WallStreet YoYoYoYo

2004-02-04 Thread Paul Stamsen
Does anyone have any arcane insight why my son's WallStreet will not consistently
connect to his yoyo?

What can be done? Anyone? Even a hint of where to google?

You'll have to pull the back off the display housing to get to the label
on the rear of the LCD. An LCD with the _exact_same_ model number will
work, no matter from where it came. Note the model number will look
something like this - "LTN141XU-L01" (though this example is almost
certainly NOT the one YOU need) and it's almost certainly gotta match
entirely and exactly. This example is a Samsung part and I don't know
what the PN all means, though "LTN141" is a 14.1" TFT LCD. Variations on
"LTN141" (and there are many!) probably relate to the mechanical design,
connector position and type, LCD controller type, backlight cable
position and length, etc.

As for pulling the display bezel apart . . . have you got the repair
manual or its equivalent? It's not at all difficult but plastic damage is
likely if opened improperly, the little edge clippy things break easily.

That's the one thing keeping me from moving to OS X.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that it worked in Panther without

Even as I have been here writing this listing one lead on the

The formerly dead battery now hold 2.5 hours of charge and the pram is fine.

I don't recall the exact apple page but the advice came from this list, from

As to if it working on a Pismo , Battery Reset 2 read me lists it to
be used on G3 P/Bks so download it and try it.

Hi guys, this is my first post here. I just bought a
WallStreet from eBay. Everything is fine except the
space key. It pops up a video player window instead of
inputing a space in the editor window. However, I
found Shift+Space is functioning as the input of a
space. Is that because of some lock? Thanks!
Shiung
Wow, that's kinda funny. Does "It pops up a video player window"
mean that the space bar opens the Apple Video Player? Are you
running an OS older than OS X?

If that's the case, it's easy to fix. Open Apple Video Player. In
the menu bar, click on the "Setup" menu and pick "Hot Key...". Then
click the "none" button.

Done! Your space bar has been returned to normal...

Peace,
Drew

Not sure if this works on the Wallstreet, but I know on later model like
the Pismo, if the CPU daughtercard (does WS have one of those?), if the
card is not fully seated, the CPU connector pins don't make good contact
and you get problems with booting.

If the Wallstreet has a daughtercard for the CPU, make sure it is fully
seated. That *might* be the source of the problem(s). Those who have
experience with Wallstreets, please feel free to correct me or
confirm/deny this as a potential source for Sid's problem.

As much as I'd like to say I agree with others suggestions it might just
be a jostled-loose or damaged cable, I'm afraid my experience suggest the
LCD itself is damaged.

A single line of pixels defect is almost certainly caused by a failed
(open or shorted) very fragile tiny connection at the edges of the LCD
where the LCD's integral controller attaches to the LCD screen itself. It
could also be caused by damage to the LCD's controller PCB though given
the fragile nature of LCDs' edge connections I'd say it's a fair bet
that's the more likely suspect, esp. as the cause was a tumble.

Each color column and row of a TFT LCD is controlled by its own
individual circuit, so if any of those are damaged it usually just
affects those damaged columns (or rows.) If the cable from the logic
board is jostled-loose or damaged it will usually affect a range of
screen addresses, if not the entire screen.

I'm sorry to be the bad-news-bearer, and I truly hope I'm wrong. If LCD
replacement is in the cards, you can use an LCD from a Lombard (various
PC laptops too) as long as it's the same make and model LCD. You just
reuse your old cable as a Lombard's cable differs from Pismo's or PC
laptop's cable.

Note the LCD's model number and do an eBay search for variations on that
string using the "search in titles & descriptions" check box (eg: samsung
LTN141X8 - this is just an example and not necessarily the model _you_
may need.) You'll be surprised at how many turn up, 14" TFTs are a very
common laptop screen size. Also, keep in mind your damaged LCD is still
worth something, so if you do buy a perfect replacement you could then
sell off your defective (but still functional) LCD for a suprisingly
large percentage of what you paid for the replacement (or knowing eBay
craziness, even more! :-)

that the old messages/mailboxes were copied over as I tried to finish
the job manually.

Pismo batteries

Dingo,
This programme only runs on Wallstreets, but the battery is the same.
(AFAIK)

See if you can find a friend with a Wallstreet to do you a favour.

Good luck,

Does it work on a Pismo? Though I think my battery may be beyond

lombard wireless

2004-02-04 Thread Gordon Bruce Lawson
Have a little network set up with 2 imacs and my powerbook... am
using a D-Link router. It shorted out the other day and stopped
working. The place I bought it is having trouble finding the exact
one and suggested the same brand, but wireless as it has ethernet
plugs in the back and would work the same. Question... if I go with
that router and use my 2 imacs plugged in... would one of the PC
wireless cards they sell (D-Link) work in my card slot... any
problems hooking up to a wired network? When I hooked the network
up, it was pretty painless (other than connecting the router to the
HS modem)... getting connected from the actual computers was easy.

If you read the comments at the Web site, a number of users have
found this to be the case. Same for me. Perhaps if you shut down
after the first install, rather than restart, it would work correctly
the first time? At any rate, no files have to be erased.

