Wallstreet II screen cable problem - what's an inverter board?

2004-02-23 Thread Matthew D. O'Conner
What does an "inverter board" do on a Wallstreet II/300, 14.1"? I
think that I split part of the edge of the cable on one of the two
Wallstreets that I put together tonight. Now the computer seems to
work okay (that's new) but the screen is really dim even with the
brightness turned all the way up. I looked at the mac technical
manual and found that the damaged cable goes to a device called an
inverter board that fits in the bottom of the screen case.

Assuming that I ruined the cable, anyone have suggestions on where to
find a used inverter board cable? This is not the cable that runs up
the back of the screen. The one that I broke(?) runs only along the
bottom of the screen.

From my understanding of ISP-level spam filtering, if you get
absolutely no spam, then it's almost certain that their spam filter is
catching legitimate email. Since I rely on email for business as well
as personal use, I'd rather deal with spam than miss even one
legitimate email, even if it is kept in a list somewhere that I can
check from time to time.

So, at least for now, I won't use any ISP's spam filtering capabilities.

This is the link in question...

Appartently if your bid is sucessfull you'll get the instructions on how to

Sounds way too dodgy to me, but I just wondered if anyone out there had seen

Re: Panther on Pismo

2004-02-23 Thread Jim Scolman
Hi, I just added RAM to bring my Pismo up 640MB of RAM, 1 GIG is
better. I also bought a Hitachi/IBM, 5400 RPM, 40 GIG drive. My Pismo
is a 400 speed system. I installed Panther and am very happy with the
Pismo. The RAM, hard drive, and my copy of Panther were bought from
ebay. If you really like your Pismo, the hardware and software
upgrades are very worth the cost. Also, you can do all the mods and
installs yourself.it was fun. Do it!!! Good luck, Jim.

A lot of Wallstreet users have reported using 512MB RAM in their Wallstreet.
You just have to be careful to pick memory specifically for the Wallstreet,
specially if you plan to use OS X which is really picky about memory.

I've been using Verizon for some time now and have been very satisfied with
their service. When you call for support, they have a choice for Macintosh

That really depends. It could be either; a 14" system is going to get
less time on it than a 12" one, but most of the variance is with what
you're doing with it.

Lots of disk access, both HDD and optical will really lower the battery
time. If you're running at a low amount of RAM, you're hitting the disk
a lot for virtual memory, which will kill battery time.

Airport cards kill battery time, too, turn it off when you're not using
it.

Plus it could be an old tired battery.

However, I've found that if I accidentally hit a key on the external
keyboard when the PB is sleeping (lid shut), the system wakes up -
the external screen comes on, I can work, etc - but if I then open
the screen on the PB it remains blank, as if it were still asleep.
Furthermore closing the lid when it's in this state doesn't send it
back to sleep; the external display stays on, etc. The only way to
re-establish normal operations is to disconnect the external
display, which I don't want to do because when I later reconnect it
the whole system loses the display resolutions I've set up on both
components.

So the question is - when a PB with external equipment is woken up
by means of an accidental keyboard operation, how can I can get the
base unit to fully wake as well?
I used my TiBook this way for quite a while (lid shut, big LCD
monitor and external KB and mouse). I think Apple figure that if you
use it with the lid shut, you don't want the built-in display on (I
certainly don't). Just choose Sleep from the Blue Apple. To use the
built in screen again, I usually disconnect the external monitor and
then open the lid. As for getting the base unit to 'fully Wake',
surely it is awake if, as you say, you can work, etc. If you want to
use the built-in and external monitors together I think you need a
trip to System Preferences.

If it is more than a couple of years old, probably not, but you can give
Battery Reset 2 (free download from Apple) a try. Could help, couldn't
hurt.

Wallstreet logic board/LCD questions

2004-02-23 Thread COCCORP
Hello, G'thang People...

Awhile back, I was lucky enough to get a huge amount of Wallstreet parts from a tech
friend of mine who was blowing out his inventory. He warned me some of the stuff was
broken

Anyway, I managed to put together about 2 working Wallstreet (I and II) laptops, and
they are great! Up until that time, I had not gone past the 1400/166, and I used as my
main laptop (and still use it today!) an ancient Duo 2300c.

Anyway, now as I sort thru the parts that are either broken or need attention, I
notice that MANY of the Wallstreet logic boards seem to have display problems; either
with showing a pic on the LCD or on an external monitor (thru the monitor port or the
S-video port). What gives?

Several boards are labled "no backlight on LCD." Others simply show nothing on the LCD
(a 14.4"), even as the laptop is running. And still others show nothing ont he LCD or
on any external source.

My question is: outside of the 13.3 LCD problems, is losing the logic board display
ability an inherent problem w/ the Wallstreets? As old and s-l-o-w as the G1 and G2
Powerbooks are, I never came across so many mobo/lo'bo issues w/ displays!

First, try resetting the Power Manager (see small decal behind the flip
down door on the back of the machine). Try with battery out but plugged
into the wall. Then, run Battery Reset with the battery installed.

'new' eBay Wallstreet II defective?

2004-02-23 Thread Matthew D. O'Conner
Just bought a replacement Wallstreet II (300) on eBay and it may be defective.

It has 128Mb RAM and is running OS 9.2.2

The PRAM battery is shot, no big surprise here. It will start from
the battery (I have two known good ones bought new about one year
ago) if it has had the date set while the batteries remain in place.
What is a surprise is that it will NOT start from the battery (or
batteries) if the battery has been removed for a time (and thus the
dates / PRAM info. lost).

It does consistently start when plugged in (I have one of the
updated, warranty Apple power adapters).

Even if the dates are all wrong, it should still start from the
battery, shouldn't it?

I'm thinking that I may need to return this. I have a newish PRAM
battery in another Wallstreet II/300 that just died but I don't want
to open up the new one just to test this; if I did that, I'm sure
that I could not return it.

Suggestions?

Jason, you'll need to make sure that the ownership for this folder is
set to you. Open the terminal and do the following:

# cd /path/to/where/the/directory/is
# ls -al
Check the third column. It should have your username as the "owner" of
the folder. If not, type the following:

# sudo chown yourusernamehere:staff nameoffolder

enter your password at the prompt.

To get rid of the lock, type the following:

# sudo chflags nouchg, noschg nameof folder

If you have any questions you can email me directly.

If you don't know what Basilisk II is it's a 68k emulator for OS X.
Why are you needing to run Basilisk instead of Classic? Do you have
some specialized software that won't run in an OS higher that 7.x/8.x?
