Is the 2nd CD an original one or a copy? Did you notice if the install would
fail at the same place and if so, what was the installer installing?

Gates's Law: "The speed of software halves every 18 months." This oft-cited
law is an ironic comment on the tendency of software bloat to outpace the
every-18-month doubling in hardware capacity per dollar predicted by Moore's
Law. The reference is to Bill Gates; Microsoft is widely considered among
the worst if not the worst of the perpetrators of bloat.

I don't remember where you got that Wallstreet but from the problems you
mention, it seems that it was abused quite a bit. It definitely shouldn't
feel doggey when comparing it to a 2400, if running the same OS version, of
course. With all the problems you list, I would say that the hard drive is
probably is bad shape too...

Blue Screen of Death n.: [common] This term is closely related to the older
Black Screen of Death but much more common (many non-hackers have picked it
up). Due to the extreme fragility and bugginess of Microsoft Windows,
misbehaving applications can readily crash the OS (and the OS sometimes
crashes itself spontaneously). The Blue Screen of Death, sometimes decorated
with hex error codes, is what you get when this happens. (Commonly
abbreviated BSOD.)

Remnants after total obliteration. Originated first by id software in the

OSX 10.3 install fails on disk 2

2004-12-22 Thread Rad Craig
I got my little sis a Pismo for college, for xmas. I just got it and
am installing 10.3 on it. I blew the drive away, formatted OSX
extended (journaled) and started from scratch. I unchecked all the
languages and printer drivers.

Disk 1 finished without problems. I reboot, get promted to insert disk
2 and it gets almost done, to about 9 minutes remaining, then says
something like 'errors were encountered during installation' and the
button changes to 'quit'.

I have done this twice now, with two different Disk #2's and got the
same error both times.

After the first install, I was doing the software update, which was
quite a list, and it hosed up on the last item in the list, which is
all the 10.3 updates for OSX (like 97MB). Then it would no longer
connect to the internet via ethernet. I restarted twice, repaired disk
permissions, but that didn't fix anything. I mounted the disk 2 and
ran the install.pkg manually and it finished without problems, but
still acted flaky. I tried to reboot on a recovery CD I have, but when
I selected it in 'startup disk' and clicked reboot, it would just sit
there and never reboot. So I closed startup disk and restarted it via
the apple menu, held the 'c' key down during boot, and it ignored it
and booted to the HD like normal.

So after all these strange things, I decided I'd try it all again, used
a different disk 2 cd, but got the same results.

This is a Pismo, 400mhz, 11.2G HD, 192MB.
Any suggestions? I've got to have this thing all setup for her by xmas
eve.

Re: Pismo crack

2004-12-22 Thread Stuart Saunders
Kate,
I doubt that your Pismo is breaking up. Both my Pismos have cracks -
one at the wedding line in front of the trackpad clicker, where the
plastic rejoins after flowing around the clicker hole. The other one
has had a crack in the left palmrest since nearly new - i tripped over
the ethernet cord and the Pismo went flying. Only other effect was that
the power cord became easy to insert! To prevent this happening again,
I now run any wires (ethernet, power, phone etc) around the legs of the
table or desk 2 - 3 times before crossing the floor. Worst you can get
then is a broken wire, instead of a broken Powerbook.

If you are still worried about it, do you have a picture of the crack?
Any change? Any idea what caused it?

Regards,
Stuart.

the computer at this point? Has anyone else had this problem?

No DHCP on Walstreet Ethernet (was not-so-dead)

I found the RJ45 jack on the back of the Wallstreet.
Plugged in direct rather than my Falleron PCMCIA card.
Turned on Apple Ethernet Ext.
TCP selects Ethernet but DHCP produces no numbers.
Suggestions.

Does your workplace network use a proxy-server? That would explain

Re: PC card transfer between powerbook 1400 and 12" G4 powerbook

2004-12-22 Thread Andrew
I have found the USB controller on the 12" G4 (I have
the 1GHz model) to be picky. It works great with most
of my USB peripherals, but with an external hard drive
is would write at full speed, but freeze and
eventually lock the entire machine if I tried to read.

