Re: Wallstreet, pram battery, and other battery question - G-Books Digest #1580

2004-02-02 Thread JocBr8
Rodney,
the guy did agree to meet me at an Apple reseller to have a diagnostic done
on the Wallstreet he is selling.

. After I found out how much it would cost to replace the battery and pram
battery, it just wasn't making much financial sense to buy it. After all was
said and done, it would cost almost as much as an iBook (last season's model at
$699). I was only wanting to spend around $300 anyway right now.

Orinoco Gold on Lombard

2004-02-02 Thread Noel Van_Damme
I want to use the Orinoco Gold card on a Lombard with OS X (10.2.8).
Is that a good combination? Where can I find the drivers?

Thanks,

If you don't plan playing 3D games, then a Pismo with an upgrade could be
fine. I'm personally looking toward a Titanium 667 or 800. If I had the
money, then that would be the 17", no question asked!

Keep it a while longer. I would tend to agree that the Pismo is a great
machine.
My experience however covers mainly the older machines (Mac 512K, Mac
Plus, Mac II,
Mac Quadra 700, Mac Classic II, PowerMac 6100/560, Peforma 5200,
PowerBook 520,
PowerMac G3/266, Graphite iMac SE)  so maybe I am biased (partially);
but based on other reports and specifications I feel it is to soon to
bu a replacement (though if I could get a cheap backup machine I will!).

I'm hoping mine will last till a decent and affordable G5 laptop
(or something similar) appears. The Pismo was definitely ahead
of the Titanium models in features (except for the G4 chip) and none of
the iBooks really matched it either. It is amazing what a used Pismo
will
go for over here (Oz, Down Under) as one on eBay went for over A$2000
(crazy to some extent). Wish I could get even used ones as cheap as in
the USA!

Luckily, (though A$384 is somewhat pricey but OK) I could get Apple Care
renewed for another two years. I've had reasonable luck with the
occasional
repair through Apple Care. My DVD/CD drive refused to mount disks
disks reliably and I think it might have been a bad contact since if I
held
the drive in, disks would mount. I had to send just the drive module
into Apple and while it took a few weeks the first time, the second
time (same problem I guess) it only took just less than a week to
return.
I've had far more problems replacing the defectively (designed) Yo-Yo
adapters ... on my third one and I also killed one of the black brick
ones
two ... all due to inadequate design; My useage was very careful and
wear
and tear was minimal so this points to inadequate cabling and solder
strength (a weak point in the connection from the centre of the yo-yo
from the power-plug to the circuit board; makes for a spark show until
it dies).

Yeh, in the mean time just pick up another Pismo (or iBook) as a backup
machine. It sucks to be without my Pismo ... 8-)
Good Luck
Dingo.

Keep my pismo or ??

2004-02-02 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler

It still keeps up with the OS Panther runs OK. OS 9 is

I look at what Apple has come out with and so far I just don't see
what I feel is worth the price.
I do some photoshop, yes I know that would be faster, I would like to
step in to video editing and the usual a little web designing and the
usual other things we do.

I know she is getting a little long in age, but really Apple
Care just ran out on my other Pismo in May so that makes them 3 years
old. OS 10 is really the push because you need the processor and
video to speed things along. I have looked at going up to a 900
upgrade but those have had mixed results.

So I am leaning towards waiting for a next generation or
maybe even 2. Money is not the factor, but a lap top is, otherwise I
would just grab the biggest G5. It just seems that every book after
the Pismo has had problems, not all major but ones that a 3K to 4K
book should not have.

To be honest even the Pismo needed a new video card which
equal a MB to run OS 10.2.3 I gave Apple $350.00to fix the problem.
The inverter board on the other Pismo went out on 10.2.3 all within
the same month. Apple Care was nasty and said a liquid was spilled
inside the Pismo sometime in the last 6 months and wanted $1000.00 to
fix it and were very nasty right to the top of Apple Care Ms. Wells
Ya right. A $9.00 inverter board (used) fixed that.

