I love the trackpad. I'm a high-speed touch-typist and to me the track pad
is far better ergonomically than a track ball or mouse. I don't think I have
ever hit it accidentally during the course of typing.

I see your office 2004 test drive footer. How do you like it so far? I
have and like v.X, but figured on upgrading since I qualify for the student

have the single license on v.X (installed on two computers, but can't use
simultaneously).

Any problems on the new version yet? Any features that justify spending
money?

Absolutely agree about the ergonomics. The 15 aluminum I currently have is
a marvel. Thanks to the large display my home desktop barely gets used any
longer. However the front edge is very uncomfortable. On the days when I'm

I think so too. I don't find the current flat trackpad button
position all that easy to use on modern machines or my pb190. The 540c
had it just right, with the clicker curving down in front it just fits
my fingers well :). Haven't yet had a chance to use a pismo long enough

sacrifice some brightness and sharpness. If they could make one that looked

Questions about Wallstreet II

2004-06-08 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello all. I have just obtained a used Wallstreet II (PDQ). I am using OS
9.1. Dont want to go to OSX yet.

Are their any alternet ccl files for the internal modem? I travel to a

33.6.

I have a ccl for the iMac, and for a older supra v90 PCMCIA card that will
force the respective modems to 33.6

Any suggestions?

Which just goes to show, you can't please all of the folks all of the

other pointing device I've ever used, barring my beloved Kensington
Trackballs and a hanging a big ol' cue-ball sized trackball off the
side of a 12 laptop would make it seem rather odd ;-)

But some folks have the wrong body chemistry to use them...I've run
into several people who have all sorts of problems with them.

I've seen a host of different attempts at 'fixing' the problems of
integrating a pointing device into a laptop, and I'll admit, trackpads

Which just goes to show, you can't please all of the folks all of the

OT-Burning a DVD for Windows use

2004-06-08 Thread John Slavin
Hello all:
I have a problem that has left me stumped. My daughter has an IBM
Thinkpad issued by her University. She received it when she was a
Freshman and will be getting a new one this August when she starts her
Junior year. She has quite a bit of music that is on her iTunes for
Windows. The university will not transfer files, so it's up to her
(me) to help her archive her files, including her music. She has a cd
burner on this machine, but not a DVD burner and over 10 GB in music
files alone. My thought was to somehow burn these with my iMac's DVD
burner.

I was able to connect to the iMac with Windows sharing turned on. I
was also able to transfer the files. When I started getting ready to
burn, I discovered you first have create a disk image file (.dmg), but
in looking around on the net, I see that Windows machines have a lot of
trouble dealing with .dmg files. Then I happened upon a site that said
that the newest version of disk copy allows you to create master which
works ok on Windows machines. Clearly when I selected that, a cd-r
file was create rather than a .dmg. And it burned just fine on a dvd
with disk copy. But even my iMac won't recognize the finished dvd,
which makes me wonder if this route works with dvds as opposed to cds.
Can anyone help me with this mess?

Re: Wallstreet processor mitch-match

My questions (finally!) are these: I assumed that mis-matching a WS series I
or II motherboard with a series II or I processor would result in the laptop
not working at all. Eveidently not? Anyone have similar experiences?
This might be, but I never heard of it. I'd assume the CPU would adjust
it's speed to the appropriate divider matching the bus speed. I think
that in the Beige G3 at least , that is what will happen.
On the other hand, my experience with the Powerlogix 500Mhz G3 bluechip,
showed that you have to have the correct Mac Rom. Possibly Apple CPU's do
have the correct ROM, no matter what.
I did run my 266 CPU on the 83 Mhz original motherboard and it worked. I
did not check the speed, however. This was for a short time as the 83Mhz
board had problems.

Also, by mis-matching the processor/motherboard, is there any chance either
part could have been damaged?
I don't think so. I have matched several processors on one WS I and one
WS II boards and have had no probs, except for the Powerlogix 500Mhz G3
upgrade as mentioned.

Others may have more informed experiences.

