I am just now trying out the new iBook on the net for the first time and
boy does things go faster than on the Pismo... Just love it!!!
One of the biggest factors is VRAM for OS X!!!
---
BTW, have you now decided for sure to go for the PB?
I think I would have had problems deciding
Em, no. I AM (!) having problems deciding!!!
The issue is that the PB needs a new battery, but at least the I KNOW
it is new, and that raises the price tag to just over 1000SEK (a basic 12
iBook costs 9495SEK with 256MB and combo), but that does include
768MB RAM and a SuperDrive. It also has AirPort Xtreme, which I know
the iBook has.

That's the one.
My biggest problem is deciding between a straight (i.e. single
colour) or going for a motif of some sort.
A straight colour will always look good, while a good motif will
look better, though a crap motif will look shit and spoil the PB.

So my question is, was that just a case of low-quality,
(virtually) generic media? Or something else? Covert settings? Faulty SD?
Sunspots?
I don't have the answer, but I would like to expand the topic
a little as I have an MDD with SuperDrive and am hoping to buy
a PB with SD.
Are they all DVD-RW or just DVD-R ???
I have used fairly generic/low brand DVD-R with my MDD SD

Can you have your accounts with all different settings, such as using
different SMTP servers for different accounts, on Mail?

Can you have accounts that are checked for new mail at 5, or 30
minute intervals, others that are checked when you click check mail,
and others only on demand for that particular account?

AFAIK, Mail cannot do that, nor can Thunderbird. Eudora is the only
mail app that has that kind of flexibility. And as to it not being an
OS X application, it is a Carbon application, like Photoshop or Word
or GraphicConverter. Not Cocoa, but still very useful.

I will be happy to be proved wrong and show other mail programs that

Re: Superdrive and DVD-RW?

2005-01-18 Thread Luis Sequeira
DVD-RW works fine for recording data but iDVD used to reject them. I read
some hints on how to get iDVD to accept them but never tried it (look at
http://www.macosxhints.com/ ) and I seem to recall someone claiming the
problem no longer exists but I wouldn't swear to that.
Hmmm, I bought some CompUSA branded DVD-RWs and after trying 4 disks
I came to the conclusion that my TiBk 1GHz SuperDrive didn't support
writing to them (although the specs says it should). So my question
is, was that just a case of low-quality, (virtually) generic media?
Or something else? Covert settings? Faulty SD? Sunspots?
-Al Terego
The original TiBook 1GHz superdrive is NOT supposed to work with
DVD-RW (only DVD-R).
I have one.

There is an unsupported, do-it-at-your-own-risk firmware upgrade
which, in principle, allows you to do two things: double the burning
speed for supported media (DVD-R at 2x, CD-R at 16x, CD-RW at 8x) and
also burn to DVD-RW (at 1x). I did that and can do the first of those
happily.
Burning to DVD-RW is still not working great. Some burn, but give
problems later, some give burning errors. I have been told that
writing something to a DVD-RW on a different drive and then erasing
it makes it work ok, but I have no other machine (mac or pc) that can
write to DVD-RW, so I have no way of testing this claim.

Eudora has many strong qualities, and I've used it for a long time
without any major issues until recently. If you need IMAP, then forget
Eudora. If you like paying for bug fixes, then Eudora is for you. I know
you can use Eudora for free with ads, but why support a company with a
philosophy like that? Eudora's support team is absolutely horrible,
especially for OS X users. I would use Mail, Mailsmith or even Gyazmail
before I would ever consider going back to Eudora.

Yes. And I do.
Can you have accounts that are checked for new mail at 5, or 30 minute

others only on demand for that particular account?
All my accounts are checked at 5 minute intervals, because in this day
and age, checking for new mail slightly more often than strictly
necessary doesn't affect internet performance in the slightest. We're
talking about a total of a couple of hundred bytes each way to
establish the connection, realise that there's nothing new, and close
the connection. It's also possible disable automatic checking on a
per-account basis, should the need arise.

AFAIK, Mail cannot do that, nor can Thunderbird. Eudora is the only

Luis Sequeira
At this stage, the only feature you've mentioned that Mail doesn't have
(set automatic check intervals on a per-account basis) is entirely
unnecessary for anyone with an internet connection faster than a 14.4k
modem.

Unfortunately, however, that's where I was and still am: I haven't been

it looks as though the book itself puts in some weird IP address,
subnet mask and router address.
Any idea what should be done to overcome this problem?

You might consider an HP. Their print cartridge combines the ink

Consider Epson too, for the same reason.