So let the opinions roll, new- used -stay-upgrade

I found my Wallstreet in a pawn shop. It was $300 with a nice

good charge. And a working PRAM battery. They wanted $350, but we got
it at $300 with a nifty pool cue. Check the pawn shops.

I'd go for a Mac Community web site that have sell/buy pages. I've bought
several fine charging batteries holding for about 2 to 3 hours for about
$50 in places like that. At that price one could perhaps afford a dodo as
well. So a newer battery at $150-180 doesn't feel that attractive at all
to me. For the difference you could get 1 (or even 2) 256 MB chips or a
bigger hard drive.
Obviously I'd make sure the 2nd hand seller felt trustworthy and could be
made responsible for that the battery data supplied was correct. One can
normally not replace the battery pack at a reasonable price in the
Lithium-Ion batteries normally used in the wallstreets.

Here in Europe it's not hard picking up a wallstreet/266 (with an

So what is the value of these applications? If they are real, perhaps

I wouldn't count these when validating the deal.

That's what I would do. I'm not sure but I think that the main battery needs
to keep at least a little charge in order for the PRAM to recharge. If your
main battery is completely dead, then the PRAM might not recharge. Did you
get the link I posted yesterday to get a Wallstreet battery for $104?

Import Hotmail address book into Mac Mail app - advice required

2004-02-02 Thread simon goslin
G'day,

I have a PISMO running OSX 10.2.8 and I've just splashed out and bought
a .Mac email account.

I'd like to somehow import my address list from Hotmail into my .Mac
account and kill off the MS spam generator once and for all.

I noticed in Mac Address Book that you can import vCards and LDIF (?)...

How do I go out doing this as I've several hundred address and
inputting them one-by-one would take rather along time, me thinks.

Has anyone done this and if so, how?

Cheers,

Simon

[OT] Re: Taxing times

2004-02-02 Thread Michael Levin
I ran both on Macintosh; Tax Cut for TY 2001 and Turbo Tax for TY 2002. I
prefer Turbo Tax, because the interview feature seemed better than Tax Cut.
I also prefer TT for the New York state return, which is one of the most
complicated returns.

Others will like Tax Cut, personal preference.

Many years ago, I worked for a small accounting firm that handled retail tax
returns. We did batch returns for about 25 prepares in the Deep South.
Occasionally, I would pick up a missed tax break, or a better deduction. 99%
of the returns, though, were typing them in on the PC and transmitting them
to the IRS.

People, save yourself the money. Buy a tax program!

2004-02-02 Thread Steve Fuller
TurboTax [formerly MacinTax years ago] by Intuit and TaxCut [by a
company whose name I don't recall] are both available. I know that
TurboTax runs in 9 still, I don't know if TaxCut is OS X only or not.
TurboTax also has a web option available that worked fine for me under
OS X and Safari. I would assume that it would work fine for OS 9 with
IE or Netscape as well. I filed mine that way last year and it was
quite handy. This year, it pulled in all of my information I needed
from last year's return automatically. All of the web traffic is
encrypted.

Re: Wallstreet, pram battery, and other battery question

2004-02-02 Thread Jeff Hubatka
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sun, 1 Feb 2004 19:36:02 EST
Subject: Wallstreet, pram battery, and other battery question
Ok, I test drove the Wall street PowerBook that is for sale for $200
today.
The date and time is not holding, so I assume it needs a Pram battery.
The guy told me laptop don't have a PRAM battery. Is that true? If it
does
have a PRAM battery, I need a webpage for PRAM batteries with prices.
Apple laptops have PRAM batteries, so yes this one is probably dead.

Also, it has a SCSI adapter since the SCSI port on the Wall street is
nonstandard. His adapter looks like a pin is missing. He said it came
looking like
that. He did not have a SCSI peripheral to demo the adapter.
The standard Powerbook SCSI adapter has only 29 pins. A 30-pin adapter
would be used for setting up the 'book in SCSI Disk Mode. Some adapters
have a switch to allow both uses.

When he did a demo on the internal zip drive, he just opened the ZIP
Tools
disc window and commented on the loud sound of the ZIP drive. It
sounds like my
old ZIP, but I'm remembering that some ZIPs were recalled due to
chatter
problem and for ruining zip discs.
I don't know if he had a recalled zip drive.