Also, does that driver work on Panther? I know they have versions out for
Jag and 10.1 but nothing on their site refers to Panther. Does that mean
the project is dead, or is it just moving really really slowly?
That's the one thing keeping me from moving to OS X.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that it worked in Panther without
problems. Just make sure you use the Jag drivers, not the older ones.
The project may be dead (or comatose), but the software lives on -
get moving!

Keep Myy Pismo?

2004-02-04 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler
At 9:09 + 2/4/2004, Tom Burke wrote:
Umm - I'm not sure what great features the Pismo had that iBooks

With thanks to Low End Mac on Ice Man

"Although the G4 iBooks use a G4 CPU, it's not the same one used in
the PowerBook G4 -- this version has only a 256 KB level 2 cache,
which means it won't provide the same performance as a PowerBook at
the same clock speed."

Thats a wash, I have a gig of memory and upgraded to a faster HD

"The new iBooks support AirPort Extreme, which has 5x the bandwidth
of the original AirPort. Also new are USB 2.0, Mobility Radeon 9200
graphics, room for an internal Bluetooth module, and the use of DDR
(double data rate) RAM."

So yes there is improvement there, the graphics are nice X loves graphic cards

"Base memory on the 12" model is now 256 MB (128 MB onboard, 128 MB
in a slot), and all iBooks now ship with a Combo (CD-RW/DVD) drive.
Max memory 640"

Got a burner,

"Iceman has no expansion bays, or PC Card slot." I like my expansion
bays total use ability.

I gotta admit icemans price is right at $1000.000 probably lower with refurbs

But I am still kinda following the flow to hold, Apple is not really
wowing me away from my Pismo. Apple has really kicked butt with the
DT market, hands down a maxed out G5 would be a buy.

Bring that to a lap top and I would buy. It just seems there have
been lots of little, sometimes big, but annoying problems with the
books after Pismo. I think they need to go a bit farther to get me to
bite. I know it will be a while but Apple sells more LTs then DTs So
I hope they get busy.

Now I just went to Apples site and for the 17 inch with the good
stuff $5379.00 actually a little more then what my 1st pismo cost me
by about 1500.00. Now you could save a little by installing ram, but
on Power Books it is a pretty good idea to leave the stuff to Apple.
As Apple Care is getting a little snippy. Yes it is 1.33 ghz but for
300 I can get 900 w/o the G4 of course. So the real bottle neck on
the pismo is the graphic chip and for the OS the G4.

Interesting comparison
Geoff

What edge took the hit first, the front by the track pad or the back,
corner was it a even landing?

If you have a external monitor and the plug that came with the pismo
you can hook it up and see what you see

The video cable is the big old yellow feller on the left side it has
a screw holding it in place

To get at it where the hinge is there are a couple of steps. You have
to lay the keyboard off, then just inside of the power button and
sleep light lift up on the hinge cover, just put the screen back and
pull up gentely but firmly. If you get a little nervous go back in
the list a few weeks and you will see some posts by me that the good
folks here gave me during my sweat fest and getting this cover off.
This will let you see if the cable is getting pinched. Probably is
not but you never know. Go the short way before the long way.
Hope this works. The good thing, screens for the Pismo are not too
bad. If you get one, get a complete screen so it just drops in. But
your a ways from this yet.
Good luck

I'd wait a few more months to a year since the G5 will be going into
the books soon. as someone has said, the iBooks and Powerbooks don't
have the great features that the Pismo had. Applw has been working to
replace the G4 in their high end products. In addition to the new
64bit processor, they're throwing in new tech.
Umm - I'm not sure what great features the Pismo had that iBooks
(icebooks) and later Powerbooks don't have? The Pismo was a good
machine in its day, sure, but it's underpowered by today's standards,
and natively has a small HD and little RAM - nearly everyone I know who
has one (including my wife) has upgraded both of these. The video card
is nothing special, either, and I believe isn't capable of running
Quartz Extreme.

The late 2001 14" iceBook was known as 'Son of Pismo', and the name
fits - same size screen, but faster CPU and bigger HD.

In my opinion the iBooks in particular are looking like very good value
for money at the moment. How much was a new Pismo three+ years ago?
Compare that with the price of a new 14" iBook, then compare the specs
- that's a good deal.

Re: Keep my pismo or ??

2004-02-04 Thread Marc
I''ve decided to stay with my Pismo for another year or so, I don't
really like the look and feel of the 14 inch iBooks and can't afford a
new 15-inch Powerbook. And with 1GB of memory, a faster, bigger disk
and a G4/550 it should get me throughh the next two years, I hope.
It''s durable, expandable and easy/cheap(?) to repair as opposed to
newer models.

But speaking for myself, I am also waiting on Apple to come out with as
well-featured of a 'Book as the Pismo, preferably with the Pismo's
visual
appeal! For me, the TiBooks and AlBooks look like metal bricks (pizazz?
NOT!), and the iBooks, while looking a bit better than the metalBooks,
still is plain when I compare it to the Pismo's lines.

So I'm hoping Apple will get beyond plain, boring lines for their
'Books

Pismo, and maybe get another clean, used one (off eBay or elsewhere)
and
upgrade it as much as feasible and financially worthwhile.
