G3 900Mhz 12 iBook opinions
OK, I am looking for opinions on these iBooks. My girlfriend has been having fits with the screen on her 12 800Mhz model, Applecare has had it 6 or so times. The reason I ask, is I am getting rid of my iMac 15 800 (superdrive) and wanted a Tibook, but I have an offer to trade the 900 + a G4 533 tower. So what problems if any have people had? Would this be a good deal? I really want a Tibook around 500-667 or better, so opinions on those would be great too! Thanks!!! Pat -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... It sounds as if your hard disk has serious problems. Try erasing the partition in Disk Utility, from the Panther installation CD. If you can, it would be even better to reformat the entire disk. Then, install 10.3. Try to reboot. If you can boot, run Disk Utility from the 10.3 installation and repair permissions on the OS X disk/partition. Then, go to Software Update and get the 10.3.4 updater. Install it and see if it works. I'm really suspecting that your hard drive is causing those problems. What hard disk do you have, BTW? Yes I have good backups. I have wiped and reformatted twice this year, I think the next time I go through all that it will be on a new drive. I am still using the original 10G drive I think it's a Toshiba. Got any suggestions on a good one? I don't need a huge one for my purposes. Thanks for your input. Verizon seems to be having problems getting email through, I could not access it at all last night. I did buy the IBM/Toshiba TravelStar 40GB 5400rpm a little while ago. It's very quiet and is quite faster than the 20GB that was in the Pismo when I got it or the original 6 or 10GB. You should be able to find it for around $100 these days, maybe less. You didn't get any error when you did the format of the drive? Was that a long time ago? I'm talking about a format, not an erase, BTW. On 6/30/04 8:49 PM, Gregory Cortelyou [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I hope this is not OT since it is more of an OS issue than hardware (maybe) but I need some help. I have had serious problems on my Pismo since installing 10.3 when it came out. I actually got it working finally after a total wipe of my drive and all was fine until I upgraded to 10.3.4 when I could not boot at all. That's a long, sad story and I am not going to tell it. I ended up back at 10.2.8 and all was great. But I really missed Panther so I tried and it did install but some pre-binding did not get done apparently as I cannot use several Apple apps at all including mail and itunes. Also I have no sound in the finder. Sound works in some other apps. Disk Utility run via the Panther CD now shows several orphaned siblings and other directory problems that it cannot fix. I ran Disk Warrior and now Disk Utility stops quick saying it cannot continue as hash table full. There is no info on hash tables on the Apple support site. The computer runs, enough apps work to make it usable, but I am wanting it to be as it should be. I have often suspected that my RAM is of a brand not compatible with 10.3 and wonder if changing it would help. I have 2 sticks totalling 512 MB. Or maybe the hard drive is just not able to keep itself in proper order? Anybody got any advice? Greg, since we have don't have lots of Pismo owners complaining about problems with Panther we have to assume the problem is your computer. Two things about your issue stick out: 1) you have no trouble with Jaguar but 2) do have trouble with Panther and did have from the very beginning apparently, not just with the most recent update. Had you reported problems getting back to 10.2.8 I'd have immediately jumped on the hard drive. But since you didn't I'm pushing the drive down to suspect number 2 and bumping RAM up to suspect number 1. When we were doing our Panther upgrades we had a couple computers that refused to upgrade - but had been find with Jaguar. In one case we basically 'lucked' into a hard drive problem we'd been unaware of - but this computer refused the downgrade to Jaguar, unlike yours. For the others, we swapped RAM and found that to be the problem. Even so, I'm not confident enough to just say Order more memory! so I hope you have a friend whose computer has compatible RAM or a friendly Mac dealer who will quickly check out the RAM for you. Note: I had my own RAM problems when I bought an AlBook. The first stick of 512 was obviously bad. The second seemed fine until I tried to upgrade to Panther. That stick tested out ok using Apple's hardware test CD but was obviously the cause of the problem. david -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I reformatted using the original OS 9 system disks. I used the zero all data option and verified the drive after that and it appeared to be OK. While still in 10.2.8 last week it was still showing no errors. After doing the basic upgrade to Panther is when I noticed problems. I had Panther running fine before but it was the 10.3.4 update that knocked me out. After the reformat and the new problems, I thought maybe doing an archive and install would fix things, but the installer will not run because of the errors on the drive. Re: New Mac(s) for Work
I am starting a new job and now head up the Marketing and Creative services. I have the opportunity to request new hardware I feel we need. Since the entire department currently runs all graphic work from Dells, I want to request some Macs to simplify the graphics work and eliminate any design shifts when going to prepress from conversion from Windows to Mac. My question to the listers: I am considering a new G5, but the price of one of these plus display, I can get 3 top of the line emacs. I understand the power difference between the systems, but would it be so dramatic that we could not work efficiently with emacs (or imacs) instead? Another consideration would be Powerbooks, but here the price factor is not as dramatic and we currently would not need mobility. Graphics would consist of desktop publishing using full Adobe suite, (maybe Quark), Macromedia Studio for web, and probably some light video editing with Final Cut Express (this may change in future to include Final Cut Pro). Any thoughts, or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Best Regards, Wayne [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Powerbook G4, airport card cable, yanked off connector...
