Re: Disk maintenence tools

2004-11-01 Thread E. Moorhead
The attempted comparison of TTPro with DW does NOT Compute,
so-to-speak.

It would be as to compare the Sky with a Thought.
They are two completely different, and indispensable Tools, meant for
dissimilar objectives.

The desire to DE-FRAGMENT an OS/X'd Hard Drive, as one would an
OS/9, is to be STRONGLY AVOIDED!

UNIX, the underpinnings of OS/X, handles FILES, and everything else,
for that matter, very differently from OS/9, and all before. It DOES
NOT lend itself to 'De-Fragmentation', as we knew it in Pre OS/X
Operating Systems.

Any unwise attempt to 'FORCE' OS/X through this exercise, as
SIMANiaTEC does, can cause drastic, and potentially irreversible damage
to a SYSTEM.

Fragmentation, as we use to know it Pre OS/X, does not present a
problem under UNEX. SHUTDOWN, (as adverse to RESTART), and START-UP
from Cold Boot, pretty-much handles any 'House-keeping' OS/X requires;:

http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/macjanitor.html
a FREE Application, handles the rest.
Above is an extremely general, and superficial 'overview?)' of OS/X
'De-Fragg' question.

The DEFINITIVE Word on this, and ALL things MAC/OS/X is to be found
here:

http://www.macattorney.com/ts.html
Surely, if there is a MAC GOD, this is HE! From His lips, to APPLE's
ear. If He doesn't cover it, you don't NEED to know it. You can NOT
spend a wasted moment here.

This should be Your very First, and Singular BookMark for ALL things
MAC!

Your very first dollar spent on Your MAC, after purchase, should be on
DISKWARRIOR and TECHTOOL PRO.

MH 2cents worth...

For what it does, yes, it is the best IMHO. It doesn't
exactly match the feature set of Techtool though.
It seems to focus on recovery more that preventive.
DiskWarrior is a life saver and fixes and rebuilds your fragmented
directory (which happens in time with normal use on all computers)...
a unique solution and supremely effective. The latest version, 3.02 is
the only one that works with OS 10.3.5. The previous versions came
with a separate disk defragger... unfortunately they no longer make it
available on the DW CD. If it still exists, you would have to buy it
separately. Techtool is a way to go. But whatever else you have for
disk maintenance/recovery, you should invest in DW because no other
utility does the type of fix it does. It has recovered a zonked drive
many times for me... I love it.

PS- I'm not affiliated with Alsoft, the maker of DiskWarrior.

Like others pointed out, Unix, at the core, has its own defragmenting

You could probably do a search on the Internet to find out more about the
defrag features of any flavor of Unix.

Great point to know regarding when the fan turns on in your system.
So, it appears that I should attempt running OS 9 on the system for
a while and see what happens with the temperature and fan during
use in the same situations as in OS X. If the reason the fan is not

solve the problem.
Last night I decided to start running OS 9.1 again on the laptop.
After an hour of use, Gauge PRO was reporting 78 Celcius, 172

172 was the low point where Bob mentioned his fan does come on.
I moved the laptop atop a pillow, for it's ability to hold the heat

working properly and still at 78 Celcius.

I'm going to try and find some more CPU intensive applications to see
if I can get the temperature go up higher. All of this is so I can
determine if the fan is actually working as it's supposed to.

G4 500mhz upgrade for Pismo

2004-11-01 Thread Herbert Goodfriend
Christmas is around the corner and i'm thinking about getting it
myself. I just want some input from people about their experiences
with the upgrade. So many people are telling me how much better their
Pismo is in terms of rigidity and usefulness so I'm thinking about
extending my computer's service another three years. :-P
--mark--

Mark,
I got the 550MHz upgrade from Daystar Technology. I honestly haven't
used the machine enough to give a thorough evaluation (I gave the
machine to my parents), but there were no problems. Also, their
service and communication were very good.

The FastMac service is $40 cheaper but you have to take out the
processor board yourself and send it to them. Also, their turnaround
time is much slower; I used Daystar because I was in a hurry. I am
going to upgrade my own machine shortly and I will not be in a hurry
so I will try FastMac to save the $40.

I have seen only good feedback on both FastMac and Daystar.

I remember seeing a couple of companies on the net selling compatible paint

I would imagine that if you search a little bit, you'll be able to find
 them...

Thanks for the response, Laurent.

I remember one of them - TiPaint. What a ripoff that one was. I ordered
(luckily on my credit card), but spent an inordinate amount of time trying
to chase it down. I won't go into a long spiel about it, but I've got a
story on that one.

I'm hoping that some enterprising person on the list has searched for and
found a source of the paint that will match. I've tried two colors, so far.
One is pretty close, but I'm still not satisfied. Maybe I should leave well
enough alone. :-)

Thanks,
Jerry

All Newer Tech utilities are now at a new (no pun intended) location:

You'll find Gauge Pro 1.1 under utilities.

For our American listmembers (aka the majority),

As we head into a very controversial election here in the United States I
must state the following:

No political commentary will be tolerated on any of the LEM lists. Posting
political commentary will result in an immediate banning. No matter what
side you stand on, do not post it here. This will help insure a happy list
through the election.

This is a zero tolerance campaign.

It's just as easy to download something like Hymn, and convert them to
m4a files.
If you have an iPod. If not, your SOL. I tried it before having an
iPod and
it never worked. Since I now have an iPod, Hymn works fine...

I don't want this thread to degenerate into whether copyrights are fair or
not, but I think Apple is fairly flexible in the way they manage the songs
you buy from the store. Essentially, Apple is just trying to prevent users
from making copies of the songs they buy to their friend. If they didn't
have those policies, they would have never had the collaboration of the
major distribution companies.

But, like I said, without using any illegal or unethical program, you can
still burn CDs and there is nothing that prevent you from importing songs
from CDs...

creationism n.: The (false) belief that large, innovative software designs
can be completely specified in advance and then painlessly magicked out of
the void by the normal efforts of a team of normally talented programmers.
In fact, experience has shown repeatedly that good designs arise only from
evolutionary, exploratory interaction between one (or at most a small
handful of) exceptionally able designer(s) and an active user population --
and that the first try at a big new idea is always wrong. Unfortunately,
because these truths don't fit the planning models beloved of management,
they are generally ignored.
