Pismo and HP350cbi

2005-01-08 Thread Ronald Romine
I use a Pismo using OS X 10.2.8, and I just go t my hand on a used
portable printer from a state sale. The HP 350cbi was like new,
possibly never used, the battery and IrDA adaptor were still sealed.

However, there is a problem. OS X doesn't appear to support IrDA
printing, and the Mac Parallel-to-USB adapter was not included. What
are my options?

Do I need the specific HP adaptor (C3399A), has HP replaced it with an
updated adaptor, or will a generic adaptor due? I've read about
problem with the adaptor and later model Powerbooks (meaning the Pismo
and ibooks), not having the correct voltage to power the C3399A.

What about a parallel to Bluetooth adaptor? Do they exist, do they work
with the Pismo?

I also have the Parallel-to-Serial adaptor from the older HP340, can
anything be done with this? Such as a usb-to-serial adaptor?

Do I need gimp-print and cups, or will HP's USB driver for the HP 350
work?

- Ron.

Anyone having problems with Safari 1.2.4?

2005-01-08 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello all,
Using OS X 10.3.7 and running the newest version of Safari and
sometimes Safari locks up when trying to access secure websites.
Freezing is a rare occasion, but the usual bug is more annoying. .
.Safari takes so long that the websites tend to time out before it

I've used both iPodrip, and PodUtil. Both work, but I prefer PodUtil. I
found it easier to use and had more features. You should be able to find

It should print from a USB/parallel cable. If not through X.2 drivers
download gimp print and the proper driver for your printer. They have
most printer drivers available and they work better than the X.2 drivers
with a parallel ported printer.

Check with versiontracker.com for a link, or do a Google search.

Try reinstalling java 1.4.2(?). The 10.3.7 update seems to break something
in it. A reinstall of the latest java update seems to fix a number of Safari
quirks including the time-out bug, according to MacFixIt.com.

The time-out bug may require your entering your ISP's server into the DNS
server info in your network preferences.

Weird OS X problem

2005-01-08 Thread Dennis B. Swaney
I know that this list is for PowerBooks but I didn't get any response
on the iMac list, so I'm hoping that someone here might be able to
help.

I came home Thursday night and went to check my mail, do some Quicken
stuff, and so forth. However, I have a MAJOR problem with my G4 iMac,
10.3.7. Just about every third party program crashes on launch and
generates an error message that have the following in common:
something about a shared library error and the a string that looks
like this: ...CarbonLibCFMPriv_QD Where the ellipses (...)
are in the example, the text varies. The iMac worked fine Thursday
morning.

Any ideas as to what is causing this? I've repaired permissions, ran
the cron scripts. I also tried it on a test admin account with the
same errors. My next idea was to re-run the 10.3.7 update, or, maybe
better, do an Archive Install of 10.3 and then just update to 10.3.6

Dennis B. Swaney

I would go on a wild guess by saying that some kind of library has became
corrupted. If you could send me the crash log, I might be able to find out
which one it is. Then, you could try a program called Pacifist which has
the ability to extract files from an installer package and retrieve the
faulty file from the OS X install CD.

geek n.: A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one
who pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not
mainstream social acceptance. Geeks usually have a strong case of neophilia.
Most geeks are adept with computers and treat hacker as a term of respect,
but not all are hackers themselves - and some who are in fact hackers
normally call themselves geeks anyway, because they (quite properly) regard
`hacker' as a label that should be bestowed by others rather than
self-assumed.

Can Macs read DVD +R disks ?

2005-01-08 Thread Amber
My sister is planning to send me a DVD with a couple hundred photos/Jpegs on
it. She has a PC (poor gal) and has to burn to DVD +R disks. I can only
burn to DVD -R's on my Powerbook.

My question is, even though I can't burn to a DVD+R disk, would the
Powerbook be able to recognize and read it ? I called the local Mac store
and the fellow said once the data is burned to the DVD, it is readable on a
Mac but he didn't sound too sure about it.

Does anybody here have a definitive answer on this ?

Thanks,

Amber

Re: Weird OS X problem

2005-01-08 Thread John McGibney

3 things to try:
1. download the combo update for 10.3.7 and reinstall

2. run fsck from the startup
details here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

3. use the install CD, don¹t install.
select disk utility from the pull-down menu
run repair disk from the application
run repair permissions after disk repair done.

John

Pismo G3/Panther 10.3.4 OS 9.1 as classic-can't get 9.1 to 9.2

2005-01-08 Thread pace
Has anyone heard of any reason that OS 9.2.1 will not
load/upgrade onto OS 9.1(classic)?
This is on a pismo(G3) powerbook. I have OS 10.3.4 installed
have been running OS 9.1 when in the classic mode.
But every few months OS 9.1 will not be able to be the
startup disk?? Now every time I startup it comes up
says you are running OS 9.1 in classic mode, it is
recommended that you ungrade to OS 9.2
So, I have tried tried... but it will not load.
I have tried from OS X, I have tried from OS 9.1
(with without extensions on)
Anyone have a clue that may be of some help?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Can Macs read DVD +R disks ?

2005-01-08 Thread Jacob
Yes you should be able to, I have burnt some +R discs and they are
readable on my iBook.

*However*, not all +R discs may work, a +R disc is apparently readable
in 80% of dvd drives whilst -R is readable in drives.

The general rule of thumb is that recent computers should be able to
read pretty much any format, but if one doesn't work try different a
brand of +R discs is the first brand doesn't work.

Hope this helps

Re: Pismo G3/Panther 10.3.4 OS 9.1 as classic-can't get 9.1 to 9.2

2005-01-08 Thread Shawn Harley
Is your version of 9.2.1 a retail version? Or is it for a specific
machine?
Is it a full version or an upgrade?
I had a somewhat similar problem on my Dual G4 desktop. I'll try to
recall the install sequence.

Re: Pismo G3/Panther 10.3.4 OS 9.1 as classic-can't get 9.1 to 9.2

2005-01-08 Thread Shawn Harley
Somewhere in the install/upgrade process (9.0 to 9.1 to 9.2.1), the
upgrade CD (9.2.1, IIRC) would not install fully. The CD's are not
machine specific. I had to download or copy the CD contents (don't
remember) to the hard drive, restart with extensions off, and run the
upgrade from the hard drive. That worked, and I did the downloaded
upgrade to 9.2.2. That was the only way I could get to 9.2.2. That was
on my Dual G4 Gigabit.
May be similar in Kim's case?