Then, when he unplugged the laptop from the wall, it died. He finally
confessed that the battery was not holding a charge.
So I need a website for a battery and the price.
Be prepared for sticker shock, as batteries are close to $150.
http://www.batterytech.com/

I went to the webpage that a nice list person sent me today. It says
that
this model usually goes for $500- $700. So, I'm a little nervous about
the low
price. I asked him to meet me at a Mac place to have it checked over
next week.
I have a gift certificate to that store from my User group. I told him
I'd
apply my $50 gift cert toward the inspection of the laptop. Maybe
that was too
generous on my part.
Wallstreets don't go for that much these days. eBay is probably a
better indicator of value now. If you're looking for something mobile,
know that you'll be spending another couple hundred right away to get
the batteries replaced. If you're just looking for something to put on
a desktop, you can leave it plugged in and not worry about the
batteries for a while.

He is giving me several licensed software programs that I need, but I
need to
iron out these other issues. He seemed a bit too attached to receiving
the
$200 right away.

Any help and info regarding these issues would me appreciated. Wow,
this is
like buying a used car.

Jocelyn

Ext Firewire HD mounts in OS 9 not OS X

2004-02-02 Thread chueewowee
Hi,

I've just bought an external 120 GB Hard Disk. It mounts in OS9 but not in
OSX 10.28 or OSX 10.2 (a clean install).

It has two partitions.

I have got it to mount in OSX but unreliably, and then dropping one volume
shortly after. Now not at all.

I checked the volume structure in OS 9 with Tech tool. Ok.
I reset the PRAM.
I tried to reset the Open Firmware, (option-Command F + O), but this only
restarts me in OS 9.

Can you give me any advice, please?

bye, John plum

PC vs Mac "debates" have got to go

list, I'm unsubscribing.

Robin, if you're not here to give and receive help on software and
hardware issues related to Mac portables, then I suggest you unsubscribe
pronto. There are other mailing lists where your kind of themes are more
welcome. Why not change venue instead of enforcing your disappoin tments

I've never had this kind if sleep problem in the Wallstreet nor in the
PDQ, so I doubt is a universal problem. Only major problem I've had
related to sleep is that under OS X, if the machine was suddenly turned
off while in sleep, like if the battery ran out, the display backlighting
is turned off during upstart or after have been put to sleep. Only way I
know of permanently fixing this is rebooting into OS 9.

Yeah, I'd be nervous if the seller is in such a hurry.

Sometimes the PRAM battery runs down and won't power the PRAM/clock.
In some cases the battery will recharge if the computer is left
plugged in overnight.

The guy told me laptop don't have a PRAM battery. Is that true? If it does

It does have a PRAM battery. It's a rechargeable battery but it can
eventually fail. It's harder to replace than a PRAM battery on a
desktop machine.

Also, it has a SCSI adapter since the SCSI port on the Wall street is
nonstandard. His adapter looks like a pin is missing. He said it

It's a standard PowerPook SCSI port. The missing pin is normal.
Adapters with all the pins let you attach the Powerbook to another
computer as a disk drive.

When he did a demo on the internal zip drive, he just opened the ZIP Tools

ZIP disk drive chatter can be a bad drive or a bad disk, it's
actually sign of one of several problems.

Then, when he unplugged the laptop from the wall, it died. He finally
confessed that the battery was not holding a charge.
So I need a website for a battery and the price.
Batteries run somewhere around $180 IIRC. Try Battery Technologies
Inc. ( maybe).

Is he giving you the original disks along with any required serial
numbers or just including the installed software on the disk?

Lift up the laptop and rotate it around the vertical axis or tilting

magnetic sensor with regard to the Earth's magnetic field changing it
just enough to clear the sensor.

Thanks,

That problem does indeed happen on the PowerBook. One can shield the
drive with Mu metal to fix it. This is a material that has a high
magnetic permeability which keeps the magnetic fields from the drive
confined. I instead just keep turning the computer while tapping the
shift key till it wakes up (which it always does).