I haven't experienced that for a long time. So, I pushed the Command +
Control and Power button. The machine gave me the start-up chime but
that is all. It didn't start up. The back-light on the screen flickered
ever so slightly but still nothing. Breathe Breathe, Breathe...
OK, removed the keyboard and checked the ram, made sure that everything
is seated well. Made sure that the battery had juice - it does - and
plugged the power cord back in. Try again. Hold the power button down -
Nothing. Command + Control + Power button gives me the startup chime
but no start up.
Try the reset button on the back panel. Press in and release. Power
indicator light gives me a blink but nothing else happens. Press the
Power button and all I get is the startup chime but no start up. Try
pushing the power button again, nothing. Have to push the Command +
Control + Power button to even get the chime.
What happens if you start up from the original CD, or any utility CD?

Yes indeed, you can change short names. Apple has a technical article

Re: Multiple mail accounts (was Questions: OS Upgrades, browser/Mail/News choice)

2005-01-18 Thread Luis Sequeira
At this stage, the only feature you've mentioned that Mail doesn't have
(set automatic check intervals on a per-account basis) is entirely
unnecessary for anyone with an internet connection faster than a 14.4k
modem.
Cheers,
Ben

I (almost) stand corrected. You're right that having different
intervals on a per-account basis is not terribly important.

I would gladly switch to Mail... now I tried it and it imported all
my mail from Eudora quite nicely. Good.
It appears to do almost everything I need. It does not import my
accounts (personalities in Eudora parlance), but I can remake them.
Not a big deal, I have currently 10.

I can select, on a per-account basis, whether to check mail
automatically. What I can't seem to do is to check mail for a
specific account, or set of accounts, individually.
Let be more specific: I have a few accounts for specific purposes
that are not used daily. In Eudora, I can have these set up so that
Check mail does not check these accounts. One, for example, is an
backup account with a free ISP that only allows POP when using one
of their modem connections. I
want to be able to keep this account accessible but disabled, in
the sense that manually selecting the Check mail command does not
try to check mail from this account. I don't find any way to achieve
this. Now in Eudora I can leave the check box check mail on manual
checks unchecked and, when needed, bring up the personalities
pane, select this (and possibly others) personality and hit the check
mail button, thus checking mail for this personality, while the
regular check mail does not affect it.
Can I have this sort of functionality in Mail? I would love to.

I get the usual start up sound as well.
After waiting 5min or so, I give up and press the power

suggestions any one?
I had a somewhat similar problem. I tried all of the suggestions from
the Apple Support site, but finally solved it almost by accident.

I tried to start up with the OS 9 disk, but no luck using the C key.
So I tried a couple of times by starting up using the Option key in
order to select the CD as the startup disk but I could not get it to
show. Finally I just clicked on the OS 10.3.7 icon and then the box
with the right arrow in it. It started right up. I then went to the
startup disk system preference and selected OS X.

This is a shot in the dark, but can't see that it would hurt to try...
Good Luck,

How is your router configured? If configured to act as a DHCP server, then
you shouldn't need to enter a manual IP address, just select DHCP server and
the 2400c should be able to get all the information it needs from your
router.

iBook 500 - How capable ?

2005-01-18 Thread Larry le Mac
I still haven't recieved the iBook 500 that doesn't charge
the battery/runoff the mains, but I will have a good look
at it when it does arrive. If anyone has got any tips on
how to solve this, please mail! BTW, it runs off battery ok.
I am currently using an iMac G4 1GHz for showing AVI
films on a TV, but it's overkill when looking at capital
value vs. usage.
I am thinking of using the iBook for Internat radio, iPod
base station and playing movies onto a TV, maybe the odd
e-mailing, nothing more.
Anyway, how capable is the iBook 500 of showing AVI
films on a TV at full screen with MPlayer for instance ?
Min 256MB RAM, maybe 384MB.

Thus spoke Frank P. Eigler [EMAIL PROTECTED]1/18/05

I know you can use Eudora for free with ads, but why support a
company
 with a philosophy like that?

What the heck is wrong with that? It's called choice. Better than
either
being forced to pay a fee *or* be tempted to use it without paying for
it.
I wish *more* companies would do that.

I use it this way. Yes, it *is* annoying *some of the time*, but it's
nice
to have a fairly feature-rich email client for free. Imagine that
philosophy being applied to something like Photoshop Elements for
or
Office?
When I said support a company like that, I meant paying for silly bug
fixes, not because they have ads. I don't mind paying for something that
has new features, but why pay full price for silly bugs? If that is how
you reward a company that is your choice, but I want to support a
company that respects its buyers. Examine eudora's releases and you will
notice a long list of bug fixing. Pay for new and improved features yes!
Pay for bugs...not me!

Lombard Screw Matrix

2005-01-18 Thread MaxTek
Hi,

Does anyone have a link or something I can download that shows the screw
matrix for my Powerbook G3 400mhz Lombard?

