OT: Clarified--Airport Grey BS and Airport Express BS? Sony Playstation 2?
After reading my email to the list, I could see where there could be confusion. Yes, what I was wondering is if I purchased an Airport Express BS, could it act as an extender for my Airport Grey BS? On Apple¹s Website it states it can only do this with an Express or Extreme BS. However, I thought I heard other people doing what I want to do without problems and wanted to get your guys¹ opinion. My reason for wanting to do this is because I want to play online games with a Sony Playstation 2. Of course I would need to connect my PS 2 via ethernet to something. So my second question was could I plug a PS2 to the Airport Express BS and get online that way? Any information would be most appreciated. Michael I think what Michael means is, could it [the AirPort Express base station] talk to the grey AirPort base station?. The answer depends on what is meant by talk. Michael, do you intend to use this as a repeater station to extend the range of your network, as a wireless bridge to enable your PS2 to connect to the wireless network, or something entirely different? I connect a Sony Playstation 2 to the Airport Express BS and play online games? 3. Does the grey Airport BS need to be upgraded to an Airport Extreme/Express BS? Not a pro in networking but I really want to play online games with a Sony Playstation 2. Any input would be most appreciated. Unless you have some special model of television set, it won't be able to talk to your base station, grey or express. I'm not sure about how a Playstation connects to the Internet but I would assume that you can probably connect it to any base station that provides DHCP. No AirPort Base Station can be upgraded to a later model. You have to buy a whole new base station if you're not happy with the one you have... -Laurent. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Almost Dead Wallstreet
I am working on my Wallstreet. First it had a bad dc card (plug moved up and down) It wouldn't charge right so I replaced it. With that in place I put in the batteries and they would not charge. I thought maybe the loose plug caused a problem with the power and charge card that the batteries plug into. I also noticed that the CD Rom drive had stop spinning up. So I ordered and new card for that and I installed it tonight. Still no charge on batteries or CDRom. Now during my upgrades I decided to install 10.2 which went fine and then I restarted and now I get the disallowed symbol. The whole sequence is Power up I see the happy Mac computer I hear two little noises from the CDRom The computer screen goes black and I hear the start-up chime again I see the grey apple I see the disallowed symbol I went into firmware and reset And it still it will not boot. If I could force it to start back into 9 but with out the CDRom drive I cannot see any way. Could someone please give me some advice on how to get my powerbook back without buying a new part each week just to find out that that wasn't it Thanks in advance, Sad in Ohio. From: Kathryn Odell [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Sony CRX830E upgrade for Pismo Date: Mon, 29 Nov 2004 15:12:55 -0800 I'm considering getting the Sony CRX830E CDR-DVD for my Pismo expansion bay. I have found it at a few Mac parts sites, and it's pretty pricey--around $180. However, when I google the part number, I find lots of places that sell it for much less--like $70. Would there be a difference in the drive between Mac and PC vendors? Is there anything I I bought this exact same drive for around $100 a few months ago, and installed it in my pismo to replace the defunct LG CD/DVD drive. Hello All
I just became the owner of an iBook G4, I bought it last Friday at our local Apple Store here in Miami. I have to say that I'm really happy with it. It's a 12 incher with a 1.2 gig G4 processor and it's fast. My main desktop is a 20 inch G5 iMac. I've been using Macs since 2001 and have become a MacAddictwhich is my favorite magazine. I also belong to the iMac list and the G list here. Just thought I'd introduce myself. Tim Collier Exterminate all rational thought. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Hallo all. Got myself a WS II (the one with the 14 lcd) and want to have the option to use an external monitor. The VGA out only appears to work under OS9. Dead modem on my Graphite base station
Help. I believe that I have a dead modem on my Graphite base station, after a recent storm. The wireless network works, and I tested the phone line and it also works. But I cannot get out onto the internet. And all 3 laptops at our house hang for a minute after trying, before turning loose to accept further input. I have taken the Base station apart and cannot see any burns or shorts. But I thought that I would submit this to the team before trying to buy another modem to replace this faulty one. Re: Pbk G3 reformat help
