Re: using a PowerBook Wallstreet 300 in a coffee shop?
I use a PCMCIA card with a Pismo 400 - OsX 10.2.6 the software I got from this sight. - http://wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net/ There seems to be a list specifically for this question, go here http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum=wirelessdriver-support Look here too - http://wireless-starter-kit.com/airportblog/ The base station card I use where a gift, so I would not suggest getting my sort - mostly as it has no way to install an external or booster antenna if you wanted to - NETGEAR MA 401 - 802.11b It is not perfect, but it works... If I would be buying a new card, I would get a 802.11G card with an external antenna connector - which one I am not sure on yet probably Cisco Aironet 350 Series Client Adapters - but, I have no pressure to buy a faster card yet, as my base station is also 'old style' 802.11b - when we have a bit more capital we'll get the Cisco 350 setUp at 802.11G They seem to be one of the most compatible right out of the box * Support of popular operating systems Mac OS 9.x, Mac OS X, Linux MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98/98SE, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows XP http://cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps4555/products_data_sheet09186a0080088828.html for cheaper possibilities look at - http://www.linksys.com/ They do not support Apple it seems out of the box, but I think the Linksys is on the list from the OsX wireless driver I mentioned above look here for an interesting comparison of 802.11 A vrs B vrs G http://www.linksys.com/Products/wirelessstandards.asp I did, once-upon-a-time have various PCMCIA cards running with Os9, but not all of these will work with Os9 and note this article - When Is 54 Not Equal to 54? A Look at 802.11a, b, and g Throughput by Matthew Gast, author of *802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide* 08 Aug 2003 (updated: 14 Aug 2003) Now that the 802.11g standard has been finalized, comparisons with the other standards in the 802.11 family are inevitable. One conclusion that is frequently drawn is that 802.11g offers similar speeds to 802.11a. After all, both products are advertised as having a data rate of 54 Mbps. This article develops a simple model for the maximum TCP throughput of 802.11 networks so that a comparison can move beyond a simple comparison of nominal bit rates. According to the model, 802.11g is significantly faster than 802.11b. In a network consisting only of 802.11g clients, it is even lightly faster than 802.11a. However, protection mechanisms added to 802.11g to ensure backwards compatibility with legacy 802.11b clients can cut the throughput by 50 percent or more. Re: using a PowerBook Wallstreet 300 in a coffee shop?
I finally was able to sit in my recliner with my Lombard (OS 9.2.2) on my lap, happily checking email and accessing the Internet. I downloaded the driver for my Wavelan Silver card from IOXperts and it works! I thought I would mention that they told me to disable Airport in order to use the card. I did, and it does work. BTW, I have a Linksys wireless router. Does anyone have experience with printing through this system? I suspect I'd have to have another computer networked to do it. Yes, you could get an ORiNOCO Silver or Gold card, which are basically the same than Apple own AirPort card. On OS 9, you only have to install the AirPort software and your card will be recognized as a genuine AirPort card. On OS X, you need to use 3rd party drivers. -Laurent. I concur. The ORiNOCO Silver/Gold are good cards. I use them exclusively. FWIW, though, IOXperts make drivers that will work with just about any Wi-Fi card out there. The drivers are pretty cheap (~$20, so if you find a really cheap PC card...). They make drivers for OS 9 and OS X. You'll need two seperate licenses (one per operating system), if you run both OSs. As Laurent already mentioned, the ORiNOCO cards (WaveLAN chipset) are recognized by AirPort 1.x and 2.x as AirPort PC cards. OS X (and AirPort 3.x) do NOT recognize these cards, so you'll need drivers for OS X. FWIW, the Apple AirPort card is a rebadged WaveLAN Silver... (Dan K - I still haven't played around with my AirPort card in my PC Card slot or WaveLAN card in my AirPort slot - I'll let you know if anything funny happens when I do.) Quick Intro
Hi all, I've finally joined the portable world, having purchased an 867 TiBook from the Apple refurb site. I bought mine on the day of the AluBook announcement, and other than some problems with Apple's finance department being prompt, it's been a great purchase. I upped the RAM to 512 MB as I'm too broke to max the RAM at this point. I also purchased an Airport card and a Linksys wireless router. It's priceless being able to use your computer anywhere in the house and have access to my old box and the internet. My friend just got a 15 AluBook (1.25 GHz) and other than the speed boost and back-lighted keyboard, I think I got the better machine. His is noticeably thicker and heavier. The screen does look a tad brighter, but the TiBook LCD is already a huge leap for me having used CRT's for so long. Wireless with Lombard and Silver Wavelan, wireless printing
Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2003 09:20:57 -0400 Subject: Re: using a PowerBook Wallstreet 300 in a coffee shop? From: w miller caribsea(a-t)bellsouth.net I finally was able to sit in my recliner with my Lombard (OS 9.2.2) on my lap, happily checking email and accessing the Internet. I downloaded the driver for my Wavelan Silver card from IOXperts and it works! I thought I would mention that they told me to disable Airport in order to use the card. I did, and it does work. I've had good luck using my Wavelan Silver card in my Lombard using the Apple Airport drivers (OS 9.2.2). BTW, I have a Linksys wireless router. Me too. Does anyone have experience with printing through this system? I had the powerprint setup with my wallstreet (Wavelan Silver and OS 9.2.2), I haven't set it up on the Lombard yet but I think it should work. http://www.strydent.com/strydent-software-products/powerprint-networks.html The powerprint hardware is a box that plugs into the printer (parallel port) and the network (ethernet). The software is a Powerprint printer driver for your specific printer. They have a list of the printers that they have drivers for on the website. The set-up worked nicely with my Canon BJC 4550 inkjet. I got mine from E-bay, I think it might be an orphaned product (not available new). Pismo Bluechip G3 900 Eats My Battery
I have my Bluechip G3 900MHz upgrade happily accelerating everything Mac on my Pismo and so far the performance boost is tremendous. My only complaint is battery time...before the upgrade while I was running at 400Mhz, my battery would last about 3.5 to 4 hours which is pretty good considering the age of the battery. With the upgrade in place, I am lucky now if I can get 1.5 t 2 hours, usually closer to 1.5 out of a full charge. I know I am running more than twice the CPU speed and expected a decrease in battery time, but there are folks with G3 900 iBooks who get better than 1.5 hours in their machines. I tried slowing the clock speed down, which you can do using a little application named CPU Director, but even slowing it down to 400MHz doesn't increase the battery life. Is it time to invest in a second battery to get 3 hours or is there some other way to improve the battery life? I've used Energy Saver to optimize for battery life, but this doesn't buy me too many minutes. Mark -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Pismo Bluechip G3 900 Eats My Battery
I generally see 3.5 hours on my battery running everything at full. Volume, LCD brightness, etc. I do see less if I'm burning a CD or watching a DVD. I have the 900Mhz snow iBook. I would say 1.5 hours is pretty good for upgrading that much. Without looking up the specs, I'm sure your upgraded processor pulls more wattage than the old one. Your battery was designed with the old processor in mind. Even running it at slower cycles, your probably still going to pull out more wattage than before. Re: Pismo Bluechip G3 900 Eats My Battery
It also depends on the revision of 750 is in the Bluechip versus on the original CPU card. The Powerbook G3s were pretty bad on the power-efficiency compared to the current G3 crop. Even the first-gen G4s had better power efficiency than the G3s the Lombard and Pismo came with. Re: Pismo Bluechip G3 900 Eats My Battery
Yes. Forgot to mention that. The G3 750 that's in the 900Mhz iBook is a low power version. The Powerbook G3s were pretty bad on the power-efficiency compared to the current G3 crop. Even the first-gen G4s had better power efficiency than the G3s the Lombard and Pismo came with. Re: Pismo Bluechip G3 900 Eats My Battery
Well, that I'm _not_ sure of. Newer processors are typically more efficient than older ones - for instance, many 1400/603e owners that have upgraded to G3s have reported LONGER battery lives. Reducing the processor speed back down to 400MHz ought to have a notable difference in power consumption. Here's a silly question: Are you sure it's the same battery that you sent out with the computer? Orinoco Gold
Hi all, As a new Lombard owner I have had no experience with Wi-Fi cards. The preferred card seem to be the Orinoco Gold for those of us running os 9.x. On ebay I see a plethora of Orinoco cards most are however branded with another name, are these the same cards with someone else's name on them or a different card entirely? Re: using a PowerBook Wallstreet 300 in a coffee shop?
I have a Pismo 400 with an Airport card. At home I have a Netgear wireless router. It all works like a charm at home and was very easy to set up. I was at a local coffee house on Saturday, where a friend and I were working on a project. I accidentally clicked a link on a document, and what do you know---I was online! I checked my Airport control panel and discovered that there was a wireless network there in the coffee house. It doesn't get any easier than that!
