Sure is. . .Airport Extreme. . .check it out. The base station on the
extreme has a USB port right on it. Simply plug in the printer into
the base station, and all computers that are connected to the base
station wirelessly can print to it! :)

Besides the Airport method, I forgot that you can also simply plug a
USB printer bluetooth adapter into your printer, pair it with your
TI800, and volia! You can now print with no wires up to 33 feet away.
I've got that exact setup with my Epson C84 and my Pismo.

Wallstreet Questions

2004-06-11 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello all. I am working to get my new used Wallstreet II into shape. I
would like to thank all that answered my other questions.

Got a new one for you.

Can you recommend any brand (or company) for main battery? I tried some
from EBC Battery company in FL for a PB 1400 and they did not last a year.

The most I common have found seems to be from two mfg, BTI and something
called Hi Power. Doing a Google search shows that the same part numbers
sell for any where between $82.00 and $189.00. Both appeare to be made in
China.

I would be intrested in comments as to should I try to purachase a new
Apple brand battery, if its still available as a service part. I dont need
the 4 lights on the side, do I??

The other battery I have found is from OtherWorld computing. They have a
high power battery at 4500wh for $140. Comments??

Would it be posable to rebuild the existing battery? I have seen your
comments about doing a reset in open firmware, but how would you do this
under OS9?

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Powerbook overheating badly

2004-06-11 Thread gf sciacca
i has a similar issue just recently with my Lombard. In this
instance overheating was caused by the HD continuously seeking even in
sleep mode (one could hear it). The machine however behaved normally if
logging in under a different, newly created user. You might want to try
this step as well before turnung the machine in. I was also advised by
list members to send my HD under warranty for replacement, which I was about
to do, but Hitachi insisted I'd do some troubleshooting first.

cheers, gianfranco

Just wondering if anybody has had this problem with their PB. I have
a 6 month old 15 AL PB. Recently, I came home and found that the PB
was extremely hot to the touch. It had been in sleep mode.
When I lifted it up, it had actually left two burn/char marks in the
table as well as a white mark where the finish of the table was
 damaged.

Noisy drive with DVDs only in PB G4

2004-06-11 Thread Mikael Byström
I had a premier showing of a DVD on my Powerbook G4/400 yesterday and to
my surprise the drive was very noisy, like the disc was clearly hitting
the top of the top case or something. Putting a book under the machine
very carefully and moving it a bit to the left did the trick. The actual
movie play was spotless.
CD's doesn't have this problem at all. Could it be that DVD discs are
thicker or more prone to getting bent or what could it be? Can I adjust
my case somewhat to avoid this problem in the future? How?
Any suggestions are welcome.

I think there can be a number of reasons. I don't think Apple intended
the broken glass to mean anything more specific than a fundamental error

Wallstreet EBM CD Rom Repair

Love your web page on EBM upgrades.

Is there any company that does repairs to the cd rom EBM for the Wallstreet?

Thanks

Re: Wallstreet Questions

2004-06-11 Thread Dave Bonhoff
Hi Ken and all.
I would have to suggest that you avoid BTI batteries. I have found
that their batteries don't provide the run time that Apple batteries
do, and they certainly do not accurately report their remaining charge!
From 4 hrs remaining to 1:30 in an hour, then to 4 min in a flash on
my Lombard and about the same in Clamshell iBooks. Also, they do not
seem to last a year, regardless of use. They all seem to die the same
way in that they just are not recognized by the machine or that they
refuse to charge. Luckily the warranty is 1 year, however BTI's return
policy is rather interesting in that you must FAX them the original
invoice in your name and a cover letter to receive an RMA and
instructions on shipping them the defective product. They will then
inspect and repair/replace the battery at their discretion and return
it to you.

I've been lucky in that the local dealers are willing to order in a
battery (takes about a week) and then exchange it. 3 iBook batteries
have died under warranty and now the one for my Lombard is dead, just
inside the 1 year period... If the warranty isn't approved for my
battery, I'm going to order a high capacity battery from OWC.

While it is great that BTI appears to be good at honoring their
warranty, and that their dealers (that I've dealt with) are willing to
do the leg work for the customers, it is a bother to know that I'll be
without a battery for a couple of weeks every year, would have to buy
another battery to remain truly mobile during that period, and that I
should actually have that second BTI battery to get a decent run time.

That is how I've seen it anyways... [;^)

How to connect Airport disabled Pismo to router wirelessly

2004-06-11 Thread muir mackean
Hi everyone - I have recently upgraded to broadband (in the UK) and my ISP
supplied me with a Speedtouch 570 wireless router and a Speedtouch 110
wireless card to connect my Pismo (400mhz, OSX Panther, 320 MBRAM, 40 GBHD)
to the internet.

Turns out the 110 card is incompatible with Mac, and my Pismo has an
unspecified hardware fault which prevents it from recognising an Airport
card (diagnosed by local Apple store, almost certainly uneconomical to
rectify).

Am finding it very difficult to find alternative kit to connect the Pismo to
the Speedtouch wirelessly - you mention Macs and everyone starts humming and
hawing.

Can anyone out there help or suggest anything ?

Many thanks

This is an article from tidbits.com about a year ago, so the OSX position
may have improved. And of course it's US-centric. Anyway, it might give

Thank you all for your responses! I'm looking around for a Processor

is hosed. For anyone who read my long post previously, the machine has
seen better days!

Yes, bad memory and badly seated memory also. Or any kind of early
Boot
sequence error, like for instance ROM errors.
I think there can be a number of reasons. I don't think Apple intended
the broken glass to mean anything more specific than a fundamental
error
occured (possibly hardware related). I'm sure there is info
somewhere on
the signification of this sound, but I don't recall as it have been so
long since I had such a problem. Last time was with badly seated
RAM/CPU
and stuff like that.

Besides the Airport method, I forgot that you can also simply plug a
USB printer bluetooth adapter into your printer, pair it with your
TI800, and volia! You can now print with no wires up to 33 feet away.
I've got that exact setup with my Epson C84 and my Pismo.

I've just gone wireless myself, but with a HP 5850 (802.11b built-in).
I was seriously considering the Epson C84WN (wireless networking, 802.11b
as well), but HP had a $100 rebate going on.

Print with no wires up to150 feet away? Networked. OS X and 9 :-)

I have had very good experiences with LaCie. I am currently using a D2

Firewire cable into my AlBook and the drive turns on and mounts.
Unmount, and it shuts off. And VERY fast!

Re: Temperature of a G4 15 PB?

I had
not noticed this before. I am using the PB on my desk with nothing

Is that normal?
I think that depends on what's running and for how long. If you keep
Activity Monitor open (even just with the small floating CPU window
showing), I think you'll find a direct correlation between CPU usage
and temperature. Some applications, like MS Word, seem to use the CPU a
lot, and some web sites do as well.

Right now, with CPU usage pretty low, I'm reading 119.8F on my 15
AlBook. When I was using ThermographX (before it stopped working with
the latest OS updates) I often saw temps (from some of 4 different
sensors) as high or higher than what you mention above.

I use CoolPads (Podium on my desk, and the smaller travel one
elsewhere) to keep more air circulating below and around the PB. It's
definitely too hot for my legs when used that way, and the CoolPad
(although not designed for the lap) helps, although my legs still get
warm.
