yes they will. call apple and find out before you start flat out denying
things, with such a matter-of-fact attitude. they charge 50 dollars to
transfer your data, should they need to. the other 50.00 you would be
talking about is if you are out of the phone support time period, and
find that it is in fact not a hardware issue. i just went through this
with apple 2 weeks ago.

Re: HELP!!!! PISMO DEATH???

2002-12-07 Thread dreemkill
they offered me that option as well...when i sent my ibook ini
declined...i dont keep any mission critical data on my laptopdoesn't
seem worth it, i'd probably end up formatting it within a month anyway.
what they WERE going to do, was hold CC # for 50.00, to do the phone
trouble shooting...because its out of the 90 days.but i called em
back, and told them "its a hardware problem. the display shuts on and
off, and if i shake the screen, it turns back on." she said the name of
the procedure, but its actually a practiced thing...they can skip the 50
dollar retainer, and just call it a hardware issue, and send the
box...which is what we did.

got it back, and the mouse was finicky... apple replaced the inverter
board, and the motherboard... i thought they didnt connect the mouse
cable up well when they replaced the logic board, but he did some
trouble shooting with me anyway (tho not supposed to i think) and ended
up resetting the pmu, and i was set.

not really specific to the pismo, but i thought i'd share my experience.
they didnt have to move data anyway.

10.2 will work with any hardware that 10.1 did, however you do not get
the Quartz Extreme enhancement with cards that have <16mb of vram. On
that note, the iBook's Video card cannot be replaced, leaving you the
only option of upgrading your iBook to a newer revision if you want QE

I'm an Apple Service Tech. They will not take care of your data. Period.
I used to work at Apple, *and* at an Authorized service shop. Unless this
is a new development...like it was changed *this week* or something.

Jeremy, have you ever heard of this policy?

Another thing. You state that it is covered under Applecare? Do you just
mean that it is still in it's one year hardware warranty period, or that you
purchased an APP for it? If you have not spent the extra $350 to purchase
Applecare I HIGHLY recommend that you do so...especially since you are
having problems now. It will protect you in the future. But judging that
this is a Pismo you must've purchased an APP since it is already probably
about 2 years old??? I missed that part.

OT: BBedit anyone?

2002-12-07 Thread Donald Keenan
Could anyone help me out here? I've had a rough day going back and forth
between Dreamweaver and HTML-Kit to clean up the mess that Dreamweaver
and it's IE preview created to the markup.
So, back at home (Pismo/iMac-land), I tried to install a trial version
of BBEdit.
This is a no brainer, but I'm feeling like I have no brains lately
(techno-stress).
The disk image appears on my hard drive and when I drag it to the
Applications folder (OS X) and click on it to launch it, a window opens
with a message that tells me to eject the disk image to complete
installation. I'm not sure what that means to literally do. I tried
going to the finder menu and choosing eject, but then there's a message
about the alias being broken.
Ca anyone familiar with installing BBEdit explain to me what I have to
do after dragging it into the Applications folder?
TIA,
Donald

Do you have the stock Ram that came with the book? Replace BOTH of the
SoDimms with the stock Ram and be sure the processor is seated properly. I

Not to make you more upset, but that is *not* why Apple asked for a CC#.
They will take absolutely NO responsibility for your data, and will not
transfer it anywhere. The $50 is in case they find that it is not an error

Will it boot from your OS 9 cd? I noticed that you didn't list that in
things you'd tried.

Other than that, I can't think of anything that it might be but a
hardware problem...

Do you run a lot of highly intense apps? Your processor might not have
liked the heat from that and the gig of ram. Could be an error in the
ide controller. Your tech is probably correct, the motherboard may be
history... Any electrical spikes via power or phone that could've
gotten to the PB?

Yep, Pulled the top 512 chip..no joy!! :( Apple wanted a CC # to hold $50
in case they had to transfer the data to a different HD during the repair.

Well, Apple will probably tell you that 1GB of ram is an unsupported
configuration and that your ram might be drawing too much power. Have
you tried pulling one of your ram modules and restarting?

Just a thought...

Wallstreet "teardown" site now online

2002-12-07 Thread B . J . Major
For those who did not have the benefit of getting Apple's Service Manual
download while it was still online a year or more ago, there is now a
site (in English and German) with excellent photos to show you how to
take your Wallstreet II apart if needed. Here is the URL:

http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum3.html

This is a handy reference to have; bookmark it - or better yet, print it
out for youself!!

