Oh dear!
It does work, but I too thought my fingers were going to break off
backwards, from holding those keys! For me, it worked once out of about
six tries, then I gave up. However, my battery is how charging, but
whether it was the Open Firmware or my booting into OS 9 that did it, I
shall never know.

Lucky you. I have nearly broken off my fingers trying to get a
Wallstreet I to boot into open firmware. I am convinced it will not
happen.

reset-nvram do and why should it not be a recognised command? Will it
work without the hyphen?
Incidentally, I have great difficulty getting Open Firmware to start.
Sometimes it does, but most times not. Is there any way of setting it

DVD burning in OS X

2004-06-07 Thread Joe Crow
Hi, folks.
A while back I replaced the stock DVD drive in my Pismo with an LG
GCC-4240N. I got the burner update files from xlr8yourmac.com, and
replaced the authoring support files in OS 9, sans problem.
Unfortunately, I just updated to OS X, and have no idea how to do the
same thing. The OS X file is labeled LGCDR.device-plugin, but I don't
know where it goes. I tried putting it in the extensions folder, but it
doesn't seem to do anything. Profiler still says burning isn't
supported. Any advice from the pros?

Making a Choice?

2004-06-07 Thread Peter Polshek
Hello all. I need a Powerbook. I have read extensively on LowEnd
Mac regarding possibilities. It seems a good Pismo is a fine
economical choice. However, I would like to have a CD-RW along with
DVD. Once I seek that, the number of choices expands widely. SO,
which ibook, powerbook should I choose? G3 is fine, but I do want
reliability and physical robustness. Of course used is fine, but I
will review my options in the refurbished market. My wife now runs a
current G4 Powerbook and I run several Mac clones, a 9600 and a G3
beige all on OS 9.x. Please advise. Suggestions for resources for
reviews and recommendations/opinions are welcome as well. Thanks.

daughtercard replacement

2004-06-07 Thread Jeff Greffe
Hello there !
Just before I will pop in another replacement cpu card, I just want to
make sure I will not fry it again due to another malfunction !

Now, as previously described, when I try to start up this pismo, I get
a grey screen, a spinup of the HD, and then stuck ...
I tried the firewire target mode to check the HD with another laptop,
HD seems ok.
I tried starting up from an install cd ... still the same as with the
HD.
I can get into OF ... tried resetting everything, no go ...

BUT, after trying all those things, the CPU and heat shield get really
hot ... would it be the case if there was a CPU card failure ? .. would
the CPU still try to work and get hot ?

Thanks
Jeff

If you look again on xlr8yourmac.com, there should be a mention of a hacking
tool that will give burning option to some Apple software that won't
recognize your drive otherwise. I forget how the patching tool is called,
unfortunately...

Wallstreet processor mitch-match

2004-06-07 Thread COCCORP
Hi, I recently obtained a WS 266mhz off a well-known auction webcite(!), with
the seller using the ol'
gosh-I-don't-know-if-it-works-I-have-no-power-cord-2-test-it-with shuffle; I have
had luck in the past, and the price was
righteous, so I took a chance...

Sure enough, when I received it it was acting erraticly; sometimes it would
startup; other times it would shut off for no reason the fan and the green
light would cut on and stay on indefinitely.

I thought it might be a bad pram and/or charge board and/or processor, so I
commensed to dismantling it. Come to find out, it was a Series I motherboard
with a Series II(!) 266mhz processor!

I put in a 250mhz WS processor and it works fine now.

My questions (finally!) are these: I assumed that mis-matching a WS series I
or II motherboard with a series II or I processor would result in the laptop
not working at all. Eveidently not? Anyone have similar experiences?

Also, by mis-matching the processor/motherboard, is there any chance either
part could have been damaged?

Thanks...

Re: iMac Ram in a Pismo?

2004-06-07 Thread Pauline Turtle-Bear Guillermo
I have that same RAM chip in my Pismo right now. I bought the
PC133/512MB RAM 2 years back to eventually put into an LCD iMac, but
I've kept my Pismo a bit longer than I expected and the RAM specs have
changed in the newer iMacs. The Pismo actually uses PC100 RAM, so it
can't use the PC133 speed, but it should work anyway.

which was irrelevant to the iMac) and put it in my Pismo? What
research I have done on the web is giving me mixed signals so I turn
to this list.

Will RAM from that iMac (same RAM as used in the Cube among other
Macs) always work in my Pismo? Never work with my Pismo? Work under
certain conditions (e.g. a certain slot)?

I just picked up a Powerbook G4/400 sans power supply for $493. Counting

what you pay for a Pismo.

I use a Lombard for recording my LP collection. RCA to mini-stereo from

split the tracks, edit the pops and crackles, burn a CD from the AIFF

IMO the Aluminum 'books look really nice new, really nice old, and

We tested some homeplug stuff about 4 months ago. Wasn't impressed.
[Brand names withheld due to licensing permission restrictions]
Initially, it worked ok, with annoying limitations.
We couldn't get anything in the back quarter of our home to work.
Apparently there's something in the garage's circuit breaker box that
stopped it.

Two of the wall-box interfaces fried during our first thunder storm.
Adding a protector between the wall socket and the box stopped it
from functioning.

Actual throughput was about 3 Mbps (the devices were advertized as 14
Mbps). Fast enough to keep up with something like cable modem. But
it's abysmally slow compared to the 10, 50, and 100 Mbps we normally
use to print or to move files between machines on our LAN.

