Re: Wallstreet queries

2005-01-03 Thread Luis Sequeira
Hello,
I have just acquired a Wallstreet (292 mhz, 64 mb ram, 5 GB hd with
OS 9.1) which has a yellow tinge along the bottom of the screen for
about half an inch. Is there a cure, besides a new screen?
Also, the Re-set of: Shift, Control, FN and Power does not work and I
have had to pull the plug out to shut it off after it froze. Are
there other suggestions for a way to shut it off?
Thanks.
Actually, it should be: Cmd-Ctrl-Power

The cited combination (shift-fn-ctrl-power) should shut it down - it's
what's written on the back of the Wallstreet (under the port-cover
door, next to the ADB port) and it's always worked for me.

(And I used it a LOT because my Wallstreet had a freezing problem -
still will, when I replace the RAM module I contributed to my father's
tray-loader iMac - hardly worth the money for the new RAM, except that
I feel much better having this old machine in danger zones such as the
kitchen counter - serving recipes - or work areas - playing audio books
or internet radio - than putting my 17 G4 in such danger!)

But, new is new... Warranty and all...

Buying a new or refurbished iBook may well be a better idea than buying from
a private seller. The Apple store has sometimes had great buys on
refurbished items and you can get the Applecare plan on them.

I am not sure if Apple offers refurbished items to all areas of the world
but I have had friends buy them and they have been very pleased.

As you said New is new - warranty and all. Laptops are generally much
more susceptible to expensive repairs so buying new would allow you to
purchase the Applecare warranty. If you are a student or teacher you can
also qualify for the educational discount which generally reduces the price
by approx $200-300 (CDN).

I love the size of the 15 screen, particularly for Photoshop work on the

PB repair in Canada

2005-01-03 Thread Amber
I was told by Applecare today that Canadians cannot have their PB's or
Laptops sent in for repair - they can only be serviced at local authorized
repair centers.

Are there no Applecare repair centers in Canada that can do this work ?

The wait time for local repairs can be up to a week just to get your
computer looked at, whereas I have heard many people outside Canada talk
about 36 hour turn around times when they shipped their laptops off to Apple
and had it repaired.

Are there any Canadians here who have actually been able to send their PB's
in for repair or is this a new policy (only local repairs and service) ?

portability and light weight. Of course, the 12 is such a delight to type
on that I've never wished for anything larger for that purpose.

I have the 15 and even if the person in front of me reclines, I can still
usually use it but just have to pull it forward somewhat.

I disagree with the portability - true it is heavier and slightly bigger but
it's still not a big deal to carry it around. The tiny 12 screen is just
too small for me to be practical for any of my uses - including Photoshop
and Illustrator. My friend has a 12 and I can't stand typing on it - the
screen is just too small and I am used to the extra space in front of the
keyboard on my 15. However, I do also use my PB as my primary computer. If
it was a secondary computer, I might have gone with the 12.

Shift-apple-cmd-power key combo ?

2005-01-03 Thread Amber
What does this key combo actually do ? I was advised to do this by an
Applecare Tech because my 15 AL PB will not wake up from sleep.

After I did this combo, it does seem to wake up from short term sleep - 5-10
minutes but it is still not waking from a 20-30 minute sleep without
plugging it in or powering it on again.

Just wondering also - should a hard disk sleep respond to tapping the
keyboard to wake it up again or does it normally shut the computer off after
a certain period of time ?

This PB just won't wake up after an extended sleep. Am I missing something
really basic here or is there something wrong with the way this PB is
sleeping ?

(I am running OS 10.3.7 on 512 MB original RAM - no additional RAM added).

Re: screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-03 Thread Marcin Wichary
I know, just don't like the way that iPhoto hides my
jpegs in cryptic locations. I like to organize my
photos in actual folders named for date, event or
whatever, rather than in iPhoto's arcane hiearchy of
cryptically named folders.
Ah, okay. That's exactly the reason I myself hate iPhoto as well. Why
couldn't they make it an option, like in iTunes? Here's hoping for

But I suppose you can just drag a photo to iPhoto, redo the red eyes,
and drag it back...?

Apple menu additions

2005-01-03 Thread Dean
Is it possible to add an alias or other items to the Apple menu

In OS 8 through OS 9 I'd place an alias of the hard drive in the apple menu
for quick access. I'd like to do the same in OS X but I can't find

OS X doesn't support this. Whenever you want to keep something handy, you
usually use the Dock. However, there are 3rd party hacks that will re-enable
this. Check for Apple menu on Version Tracker and you should find a few...

I think the 12 is a great little portable and you're right, it does play
DVD's etc well.

By Photoshop, I meant I do a significant amount of photo restoration so I
need as big a monitor as possible as it is tedious enough work at the best
of times. Even the 15 is a bit small - I am looking forward to getting a
20-23 monitor sometime this year.

