Micro$oft on the Mac

2004-04-30 Thread Larry le Mac
So many people are saying that Micro$oft's presence on the Mac is
important for the survival of the Mac, but I am wondering...
I am fully aware of how crap Office is on the Windows platform,
which is probably why I put up with Orifice v.X on my Mac.
I start the day by switching on my brand new PB 15 Alu, Mac OS
X.3.3 and then start Orifice v.X. Immediately it crashes (the only app
apart from Internet Exploder to crash on my Macs). Re-open Word
and start a new document.
I then go to save it and Word tells me I can only save the document
with 31 characters or less.
What is this, some ph*ckin' vengance for the years of 8+3 ?!?
Piece of crap!!!

Larry
P.S. Where I work, everyone uses Word and therefore I cannot switch,
before I get suggestions of OpenOffice, AppleWorks etc.

There are two ways to look at this mess:

1) M$ is being sensitive to the needs of old Mac OS (8-9) users.
The problem is that the old Finder on old Mac OS only supports
filenames up to 31 characters. Because Office force limits
filename lengths to this old restriction, OS X users can still
transport their Office documents to old Mac OS users without
mangling the filenames.

2) M$ is too lazy to implemented 10-year-old API changes.
Apple introduced HFS+ that supported 255-character filenames a
while ago (like a decade ago), as well as new APIs to handle
these longer filenames. I don't know if the old APIs even got
Carbonized for OS X! Anyways, it's just another example of a
giant monopoly not caring about taking advantage of all the
features of OS X and making a better app.

Choose your adventure and pick a path.

OS X Apps vs. OS 9 ???

2004-04-30 Thread Larry le Mac
Hi y'all!
On my old Pismo with OS 9.2.1 I could open a fairly complex .AI file
(created from a .DWG CAD drawing) in Freehand 9 by asigning around
100MB to the app, the Mac had 384MB of RAM.
But now on my PB 15 768MB RAM and OS X.3.3 and Frrehand MX
the file cannot be opened due to not enough memory.
What ?!
Any ideas ? I cannot accept that this spec Mac cannot do the job
that an old G3 with half the memory could...

Micro$oft on the Mac

2004-04-30 Thread Jim Scolman
Good morning, I find the spelling of Microsoft with a $ to be
completely disingenuous..if you had been smart enough to buy, steal
or create DOS you would be rich too. Do you believe Apple products are
cheap, or Apple is not in the business to make money? I have been a
Mac user since 1985 and have never worked in a Mac environment, but I
have worked all of my IT career in the DOS and Windows world.all
versions of Windows. Perhaps there is a reason that everyone in your
office use MS products, 99% of the time they just work!!!most folks
work is not in computers, they use computers to do their job and must
have something that works. Have you considered that perhaps the reason
your machine crashes is due to poor application installation, systems
and applications not being up to date, poor maintenance, and or just
bad user practices? Like it or not Microsoft is here and is a leader
and in some cases the standard. If you don't like Microsoft products
THEN DON'T USE THEM and stop bitching! No I own no MS or Apple stock
and do not work for either excellent company. Sincerely, Jim Scolman.

2004-04-30 Thread Mike Kauspedas
I've used Office on new machines and old machines and never had a
single problem. We've got it loaded on 30 eMacs here at the school I
work for and all of them run flawlessly. The PC's with office and win98
lock up all the time, but the Macs run fine. Office 2001 runs great too
on classic. I would suggest reloading the application, perhaps deleting
the preferences?

Re: Micro$oft on the Mac

2004-04-30 Thread Mike Kauspedas
Right on, when was the last time Apple gave something similar to
Microsoft's TS2 seminars. They teach you how to use their products and
then give you a free copy. Not every TS2 is the same, but since I
started attending 2 years ago I've gotten Windows 2000 SBS, Office XP,
Windows XP pro, Windows Server 2003, and numerous other MS apps. All of
these were full versions with no trial period.
To echo this mac users point, both are great companies and I feel both
are here to stay. I love my Mactop (PB G3) and wouldn't trade it for
the world, but in defense of MS they offer so much support to the
technical community that then passes on to the consumer.
If anyone knows of free Mac seminars I would love to know! Seriously,
that isn't sarcasm.

Re: Microsoft on the Mac

2004-04-30 Thread Aaron Willems
I couldn't agree more with you. MS office for PC users works great at the
office, so does Office 2001 for my OS 9 users. I have had some problems with
Office X and OS X, nothing I couldn't handle. It usually comes down to
fonts. Fonts and MS Office X, can really throw OS X for a loop. You might
want to start there with your crashing problems.

You cannot network boot that system; newer macs can be network booted,
but only from OS X Server.

Think about it...how are you going to network boot the drive if you
have to mount an SMB share to do it? Network booting is very
OS-specific.

Your best bet for an emergency backup of that Wallstreet is to back it
up to an external SCSI HDD. Then when needed , boot from the external
drive and use CCC to kick over the contents.

Not true. MS Office has simply become *so* predominant either at home or

Micro$soft, Microslime, Microsoft, etc.

2004-04-30 Thread Laurent Daudelin
Folks,

Can you drop the off-topics about whether Microsoft is in business to make
money or not or is better or worst than Apple?

As long as we talk about their products and how to use them on G3-G4-based
PowerBooks, that's fine, but other topics are off-limit.

So, please, drop it.

Thanks!

-Laurent.

Regarding M$? I look at them v. us like driving a Miata v. a
Karmann-Ghia convertible. Sure, the Miata may be easier to get parts

Its your choice how to spend your money also. I don't see how Microsoft
has done anything evil? or Haliburton for that matter, just examples.
No one is dead for using a Mac and Microsoft hasn't bombed Apple's HQ.
Lets be realistic...

Re: Micro$oft on the Mac

They just used the older Carbon API to do a quick,
straight port without bothering using the new calls
to support more than 31 characters...
I know the MBU isn't as big as the rest of Micro$oft, but I still
think it sucks. Really cheap.

: Apple designs for elegance first.
: Which is why they've never been consistently successful.
But even this response worries me, because it is directly associates
success with profit. That means that without profit, there is no
such thing as success. What a sad world we live in...
You needn't be that worried as I admit I didn't formulate that
quite the way I should, I should have said financially successful.
Of course Apple is and has been successful, very much so. Why
else would there be such a loyal following ?!

Also, the Think Different ad campaign is/was successful 'cause

Re: Micro$oft FINAL MAIL (from me)

2004-04-30 Thread Larry le Mac
I take Laurent's point and will not post further mails on the subject
(until net it's brought up ;o)
but if anyone is interested, mail me off-line and I will send you a
small (less than 1MB) movie clip of an interview with Steve Jobs
that in my opinion sums up this whole argument.
Why Micro$oft in fact IS Micro$oft.

Audio Feedback on Pismo

2004-04-30 Thread Charles
I've noticed that anytime an application requires/enables audio input
using the built-in mic speakers on my Pismo, it triggers a screeching
feeback. I have to mute the speakers to use the built-in mic, then
mute the mic and turn on speaker output for playback. Kind of a
bummer. It even happened once on restart after a system crash. Really
awful sound.

Checked the archives but didn't find any help there.
Pismo 500, 384MB RAM, OS X 10.3
Thanks,
Charles
