New Info

2003-01-22 Thread Mark Loeffler
Comments on Why 1x vs 2x DVD-R Burn Speeds in PowerBook G4 Superdrives
- (from a reader email)

"Regarding the superdrive change to 1x from 2x on the powerbook (G4 17"
drive specs change noted recently).
One of my friends works as an intern at apple in the Mass Storage SQA
division and he was testing the superdrive last year in the titanium
powerbooks. The 1x limitation is done in the firmware. The drives
themselves are capable of 2x. The limitation was done because at 2x the
drives were very susceptible to bumps and thus many coasters would be
made at 2x. At 1x there was little or no problems even when walking
around the building carrying the powerbook while it is burning. I'm
sure in the near future someone will have a modified version of the
firmware to make it burn at 2x again.
-daniel"

I had also wondered if the rates were limited to 1x for reliability
reasons but I was thinking about heat inside the slim case (the higher
the burn speed, the higher power the laser usually. Even the desktop 2x
drives had a fan in the drive housing, so I wondered if 2x rates in a
much hotter enclosure like the PB G4 would affect long-term reliability
of the drive.

If you were lucky enough to have bought your Pismo "new", you probably
have AppleCare (3 years of peace of mind).
Call them and most likely, they'll replace the battery.

Reviving Pismo Battery?

2003-01-22 Thread Scott Crick
Hi All!

This is my first post here, so hopefully I don't break too many rules... ;-)

I have a Pismo (Rev. B)/400 that I love dearly. It has been a great computer
for the year and a half that I have owned it (purchased new right after the
first TiBooks were introduced). The computer still runs like a champ and I
am really enjoying Mac OS X 10.2.3 on it.

I have, however, run into a problem that I hoped wouldn't surface so soon.
My battery life is going down the proverbial toilet. A few months ago, I
could get 2-2.5" hours of battery life during pretty heavy usage
(web-browsing over Airport, checking e-mail, running several applications at
once including some development environments and graphics apps).

Now, however, I'm lucky to get 45 minutes out of a full battery.

Although I'm afraid I may be out of luck, my hope is that this might be
something correctable. I remember that my PowerBook 1400 could run a utility
from Apple called "Battery Reset" that would force the battery to completely
discharge and then charge again. This had the effect of removing the battery
"memory" effect that could cause lower battery-life.

I was hoping that something similar existed for the Pismo. However, I have
been unable to find anything similar to this at all. Am I out of luck? Am I
stuck attached to the cord until I can afford a hundred dollars and change
for a new battery?

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you for hearing me out!

Sincerely,

Scott

I just got the CompUSA USB 2.0 pcmcia card - works fine under 9.2.2 with USB
support installed, and a floppy contains X drivers, but currently, no
PowerBook supports USB 2.0. I haven't slept it with the card in the PB (a

CD-ROM Expansion Bay Problems.

2003-01-22 Thread icarus
Hello all this will be my first post here, and I've been having
problems with my Lombard's CD-ROM Expansion Bay:

My PowerBook's 24x CD-ROM expansion bay module when running under Mac
OS X, is limited to a collection of previously burned CDs, i.e. The
CD-ROM drive appears to not be able to read CDs that were previously
able to be read flawlessly under older versions.. 10.1, 10.0 and Mac OS
9. Maybe lost support somewhere?

The CDs tested are working properly, when used in an external drive -
in my case Yamaha SCSI 8424S CDRW, the disks mount properly and doesn't
exhibit the problems like it did when used in the expansion bay. When
running Mac OS 9 (9.2.2) all disks are properly mounted, this is booted
under Mac OS 9 not under the classic environment. All disks were
burned using Toast Titanium in Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X, all were HFS+/HFS
type hybrid. The same occurs when a disk is burned using Nero on
Windows 2000 with ISO9660 disk type is selected. Of course mounting in
windows the CDs work as well.

Note: Prior to Mac OS 10.2, the expansion bay cd-rom module worked
flawlessly as well as it did in Mac OS 9. But now feature and
performance wise in terms of Mac OS X 10.2 it is very poor, but it is
still commendable in Mac OS 9.

The finder complains in that it cannot find any mountable disks, and
results in an option of ignoring or ejecting the offending disk. At
times when a disk does load, the performance is extremely sluggish -
the disk would spin-up and spin down indefinitely which usually results
in a spinning cursor, which would require either a log out or reboot,
the latter being the more successful.

The CDs that are most successful at mounting are the Commercially
printed ones, I don't think its the CDRs that I buy since under Mac OS
9 they all load fine using the Expansion bay, its just Mac OS X - its
being finicky.

I was wondering if anyone has had this happened to their G3 PowerBooks?
and probably give me some help in fixing the problem apart from
reinstalling OS X all over again.

- ica.

Re: Changed Stat's

2003-01-22 Thread David M. Ensteness
They did "officially" say it by updating their specs that are available
to the public. Had they shipped one with one set of specs and then
changed it that would be a different matter. But they constantly revise
their documentation and their hardware. Look at all the revisions of
different models, Apple never updated people to tell them that Rev 2
and later Beige G3s came with RagePro instead of Rage II+ graphics
systems.

Also, you might want to check out http://www.xlr8yourmac.com as today
they have info on their main page about this exact circumstance,
according to what Mike posted there the situation is that 2x creates
more coasters due to how sensitive it is to motion while burning. The
1x situation is a firmware change not a hardware change, the drive is a
2x.