Stupid Question #304: What version of Appleworks 6 are you using?
Could that be part of the problem?

I know there was a 6.0.4 and a 6.1 and perhaps a 6.2 and 6.2.4.

Well, if you did reinstall over your previous installation, whatever caused
the problem is probably still there, whether it is a corrupted preference
file or a conflicting extension. If it was me, I would reinstall OS 9 but I
would make sure to do a clean install. I don't remember exactly, but I think
there is an option in the installation process where you have the ability to
select a clean installation. Your previous system folder is still there, but
it's inactive. That way, you can test after a clean install and then, bring
back any preference file you might need, with careful checking after each
file you bring back from your old system folder. That's what I do when I
need to do an OS install.

When reinstalling OS 9, did you do it from scratch or did you reinstall over
the current installation? Did you reinstall any non-Apple extensions after
reinstalling the OS or did you keep it clean? After reinstallation, did you
restore any saved preferences that you had for AppleWorks?

If you answer yes, no and yes, then I would suggest you restart with the
shift key down to boot without loading any extension. Then, go to the
Preferences folder in the System Folder and remove any AppleWorks-related
file or folder there. In the System Folder, check to see if there would be
an AppleWorks-related folder.

Let us know how it goes...

Current OS on early G3's [was: Need help]

It's not just OS X... Some of the early G3's will not recognize any
system folder as being valid (i.e., bootable) unless it resides on a
partition that is wholly within the first 8 GB of the hard drive. You
can have 16 bootable partitions on a drive if you want, but all need to
be within the 8 GB on these machines. If your drive is larger than 8
GB, then you need to have at least two partitions, one of which (the
one you want to start-up from) resides wholly within the first 8 GB. A
system folder on any partition that strays beyond the first 8 GB of a
hard drive will not be bootable on these particular early G3's -- it
may be recognized, it may appear to be "blessed", but it will not start
your machine.

The OS X installer is "smart" enough to check this, and won't install
if it thinks the installation won't be bootable. The OS-9 installer
does not make such a check.

Re: Need help

2002-12-07 Thread Administrator
Gary,

On the older G3's you have to partition into 2 seperate partitions. OS
X will only install on the first 8 gig of the HD. Sooo.. Create 1,
7.9 gig partition and then the rest in another.

Mom on confirmation requests, SpamCop, servers

2002-12-07 Thread Dan Knight
This is my monthly reminder that the list server at maclaunch.com remains
screwed up and often sends out spurious confirmation messages. There is
nothing we can do about this at present.

Please don't send me email asking about it. I can't fix it. I can't.

We are also having some problems with the lemlists.com domain, which we
had set up to handle the mailing lists. Without our knowledge or
permission, the people running the server have begun using SpamCop to
filter incoming email. We find this unacceptable, as people we do
business with are now unable to contact us via email. We are looking into
alternate hosting solutions for our domains.

For most of our domains, we have a huge variety of hosting options at
$10/month or so, but we want to be able to offer low-cost email accounts
on lemlists.com -- and email plus Web/file storage space on
lowendmac.net. If any of you can suggest a good hosting service that will
let us sell email addresses at reasonable annual rates, sell online space
to users, etc., I'd be happy to hear more -- please reply to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (If that doesn't work due to SpamCop, try
[EMAIL PROTECTED])

BeerBooks, Insurance, and List Nannies

2002-12-07 Thread Dan Knight

The function of the list nannies is to oversee the lists and try to keep
things on topic, to keep things civil, and to ban subscribers as
necessary (short-term or permanently) for serious violations of
netiquette and/or list rules.

The nannies are also active members of the lists and entitled to share
their opinions, just like the rest of the subscribers. We try to have 2-3
nannies for each list in addition to the list mom so that the nannies can
moderate each other as well.

Kyle raised questions about the ethics of an insurance claim, which lead
to a sometimes heated, sometimes enlightening discussion of the various
types of insurance policies, the cost of insurance fraud to consumers,
and several other topics.

You have done your own bit to escalate things, so please don't be so
sanctimonious in your postings.

Thank you.

Dan the listmom, catching up on email
