Re: Pismo acting a little on the lazy side

2002-11-06 Thread Bonnie Mellott
Well, I feel silly now. I just discovered that the
cord coming out of the power brick is starting to
break in half. I fumbled with it some and taped it
together, which cured my problem. Thanks for the
advice everyone, I'm going to pick up a replacement
adapter tomorrow.

Re: Pismo acting a little on the lazy side

2002-11-06 Thread Joe Ellis
I suspect your problem is your battery, you said it was fully discharged;
the Pismo will do strange things with a bad battery. If it's fully
discharged and going to sleep you may also be discharging the PRAM battery
to a point where it won't support sleep mode.

Bluechip Pismo upgrade rocks

2002-11-06 Thread Hal
I just got my Pismo back from Powerlogix today. The G4 upgrade rocks. I
posted a full review to the CPU upgrades database on xlr8yourmac.com,
if anyone wants to read it. So far, so good. It's noticeably faster
than the G3/400 it replaced.

Total turnaround time was 10 days, so they came through on their
promise. If anyone's considering the upgrade, I give it a 10 out of 10.

cheers,
-Hal

What's more, I think the older card can be upgraded to 128-bit WEP if
you update it with the newest Airport software.

Is that right?

That's because the Wallstreet doesn't have OpenFirmware.

In my opinion and in my experience there is really only one
best way. That is to save everything you need, Zap the PRAM, start
the computer from the OS 9.1 CD, go to drive setup, wipe the drive
clean (Write Zeros and low level format if you can) and install OS
9.1 on a newly formatted hard drive. I even format the hard drives
that don't have an operating system on them. When I put a new
operating system on a computer it goes on a completely clean system.

If you want a method that always works, this is the one.

The Wallstreet doesn't support the Startup Manager (or is it the other way

Good last suggestion of the proposed ones because that doesn't always work.
Sometimes, the installer will start complaining about installing an older
version of some element over a newer version. For dozens and dozens of
files, that might be burdensome, this if the installer gives you the ability
to replace the newer with the older.

This is just very crude advise and I hope more sophisticed explanations from
more experienced user will come forward (I am working exclusively with OS X
since it was in Public Beta, well almost in the first half year) but here is
a start:

Save your data, and preferences and do a clean install.
Second best: save your data, rename your System Folder, install without
wiping the disk
Third best save your data, boot from OS9 disk and just install and hopefully
all files will be replaced by the OS 9.1 versions.

I can add that my Pismo has died like that overnight a couple of times,
while there was still charge in the battery. I woke up in the morning,
tried to wake up my Pismo and it was out for the count. Pressing the

Re: Pismo Display

2002-11-06 Thread Richard Smykla
Hi, Carlos,

I recently replaced the broken display in my Lombard with a Pismo
screen - the inverse to your problem. No problems noted here, but
you'll have to be careful of the built-in airport antenna on your
Pismo. I've seen some warnings about the screen from a Pismo not
lasting as long in a Lombard due to (I think) the way the cables are
threaded through the clutches. Just be careful, and I think it will
work for you. Also, you'll probably want to also get the original
foam support for the display you're taking from the Lombard - it may
not have the same cutout areas as your original. I'd suggest (if you
don't already have one) picking up the Pismo service manual in pdf
format. Very good, concise instructions for every possible part
replacement operation. Email me off-list if you need more specifics.

Thanks. I already tried that. The strange thing is that holding down the
option key has no effect on the startup procedure. The Wallstreet proceeds
to boot up with Jaguar regardless...I don't even get to choose the startup
drive.

Hold down the "option" key as the system starts up. It will then search
for all bootable drives, regardless of OS and give you the chance to
choose which one to boot into.

Jaguar reluctant to go back...

2002-11-06 Thread Heok Hee Ng
Hi Listers,

I just installed Jaguar in my Wallstreet today and am faced with
the problem that my Wallstreet is now reluctant to boot up using OS
9.2.2. The Jaguar is on the first 7 GB of my 25 GB hard drive, and OS
9.2.2 on the second 7 GB. Whenever I change the startup drive to the
partition with OS 9.2.2, the Wallstreet insists on booting up using
Jaguar, this despite my trying to lock the second (OS 9.2.2) partition
as the startup drive.
Anyone knows how to work around this problem? I don't really
need to run OS 9.2.2 at the moment, but I need to transfer data from my
desktop (a 7500/G3 running OS 9.1) to the Wallstreet via Appletalk. I
could always burn the data on to a CD and then transfer to the
Wallstreet, but I don't really want to waste the time and the CD doing
so (burner in the 7500/G3 is extremely slow).

