Re: PDF bar in Word 2004 ???

2005-04-01 Thread Harry D . Corsover
I asked the same question about Word v.X and Excel v.X and don't recall
getting a response. When I close it in Word, documents move
appropriately. In Excel, the spreadsheet moves up so the top bar (the
only place to grab and move a document) is hidden by the top tool bar.
I have to move that bar out of the way, resize the window, then move
the tool bar back.

Any sources for affordable replacements or something I can do to keep

Re: Followup Re: generic screen w/no Finder in OS X?

2005-04-01 Thread Muddle Man
An archive and install is a great way to get a new,
clean system on the Mac (ala "Clean" install of OS 9
days).

However, you will encounter serious problems if you
don't update the Mac immediately after doing an
archive and install. I did this once and tried to open
Mail and some other apps they immediately crashed with
an unexpected error. The Mail version was at OS
10.3.5. The archive and install put it back to 10.3.0.
Once updated, all was well.

Re: Followup Re: generic screen w/no Finder in OS X?

2005-04-01 Thread Beverly Woods
Fortunately there was another empty partition on the hard drive, so I
had her install a fresh 10.3.4 on that, and after a lot of work
changing ownership of her old files (from Unknown and Staff and You
Have No Access), we got her mail database and documents moved over and
working. So we're up and running again now with a fresh install.

Bruce Johnson wrote:
Oh dear.
The easy way to avoid that was to boot from the Panther CD and do an
Archive & Reinstall installation; that completely replaces the System
folder, and replaces all the Apple apps, but keeps all your user
information intact. Takes about an hour on a sufficiently fast
computer...

Thanks, Bruce. I was wary of trying that because I recalled hearing that
there might be problems reinstalling OS X if the install CDs (10.3) were a
lower version than the installed OS (10.8). By this time my mom was losing
all hope that we would get anything working at all, and she was about ready
to send the Mac back to me and go back to the Windows boxes my other sister
wants her to use.
So I went for the quickest, least complex thing I could think of that I
could tell her how to do over the phone, that I was pretty sure would
result in at least one working install of the OS. Once she saw a working OS
she was much happier right away. (She didn't have a lot of important
documents that weren't backed up elsewhere, so the user information in this
case was a secondary concern.)
But for future reference: is there a problem with CDs being an older
version than the installed, updated version, or does that problem not apply
to Archive and Reinstall?
thanks,
Beverly

If you call into AOL you can get two months. Secondly, they now have
release the Strauss version of 9.0, specifically gears towards AOL
members with macintosh OSX. Thirdly, if you call in to cancel before
the free trial is over and they cancel the account immediately, you can
then reactivate it the day after for another 2 months... That's what
my brother does in the summer time when he travels.

I used MacDialup.net when I was traveling to Canada. They are however based
in the US and are very knowledgeable about the Mac, if not totally comitted

Re: Firewire not working

I recommend trying the cable and iPod on a different
Mac. This sounds like a hardware problem and testing
like this will be the only way to figure it out.

If it turns out it is the firewire port, then consider
calling Apple if it's still under warranty.

I think you know what I mean. You have an AirPort Extreme base station
and you want to increase the range but don't want to do a WDS with an

An external antenna will probably do your job if your base station

All Wallstreet are of the same size, regardless of the screen size. The
bottom case is the same, so they have to be of the same size. They are
actually thicker than Lombards and Pismos. It is sometimes difficult to tell
the difference between a Wallstreet I and a Wallstreet II, specially when
talking about the slower model at 233MHz. Wallstreet I were available in
speeds of 233, 250 and 292 MHz. Wallstreet II were available in speeds of
233, 266 and 300MHz. I suggest you have a look at EveryMac.com
 to see the
differences between each model...

Re: Wallstreet memory and ...

2005-04-01 Thread JP

I have what I think is the same model. Without considering anything else
(and although it has always provided reliabilty for the 17 mos I've had
it) I would not recommend this machine for doing alot of things.

Mine came w/192mb ram and 10gig hd. Not bad. However, for me, the screen
(being dual scan and NOT active matrix) is very rough on the eyes (well,
mine anyway -- bifocals..) The PB 1400c I have has the active matrix
and, even though the screen is a touch smaller, is much more 'viewable'.
do you have another screen in mind to switch to?

The lack of of L2 cache means slower performance unless you go with an
upgrade card. Not to mention problems w/Panther...(maybe you don't need
Panther?)

I went w/246mb from OWC. And Jaguar.

I found instructions how to access the lower module. It takes the
nerves, and steady hands of a surgeon, but I managed.
Remover the 128 installed in the upper module. Accessed lower module.
Removed the 64mb there (still have it if you want it...).
Installed the 128mb previously in upper. Closed lower. Inserted 256
upper.

