Re: [PB]Entourage

2002-10-02 Thread Greg Gilmore

On my daughter's fairly new iBook, I cannot, try as I might, get the silly
Mail program to send mail, though it will receive. The outbox doesn't even
have a send button. Have tried reinstalling the OS (10.1.4), have repeatedly
 checked all configurations.

Not sending mail is invariably a problem with the SMTP settings. Make
sure they're set correctly (check with your ISP if you have any questions.)

Thanks for the reply, Bruce, but when I mentioned in the orginal query that
I had repeatedly checked all configurations, that included the SMTP
settings.

remote access control strip module glitch

2002-10-02 Thread Greg Gilmore

Might anyone know why my TiBook 667/OS9.2.1 hangs for several seconds when I
choose 'Connect' from the Control Strip Remote Access module and fails to
connect? I'm able to connect by opening the Remote Access control panel and
selecting 'Connect' but the control strip module ought to work.

Your date is way off so you may not get replies.
Interested in responses as I am now on a Lombard.

Thanks, Mike. Trying again with correct dateŠ

What's the cheapest way to replace about 2 dozen key caps on the Lombard my
wife inherited from me after I beat the tar out of it and bought a TiBook?
Some of the letters have been rubbed off completely.

They're $3 a piece at pb-parts. Don't need a whole new keyboard, especially
at $110, which was the cheapest one I've been able to find.

I check in with eBay once in a while and those usually get sold for more
than I'd like to pay just for the keycaps.

Automatically connect to Airport network?

2002-10-02 Thread Amber Rhea

Hi everyone,

It used to be that when my iBook detected certain Airport networks (such as
the one at my home, and the one in the building where I have most of my
classes, it would automatically connect to the network. But recently (past
few days) for some reason it's stopped automatically connecting - instead I
have to go up to the little Airport icon in the menubar (OS X) and select
the network. I can't find a preference to set anywhere... anyone know what's
up?

Thanks,
Amber

Fire

I use Fire to chat with AIM and Yahoo Messenger. Today it started randomly
disconnecting me and reconnecting me. After this happened several times, I
started getting an alert over and over again, saying You have been blocked.
Maybe you've been signing on and off too often or too quickly. I quit Fire
and restarted it, but still got the alert. How do I make this go away so I
can use Fire again?

Yeah there was a change in AIM's servers yesterday that's causing the most
recent released version to break for AIM. Yahoo, ICQ, and MSN should still
be working fine though. Unfortunately they have not officially released a
working version yet but they have fixed the issue. If you have the 10.2 Dev
tools installed on your machine and aren't shy about using Terminal, you can
actually go to http://www.epicware.com/fire.html and download and compile
the source code (they have instructions) to get the new working version.

In System Preferences-Network, make sure that under Airport you've

The more I stumble along the more frustrated I get, I have concluded that
the Power Manager circuitry in my Pismo is, in fact, defective. So I have
decided to stay sleepless until it's convenient for me to live without the
laptop while it's repaired. Having made that decision, I went to restore my
hard drive using the DVD disks I built with .Mac Backup and guess what? THEY
WON'T RESTORE! Tell Backup to restore from CD/DVD and the application says
to insert the Master disk which it states should be the last one made when
the backup was generated. There were only 2 DVDs built when I did the backup
and it doesn't matter which one I put in the drive, the application just
sits there spinning it's wheels while I shuffle DVDs in and out of the
drive. I originally built the DVDs by placing the laptop in Target Disk mode
on my G4 machine so I could burn the backup DVDs with my Superdrive on that
machine. It appeared to work like a charm, but the recovery doesn't. Am I
going to have to place the laptop back in Target Disk in order to recover?
Stay tuned boys and girls, the saga continues

Still no joy. The procedure outlined before doesn't work. Resetting
PRAM has not affected the problem and booting into OS 9 doesn't work.
It would appear I have a defective power manager circuit. So now what?
Live with it for now I guess.

have you tried resetting the Open Firmware??

The process for doing this is as follows:
  1. swear off any revenge against me if your computer dies completely,
  self-destructs, or catcches fire.
  2. startup, holding down Apple+Opt+O+F (Open Firmware)
  3. Type: reset-nvram (then hit return)
4 You should get an OK
  5. Type: reset-all (then hit return)
  6 Type: reboot

  that should do it.

  Thanks,

The funny thing is I once tried this since it seemed the logical choice, but
with this setting my TiBook behaves like described by Amber. I had to set it
to Join most recently used available network (and have it remember the
password) and now it switches transparently (well you see the scrolling
login indicated at the little airport signal menu icon) from Roadrunner at
home and 2 different wireless networks at work.