IMHO it was likely a typo. Typos aren't always seen right away by the

You indicate that you want this for additional sockets.

Are you aware that you can add additional USB ports (sockets) with a simple
USB hub? You can get a simple 2 or 4 port unit that looks like a small
dongle, or go up to a self powered 7 port hub (self powered provides power
to devices like drives and scanners connected to the hub).

I have a 7 port self powered unit, currently connected to my kids iMac.
However when it was connected to my iBook I had no trouble with putting it
to sleep. As a matter of fact, when I put it to sleep, the activity lights
on the hub (a red/green light on each port) would go dark.

Just an option in case you hadn't considered it.

I tried that, and it seemed to help. The battery started to charge,
and I was able to run the 'book for about half an hour until it
died again with the same symptoms (fan spinning furiously, everything
else goes cold).

Right now it won't start up at all, nor is the battery being
charged, as far as I can tell.

I doubt the LaserWriter 8 driver is ever going to print to a 940c...
LaserWriter 8 is a Postscript driver, and the 940c is not PostScript
compatible.

I hear you, Stephen. I'm in the same boat with my Pismo. Still, the current
laptops have more than adequate internal video cards. Granted, older
PowerBook like Pismos, iBooks, etc., could benefit from a better video card.
However, this is a closed market, there are no more Pismo being made, and
I'm sure that there are a few that are retired every year. So, you end up
with too small of a market to be economically feasible. Plus, one of the
reason I've read that AirPort Extreme cards wouldn't be available for older
PowerBooks was that the PCMCIA bus wouldn't be able to meet the increased
requirements for speed and the amount of data to shuffle around. If you were
to make larger video card, supporting higher resolutions, or more depths,
that would mean more data to quickly move around. That too, could possibly a
dead end with a PCMCIA bus. Just a thought.

OS9 Laserwriter 8 Network Printer Driver-- Still some life left?

2003-01-22 Thread Jim
Hello,
This is a long shot, but using the Laserwriter 8 driver to print to an IP
computer has turned out to be a necessity. Finding a PPD file somewhere, I
put it in the Laserwriter 8's ppd folder. Selecting it in the Desktop
Printer Create process, it seems to be fine. But, the job goes to the
printer, and it (the HP 940c Deskjet) just spits out paper.
I take this as a good sign because that's what the CUPS application in
OSX did before I found the right hp model driver. But those open source
files are complete *drivers*, not just PPDs.
So, the question is has anyone been extremely creative with PPDs and
Laserwriter 8 Chooser driver? Or, has anyone setup IP printing with Birmy
Powerrip or Stylescript?

Thanks for any help,

Jim M.

But all laptops have non-upgradeable video cards, so Pismo owners like
myself have no way to get a 16MB video card or better. I just thought the
pcmcia slot might me able to accommodate video upgrades, which every pbook
would want eventually, I would think, (unless you buy a new one every 2 or 3

Check out Margi Systems' Display-To-Go card
(http://www.margi.com/products/prod_dtg_feat.htm). You can get one
with VGA or DVI output (adapters are available separately). 4 MB card,
supports a wide range of resolutions. I haven't tried mine with OS X
but IIRC, it worked.

YMMV. Caveat Emptor. No guarantees implied. ;^)

If you want more USB ports wouldn't it make more sense to get a USB hub?
You plug the hub into the USB port on your powerbook and plug your
peripherals into the hub. I've seen 4 port hubs for around $30, not sure
about MAC/PC or USB1/USB2.
I would love to do this but my Wallstreet doesn't have USB at all so I
have to use a card.

That's probably because the current shipping laptops have often more
powerful video cards than most desktop, so it's hard to justify making an

Pismo Ram

2003-01-22 Thread Anthony Vo
Hi Listers,
According to Apple syst. profiler: SoDimm 0/J2 SDRAM 64mb
 SoDimm 1/J2 SDRAM 256mb
Which one is in the upper slot? 64mb module?

I'm trying to replace the 64mb with the 512mb ram module (got from DMS) in my pismo.
I want to make sure it's the 64mb module in the upper position so I don't have to
uplug the processor card to replace the lower one.
Thanks
Anthony

Re: pcmica card

2003-01-22 Thread Stephen Bright
I'm wondering why nobody makes pcmcia video cards anymore. The last one I
could find was the 4MB 1x3D RoadRocket ($40 on ebay). Is there a hardware
limitation or demand limitation on producing upgraded pcmcia video cards?
Thanks,
Stephen

i'd hesitate to call it 'nasty', honestly. after all, nothing is set in
stone until the product ships.

many remember the 500MHz fiasco with the PowerMac towers. Apple shipped
the 500MHz G4's and subsequently had to rev them down to 450MHz, after
they'd already shipped the 500MHz.

there's two ways of going about some problems:
"Ship! Ship! We'll iron out the bugs after people have them in their
hands..."

or

"Oh crap, the 2x burner isn't up to snuff. Let's go back to 1x and work
on the 2x some more."

Which would you prefer?

Re: help! powerbook backlight problems

2003-01-22 Thread frank hebbert
Thanks for all the help - Apple are picking up the powerbook this week.

The backlight continued to switch off randomly, and then began to flicker
when it was on, especially when typing. It's clearly broken.

cheers

frank
