I've paid $1100 for a 400 MHz about 6 months ago, with only 64 MB RAM, 20 GB
hard disk, DVD, one battery and the adapter. However, it did come with
AppleCare that is good until December 2003. I thought I would pay slightly
more and have the protection of AppleCare...

Pricing help

2002-10-16 Thread Joseph Ferrare

I'm considering selling my Powerbook, but am completely out of my
depth trying to establish a fair asking price. It's in very good
condition, but since my move back stateside, I simply don't have the
travel schedule I used to, and it hasn't moved off the desk twice in
the last year.

The 'Book:

Pismo 500 Mhz
1 Gig RAM
32 Gig HD (5400 rpm Travelstar)
DVD
250 Zip expansion bay drive
original disks.

Haven't gone on battery power in months, but it was fine when last I
did. I'd no doubt include a few laptop-specific accessories: a leather
brief case, leather screen protector, Cool Pad and the air/auto power
adapter. I have some software to include, but it's mostly older OS 9
stuff -- Conflict Catcher, Nisus Writer, Word Perfect.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Maybe this works:
Go into OS 9 and delete the monitor preference
reboot into jaguar and reset your monitor preferences.
lock the preference file (get info) and this will stop happening.

Every once in a while when I start up my Wallstreet running 10.2 my

rarely boot into 9 anymore. Wondering if anyone has a solution or if there's

if you pay them the $50 and it winds up being a warranty issue, they

Clean install installs a completely new System folder, and transfers
user and permissions information to the new system, so that you can log
in and see your own stuff again. It will replace applications that are
included in the install, and leave along applications which arent'.

This is even doable by hand with a lot of NetInfo skullduggery.

Those should be in *your* users's Library folder, not to be comfused
with the System Library folder.

  Maybe also some fonts.

Fonts are in either your Fonts folder or the System fonts folder.

Why do you say your system is buggy? This is the first line of
attack...if you log on as a different user, do you have the same
problems? If not, the prolems lie in your user preferences files, not in
the system.

I know that OSX can set aside your old system folder on an

For example, I would love to transfer my ViaVoice files to

BUT OSX is so complicated and there are so many invisible files i
don't know how to do this. Carbon Cloner clones your system

BAD Apples

2002-10-16 Thread Clyde Kahrl

I have a refurbished 550 Ti-Book purchased late March 2002.
Warranty and support are for 1 year.
My ethernet port has never worked as well as I thought it
should in loggin in, etc.
In May, It stopped working with one of my 10/100 switches. in
June it stopped working with my Farrallon 10/100 switch at home (it
would light the light on the switch and say that it was connected but
the TCP-IP Number would change every 5-15 seconds). It would not
work with my skynet switch, my linksys router, my old assante router
and my brand new assante router. It would only work on the 10B-T
ports of my Asante switch--not the 10/100 ports. Apple has
consistently given me the run around on this.
Finally, three weeks ago, my port quit entirely. Apple
refused to talk to me. Apple claimed that my machine was not
registered even though I can go online and find service notes on my
Ti-book. They claimed that only one of the 4 macs that I have
purchased in the last 4 years was registered. AND THIS IS SO even
though I purchased it at the apple store !!! and I have actually
purchased OSX and so forth!!
Apple said that even though I might have a warranty claim I
had to pay them $50 to look at it. They denied that I was entitled
to 1 year support for my refurbished book.
So I paid them $400 for Applecare.
They fixed it, and it is clear that the ethernet never worked
right in the first place. It logs on great now.
As a further matter, my internal drive got all screwed up,
because while I was trying to back up by way of the IR port, I
booted in OS 9 and the system froze. I could only get it restarted
with the interrupt button which screws up the date and time--my
folders and files got screwed up dates (I don't know why) and now my
files are a mess.
Being a lawyer, I figure I'll sue them if I have some free
time. I should never have had to had the port go out altogether
anyway.
As an aside, my Lombard had the same thing happen to
it---later. It happened when I plugged it into the power while it
was on the network. The Lombard's ethernet was gradually going bad
also. I replaced that ethernet with an Assante card. Wow, what a
difference.
I have always believed that Apple's built in ethernet was a
strength, but based upon my experiences (I also had a PM7300 whose
ethernet gradually went bad and then died--and it was not just the
10B-T that died, the AAUI went bad simultaneously -- the ethernet
will log on when it is cold--but when it gets just slightly warm it
goes dead.) Without ethernet your modern Mac (or pc) is in serious
trouble. IR is useless. Target firewire is pretty good. 10B-T is
really slow for serious file transfers now that OSX has added so many
files.

