Not this model, nor that brand, but I have a tiny LaCie Mobile Hard

Re: Network Questions

2005-02-28 Thread Luis Sequeira
Hi, Thanks for the help. Still not sure what to do, but to help
clarify, my stay will be in Vienna, Au. The apartment owner says:
the active connection cable box is in the studio some 30 feet away
from the first virtual working desk in the apartment in the living
area. Not exactly sure what that means, but maybe someone out there
can shed some light. Doesn't sound too promising to me. Maybe I'll
have to find another wireless connection, or go the dial up route?
Regards, Tom Adams
How does he reach from the cable box to the virtual working desk?
A long ethernet cable? Or does he have wireless already?
Sounds to me that you may get by with a wireless router connected to
the cable modem (don't know about Austria, but here in Portugal these
go for about 90 euros).

USB Hub killed two Macs... ???

2005-02-28 Thread Larry le Mac
I am sending this question here, even though it relates to
a couple of iMacs, as in reality it's USB which is the subject
and not iMac.
I have just seemingly killed (?) two Bondi iMacs by plugging
a powered USB hub in.
Prior to using the hub, they both worked fine, now they
won't start up at all. I can hear the click of the PSU when
I plug in the power cable, but even pressing the button on
the front with nothing else plugged in, nothing happens.
It's a TopCom USB 2.0 (1.1 compatible) powered hub with
4 ports, so nothing out of the ordinary but I am 100% sure
that it was the hub that caused the fault(s).
1. What could have happened to the iMacs ?
Can they be fixed ?
Any checks to be made ?
2. Is it likely to be a faulty hub, or is there some incompatibility
(though there shouldn't be) ?

Did you have the computer on when you plugged it in? Sometimes with
powered hubs you are not supposed to plug them in when the computer is
on. If it really did fry them, I would call and ask for the company to
pay for the damage, because that is unacceptable.

Re: USB Hub killed two Macs... ???

2005-02-28 Thread Larry le Mac
To the best of my knowledge (and I have studied electronics
at Uni for 4 years) a powered hub simply boosts the signal out
to the connected devices, and can be used as an unpowered
hub with the PSU unplugged.
It should not affect the computer end of the hub.
Obviously there might be something wrong with the hub,
but still odd IMO.
I had a small brainwave and I'm going to try pressing the reset
button and see if this helps revive the iMacs.
Question (I know this is not the iMac list) is the external reset
switch (tiny resessed thing by the USB port) the same as the
Cuda switch ???

Re: How do current iBooks fare in multimedia apps like iMovie or Garageband?

2005-02-28 Thread Ben Parkhurst
If you get a G4 powerbook, iMovie and Garageband will fly. Upgrading
the HD to a 5400 is fairly simple, but what is even easier is to get
an external Firewire drive and use that. This easier, and makes taking
data elseware a breeze. Just make sure you have AT LEAST 768 Megs of
memory when trying to run iMovie, with a G4 600, increasing the ram
from 512 to 768 cut down rendering time by about 1/3rd, because it did
not need to use the HD for virtual memory.

I'm not 100% sure but usually, the reset switch is NOT the CUDA switch. On
my PowerMac BW G3, the external reset switch doesn't seem to have anything
to do with the CUDA switch which is on the motherboard. However, they could
be the same thing.

Here is what Apple says about the CUDA chip:

The Cuda is a microcontroller chip on the Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics)
logic board.

and:

The function of the Cuda chip is to:
? Turn system power on and off.
? Manage system resets from various commands.
? Maintain parameter RAM (PRAM).
? Manage the real-time clock.

I use Sidetrack on my laptop. In addition to its
primary purpose of turning the edges of your

I use the four corners for expose, control-click

Pismo has two entirely separate ATA busses, an Ultra-DMA/66 internal HD

My first problem is trying to state what's really going on so you can
understand.  I'm using an indigo ibook along with an airport express;
operating on mac os 10.3.8. I initially had some trouble getting the
system to work with the airport express, but an apple tech walked me
through a set up and had me create a network with a name. call it
home for example. Everything was fine for a couple of months. But
for the last couple of months I've been losing my internet connection
while chatting or whatever. When I open internet connect and try
reconnecting I get this msg. that says, there was an error joining
network home. Or, I'm out of range (not likely as I'm only about 10'
away). The usual fix is restarting the computer. Sometimes this works
right away, sometimes it doesn't. Frustrating to say the least. Any
suggestions? Thank you for your time!

I use Sidetrack on my laptop. In addition to its primary purpose of
turning the edges of your trackpad into scroll areas it also allows
you to assign functions to the trackpad's four corners. I use the four
corners for expose, control-click and hide all. A wonderful

YES! SideTrack does not work on the new PowerBooks - different trackpad
- so I miss its features. I used it on my old Pismo with lots of
success! Quite a powerful utility!

I have the same problem with my AlBook, same OS. Started in about the time I
got the latest upgrade (10.3.8).

The CUDA switch does function as a reset switch but they're not the
same. The external reset switch just restarts the computer like
command-control-power key.

I'm not 100% sure but usually, the reset switch is NOT the CUDA
switch. On
my PowerMac BW G3, the external reset switch doesn't seem to have
anything
to do with the CUDA switch which is on the motherboard. However, they
could
be the same thing.

Here is what Apple says about the CUDA chip:
The Cuda is a microcontroller chip on the Power Macintosh G4 (PCI
Graphics)
logic board.

and:
The function of the Cuda chip is to:
? Turn system power on and off.
? Manage system resets from various commands.
? Maintain parameter RAM (PRAM).
? Manage the real-time clock.

Re: FinderPop like utility for OS X

2005-02-28 Thread themacuser
The new trackpads are USB, the old ones were ADB. The two-finger
scrolling can actually be enabled on older powerbooks and iBooks,
basically any PowerBook G4 and any white iBook or above can do it, with
this http://www-users.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de/~razzfazz/
I have this working, it's really cool...

You can also rightclick by putting two fingers on the pad, hitting the
button and then releasing both.

FinderPop like utility for OS X

Fruitmenu coupled with moveitems X has made for a satisfactory
substitute for Finderpop (which substituted for popup folder)

Subject: FinderPop like utility for OS X
Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2005 13:02:57 -0700
Have a brand (new to me) Pismo, first OS X laptop.
On my desktops I use my Kensington trackballs that have a button set to
control-click, but I am NOT going to lug around a mouse to use with my
new laptop.
Under OS X there used to be a utility called FinderPop, which among a
number of other things, set the contextual menu to pop up when you held
the mouse button down qithout moving it for a time.
FinderPop was never updated for OS X; does anyone know of anything that
does this for OS X?
(I don't need contextual navigations of my hard drive, the internet and
have a dock/desktop/Finder replacement app, I just want the bleep
context menu to pop up.
Suggestions?