Be aware that this config. wlll confuse OS X if you install. Go w/128
only in lower bay. Install X. Reopen memory bay and add the 256.

Can tell you that Jag is very nice on this machine (even though I only
have cd drive; not combo/super.

also, if you want USB, you have to get the pcmcia/cardbus adapter.

On the plus side, the keyboard is excellent.

And like I said it's given very steady service (even after being dropped
from desk to hard floor just after arrival. (GULP!!)

My opinion (and still considering either iBook or Pismo.)

goood luck

You probably mean "Battery Reset". If you search on the Apple web site, you
should find it. However, try to let the Wallstreet plugged in for at least
48 hours before doing anything drastic. If after 48 hours, it hasn't started
charging the battery, then you might want to reset the PMU. Instructions on
how to do that are available on the support section of Apple web site.

If all else fails, then I'm afraid that the Power Management Unit (PMU) in
your Wallstreet has been toasted. It happened to me once...

Hi, Folks,

I've got a Wallstreet II 233MHz, running OS 9.2.2, which until last night
had a battery good for about 2hours 35 minutes.

A friend came over with his iBook and needed to go onine for his mail. so I
closed the lid of the Wallstreet to put it to sleep, took out the phone
cable so he could use it with my dial-up ISP on his iBook, and suggested he
just put his iBook on top of my sleeping Wallstreet. Big Mistake!

This morning, when I opened my Wallstreet and attempted to rouse it from
sleep, nothing happened. It appeared completely dead! I later discovered
that my friend had plugged his iBook into my Uninterruptible Power Supply,
which apparently overloaded it, and it shut down. It may have even supplied
backup power for a while; I don't know.

My Wallstreet battery had been in excellent shape until now, but apparently
when the UPS shut down, my sleeping Wallstreet then went for quite a few
hours (maybe 5-6) on it's battery, and then simply ran out of power. When I
went to it to revive it from sleep, my friend's iBook had already been
removed- I don't know how long before- but my Wallstreet felt hot.

I restarted the UPS backup unit, booted my Wallstreet, and then was amazed
to see that not only was my battery depleted, but that it isn't recharging
itself!

I tried it in the right side expansion/ battery bay, and that didn't get it
to charge, either.

Any information or suggestions on this? I remember that once upon a time, my
PowerBook 1400cs, I believe when it was running OS 8.6, had a battery
restoring utility. Is this utility still available? Might it work on my
Wallstreet II, running OS 9.2.2?

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

All the best,
stanton

FYI, I use email-anywhere.com exclusively from Safari. No problem.

Oh dear.
The easy way to avoid that was to boot from the Panther CD and do an

Is there a Linux/Unix webmail-based service that will

Well, if you have a POP3 email account somewhere, you can always use some

Choking on Yahoo Mail, OSX, ADSL, Firefox, adfarm.mediaplex.com ads

Hi all,

Serious choke points and loading 10 sec. or longer and
finally no ad is loaded. Using Yahoo Mail, OSX, ADSL,
Firefox; adfarm.mediaplex.com ads - these ones do the
choking. Mediaplex.com is indeed an internet
advertising firm, located worldwide.

I wrote to Yahoo but their help is useless (no
response). I compared Mac 'puters - 10.1.4 up to
10.3.8 - same slow down. Yahoo can also be slow on an
even faster cable connection (using Windoze) at work.

I will abandon Yahoo mail if nothing can be done, so
your webmail based alternatives welcome (G-mail does

The older TiBooks were notorious for having FW ports that were easy
to fry. I killed mine (on a 500) by plugging in an external self
powered HD. My solution was to go to Otherworld and get a FW PC card.
Of course, with the PC Card it will only sync, but not charge as PC
card ports don't supply power.

Well, I would maybe suspect the FireWire cable to be defective. If you could
try with another one, that would answer that question. If it's not the
cable, then, it has to be the FireWire port on the computer itself, or the
chip that runs the protocol. Hard to say...

upper slot can accommodate either low or high profile
lower slot can accommodate only low profile modules.
Moreover the memory controller chip in the WS can only address
modules with a maximum number of 16 chips, and each chip can be of
128 megabit density (128 mbits x 16 = 2048 megabits, i.e. 2048 / 8 =
256 megabytes.

Ben

Just because Apple never fully tested 512 doesn't mean it can't be
done. They haven't fully tested 512s so they just say 192 is the
maximum because they don't want heaps of people asking for support
if their 512 screws up.

I think you can go up to 512MB in a Wallstreet. The Apple web site lists
192MB because at the time when the Wallstreet was introduced, the density of
the memory chips didn't allow for greater than 192MB.