I administer over a 100 Macs at my Office. This is the procedure I do before
running an OS Update. First, I boot off the Panther CD, and run Disk First
Aid, and I also run Fix Disk Permissions. Then I boot back up, and download
the full combo update for Mac OS 10.3.4. The one that's 81 MB. When I do
this, I avoid problems 99.99% of the time. My advice would be to boot off
the CD, and do the same thing. Then reinstall the full 10.3.4 update.

Re: pismo for recording

2004-06-08 Thread lily
Thank you. I am serious about digitizing sound and doing a high quality
record in the field. I am VERY new at this. Want to make a good decision.
And keep it simple. I am considering using my pismo for recording ambient
sound. I'd also like to control input as I am recording as much as possible
(don't want to do much on computer). So I guess the interface needs to plugs
for mics and knobs to adjust sound in stereo. also need lightweight and low
money

Will read article.

What about the edirol UA-5. It's $250 or so.

also a nice feature, giving tabs to different parts of a document. Oh and
voice memos in documents. Very cool.

 Yes, I'd say so.
Maybe if it was possible to have a large ball. But how? A trackball with
 no moving parts?

Apple should have Logitech build a trackball using their Marble optical
circuitry. I use Marble Mouse almost exclusively in my computer lab, except
for those machines too old to use them. The only moving part in a Marble
drive is the ball itself. Its position is read optically. Very nice.

Absolutely. A great machine. Can even run Final Cut 4 with a few simple
hacks. Recommended: Up ram to a full gig, get a huge and fast hard drive
and a huge external firewire drive. Run Panther, not Jaguar, or OS 9.2.2,

What is boot back up? And how do you down load the combo update while
booted from the Panther install disks?

Yes, but the iMic sucks big time.

 Check out this one instead:
Extreme Tech reviews Echo Audio Indigo IO 24bit PCMCIA Sound Card
 http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1325716,00.asp
It's $180 for Christ sake! For 24bit Audio!
Of course, if you're not an audiophile and not serious about digitizing
your analog music in the best possible reasonably priced way, then it is
 of course not for you.

There are of course also a few other USB based solutions at around $100,
that are also much better than the iMic. But I don't remember their names
 at the moment.

Doesn't say if Mac compatible? Any drivers required? X and 9 capable?
Looks like a winner though...

You don't. You restart the system after doing DFA, then download the

Myh X.3.4 udates went perfectly (1GHz 12 PB, 400MZ Sawtooth) by doing

Heh, I agree with you. I have an old PB180 that I still occasionally

I like the feel of the TiBook keyboard over the iBook (I have a 900mHz

Should be no problem. I do this all the time for work (video
editing). Investigate what codecs are popular on PCs and use one of
those. Paying for Quicktime Pro is a good move - you'll be able to
export different versions easily from a high-quality original.

This would be the place!
And for an short answer to your question: Get as much Powerbook as you

What kind of a budget are you looking at? What do you want to do with

You might *think* you do, but it's astonishing how quickly you realize

Hi,
Could someone please give me the key to identifying a Lombard 333mhz
motherboard, to discern whether it can take a DVD module or not? I had
heard some
333mhz mobos had the DVD capability w/o the PC card...

Also, Lombard and Pizmos share cd-dvd modules, correct?

I have a 400mhz and 333mhz motherboard here, both have the same part
number and revision. I don't see it mentioned in System Profiler, but
the DVD chip is on the bottom side of the board, located almost right
under the G3 processor. Only way to see it is to remove the mobo from
the housing.
The two Powerbooks can use the same modules.