I've been using the Microsoft Intellimouse Wireless for a few months now on
my BW G4, now running 10.2.1. The nice thing with it is that Microsoft did
port their Intellimouse software to OS X. The less nicer thing is that this
thing sucks batteries like you wouln't believe. I have to replace a set of 2
about every 2 weeks. Plus, and I think this has something to do with OS X,
since I've never experienced this while running OS 9, the mouse goes to
sleep very quickly. Something like 30 or 45 seconds. And then, no matter how
you move it, at least in my case, it won't come up. I have to click a
button, any button, to make it wake up. That is really frustrating at times.
Also, when using the scroll button, it seems that the Intellimouse software
gets caught in some endless loop, i.e. it won't get out of that mode until
you click somewhere. I thought that, on OS 9, as soon as you release the
scroll button, the mouse stops scrolling the content of the window or list,
but that doesn't seem to be the case under OS X. So, I think that there is
still some snafus or quirks that need to be worked out of the Intellimouse
software.

You have been warned! However, it's nice not having the cord anymore...

chasing jaguars on wall street

2002-10-02 Thread christopher . hack

i have a wallstreet 233. Can anyone tell me what it would take to run Jaguar
comfortably. if i increased the ram enough would that do it, or is the processor just
too slow?

I know it is always s possible to shoehorn a new system on an old model, but would
only really want to make the move if it did not slow things down so much they were
clunky. Any suggestions?

thanks

I don't see that option anywhere. Sorry, maybe I'm not looking in the right
place. I'm running 10.1.5 if that helps.

I am not sure if this particular setting was already present in pre Jaguar
version. In 10.2.1 you can find the setting in
 System Preferences-Network - Show Airport-Airport Tab

Unfortunately I cannot check if you will find it in 10.1.5 since I have only
Jaguar running.

Good luck/h

That's the reason. You need to run OS X Jaguar 10.2 to get access to that
new functionality.

Maxing up memory would certainly help. I would say go for 512 MB if you can.
Don't expect stellar performance from a 233 MHz machine, though. You could
look for a processor upgrade to a G4. It would almost feel like you have a
new machine...

Re: chasing jaguars on wall street

2002-10-02 Thread c d

I'm running Jag on my Wallstreet II 233 right now (128MB RAM, 4GB HD.) It's
not particularly fast, but it's usable enough for me. I usually have
iTunes, Mail, IE, Word, Terminal, and System Preferences open, and I haven't
had a crash or problem in the 2 weeks I've been using 10.2. I really don't
have any complaints over 9.1 except for scrolling speed - it's slower in
10.2. The crash protection (I was crashing 1-2 times per day before), fast
waking up from sleep, and look feel (I love Aqua) more than make up for
it, for me at least. I only use this machine for web surfing, email, and
writing, with the occaisonal bit of HTML and Photoshopping.

I'll probably upgrade the RAM when I can find a low profile 256MB chip at
the right price. A G4 upgrade may be a dead end given the video card in
this machine (PCI based, no OS X drivers still). If they were around $299
like the Pismo G4 upgrades, I'd probably bite in a minute, but $379-399 is
too steep for me.

My advice is to Max your RAM and get a bigger faster hard drive. I'm
running a pismo with 1 gig and a 40 gig 5400 HD with Jaguar, it runs faster
than my original pismo ( 256 meg ram 12 HD) on 9.2.2

Q: best option for wireless printing

2002-10-02 Thread Andrew

I want to set up a printer over my wireless network.
My printing requirements are pretty modest, maybe 10 pages per day
mostly text.
I've got both PC and MAC (mixed marriage) using Lucent Wavelan Silver
cards and a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless hub.
The PC is a IBM thinkpad 560x, WIN98
The MAC is a Wallstreet G3 Powerbook
I have a number of Canon Printers to choose from.

I was looking at the D-Link 713P but just found out the printer server
only works with Windows.

Any reccomendations?

Thanks

This article is so full of half-truths and misleading statements it
would be funny, except that people are saying it's proof that Apple
wants to control everything.

There's a long, contentious discussion of this over on Slashdot, but
bluntly, it's Greg Landweber complaining that he can't easily do
'Kaleidoscope for OSX'.

OSX is supremely 'tweakable'; what isn't (as easily) tweakable is the
Aqua interface. Apple is no more 'closing the OS' than they're making
our Macs boot into Windows...

They lie that the API's involved are not available to developers.
They're there in Libararies/Private. They're even documented to a large
degree.

What Apple *doesn't* guarantee is that the next upgrade wont' break
things dependent on those libraries. That's why they're there in
Libraries/Private instead of Libraries/...

