2.5 inch hard drive box, try this one.
I think the guy on ebay has a handful of ads for these. I don't know
him/her and I have no connection the business. Just passing on what
I think is a good deal.

Still no joy. The procedure outlined before doesn't work. Resetting
PRAM has not affected the problem and booting into OS 9 doesn't work.
It would appear I have a defective power manager circuit. So now what?
Live with it for now I guess.

The easiest way is actually opening the keyboard. You'll see the
airport card right there without having to really "open up the
machine". Otherwise, you can look in the System Preferences->Network
and see if a network port for Airport exists... Airport is only an
option if an Airport card is present.

In that case, yeah, should be no problem. You'll have to install the
firewire extensions manually though, I think.

Re: wall street power questions

2002-10-01 Thread Byron Gardner

Chris, I find that long delay in both my Wallstreets running OS 9.2.2
and I have found it due to networking configurations. If I disconnect
the ethernet cable, the delay is much shorter. I see the same behavior
with OS 10.2.1. But I know what you mean about long--it is really
annoying.

The battery issue is interesting as I am guessing you are also a PC
laptop user such as I. (Have to as that is what my job calls for---not
my choice people so please no nastygrams)

The Wallstreet batteries from Apple have lights on them which light up
as the battery is charging. Third party batteries do not with the
exception of BTI batteries. The only way to see if the batteries are
charging are by looking at a running PB and in the menu bar the battery
icon has the lighten bolt by it. PC laptops all have some kind of light
indicating charging and connection status. I guess Apple feels they are
better than that. Of course, when you own the software and the box it
goes in you can do what you want. (That's why some feel that Jaguar
should be named Cheatah since it takes $129.00 to own it.)

In any case, there is no charging light except on the original Apple
batteries and Apple ain't making those anymore

BTW, I am not an expert but have had my original Wallstreet for 11
years now. It has served well. The other was a hand me down but just as
rugged. They are good machines, last of the serial machines.

Take care,
Byron

Re: wall street power questions

2002-10-01 Thread DavidWedge

Chris,

The reason for this is that your Wallstreet probably has a large amount of
RAM, and the time is due to the machine testing the RAM before starting up.
If you want a fast startup, pull all but 32mb of RAM out of your
machine--it'll start up much faster! ; )

Unfortunately, there is no charging indicator on the Wallstreet either. The
battery will begin showing lights a few seconds after it begins
charging--that is your indicator. However, if the machine is on, there will
be an indicator in the top menu bar (over to the right of the clock), showing
AC charging, battery dead, etc.

An easy way to know if your machine is charging is to listen when you plug
your AC unit into the wall--it'll 'pop' when it plugs in, and occasionally
spark. that tells you there is power, and the unit will begin charging. Don't
freak out--it's perfectly normal to spark slightly (or make a pop-ing sound);
that's just the capacitors in the AC adaptor getting charged up to do the
dirty work

Thanks,
David

Use Network Utility to check the Ethernet interfaces you have on your
machine. Usually, you should have 2: the regular, 100 Mbits wired Ethernet
and the wireless one. Usually, wireless is defined as 'en1'. Or, you can use
Apple System Profiler maybe, but I think that this will show you the active
interface, so if the AirPort card is not active for some reason, you won't
see it, so I suggest you try Network Utility first. You can use any version
of AirPort Base Station. I believe that if your card doesn't have the proper
firmware, the AirPort software will update it, but I'm not sure on that one.

Re: airport card in Pismo

2002-10-01 Thread Joe Ellis

You can check to see if the card is installed by opening the internet
connect panel in system preferences and telling it to turn on airport. If
the card is installed you should see the panel with a signal level
indicator, even if you are not near another airport machine (the indicator
will show no signal). To check to see if it's installed physically by
opening the keyboard. (Unlock the center lock and then pull back on the 2
latches and lift the keyboard) The card sets on top of the pmica cardbus in
the left corner of the machine under a metal shield. Instructions on lifting
the keyboard and installing a card are here: <

On my Lombard there are 4 green lights on the battery itself.
When it's deeply discharged it starts with one light. As it charges it
increases the #. When fully charged no lights.

wall street power questions

2002-10-01 Thread Christopher Hack

hi G-book world.

I have a WallStreet, and a couple of questions for the powerbook experts out
there.
1. can anyone tell me why there is what seems like a huge gap between the
time when I press the start button and get that wonderful "apple sound", and
when the hard disk starts spinning. I have timed this at 28 seconds.
2. also, I have long been surprised there is no flashing light on the
machine to indicate when the power is connected and the battery charging,
something which seems common on every other laptop I've seen. is there a
broken bulb in my machine, or is there really no "charging light" on the
wallstreet.

many thanks in advance.