This is a good forum, especially for powerbooks and ibooks. Some other
lists may be of use to you. They all are run by The Macintosh Guy in
Portland as unmoderated lists. They are Mac OS X for Users, Mac OS X
Newbies, and Mac OS X Applications. The X for Users list gets a lot of
traffic volume, the others less so. Many of the usual suspects on this
list show up on them as well.
http://www.themacintoshguy.com/lists/X.html will let you subscribe to

Taking the plunge

2004-06-08 Thread Samantha Goodson
Today I ordered a refurb 12 Ibook 800Mhz G4/256MB/30GB/Combo from the apple
store. This is a big jump for me, as I'm writing this on a 250Mhz G3
upgraded 1400cs running OS 8.6. The ibook was as much as I could afford at
one go, but I'd like to get AppleCare, max out the ram, and get an airport
card and base station. Any recommendations on the order to do these things
in and/or other improvements I really should make? Im also looking for a
good handbook on Panther. Any recommendations there?

peace, love, and joy,

Hi Marcin,
Yes, this is a good forum for asking any PB related questions.
BTW- I bought my first Powerbook 6 months ago and have not regretted it
for a second. I got the 15 Al PB with Superdrive. I absolutely love
it. I did quite a bit of research before buying, including joining
this list for a couple of months to hear what others were saying about
theirs.

Good luck with your decision and welcome to the list,

Re: New PowerBook question.

2004-06-08 Thread Bruce Johnson
On Jun 8, 2004, at 3:40 PM, Marcin Wichary wrote:
 Hi again,
To get straight to the point: I am currently thinking of buying
a PowerBook G4 15 1,33 GHz Combo with 512 MB DDR 333 SDROM in 2
SO-DIMMs
and with a backlit keyboard (which as a touch-typist I don't really
need,
but I just wanna have it for the cool factor :) ). That would cost me
around 2200 euro with discount for [PhD] students. (I am currently
residing
in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.) It seems that with some slight effort
I can afford that.
Good choice. I REALLY recommend getting Applecare, though. I believe
it's pretty much mandatory on laptops, since they have a much higher
chance of breaking.

What I would want to do with it... Nothing heavy, I suppose. :)
I was thinking about some basic stuff: emails/WWW, music, office work,
writing, getting to know Mac OS X better (perhaps with some
programming?),
driving presentations, and on top of that maybe using
Photoshop/InDesign
for simple design/webdesign/typesetting. Possibly iPod in the near
future.
This would be a good choice of machine for that purpose.
- can you upgrade/change the memory later with generic sticks,
or can you only do it via the official Apple stores?
No you can upgrade the memory via third party memory later. In fact,
it's usually cheaper to buy the minimum ram configuration from Apple
then use the rest of the money for Applecare and memory from a third
party.

For example, your solution costs $100 extra at the apple store, but
Datamem.com sells a 512 mb SODIMM for $118. For $18 more than you were
going to buy, you get 768 MB of ram...

- can I drive both digital LCD screens and analogue projectors from
this PowerBook out of the box?
Yes. You'll get a VGA out and possibly an ADC out(?) adapter with this.
- is AppleCare REALLY recommended? (yeah, I know it is, but it's
a really steep icing on top of the already hefty cake... I guess
I need some horror stories to convince me ;) )
It's saved many of my user's butts more than once. All of the faculty
members here with macs travel extensively, and so are utterly dependent
on their Powerbooks.

also, you have to buy it straight with the computer, right? or can
  you purchase it later?
This may depend on the locale, but I think you can buy Applecare for
any system still under the original warrantee.

- I assume that I can't buy this system at my local Apple Store, but
I have to order it as BTO from Apple Store. How much time do you
reckon it should take for the machine to be delivered?
In my experience, absent constraints such as brand new systems, the
Apple store ships pretty quickly. But check your local Apple
store...you may well be able to get it the way you want it there.

Re: Taking the plunge

2004-06-08 Thread Hal
Congrats on the upgrade! You'll notice a nice performance boost.
From my perspective, you'll get a nice boost by upgrading the RAM
(pulling the 128MB module and replacing it with a 512MB). You have a
full year to get AppleCare, so unless you need the phone support (which
is initially only 90 days), you have some time. You can elect it
anytime during the first year warranty and it will add 2 years to the
total time. It also extends the phone support from 90 days to the full
3 years. In the end, I recommend it just in case. You can often find
ithe enrollment kits discounted online as well. I got mine
(iBook-specific) for around $125 on one of the boards.