This is largely what Apple has *always* said, since the advent of the
Mac: there are API's and interfaces that Apple has said 'Don't use this,
it'll break in the future.'

What the people in the articale are complaining about is that they're
using these libraries, and Apple's breaking them without telling people.

Re: Hotline

ether:

Has anyone found a Hotline client that actually *works* with OS X? I've
tried iSwipe, HotCocoa, and HotPants (and plain ol' Hotline Client under
Classic) and none of them work - I can't connect to any servers. (Hotline
Client 1.85 works fine in OS 9.) Can anyone recommend a client?

Hotline Client 1.8.5 works under Classic. Contact me off list if you can't
find it.

I know it is always s possible to shoehorn a new system on an old

things down so much they were clunky. Any suggestions?

Yes. Or you can just use the OS 9 installer that came with that machine to
install onto the same partition.

Are you certain that you don't already have OS 9 on the machine? Go to the
Apple menu (upper left corner of your screen), go down to System Preferences.
Look at the bottom line in the window (System). Look for the item Startup
Disk. Click on this. The operating systems that are present will show up in
the window (may take a few moments). If OS 9 is there, you can click on it,
then select Restart, and the machine will boot into 9.

If you do have OS 9 on the machine, do you need to boot into 9 or can you
operate in Classic? If you can utilize the latter, you can just choose to
start Classic. Then you can remain booted into OS X and use Classic for
legacy applications when necessary.

Re: usb problems

2002-10-02 Thread Kathryn Odell

I reseated the usb card (as well as the firewire card next to it). I'm sure
it's in there right. I tried the printer and cable with my laptop. They work
fine there, but when I connect to the usb card, it's a no-go. I connected a
usb floppy drive to see if the disk would appear on the
desktop--interestingly enough, the floppy doesn't even seem to get power
from the port. The light doesn't come on, and of course no disk on the
desktop. I'm thinking the card is bad.

 Kathryn Odell wrote:
This is a bit off topic, but it does involve a g3. In addition to my Pismo I
have a beige g3 desktop. I added firewire and usb pci cards to it which have
worked well for the last few years. However lately I've had problems with
the usb-it's not recognizing that the printer is connected. I've uninstalled
and installed the print driver (it's a fairly recent hp), but still no luck.
 Could the card be bad?

 test some other USB devices

try a new cable with the printer

try opening up the G3 and pulling and reseating the USB card. (Actually,
 I'd do this first.)

Re: airport card problems?

2002-10-02 Thread Kathryn Odell

It looks like my problem was caused by ATT. I had very slow downloads and
could not send emails. The wired computer had the same problem, so it wasn't
just my laptop.

I've got a new problem...I have an airport card in my Pismo which I use with
a Netgear wireless router and a cable modem. Just today I noticed problems
with my connection. When I checked the airport control panel, the status bar
goes from sensing the wireless connection to not sensing anything. Back and
forth, over and over. I tried restarting the computer, to no avail. Anyone
 have any ideas?

 Thanks, Kate

Pismo LCD/backlight

2002-10-02 Thread Jeff Hubatka

Here's the situation: We're trying to replace a broken Pismo screen with a
Samsung LCD number LT141X7-124. With the new screen hooked up, the backlight
suddenly doesn't come on. It doesn't work when the old screen is put back
in, either. Everything is somewhat readable if the PB is held up to a bright
window, but that limits the portability. Is there a way to test just the
backlight? How is it controlled? Of course the tough question is did we
somehow damage the inverter board?

Re: Portable color recommendations

2002-10-02 Thread Psychle

I highly recommend the Canon BJC-55. It's light weight, completely portable
with fairly long life battery and has two cartridges, black and color (three
colors). The biggest drawback is that the cartridges are small and need
replacing frequently. There should be more formal reviews online that you can
check out. - Steve Greenberg

Memory Cache Problems

2002-10-02 Thread Lockwood C. Barr

Help, anyone! Is there an easy way to solve the instability happening with
my G3 Bronze 320 RAM, (20g Hard Drive, 400 mhz processor). Every time I boot
up, I get the message about Cache Memory problems, see local tech rep,
etc...
Trouble is, here in Vienna there are very few reliable repairs places for
Macs. I can do limited stuff myself (I installed the extra RAM and the 20
gig HD myself uh, maybe that¹s why I¹m having problems?!) and would like
to avoid the scary repair prospects here... Suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Memory Cache Problems

Unfortunately, your cache is blown, and likely your processor chip as well..
Ouch... But that's the ugly...

Don't feel bad-it's the most common issue with that processor--the cache
error. Pretty unlikely that you caused it (though perhaps that beer in the
keyboard didn't help things!).