Bottom line: Far more expensive, less versatile, less reliable, and
far slower than running Cat5 or a using cheap 802.11a/b/g WAP. I
think this is an interesting technology that needs a few years to
mature.

Industrial design is important to Apple under the leadership of Jobs and as
long as that remains the case, I think we can safely assume the Macintosh
package will be refreshed every couple of years. In other words, we probably
have another year of silver aluminum. After that? We can only hope the
titanium model taught Apple an important lesson.

daughtercard replacement

Thanks

Re: DVD burning in OS X

2004-06-07 Thread Jeff Hubatka
From: Joe Crow [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: DVD burning in OS X
Date: Mon, 7 Jun 2004 05:01:12 -0400
In OSX 10.2 or lower you can edit the file, even using Text Edit.
However, you need to be logged in as root to move the file back into
the proper folder, from Terminal. You can also move the file by booting
into OS9. In 10.3 Panther, you need to use Patchburn II, which will
modify the file. Earlier versions of X can also use Patchburn (both
found via xlr8yourmac links) to mod the file, too. Probably easier.

I've not had the pleasure to work with an aluminum PB, but what you say

I find it strange that the choice for a titanium surface required a

The choice of material has to take into account conductivity and

This might be, but I never heard of it. I'd assume the CPU would adjust
it's speed to the appropriate divider matching the bus speed. I think
that in the Beige G3 at least , that is what will happen.
On the other hand, my experience with the Powerlogix 500Mhz G3 bluechip,
showed that you have to have the correct Mac Rom. Possibly Apple CPU's do
have the correct ROM, no matter what.
I did run my 266 CPU on the 83 Mhz original motherboard and it worked. I
did not check the speed, however. This was for a short time as the 83Mhz
board had problems.

Also, by mis-matching the processor/motherboard, is there any chance either
part could have been damaged?
I don't think so. I have matched several processors on one WS I and one
WS II boards and have had no probs, except for the Powerlogix 500Mhz G3
upgrade as mentioned.

Others may have more informed experiences.

ALL PCI-based Macs (from the 7200 onward) have OpenFirmware. Some
have a more complete OF than others, but all PCI-based Macs have OF
to one degree or another.

2004-06-07 Thread Pauline Turtle-Bear Guillermo
My, this sure took a lng time to get posted. (In the mean time, I
find I was giving the wrong info.)

I have that same RAM chip in my Pismo right now. I bought the

I've kept my Pismo a bit longer than I expected and the RAM specs have
changed in the newer iMacs. The Pismo actually uses PC100 RAM, so it
can't use the PC133 speed, but it should work anyway.

Re: next generation of laptop construction and design

Hi
I agree the White iBook was nice ... but not for the PowerBooks;
I reckon a return to black would be nice ... maybe with some chrome
highlights ...
but it could be my motorbike days are messing with Pismo on my brain ...

I'm unsure whether a glossy black or a matt black would be the go ...
maybe some
sort of fluorescent black ... but perhaps some sort of black that means
business ...

Harry.
P.S. Any (preferably Oz-based) subscribers know if the Pismo backup
battery
is easy to obtain from a non-Apple source. I guess it is easy enough to
install.
My local AppleCentre (http://www.mac1.com.au/index.shtml) rang me today
to say
that the exchange Pismo main battery has arrived (A$230 with return of
original battery).
They quoted A$50-70 for the backup battery ... I wonder if it is
cheaper elsewhere.

(I'm having intermittent booting problems of my Pismo and I want to see
if fresh batteries
will remove that factor from the possible causes. Otherwise it'll be
time to use my
AppleCare and pray ...)

Looking at my Pismo, I now find the Titanium PowerBook vintage appeal

While I have no experience of machines I've owned, the problems with

Does anyone suspect that Apple will settle with light metal,

industrial plastic or composite of some sort that will be more
durable and damage resistant?
With apple being as image oriented as they are I think the metallic
look will persist for a while yet. One more thing to differentiate
them from 'plain' old iBooks for most people

(although for me, the pure white glossy G3 iBooks were about the
loveliest looking laptops I've ever seen)

Re: next generation of laptop construction and design

2004-06-07 Thread Andrew F.
I rather like the aluminum, so much so that I spent a whole lot more money
for my 1GHz 12 when the 800MHz G4 iBook would have equally served my needs.
For me, it was just too many nice points on the expensive PB (the keyboard
is to die for) and an overall cheapness about the iBook.

Oh well, the current 12 1GHz iBook makes the argument for a 12 PB more
difficult with its higher RAM ceiling and PB-sized L2 cache, but oh that
keyboard and the gorgeous aluminum case.

Re: next generation of laptop construction and design

2004-06-07 Thread Andrew F.
Actually, as a long-time trackpad-hater and IBM TrackPoint fan, why not just
get rid of the trackpad altogether and let Apple inovate something new? The
original PB 100 was so cool because unlike the clip-on mice of the
competition, it had a wonderful trackball built-in. The 500-series were
cool because they introduced the touchpad (woe be to us), and now, a decade
later, we have, the same, ergonomically dismal trackpad.

Something along the lines of the IBM eraserhead, only easier to use,
retaining the ability to tap but without the huge square of touch-sensitive
whatever the hell its made of to be accidentally touched. I'm just
dreaming, but as a trackpad-hater and Mac-fan, that's all I can do.

Speaking of the next generation PowerBooks, it would be really neat if Apple
would scrap the trackpads used in the G4's and went back to the configuration
used in the Pismo. Having it raised just a tad makes a huge ergonomic
 difference!