I'm a big fan of Airport, and highly recommend it. The Apple card isn't
too expensive (and you can usually catch one on eBay). I really like
the base stations as well, but if you don't need the external modem and
antenna jacks, you might be able to get by with the new Airport
Express. It' looks really slick and is a bit cheaper.

I have one each of the Airport Extreme base stations (with and without
the external antenna jack) and they work great. I use one as a repeater
to completely cover my house for wireless.

Good luck with the new hardware.

Samantha,
I just made the same purchase and received my iBook Monday. My laptop
was 1400/G3-220 so I know where you started and you are not going to
believe the change. My desktop is a G4/400 w/ 512MB and the new iBook
makes it feel like a turtle. If your PB 1400 has been your primary
computer the iBook will really blow you away. :-) My first purchase
was an Airport Extreme card and will be followed this weekend by a
512MB RAM. I already had a wireless router so I was set there. If
wireless is NOT your primary concern, I'd go for the RAM first. As for
the base station, depending on your needs, the soon to be released
AirPort Express looks like a nice item.

Best,
JeffW.

java development on a PowerBook

2004-06-08 Thread Leon C. Webster
I am a java developer who is thinking of switching. I would like to hear
reports from other developers who develop on a Powerbook rather than on
Windows (I work for a windows-centric client), or on Linux (which I
currently run on an aging ThinkPad).

Specifically,

*what tools do you use? Eclipse? Intellij? something else? How about
J2EE frameworks and application servers (for development)? Does anyone use
BBEdit?

When do you think the JDK 1.5 vill be available for the Mac? What is the
lag time between Windows Availability and and Mac availability for JDKs?

Thanks much.

Re: New Powerbook Question/Applecare

2004-06-08 Thread Thomas Bridgeland

- is AppleCare REALLY recommended? (yeah, I know it is, but it's
a really steep icing on top of the already hefty cake... I guess
I need some horror stories to convince me ;) )
I don't have it for my iBook or iMac. But I do have very nice repair
policies from the store I bought them from, much cheaper than
AppleCare, and for more years. So far I have used the repair service
twice and been very happy with it. If you buy from a very reputable
dealer with a good return/repair policy, AppleCare is not needed. YMMV!!

Re: New PowerBook question. (OT now)

2004-06-08 Thread Jeff Hubatka

Subject: Re: New PowerBook question.

A year ago I would'nt have thought I would be doing video, but today I
am (or rather later this week, I will be, splicing together footage
from our last trip.
iPhoto kills at doing stuff like putting my photoms on the web (on this
machine, at that)
http://oscar.pharmacy.arizona.edu/Taos_trip/Taos_trip.html
This was a lunchtime project, mostly spent choosing the photos and
writing captions. Creating and publishing the web page was select file
export, and saving it. Poof!

Neat pics, Bruce. May I ask what software you used to set up the pages?
I have used Photoshop for some of mine, but I like the larger
thumbnails with captions you have.

iPhoto and Old Images ?

2004-06-08 Thread MacAddictvja
I checked out Bruce's pictures at
 http://oscar.pharmacy.arizona.edu/Taos_trip/Taos_trip.html

My question is -- Can I take my old images saved as old JPEGS, GIF, PICTS
and use iPhoto to work with the images? I am still waiting for my new iBook
G4 1Ghz 14 superdrive and need to do something with the thousands of family
pictures.

Thanks.

Re: OS 10.3.4

Running 10.3.4 on a BW G3-300 (upgraded to a G4-450)... no real
problems. Just a small glitch with icons on the desktop.

I would not trust store repair policies or extended warranties if my
life depended on them - even with the more reputable stores. They
often have clauses/small print that excludes coverage of numerous
repairs and are often a hassle to deal with. In my experience with
Applecare, my computers were fixed very quickly. In addition, when I
had bad USB port on my iMac's keyboard, they sent another one to me
via FedEx and I got it the next day.
Applecare also offers 3 years of phone support and extended coverage
and can be a good selling point if you sell your computer within the 3
year period.

I guess it boils down to personal preference. I just have had good
experiences with Applecare and not so good experiences with store
warranties.