Hello, I have just suscribed today and hope to find some help for my newly acquired Powerbook G3, I think it's called a Lombard as it has a bronze keyboard and 400Mhz. I won it off ebay...and it came with OSX but no disks. I really don't want OSX as all my programs work just fine for me in 8.6. I want to erase the pb and clean install the 8.6. except I can't get the pb to boot off the cd. any help from any mac/god out there? or some shop I might drive to for help. Kristina in NW IN (chicagoland) and a mac user since my SE 30 in 89... Try restarting your PB from the OS9 system that¹s installed on your machine. (System Preferences/startup Drive.) Once restarted select the 8.6 CD as your nest startup drive. I don't think X will allow you to select a drive with less than 9. Why does the disallowed symbol come up. What does it mean? Bad or unbootable OS X install. Not enough ram? Bad ram? Nope. Bad RAM might have caused your install to fail - I missed the start of the thread I did get it to install and it ran fine, I booted into 9 to work on some older applications and when I switched back to 10 I get the disallowed and now I cannot even get it to boot to the CDRom or back into 9. Why can't you get it to boot of a CD ? You put a proper OS 9 CD in and hold the C key down ? The only thing that I can think to do would be to put the HD into another computer and tell it to start from 9 and then put it back. I just have to find a computer to put it into. Were both on one partition ? IIRC there is a way via open firmware to select a different boot partition. -- Best wishes Malcolm Cornelius - The Powerbook Fanatic http://www.pbfanatic.co.uk -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... From a practical viewpoint, just to be safe, I'd recommend 'demoting' your memory to the lower amount to do other System upgrades, where a Permissions Repair is part of the normal install This is the same issue that I addressed back in mid-October in reference to installing Panther on a Wallstreet. I indicated to Stanton Mitrany that a number of (but not all) Wallstreet users had difficulties installing Panther when their Wallstreet had more than 384 MB of RAM. This was questioned by a few list-members. So, although yours is a slightly different PowerBook, it's good to see someone else support RAM issue with personal experience. I'm sure that there are a number of causes for the disallowed symbol. But the one I ran into when I installed OS 10.2 on my Wallstreet was that I had an external hard drive connected to the PB via a PCMCIA card. I kept getting the circle with the red slash through it when trying to install OS X, until I ejected the PC card. So, if you have **any** peripherals connected to your Wallstreet, disconnect all of them and try the install again. I'm not saying this *is* your problem, but it's worth a try. Re: VGA out on my wallstreet
Dave NovaK said: The VGA out only appears to work under OS9. I primarily use 10.2.8 (like I'm doing right now), but I get nothing from the port when using 10.2.8. What gives? It works under OS X. In some cases you may need to reboot. PS: Does anyone have a spare logic board for me? My battery doesn't charge anymore and I'm pretty sure it isn't the battery. Already replaced the DC board to no avail. I have a WSII 300mhz. Have you tested with another battery? Do you have other problems with the Power? It could more likely be the PMU-card acting up and that needs replacing or as I told someone else onlist with similar problems: I'd do these steps (far from complete): 1. Check if you have a bad connection from the battery to the charger board by taking out the battery and firmly pushing it back in. See if that helps. If so, you may want to check the torx screws on the battery side and see if they need tightening or if a few are missing. 2. Check if the shielding tape on the inside of the bottom case, near the opening where you put the power supply, have come a little lose so it touches the power supply connector when it is inserted. I had this problem with a WS II before and the solution was to take apart the machine more or less completely and reattach the tape that was loose. I put other thin tape on top of it to hold it in place. If you have another WS to test the battery in, to rule out the battery itself, then that's certainly helpful. Equally if you have another battery to test in your WS. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Sony CRX830E upgrade for Pismo
Thanks for your input. Did you have to do the soldering in the drive sled? I'm considering getting the Sony CRX830E CDR-DVD for my Pismo expansion bay. I believe it works for either PC or Mac, at any rate it works fine in my laptop. Seth -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Sony CRX830E upgrade for Pismo
Thanks for your helpful information! --Kate I'm considering getting the Sony CRX830E CDR-DVD for my Pismo expansion bay. snip Absolutely no difference if it's the bare drive only. Check to see if the Mac dealers happen to sell it already installed in the expansion bay unit (doubtful). I've used this same drive in a Pismo and it works great. I hacked the Authoring Support plugin for OS 9, which you can download from the xlr8yourmac web site. With it, the drive is recognized in 9 by Disk Burn and iTunes. In X you can use Patchburn 3 (free dowload) to do the same thing. snip Highly recommended at $70, especially if you have a modified expansion bay unit; though it'll work okay even without that.