The screw matrix for this particular PB is not included in any of the tech

Re: Multiple mail accounts (was Questions: OS Upgrades, browser/Mail/News choice)

2005-01-18 Thread Ben Dyer
Good point -- I don't think there's any way of getting Mail to do that
other than manually taking accounts offline, then bringing them back
online when you want to check them.

Cheers,

I (almost) stand corrected. You're right that having different

I would gladly switch to Mail... now I tried it and it imported all my

It appears to do almost everything I need. It does not import my
accounts (personalities in Eudora parlance), but I can remake them.
Not a big deal, I have currently 10.

I can select, on a per-account basis, whether to check mail
automatically. What I can't seem to do is to check mail for a specific
account, or set of accounts, individually.
Let be more specific: I have a few accounts for specific purposes that
are not used daily. In Eudora, I can have these set up so that Check
mail does not check these accounts. One, for example, is an backup
account with a free ISP that only allows POP when using one of their
modem connections. I
want to be able to keep this account accessible but disabled, in the
sense that manually selecting the Check mail command does not try to
check mail from this account. I don't find any way to achieve this.
Now in Eudora I can leave the check box check mail on manual checks
unchecked and, when needed, bring up the personalities pane, select
this (and possibly others) personality and hit the check mail button,
thus checking mail for this personality, while the regular check mail
does not affect it.
Can I have this sort of functionality in Mail? I would love to.

Re: Setting up a prev. owned iBook Was: Re: Questions: OS Upgrades, browser/Mail/News choice

2005-01-18 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi Tim,
This is sort of a test too, because my last mail bounced, saying that
my domain was black-listed...

Please read my other mail, Tim. And to address specifically what you
are saying... The system and software that is on this computer, is
now mine. We are just talking about what came with this computer. I
got all original CD`s, papers etc. that came with it too. The only
additional thing that came with the computer, was the music he had
collected. He asked me if I wanted it, and I said yes. Of course I
could have chosen to say no and started downloading it all over
again. But that really does not make much sense to do. You probably
did not notice that I do not live in the US, since you are telling me
what is right according to US law... But I don`t live in the US, I
live in Norway - and I follow Norwegian law, which is very different
than yours on this. If I deleted iTunes and started downloading it
all over again, I would still be following Norwegian law. I only own
one copy of this music, and I am not breaking any law. So I consider
this music as mine, and I have my full rights to do so.

The case would have been different if I lived in the United States of
America, but I only have to relate to US law when I am in the US,
just as you have to relate to Norwegian law if you visit our
country... It might as well have been the other way around, meaning
that if something is forbidden by law here, I can`t just assume that
the same goes for you guys that live in the US... E.g. I think it is
really horrendous that people dock tails and ears on dogs, and if
somebody does it here, they would be in real trouble, it has been
forbidden by law since 1981. Everybody here agree that it is a
violation of animal rights to do so, it is considered as abuse and
inflicting needless pain and suffering onto an innocent animal. I
have been on a lot of International dog mailing lists over the years,
and this issue comes up all the time. You bet I really feel like
speaking up, telling how this issue is seen here in Norway and how I
feel about it. But I just can`t push that belief on the US
participants, or US friends when I visit the US, for that matter. I
just have to respect that you follow your customs and legislation,
and in the US this is still allowed. It is just one of these things
you have to draw a line on, I think. I don`t like everything that is
considered right in other countries, and people in other countries
of course don`t like everything that we consider right.

But, if you really don`t know, a simple question most often clears it
up real quickly...

Just my NOK 0.50 worth... :)
Aase :)
Hey Ben, that's somebody else's music! What you are suggesting is
tantamount to theft. Aase, put your OWN music in iTunes, the stuff that is

Re: Setting up a prev. owned iBook Was: Re: Questions: OS Upgrades, browser/Mail/News choice

2005-01-18 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi all,
I have not got to reading the other mails, been too busy today. But I
see that obviously has been some discussion, and I just feel
compelled to make one thing clear...

I see that Ben pointed out one thing, you guys don`t know which
situation I am in. Ben - you are so correct! :) (and BTW, I am a
she:) - Aw-Seh)

I live in Norway, and my obligation is to follow Norwegian laws.
According to the big red law book which I actually own copies of, we
are here allowed to own 1 copy of music etc. for our own use. If you
however choose to make copies to sell or distribute, then you are
breaking the law. That we still have this legislation here, has been
subject to a lot of discussion, but the law still says this, and I
really don`t think it will be changed anytime soon...

Actually I just read a long article about it, and there is no
disagreement when it comes to interpreting this law, it is crystal
clear (I promise you, the record companies do not like this one bit).
Bottom line - as a Norwegian citizen, keeping one copy for myself of
whatever it is in iTunes, is completely legal. I am fully aware of
the fact that the laws says otherwise e.g. in the US, but I really
don`t have any obligation towards US law except for when I am
there... :)

So, to be honest, I really don`t feel bad about enjoying this music
when I know that according to the legislation I have to relate to - I
am not doing anything wrong, and I hope that you guys can understand
that.