Chris

ps. much gratutude for this excellent list. i have learnt so much in the

Well, no the card readers need no drivers. They will appear as
removeanble drives.

As for the PCMCIA drive, I'm not sure what you're talking about. Is this
a hard drive with a PCMCIA interface or what?

have you tried resetting the Open Firmware??

The process for doing this is as follows:
1. swear off any revenge against me if your computer dies completely,
self-destructs, or catcches fire.
2. startup, holding down Apple+Opt+O+F (Open Firmware)
3. Type: reset-nvram (then hit return)
4 You should get an "OK"
5. Type: reset-all (then hit return)
6 Type: reboot

that should do it.

IBM has just released the TravelStar 40 GNX, the fifth
generation of 5400rpm 2.5in. HDDs. This newest entry
is only 9.5mm high (older gens were 12.5mm), and spins
on ultra-quiet liquid bearings.

I ordered mine last week, and it rocks! Googlegear has
since lowered the price five bucks, to the most
excellent price of $158 plus $.50 Fedex two day

In a message dated 10/1/02 8:57:01 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

<< Well last night I took the plunge and decided to re-install OS X to see if

it would correct my sleepless Pismo. First I tried to do an Archive and

Install. While the installation went off without a problem, I still had a

backed everything up to my external firewire drive and did a full clean

install, interestingly when I completed the initial install of Jaguar and I

completed entering my baseline information, name, address, .mac account

data, etc. it immediately launched software update and told me it wanted to

install 10.2.1, iTunes 3.01, and the security update. I let that proceed and

after completion I presume I now have (before reloading backups) a clean

system with the latest updates. BUT THE MACHINE IS STILL SLEEPLESS! Use the

menu item, screen blanks then lights up again, close the lid, the backlight

goes out and the sleep light pulses; but I can hear the hard drive cycling.

I opened the process viewer but I'm not sure that it can help. Rather than

list them all, it says there are 32 processes running. Perhaps someone else

___ >>

Maybe some of these steps will help discover the root of the problem.

Important information about system sleep

Certain system settings may prevent your computer from going to sleep. You
may notice that the screen dims and the sleep indicator light pulses, but the
internal fan still runs.

Many communications programs, such as PPP, Apple Remote Access, and other
dialup programs, monitor the computer's modem port to check for incoming
transmissions when set to auto-answer incoming calls. This may prevent the
computer from going into sleep completely.

If the Configure pop-up menu in the TCP/IP control panel (Mac OS 9) is set to
Using DHCP Server, your computer may not sleep when your Web browser or email
application is open or a file server is mounted on your desktop. Quit these
applications and unmount file servers when they are not being used.

The Palm Desktop HotSync function may prevent your computer from going to
sleep. To turn off the HotSync function, open Palm Desktop and choose Setup
from the HotSync menu. Then click the Disabled button and verify that the
"Enable HotSync software at system startup" checkbox is not selected. Turn
HotSync back on when you want to synchronize with your Palm-compatible
device.

If you use fax software, such as FAXstf, and the software is set to
auto-answer, your computer may not sleep completely. The screen will dim
(instead of turn off). To allow your computer to sleep, disable
auto-answering. To disable auto-answering in FAXstf, open FaxBrowser and
choose Settings from the Edit menu. Then choose the FaxModem icon and choose
Never from the Answer On pop-up menu.

Note: If you connect a USB device while the computer is in sleep, your
computer wakes.

9 will take several seconds to wake up if AppleTalk is on. Before I switched
full time to OS X, I had to keep AppleTalk off all the time and turn it only
when I really needed it, like printing to my LaserWriter. All the other
time, it was off because that wake up delay was really annoying...

Is the machine sleeping under 9? Did you try resetting the power manager?

Re: Sleepless hard drive still sleepless in CT

2002-10-01 Thread Joe Ellis

Well last night I took the plunge and decided to re-install OS X to see if
it would correct my sleepless Pismo. First I tried to do an Archive and
Install. While the installation went off without a problem, I still had a
sleepless machine after all that! S, decided to roll out the big guns,
backed everything up to my external firewire drive and did a full clean
install, interestingly when I completed the initial install of Jaguar and I
completed entering my baseline information, name, address, .mac account
data, etc. it immediately launched software update and told me it wanted to
install 10.2.1, iTunes 3.01, and the security update.
Perhaps someone else
could check their machine and see if the number correlates to theirs. I did
have a Bluetooth adapter and a wireless mouse plugged into the USB ports,
but I unplugged them and still have the problem.
I am now officially at the bottom of my bag of tricks, anyone got a
suggestion?

2002-10-01 Thread K

I'm using 9.2.2 and the AppleTalk is on for Airport to work..it stays on when the
system sleeps and no problems on wake-up.