In any case, I think it does boil down to personal preference regarding the
size of the laptop/screen. I really like the 15 and don¹t regret the
decision at all even though the trade off is that I have to carry an extra
pound with me whenever I take it out. Still, worth it for me given that I
do a lot of Photoshop work while I'm traveling as well as watching DVD's
etc.

Clearly the 12 is working well for you and that's great.

Lombard. But one can know with certainty by checking the web site of
the guy that runs this list for all of us:

Find PowerBooks in the Channel section on the right side.

I believe you are lookong for Pismo.
And the winner is...? :)

Re: iPhoto (was: screen sizes vs. reality)

2005-01-03 Thread Andrew F.
Iphoto, at least in the current version, makes all kinds of folders within
folders that appear to have nothing to do with organizing pictures. There
are folders for thumbs, and cryptic names to these folders and the folders
inside them. I used it for a while last year (I have only been in OSX for
about a year) and after having to open every single folder under pictures to
find my photos, such as my old 2002 - January folder, which had changed
and scattered photos that used to (in Windows) be organized the way I wanted
them organized.

I honestly don't care for the way iTunes does it either, but since I
download music and manage the playlists on two iPods, it is a necessary
evil. While I never liked Windows Media Player, I did like that its
playlists, rather than text or whatever files, could be the contents of a
folder on my PC. I'm sure iTunes has a way of doing that too, but like
iPhoto, it just sorted my music the way IT wanted to the first time, and it
has stayed that way.

And don't forget that the arcane file structure of iPhoto makes it more
difficult to store those pictures off the hard drive. I have all of my 2002
and older photos on a single DVD (with a duplicate of that DVD just in
case). I upgraded to a 5MP camera in 2003, so I use a few more DVDs, but
once I have about 3.5-4GB worth of photos on the hard drive, I like to
offload them, keeping the recent ones on the hard drive.

Re: Apple menu additions

2005-01-03 Thread Andrew F.
Another trick that while not an actual Apple Menu is to enable the Script
Menu, and then drag your aliases into it. My script menu has all of the
programs I use on a less than a daily basis, in subfolders by type, as well
as a few documents that I regularly access but don't want on the dock.

I tend to keep my dock fairly empty, with only my primary apps (14), my
Documents and Applications folders, and the Finder. Anything else I
want easy access to goes into the script menu, which is a bit slower access
(it thinks for a second or three before opening when it has lots of things
in it), but its free and does the job.

Re: Apple menu additions

2005-01-03 Thread Andrew F.
On thing about the script menu is that by default (it is activated from the
Applescipt folder in Applications) it has lots of Applescript aliases in it.
I don't use any of them, so I just emptied the whole contents allowing me to
use this as my own Apple menu.

Also, it looks kind of strange with certain programs (Office), which have
their script menus. Right now I have Entourage open, so right after the
help menu is a script menu, then a little over an inch away is my script
menu, both of which have the same icon, but very different contents.

This is nothing personal, but it just made me laugh what three

Lombard is the second to last G3 model line.

From your battery descriptions, I think you are looking for the
Wallstreet name (kind of encompasses Mainstreet/Wallstreet/PDQ).

I believe you are lookong for Pismo.

 And the winner is...? :)

The question was broken.

The flat battery which the questioner quoted was the Wallstreet which wasn't
the second last G3 Powerbook.

Re: naming of the second-to-last G3 PowerBooks?

2005-01-03 Thread Shawn Harley
Only Dan knows for sure!
Yes, the Lombard was the second to last in the G3 PowerBook line...
However, the battery that Dan describes (M4685, for the Wallstreet),
has never/will not/will never fit in the second to last G3 (Lombard).

Just to sort of answer Dan's question(s)...
1) The Lombard is the second to last G3 PowerBook
2) The Wallstreet (and Mainstreet, and PDQ) use the M4685 battery
3) The Lombard and Pismo use the M7318 battery
4) Which means the M4685 and M7318 are not interchangeable
Hope this helps Dan
Oh, and by the way Marcin...the winner(s) are?

Lombard is the second to last G3 model line.

From your battery descriptions, I think you are looking for the
Wallstreet name (kind of encompasses Mainstreet/Wallstreet/PDQ).

Both (no offense intended to the third reference, as we were all trying
to help)

from all OS changes in incremental upgrades are on the specific hardware

One surprising thing on the 12 is the quality of the sound from the
built-in speakers. When I'm in a hotel room the sound is good enough when
watching DVD movies that I rarely bother with headphones. I've not tried
the sound in the 15 or 17, but in comparison the sound on the Pismo is
downright wimpy, as is that on my friend's TiBook and my coworker's current
generation 14 iBook.