Pismo acting a little on the lazy side

2002-11-06 Thread Bonnie Mellott
Hi everyone,
Today I was attempting to use my Pismo
(500/256mb/20gb/Jaguar) and it took me a really long
time to get the computer to turn on.

I pressed the power button about a million times. I
pressed it and held it down for a few seconds. I
pressed the reset button in the back. Finally, after
5 minutes or so of pressing the power button it came
on.

I have experienced this problem once or twice before,
but it has never been this severe. Usually pressing
power a couple times will do the trick.

Anyway, there's more. I figure it was about 1:30 when
I got it to turn on. I worked on it for a couple
hours, left for a couple hours, and came back and
worked some more. It's 7:30 now. A few minutes ago,
I was using the pismo and it just went to sleep out of
the blue. It refuses to wake up, restart or turn off.
It is still plugged into the wall. By the way, my
battery is no good at all anymore.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this and/or
knows what I could do to keep this from happening.

Thanks,
Bonnie

CONTINUE THE FLOGGING!! Re: My Wallstreet DOES wake when lid is opened

2002-11-06 Thread DavidWedge
Despite all the naysayers', this is correct. SOME Wallstreets DO wake when
openned. Screw the "original instructions" - they'll also tell you that the
max RAM a Pismo can take is 512mb. My first Wallstreet (a 292mhz) woke
whenever opened, and I've had several others since then that did the same..
Didn't see anything different--though it's probably just a slight change in
the PMU board that does it..

Re: Internet explorer 5.1 problem

2002-11-06 Thread BGbytes
Hi Sue & John:

I use IE 5.1.6 (the newest as far as I know), on this WS 266/192/6 using OS
9.2.2, along with OE 5.0.6. The only IE does to me is it will "disappear"
out of the blue now and then, and the Finder says, Error 2 (memory I
think?). The prior versions did the same thing. OE, however, works fine.

The only question I have about "other" browsers (and I did in the past
download and try iCab and Mozilla which kept crashing on me -- never tried
Netscape yet) is:

Do any of these other browsers and their email-counterparts have a
tool/option to "Insert Explorer [or whichever brower] Address" into the
email? I use that option ALL the time since I am always copying stuff from
the net and I click "Insert Explorer Address" and it puts the hyperlink into
the email. I can't live without that!

Thanks!
Gail

Sue,

One critical point I didn't see mentioned was the OS you're running.

I use Netscape Communicator 7.0 for OS X. I recently switched from

Java or Javascript, like Yahoo! Chats. They now run flawlessly in
Netscape 7.

I would HIGHLY recommend switching to this newest member of the Netscape

graphic intensive websites faster. Give it a try before ruling it out.
If you have any additional questions, please feel free to email me

I've recently switched my entire outlook on the concept of personal

I'm sorry, but you are WRONG. And I have a Wallstreet II (233). My

lid ALL THE TIME. I don't care what the instructions say, it wakes up

You could check in IE preferences, under "Interface Extras" to see if
"Enable Quartz Smoothing" is enabled or not. It is enabled for me on my
Pismo and I don't have any problem in Explorer.

Another question: would you have installed "Silk" by any chance?

IE5 text looks like Woodstock gibberish

2002-11-06 Thread Mark
Since upgrading to Jaguar (on my 500MHz iBook), random lines of text in
Internet Explorer 5 looks like Woodstock gibberish (the bird in the Peanuts
comic strip). The text in a number of paragraphs looks like a bunch of cap &
lower case vertical lines, instead of the correct characters. If I click on
or select the jumbled text it will clear up, but text in other areas of the
page turns to gibberish.

I had IE5.2 installed and upgraded to IE5.2.2 this morning which did not fix
the problem. I don't like anti-aliasing text, but since I can't turn it off
completely in OSX, I have it set at Medium (under System Preference;
General) and smoothing is off when below 12 points.

Any thoughts on why type is turning into Woodstock tick-marks?

Thanks!

It's also possible to have an adapter to a USB bus instead of the card.
This could be a good option cause it can be used for tother computers as
well. I have one connected to an Imac and it works well. I'm using a Linksys
wireless router and a Macwireless adapter and pc card fort a powerbook.

I believe he's referring to the AirPort card, which is the only wireless

Use the airport card. If you don't care about 128-bit WEP, look around for
the older card (40-bit WEP) and you can save yourself money. I got my older
card for $60.