OSX 10.2 Install

2002-10-16 Thread Clyde Kahrl

WARNING ! WARNING !
I proceeded to install OSX 10.2 on an external firewire
drive. The external drive had 3 partitions. The internal drive of
the FlowPow iMac had three partitions and was running OSX 10.2.
I selected the option in OSX that provides for complete
erasure of the old system before installing.
The install disk rebooted from the CD EVEN THOUGH THAT
WAS NOT NECESSARY --- because the internal drive was already 10.2 and
I only wanted to upgrade the external disk.
The install disk---WIPED OUT MY ENTIRE INTERNAL Drive BOOT
PARTITION
Even though it only installed 10.2 on the external drive
--and it did not touch any of the other partitions, it wiped out the
entire 10.2 internal partition and did not install anything on it =.
Furthermore, It reformatted the 10.2 partition with the old
HFS formatting!?! I tried everything (New Norton, Old Norton,
Diskwarriors ) to find anything on this partition and it was so
completely wiped I couldn't recover a single file. And then I had to
completely reformat the partition to install system 10.2 all over
again !?!
THIS IS A HUGE and SERIOUS INSTALLATION BUG.
THE LESSONS:
1) if you want to do a clean install---do it cleaning manually.
2) Use extreme caution installing 10.2 one computers with
multiple disks.

IBM Disks; FW enclosures

2002-10-16 Thread Clyde Kahrl

Wtih regard to FWire enclosures I have one of the $60 OWC
2.5" disk enclosures and it is the coolest thing. It seems to work
fine. It is a cinch to swap disks in and out.

With regard to my 40G IBM TRavelstar I bought 3 weeks ago.
After a long process in which I transferred my files etc from my
original internal Ti-Book 20G drive (which is also a travelstar) by
way of my OWC firewire enclosure, I got the new travelstar up and
running. It was very fast and quiet for several days. I walked away
from it at 3PM Friday, and when I woke up the computer at 5PM it made
unbeleivably horrible noises--indicating its dead nature.
I called OWC on Monday morning, & they were to send a new
one. It apparently didn't get done because on Wednesday I called
again and only then it got done and I got it Friday. However, give
them credit for sending it before they received my old drive back
again. So now the new one is in the Ti-book and we'll see how it
works. Right now it is working great. It seems very fast and it is
so quiet I have reached to restart the computer and found that only
the moniter was asleep.
As an aside, I purchased a 40G IBM Deskstar for my
secretary's cube a year ago and the exact same thing happened---It
died in the first week. And again, it got immediately replaced and
has run great since. (It is so important to have a quiet drive on a
Cube).

just drag Script Menu.menu to your menu bar and let go when all the
icons rearrange to where you want them.

Re: Jaguar mail question

2002-10-16 Thread John Slavin

Well, you're right Jeremy. Now here's the strange part. I swear that
Applescript icon wasn't in my finder menu. I went to the preferences
to see if I could add it. That didn't work. So then I thought that
perhaps it was an application and maybe the setting to add the icon was
in the application, so I looked in the application folder and found the
Script Editor application together with a folder called "Script
menu.menu" The script editor didn't have any settings for adding it,
(there are preferences, but it was greyed out), so I tried to open
script menu.menu, but there wasn't anything in it, but the description
says it's a menuextra plugin. So I think I'll go find the folder
called menuextra plugins and put a copy in there. But I can't find it
using "find". But mysteriously, when I close the window, the script
icon is now in my menu bar. WHAT is going on here. Incidentally, the
script for removing the outgoing mail servers is in fact there and when
I ran it, I could get rid of two servers that I couldn't delete when I
launched it from scripts. Weird stuff. I think it would be better
though it the access to scripts were in the mail application. It would
make more sense that having to go back to the finder.

Speaking of menu icons, I also wanted to point out that Jaguar adds
another feature I've never seen documented. There is now an icon for PC
cards in the menu bar. When you pull it down your inserted cards
appear and you can software eject them from there. Up till now, you've
only been able to use the hardware buttons. I never could remember
which was which and would end up ejecting the wrong card.

there's an applescript included with Jaguar that handles this. Look in
/Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts/ for a script called "Manage SMTP
Servers". Run that it'll let you delete old ones.

Jaguar mail question

2002-10-16 Thread John Slavin

Thought I'd report that I'm using Jaguar on my Wallstreet 233. I don't
do any fancy video stuff on it, but for basic computer use, it's just
fine.

But here's my question. Jaguar has a big improvement for me. Previous
version of OSX would only let you set one outgoing mail server, so
every time I went from home to work or viceversa, I'd have to go into
the mail preferences and change the out going server. Jaguar stores
the previous servers you have used and if you send mail with the wrong
one, a pop of window will appear and the using a pull down menu you can
pick the right server. Much better. However, over time I've use a
bunch of different servers (or more accurately variations of the same
server) and I'd like to delete all but the two I use (home and work).
But I can't figure out how to do that, or where the preference file is
located. Can anyone help?

Is this true, that the Pismo runs cooler WITH the G4 500 upgrade? Wow,
that's cool news...(...sorry). Seriously, my G3 400 is quite the little
upside-down hot plate at times (although I must agree that it never has any
problems). I was hesitating to consider upgrading to the G4, as I feared it
would make things hotter... but if it actually makes things COOLer...(!)

Any other list members have experiences with heat comparisons after
upgrading to the G4 500..? Thanks, all.

I don't remember seeing many Lombards having this problem, but the
generation before, the Wallstreet and PDQ, were notorious for this problem.
I think it was in part because Apple decided in the manufacturing to use
very cheap metal pot to make the hinges, so it wasn't surprising that so
many of them were breaking, usually after the standard 1 year warranty was
over...
