wireless router

2004-09-06 Thread Kathryn Odell
I am the proud owner of a PowerBook laptop--15"! I'm really enjoying
it! My question---I'm currently using a NetGear 11.b wireless router,
but I would like to upgrade to g for the speed. Has anyone done this? I
noticed that you can get a NetGear for about $29. Has anyone tried it?

Thanks for your comments,

iTunes and Wall Street and OS 9.1?

2004-09-06 Thread illovox
HI Gary,

iTunes 1, 1.1, 2, 2.1 & 2.2 all install on any powerpc mac--any with
9.0...and 1 & 1.1 will install on 8.6 with a hack floating out there. No
built in USB required. Can do it on a 6100, a 1400, etc. etc. iTunes 2 will
not install on any nubus mac, including pb 1400, but will on any pci mac or
laptop...

I use iTunes on several computers, only one of which has native USB.
They toss that in to avoid having to deal with third party USB cards
and any potential problems.

I am using it on a WallStreet but it's running OS X. But I've used
it on a Kanga (Original G3 PowerBook), OS 9.1, with NO USB at all.

A: Wow a direct question by name and I am so self-conscious of my
innate ignorance. Anyway, by now, B0b (sp?--is that pronounced
bOHb or bzerob?) you have heard a lot from a lot of people and I have
learned some things.

One thing I can repeat is that 802.11(b) probably does go
farther than (g).

I thought that the "DS" was something that D-Link used for
their "super fast" version of their card. Apparently it means:
"Direct Sequence-compliant wireless network interface card" and it
is offered for interasys cards.

As apparently everyone else knows, this is an old crappy standard.
Anyway, the D-Link "plus" cards that allow you to use their
faster proprietary system when their router is available. As far as
I can tell these cards default down to the the normal standards
otherwise.

I really have lots of skepticism about all this stuff. What
I do know is that caching and signal selection and switching and
conflict resolution and so forth are critical for wireless networks
and this guy at Ohio State came up with the first solution to make
802.11(b) actually work even thought other faster standards were
already out.

Apple licensed some of this stuff from this guy. I don't
know about other people but there are huge performance disparities
with all of this equipment based upon signal strength & caching and
so forth.

Just make sure, if you have some old macs and printers, get
stuff that transmits appletalk packets. Some D--link things don't.

A: I have heard some people say they work OK when you have no card
slot,--like Will above who has an iBook--but I would always look for
an ethernet dongle (do they make them for laptops?) before a USB

Re: PB G4/400 LCD...help!

2004-09-06 Thread Luis Autrique
Are you working with battery power or is it plugged? I remember
that some PB 400 and 500 had problems with the battery connector that
in some instances it lost contact in cases when handling the computer
with one hand... It might just be that the battery contact becomes
loose when you move the computer, and it goes into sleep mode, and it
is not able to wake up because there is no power.

Just a thought

- by itself, not moving it...it pretty much works flawless. But, if I

Just "Poof"...off she goes.
- Yesterday, I had it on and the display went to sleep...it wouldn't

the

- this is the main problem...it'll be working fine but if you move it,
the screen will freeze (mouse/keyboard no response)...
I've read around and it seems it could either be the cable that feeds
the screen, a damaged logic board or the inverter board (not sure what
that is)
Can anyone helppinpoint, suggest, point me in a direction, suggest
sites, etc, etc?

Kevin
Well, if the keyboard/cursor freezes on screen, that probably rules
out the
video cable. There might be something loose in it, so, if it was me, I
would
open it up and check all cable connections, specially the hard drive
which
will cause the machine to lock up if it is suddenly unplugged. If all
connections are good and it still exhibits the same problems, then
you're
probably looking at another motherboard...

I am not sure as to what version of iTunes you're referring to, but I have versions
(1.1 and up) of iTunes on my Wallstreet, my 3400c and my 2400c. None of which run OSX.

The 3400 runs OS 8.6, in fact. It needed a hack, but everything else is OS9.

iTunes and Wall Street and OS 9.1?

2004-09-06 Thread Gary Goldberg
Per the Apple iTunes website you need a Mac
with built-in USB ports to use iTunes. I only
have USB functionality through a Belkin PC
card adapter.

Has anyone been able to use iTunes with
a Wall Street w/o OS X?

Apparently the Dell Truemobile 1100 card is the same as the Cisco 340

would be really cool to try the cisco drivers with it in a Mac. Also
there is mention mention about the RoamAbout card.

I don't know about the 1100, but I can tell you that the Truemobile 1150
is actually a re-badged Orinoco Gold. I have one, and have used it with
the IOExperts driver under OS 9 in my 5300, 3400, and I think in my old
Wallstreet.

Re: iBook PRAM settings

2004-09-06 Thread Jim Scott
iBooks do not have a PRAM battery, Instead, they use either AC power or
battery power. That's why, if you take longer than 15-20 seconds to change
the battery when it's running on battery power, the PRAM memory goes into
default mode.

Explain the 802.11b Card Description

2004-09-06 Thread Bob
While my keyboard is already heated up replying to other messages,
let me re-ask a question that I asked a week or so ago, but didn't
receive any replies to.

A couple of people have recently mentioned the Lucent/Orinoco WiFi
card available from http://www.wagenermedia.com. The card is
described on their web-site as a 802.11DS RoamAbout card.

What's a 802.11DS card? I know it's a wireless PCMCIA card. But
what's the "DS" stand for? And I've seen the "RoamAbout" description
before, but I'm not sure what exactly it refers to.

Thanx,

B0b

No. See below.

>seen it in the past and now I'm wondering, how this was set up?

Well it depends on what email client you are using. I confess to
being pretty one dimensional when it comes to email. I started out
using Eudora back when Old Yeller was just a pup and I have never
used anything else. I don't know enough about Apple Mail App or the
other email clients that are available, to keep my feet warm in the
desert in August. So I can't tell you how to change yours unless you
are using Eudora.

But basically, that line is called an Attribution line or Attribution
string. Your attributing the subsequent quoted material to the
following person(s). You just need to find out how (reading the
owner's manual would probably tell you) to change it in your email
client.

I view attribution strings as inverse .sigs. You can make them your
own and personalize them. I simply added "The National Enquirer
reports" at the beginning of my default attribution string.

BTW kudos for modifying the Subject line of your message and not
hijacking the previous thread. I know a lot of Internet veterans who
don't do that.

One final comment: Whenever asking for help or advice, always include
the pertinent information that will allow others to offer their
assistance -- application(s) if relevant & version; OS version;
hardware and model if relevant.

Hope I've helped some,

Bob