I must say though, I was really disappointed to find out that iTunes
Music Store is not available for us here. I would love to use it, and
download music to enjoy. I figured that I could just access it e.g.
in the US, but I just get a window saying that it is not available in
my country...

Again, I appreciate all your help and input on the issues I need help
with!!! This time I however think one point was proved, that things
aren`t always as they seem... :)

Have a nice evening! Here it is getting late, so it is time to hit
the sack... I will be back tomorrow to really read your postings!

Until then - take care!
Aase :)

Well, another thing to consider is that any music downloaded off of iTunes
Music Store won't be able to be accessed unless he keeps the former user's
account. If the former owner is 'OK' with this then. But I doubt it.
It's just sad that we even have to remind others of the obvious. I will
continue my attempts at 'tikkun olam', but experience tells me that it's an
uphill battle.

Re: Setting up a prev. owned iBook Was: Re: Questions: OS Upgrades, browser/Mail/News choice

2005-01-18 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi again Nancy,
I guess I will have to learn to hold my hands in a slightly different
position... I think it really got a lot more sensitive because I have
a fever at the moment. I tried earlier, and I really don`t have to
physically touch the track pad... It is really annoying, because i
type real fast, so before I am able to react, I have sometimes not
only to another place, but also managed to select and remove
something... If it gets real problematic, I will just have to try to
cut a piece of plastic or something to put on top of it, but that is
really not an ideal solution, having to remove it to use the track
pad etc. Maybe I should ask Apple about it, if they have some ideas
on how to deal with it... Did you ever do that?

The whole keyboard and the mouse button are also very different than
the Pismo, I think. But I remember feeling that way when I got the
Pismo as well, so I guess it is much a matter of getting used to it.
But the track pad problem is really annoying. I just selected and
deleted most of this pharagraph. Seconds later I typed a word in the
paragraph above, before I just now suddenly was typing in the
sentence above then a few seconds later moved back a few
characters... I think things happened maybe 6-7 times just during
this paragraph... That is a bit much...

I hadn`t got to doing anything about the keyboard set-up yet, but
stumbled u pon it while using a program earlier, I saw the US flag
showing in the menu. So I went to explore, and a little while later,
I was typing touch as i always did. I just have to resist looking
down at all, because I then suddenly doubt where things are. I got a
keyboard ordered though, so I hope it arrives fast. I just have to
find somebody to install it. A Mac dealer I know told me on the
phone though that changing the keyboard wouldn`t affect AppleCare,
but I should check whether it can affect it if I don`t use an
authorized Apple workshop to do it for me. I got it ordered from a
place out of town, so I can`t get them to do it. Another place I
checked with, said they couldn`t just order and sell it to me unless
I delivered them the computer for them to install it. I am sure that
either my boss or my nephew (who has formal training in such things)
can do it though, but I just want to be sure that I don`t get any
problems. I would like not having to pay hours for doing it though,
as the labor is real expensive here, and I already used a bit too
much... Oh well, I`ll soon enough find out...

Thanks again for your help!!!
Aase :) (Aw-Seh, not Ace, even if some of my US friends call me
that because they just can`t say my name)
Aase--FWIW, the jumpiness of the trackpad on my ibook is something
I'm still not used to, especially compared to my Pismo. I've
fiddled with the settings on it and it doesn't seem to help, so I
guess it's just something I'm stuck with. Enjoy your new 'book!

Re: Painting AlBook ???

2005-01-18 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi again Larry,
Have you seen a laptop painted with a motif? You wouldn`t be afraid
that it could sort of ruin the simple elegance the PB has - the sort
of minimalist style? I think the candy apple red sounds really neat
and elegant... But again, of course it is a matter of taste...

Did you have a look at the red Ferrari laptop? There`s a picture at
http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/fr3000.htm

I didn`t look further though, I am sure that there are better
pictures out there... But, as far as I can see, it really looks
great. But a painted PB would look much better, no doubt in my
mind :)

When you decide, if you do it, you will just have to share pictures!!!
Aase :)

From: John McGibney [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Candy Apple Red;)
That's the one.
My biggest problem is deciding between a straight (i.e. single
colour) or going for a motif of some sort.
A straight colour will always look good, while a good motif will
look better, though a crap motif will look shit and spoil the PB.

Go with the iBook.
Not only is a dropped laptop forever tainted IMO, but the iBooks are
said to have much better reception than the Powerbooks (I use mine
mostly in the same room with the base station, so it was a moot point
to me) and they have longer battery life.

The iBook is a great computer. The Powerbook was right for me for
other reasons, but given your situation I think the iBook is the clear
winner. Definitely wait for Tiger at this point.