I replaced that USB2.0 case with a combo USB
2.0/FireWire case that one works fine through both
interfaces.

The moral of the story is that at least my 12" PB is
picky about what goes into the USB port. Why not
connect the two computers with an ethernet crossover
cable, or if the 1400 has no ethernet card, moce the
files to the iMac and then connect the iMac and 12" G4
with an ethernet crossover cable. Probably your
easiest bet.

2004-12-22 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
My Dad just got a new 12" G4 Aluminum powerbook and is having problems
transferring data from his powerbook 1400.
He has been using a Lexar USB card reader to move data from the 1400 to
his iMac (OS 8.1 and 9.2.2 respectively).
However when he plugs the card reader into the G4 'book it doesn't work.
I'm suspecting that the particular card reader isn't supported in OSX.
Has anyone got any other suggestions?
Any recommendations on card readers known to work with OSX?
Thanks

Thanks for the quick response. Yeah, might be a silly question, but

It is like Ethernet. It just doesn't matter if the computer is running
Windows, Mac OS or AmigaDOS for that matter, so long as the ethernet

The only trouble you might have is if you've restricted the Base

need new electrical wiring to plug in a PC versus a Mac.

YES! Apple made it that easy on a recent update - tres cool. Since she is at
the other end, it'll be a charge for her to see you control her mac. Don't
forget to set up the password.

If that's the case then, in other words, Apple Remote Desktop is a
replacement for Share My Desktop, no?

Yeehaww yes!

Do I then run Chicken, fill in her IP address and connect?

Cooking with chicken -
#1 -- insert ip address of mom's location (generally speaking of course, I
take it that you've got this part solid)
#2 -- insert default port for Apple Remote Desktop -- 5900 (on some VNC apps
you will be inserting IP.ADD.RE.SS::PORT, i.e. 24.112.23.111::5900)
#3 -- definitely use a password, and also - does mom have a hardware
firewall (i.e. router/gateway)? If her connection is direct from DSL/CABLE
modem to her Mac, then her OS X will handle the firewall. If not, then the
router needs to manage the forwarding of port 5900 to the Mac's local
network IP address as I mentioned in my first post.
#4 -- click shared display and save password, also, have mom set her desktop
to 640x480
#5 -- connect! After seeing how it goes, try adjusting her display
properties while you are in control, you will see the results of your
experiments immediately and find the sweet spot.

What about Password? Is any needed?

Definitely -- her computer is wide open for outside control, especially with
all of the options checked in the Apple Remote Desktop access privileges
panel.

Thanks **so** much for this info. In all my searching around for a
solution, no one ever mentioned the on-board Apple Remote Desktop as
an
option.

No problem - happy to share, I love it. I've bought a tablet PC on eBay to
use for a VNC client to control both my cube and my desktop PC. I caught the
ARD 'cause it was mentioned oh so briefly when the update occurred and I may
have found more info on it through some research regarding chicken of the
vnc.

Mixed wireless network

2004-12-22 Thread Brian Rule
I currently have a limited wireless network- my Slot loading iMac is
networked to an Airport Extreme Base Station via an ethernet cable and
my iBook connects via airport extreme. In the coming days I'd like to
add my desktop PC to the list by giving it a wireless card.
What I'm wondering is, will the firewall on the base station still work
with the PC added? Will there be any incompatabilities adding this PC
to the system? In the end, there might be a second PC added to the
network, but I'm not sure yet. Any feedback or prior experience would
be of great help.
Thanks,
Brian

Hi, and thanks for the info! I have not been able to find the OS9.x driver
online. Could you give me a url? Or is the file small enough to email?
Thanks much.

I like Entourage but agree that all eggs in one basket can be dangerous.
I have had a few dangerous moments with corrupted databases using
Entourage. I like speed and function with the art of simplicity.
Entourage really is bloatware, even though it has great tools. I want a
program that does just email, and does it well. I am currently using
Mailsmith and really love it. I guess you use what gets the job done for
you.