Hi, Has anybody else here done what I did: while installing the airport card in the battery compartment, and trying to get that cable to reach, rip the metal connector right off? Apple said it would be a $650++ repair. Good lord. The wire in that antenna cable is EXTREMELY fine gauge, I can see why it broke. I stripped some of the plastic off of the now-exposed wire, and just jammed it back inside the connector. I get reception: three bars right next to my access point. I presume I should get four, but this isn't bad for the repair I performed. My question is, if you have done this, were you able to solder it back on? Did the solder take to the metal of the connector? I think that if I heat up the connector, put a bit of solder inside, and stick the cable in the melted solder, it should set. That connector is not insulated; all parts that I tested have continuity. So soldering needn't be terribly precise. I'm also considering soldering a bit of new wire inside the connector, and then the existing antenna wire to that new wire. Re: Slow internet on Tibook?
I have cable internet at home. And I've realized that my speeds are considerably slower than my parents broadband and my father-in-law's broadband connection. I have a Tibook 500. Is there something wrong with my powerbook that is slowing things down? I have Panther also. Is there out of date hardware that needs replaced? Cable speeds are variable rate depending on how many users in the immediate area are online at once. If you and a few neighbors were the only ones on, you would see much faster speeds than your in-laws. There are other factors such as types and quality of lines and speeds of the servers you are going to, but generally it is the number of users accessing the cable network that slows it down. I have Adelphia cable and on Monday Tuesday nights, there is a considerable slow down that increases towards the end of the week. The weekends can be very fast or as slow as Mondays (depending on the time, peak hours are slower, early or late are very fast). The only non-varying broadband is DSL, this will always (relatively) keep its bandwidth that you agree to purchase. The flip side of this is you will never go faster, and this can be where cable is superior as long as your area is not too crowded with users and you can see these speeds. For me, it was very inexpensive to add Adelphia cable internet to my existing cable service. Hope this helps, I am sure there will be many other points from other listers on this topic. Wireless question
Hi, I bought a Netgear 108 Mbps Wireless PC card for my Pismo (400/OS X 10.3.4). It did not say anything on the box about being Mac compatible however, I figured I could just go to Netgear's Web site and download whatever drivers I need. Unfortunately, there's nothing about Macs on their Web site. Do I need to return this card for a slower Linksys or Belkin card or is there a way to make it work? Windoze Explorer style file browser for OS X ???
While OS X has come a long way since OS 9 when it comes to displaying folders and files, it is still not as good as the Windoze Explorer due to the way that there are two parts to the expanding trees making it much quicker and easier to move stuff around. I am a very disorganized hoarder of stuff and if I don't start sorting my stuff out soon I may as well wipe my disks... Does anyone know of such a program ? You could check on AirPort Express to see if it specifically supports 802.11b or regular AirPort. I think it does, but I'm not sure. At $129, that's pretty cheap considering what you might end up paying on eBay for a snow one, unless they significantly dropped in price. I would recommend you stay away from the first generation AirPort base stations, known sometimes as the graphite. Their internal capacitors tend to blow after a little while. I had 2 of them that I had to replace. So far, the snow one works fine. -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin AIM/iChat: LaurentDaudelinhttp://nemesys.dyndns.org Logiciels Nemesys Software mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] field servoid [play on `android'] /fee'ld ser'voyd/ n.: Representative of a field service organization (see field circus). Is there something I can do (few skills) to fix it, or do I have to go to Apple? How do you know the screen flickers if you close the lid? Since the PowerBook goes to sleep when you close the lid, I would assume it's normal for the screen to go dark, unless I'm missing something... -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin AIM/iChat: LaurentDaudelinhttp://nemesys.dyndns.org Logiciels Nemesys Software mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] careware /keir'weir/ n.: A variety of shareware for which either the author suggests that some payment be made to a nominated charity or a levy directed to charity is included on top of the distribution charge.
