AppleWorks putting the SQUEEZE on

2004-05-03 Thread RStockdell
I've just tuned in, but I'm not a newbie. I've been on the A2-list, several
Mac-lists, the G-list, lem-swap, and now G-Books. I've started another thread
- "sleeping sickness' - but this is a different problem that is showing up on
BOTH IBooks.

I have an iBook/600/2001 (snow, dual USB), and a later iBook/700/2001 (snow,
dual USB).

When I build documents on any of my other Macs (6500, 8600's, 5300 laptop,
etc.), I can shuffle them about freely with no loss of formatting nor distortion
of any kind. All fonts are equally represented in all of them. The
AppleWorks version is identical. All are using OS 9.2.2.

I cannot do this with the iBooks. Any document built on any other Mac and
transported to an iBook (I use a ZIP100 USB, or an Imation 120 MB SuperDisk USB
- with 1.44 MB floppies) will be improperly formatted when displayed. All
fonts are equally represented in both of them, same as the desktop Macs. The
AppleWorks version is identical. And it doesn't seem to matter whether I boot to
OS 9.2.2 or OS 10.1. And the later iBook has had a clean install of the
original boot software, before loading the matching fonts, so no joy there. It
comes out labeled correctly, with all the fonts listed as used correctly, etc.,
but will linespace smaller than stated (about 5/6), and the lines will come
out about 4 letters shorter in apparent length.

Any takers on this thread ?

Thanks Mikael for the info... but I see the PowerLogix G3 upgrade still
advertised on the web, what does that mean?

And any opinions about other G3 upgrades for the Wallstreet?

Thanks!

I'm unwilling to use ISP-level filtering. Even one missed legitimate
email is too much. With Mail's filters, I can catch the false positives
right away, as I scan new mail (which I do many times a day). With
EarthLink's system ("Spaminator?") I'd have to go to the web site and
sift through a much larger list (unless I checked it 8 or 10 times a
day).

As far as "missing" one per day, that depends on how you define it. It
actually misses more than that (i.e., allows junk through every now and
then). More important to me are the false positives (legit mail marked
as junk).

I haven't seen or heard of any ISP-level spam filter that doesn't catch
some legit mail. And since I do a lot of business via email, I don't
even want to put up with a delay of hours, let along days. I'm sure it
works for many people, though.

sleeping sickness

2004-05-03 Thread RStockdell
I've just tuned in, but I'm not a newbie. I've been on the A2-list, several
Mac-lists, the G-list, lem-swap, and now G-Books.

I am a teacher. Taught computer lit (among many things). Rebuild computers
as a hobby, and have been puttering with about 70 Macs over the last couple
years. I now have an iBook/600/2001 (snow, dual USB), and a later
iBook/700/2001 (snow, dual USB).

The first was bought with a monitor that lit, but had been stepped on. I
bought the LCD (without the frame, which I now know was foolhardy !) and
successfully replaced the screen. It functions flawlessly, except for a problem in
AppleWorks to be brought up separately. I mention this one to show that I've
been down and dirty with the guts of an ibook laid out for a week, as preface to
the next paragraph.

The second was bought (by a friend) with known power problems, and I helped
them get the PRAM reset and the battery charged. It has one annoying habit.
When given a bump - the mildest form of shock - on the right hinge, it instan
tly goes to sleep. This can happen with as little a movement as trying to
change the angle of the screen, or attempting to turn the laptop to a different
position. Nothing happens if the shock is on the left hinge. This was so
annoying that they eventually sold it off to me at a loss to get rid of it, since it
couldn't perform as a "lap"-top.

Anyone have experience with either the wiring to/from the LCD/mobo, or the
power system - which I believe is under the power switch ?

Ok, Wayne's message was maybe a little bit over the top.

Now, if you want to continue debating whether the iBooks are good or bad,
please do so privately. Otherwise, I'll have to ban people who don't comply.
This is a list to discuss the use of Motorola/IBM G-based processor laptops

Re: Fake email

2004-05-03 Thread Harry D . Corsover
Tom,
I think that was just (bad) luck of the draw. Spammers mass mail out to
common first names at any domain name they get their hands on. So, if
that email address is something like "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" or
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" they just stumbled upon it. For this reason, many
people use non-sequential numbers after a name in email addresses.
Another way they grab email addresses is by searching web sites. So, if
you have a web site that lists your email address, they can get it.

You'll notice that I haven't taken any of these measures, but that's
partially because I've had this email address for many years, and it's
"out there" among friends, family, business associates and colleagues.

Re: Fake email

2004-05-03 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler
I get fake messages from eBay, if I send it to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
It seems they slow down for awhile, I open the whole header for them,
they always write you back and say it was a fake, ya I knew that. Ebay
wrote back a few times telling me that a couple messages contained a
Trojan Horse and if I had clicked one of the links I would have
destroyed ebay and the the whole internet, except for for my Mac that
is...
I also send the spam to my ISP and say here you go. I think the more
complaints the more they have to try and stop this.

Running Mail 3.3 it's real good about filtering these out, after about
3 days of training I just let it go, I may have 50 to 60 junk e-mails
a day, but there junk and rarely does it mess up and put something good
in the junk box and if it does, it's very easy to spot.

This isn't spam, but it is due to a virus on someone's computer.
There are several viruses out there that infect PC computers. These
viruses reside on a person's computer and look for email addresses
that are on that computer. They then send out fake messages to those
email addresses using other email addresses that they find on that
computer as the apparent sender. They also include an attachment
that, if opened, will infect the receiving party's computer.

I seem to get at least one legit email a day in my Junk folder. Most of
the time I take a minute to update my Rules so the same sender's stuff
doesn't wind up there. But I have to carefully scan that Junk folder
before using the handy Cmd-Opt-J shortcut to permanently delete all
mail in that folder. I seem to get 200 or more junk emails a day :-(.

Actually, that won't get rid of these annoyances unless you never use
the new email address or tell anyone about it (so it never winds up in
the address book of someone on Windows using Outlook or Outlook
Express).

So, AFAIK, there's no practical option to deleting them. You can try to
train your Junk filter in Mail, and that will catch some of them, but
you'll still wind up spending a certain amount of your time dealing
with this stuff.

Hi All -

For those who might be interested here's an update on the Wallstreet
problems that I was having. After much taking apart and investigating I am
pretty certain that the problem is the PMU. It display's the same symptoms
with or without the processor card in so I don't think that it's even
getting to that point. So I'll be getting a PMU (look for my SWAP list post
in a few moments) and trying that next. Thanks to all who responded both on
and off list for their help and suggestions.

Original message partly follows:

Obviously you've never driven either. The Miata is a
blast to drive,
pure
and simple, while a Karmann-Ghia is slow, handles
poorly and makes all
the
wrong noises. I believe a better comparison would be
an Alfa Romeo
Spider,
which in addition to being fun to drive, is actually
good-looking as
well,
especially the 1979 and earlier without the black
plastic trunk cap.

Oh, to stay on-topic, my 12" PowerBook would fit
nicely in the small
area
behind the seats of either a Miata or an Alfa spider,
though I think it
would be happier in a shiney new Z4 than either.
