If this is an IDE drive it's easy.

You'll need an 2.5 - 3.5adapter.
In actual fact you need a laptop to standard IDE adapter. the 2.5 to
3.5 adapter only applies to hard disks. The CD-ROM end of a CD-ROM
adapter is totally different.

Anyhoo just take the drive with you, you should be ok.

Congrats on your escape from the darkside. I am not sure but you might
find the solution to your webcam problems at http://www.ioxperts.com/ .
As for a Netmeeting equivalent program you might want to check
www.download.com or www.versiontracker.com. I hope that is of some help.

OT - Sticky' Page elements on eBay?

2003-06-21 Thread Tom Burke
This is OT as strictly it has nothing to do with Macs per se at all,
but I can't think of anywhere else to ask the question. So my
apologies, and I ask for your indulgence.

I frequent eBay.co.uk. In recent months I;ve noticed a strange
phenomenom, in that it can take a very long time for a page to load. I
mean minutes. I have an ADSL cinnection, so it's not line speed, and
indeed looking at my router during most of the delay there won't be any
traffic. I get messages on the status line like this completed 1 of 4
items : 2 errors.

The bizarre thing is that this beaviour varies from week to week. Last
week, for example, the site was very responsive. Since their weekly
Friday morning maintenance shut-down, it's been like treacle.

I've tried raising the issue with eBay but with no success at all -
they won't even acknowledge it. Furthermore I'm pretty certain it's an
external issue - it's the same using both Safari IE on my PowerMac,
Safari on the Lombard, and even IE5.5 on a PC laptop.

Does anyone else see such behaviour? Anyone got any suggestions as to
why it happens? Reply off-list of you'd prefer not to take up list
bandwidth.

Titanium Buzz

2003-06-21 Thread Peter Graening
I got my new TiBook and it's absolutely amazing. I ran Xbench on my old
Pismo and on my new TiBook, and the Pismo scored 34, and the TiBook got a
whopping 87! Talk about an upgrade!

Anyhow, I am seeing, or perhaps hearing is a better word, an odd phenomenon.
The notebook has been making a very, very faint buzzing or crackling noise,
and I can't figure out where it's coming from. And even more strangely,
when I run Mac Help and run a search, it makes a very high frequency tone.
I'm somewhat disturbed by this but it appears that none if this is affecting
the Book's functionality. Has anyone else seen these problems before? I
would think it's the hard drive but I'm not very sure of that diagnosis.

Thanks,
Peter

You can try http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/ a few Creative cameras
are listed there as supported.

Smith Micro sells VideoLink Pro, which supports the H.323 standard,
which is what NetMeeting uses, iirc.

If you're running OS 9.1 or less you can re-install your OpenGL
extensions from the system CD (you may require Tome Viewer) or from
here ,http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=12

If you're running OSX re-apply the 10.2.6 combo updater. If you're
using OSX you may want to try running 'Repair Permissions' from Disk
Utility first...

You may find that 10.3 will natively support your cam them. I am hoping

OS 10.x upgrade CD advice

2003-06-21 Thread Doug Hinschberger
I'm finally considering installing OS X on my Pismo (currently at 9.2.2),
and then maybe our G3 and imac. Someone is offering to sell to me a set
of CD's that are labeled iMac on them. So I reckon they're not the
retail version, but a set that came with a purchased Mac.

Should these work fine? I've seen so many different versions listed on
ebay when I've looked that I'm a little confused as to what's what.

TIA,

RAM upgrade crashing OS X in PB Lombard

2003-06-21 Thread Michael Thompson
Hi,
I upgraded my PB G3 Lombard to 512k RAM (2x256) and now OS X crashes just as
the finder is finishing loading.

Anyone have any advice, suggestions, fixes? I've combed knowledge bases and
so far have had no luck. The RAM vendor (OWC) suggested I boot without
extensions. Clearly that tech person doesn't use OS X...

am using the third party driver from SourceForge.net.

I updated the PB software to 3.1 okay but there seems to nothing to update
the base station with. The latest firmware I have is 4.0.8.

Thanks,
Byron

gaps in frame TiPB G4

2003-06-21 Thread WNK
On a G4 Ti PB. Has anyone noticed those occasional little gaps in the
frame around the display, where the display meets the frame, when you
are looking sideways, where you can the light from the edge of the
actual monitor itself? I do not mean on the outer edge where the frame
is joined. Anyone else experiencing this or ever taken note of it? Is
it something to be concerned with or pretty normal/common occurrence on
the TiBook? I have a gap near the bottom on either side of the display
on mine. Just wondering.

Indeed it's true, Apple have been sending out cease and desist orders
all day today, due to someone leaking those pics.

Re: RAM upgrade crashing OS X in PB Lombard

Simple. Put the original RAM modules back in and see if OS X boots fine
or not. If not, OS X bits may be corrupted. If so, your new RAM module
(or one or both modules) is defective. Continue experimenting and see
what works and what doesn't, try to isolate the bad module.

No offense, but are you sure apple has been sending out cease and
desist orders? macrumors.com, what i consider to be the definitive
rumor site, still has their mirror of the pics up, and they are
normally very quick to comply with apple legal.

anyways.. we'll find out for sure on monday.

Yep, I'm sure.

MacRumors.com (of which I'm a member and completely agree with you)
don't seem to have been emailed yet, and usually they comply straight
away without CD's (ie leaker PowerMac G5 specs), but many other sites
including spymac.com have been sent them.

anyways.. we'll find out for sure on monday.

Not sure about that ... Haven't not done any webcam thing on a PC in a while
... But here my 2 cents:

I have a FW iBot cam which I got to work just nicely using iVisit and QT
broadcaster, no troubles there at all ... I am sure waiting for iChat with
webcam support ...

Now If I could only find a good website telling me how to set up the cam as
a webcam (that old style, non streaming, new pic every 10 secs), I'd be
happy ... Nowadays looking for that in google only reveals xxx stuff ..

Cheers

Have you tried looking for info like that on something like techtv.com?
I was just thinking that if you could find a site with some decent
information on it, you could bypass the xxx. Otherwise the boards at
macaddict.com have been helpful for me.

Just a thought if you havent given those a go yet.

Not if you know where to look. A quick search with Google's Mac search
engine,

http://www.google.com/mac?hl=enlr=ie=ISO-8859-
1q=webcam+netmeetingbtnG=Google+Search

brings back a bunch of links, several of which look promising, none of
which are xxx.

This one in particular looks like it might be a starting point, if you
haven't been there already:

http://netconference.about.com/cs/camsoftwaremac/

The key to using Google these days, as it becomes more and more
commercial, is learning to use the Google syntax,

http://www.google.com/apis/reference.html#2_2

to restrict and direct your search. Of course, there's also Google's
subject and country specific search engines that are well worth using.
(Especially the Mac one)
