Mine just failed- if you find something that works well would you mind
sharing?
I didn't see a mention of which OS you're using.
If it's OS X, I'd suggest you try VLC to play your DVDs. Apple's DVD
Player may not like to do external drives, but VLC should have no
problem with that.

Any thoughts on why my new (used) 15 G4 PB doesn't see a HD I have in a USB

The PB can see the 120GB firewire external with no problem.

Re: MCE's iBook SuperDrive upgrade

2005-05-05 Thread Stephen Thomas
They returned both drives. The old hard disk is now in a firewire
enclosure. The old combo drive is in a shoebox (couldn't think of
anything useful to do with it). I did specifically ask for both drives
back, and I asked them to clone my original disk onto the 100 GB. Not
sure if they would have done either if I hadn't asked, but I suspect it
would vary by shop, etc. anyway.

Need help figuring out is going on with iTunes on my iBook.

2005-05-05 Thread Albert Wang
Hi folks,

I've been trying to install iTunes onto my 300 mhz
Tangerine iBook which has 192 mb of ram. I currently
have Mac OS X 10.0.4 installed on it. When I tried to
install the iTunes onto the drive the laptop just
hangs up on the part where it is trying to install the
AppleScript for IPodDrivers. I wait like 10 minutes
but close out of the installer and wonder what is
going on?

Is there a fix for the iTunes or is it just the laptop
rather slow about installing iTunes or a defect?

Thanks guys!

The PB can see the 120GB firewire external with no problem.

Test something else in the port to make sure the port is working? Some
drives are picky about power, but I don't think that's your problem
here. You could see if it's a power issue by plugging the drive into a
powered hub connected to the PB.

Run disk utility to see if the thing is being seen, but not mounted
for some reason.

There must be a problem with your iBook or the system. It doesn't take that
long.

Can I ask you a question? Why didn't you upgrade your Mac OS X installation
to 10.1.5? It's a free upgrade from 10.0.4.

Then, what version of iTunes are you trying to install? How much free space
do you have on your iBook?

iTunes craziness...

Do you mean 10.4? If so, you will never see that update in Software Update
because it is a paid upgrade. You must purchase it to install it.

As for iTunes, well, I don't know what is wrong. Try the latest version and
check what minimum system version it needs.

You might need to repair the permissions on your machine. Also, if you could
provide more details about what is going wrong when you try to install
iTunes, that might help...

There must be a problem with your iBook or the system. It doesn't take
that
long.

Can I ask you a question? Why didn't you upgrade your Mac OS X
installation
to 10.1.5? It's a free upgrade from 10.0.4.

I'll go furtheryou REALLY go to 10.2 or 10.3 on that one.
My wife's Tangerine is running 10.3 quite happily and remarkably
snappily, though she has 288 MB ram not 192. (the 256 mb RAM upgrade is
$35 at Data Memory Systems http://www.datamem.com/viewcat.asp?C=1098)

10.3 is WAY faster than 10.0; it'll feel like a whole new iBook! OS X
is the only OS in a long time that has gotten faster with each
iteration since the .0 version.

Commercial audio disks are different creatures entirely than CD-R or
CD-RW disks! Your car player may simply have trouble with CD-r or -rw
disks.

If changing the burn speed changes how the disks behave in your car,
then most likely it's your disks. try different brands; you may have to
try several different brands.

The last thing I'd suspect would be the drive, unless you're getting a

The updaters for 10.1 are free downloads, however the *upgrade* from
10.0 to 10.1 isn't.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75295
This is puzzling; IIRC the original upgrade CD's were freely available
at the time.
If you do find the upgrade you need, the 10.1.5 update's here:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcomboupdate_10_1_5.html

However, I'd suggest you bypass 10.1 entirely and shop for 10.2 Jaguar
CD's. The Swaplist and/or ebay should yield many copies available at
very reasonable prices. Your iBook will thank you for it, and you'll
have far fewer headaches.

If you really want to get Mail back, you might have to reinstall the system.

Actually, if you do a good backup, there really is no reason to wait. If I
was the slightest worried about instability (which thus far I have no reason
to be), I can always just boot from my external FireWire drive into my old
Panther install. Fortunately, I haven't had to do that yet, and Tiger
remains a delight after a full week. Haven't even had to restart my

first gets in the way. In general though I wait, I don't like doing OS
upgrades. I went from 7.5.5 [came with the 7300] to 7.6.1 [once the cds were
shipping that way] to 8.0/1 [when 8.1 was available for download] to 8.5/6
[when 9 come out], skipped all of 9 as I was tired of playing the upgrade
game and nothing I used required it.. I didn't upgrade to OSX until Jaguar
when 10.2.3 was shipping on disc and didn't upgrade to Panther until the
10.3.5 discs were shipping.

Bleeding edge I'm not. I usually only upgrade when an app that I use is
upgraded and requires an OS upgrade. So far I'm safe. :) From the many
reports out there it seems Tiger is pretty stable for a major OS upgrade
though.

filling out a form

2005-05-05 Thread D. Goglin
I'm the guy who asked about over quota on email, and caught a little
flack for asking the wrong kind of question. Sorry, but after a week
of confusion it was you guys that helped. So I'm going to risk asking
another questionable question.
I thought I could fill out a
form with my clamshell ibook much the same as I use too with a
typewriter.  (I'm working with mac os x 10.3.9)  So I scanned the form;
but I can't figure out how to fill it out. It's like trying to type
over a picture. I've probably got over 40 hours into this now and it's
not so much the specific form as it is learning how to do this type of
task. I've even downloaded a trial version of bbedit 8.2. But I'm
lost and it seems I've asked everybody and only gotten blank stares as
a result. Is it possible to do what I'm trying to do? And if so could
someone please tell me how?

Sincerely,
Dennis
P.S. Thanks to everyone who helped with the over quota thing. You
made it simple.

Are you scanning to a PDF? If you upgrade to Tiger you can use text annotation
tool to fill it out. Otherwise, any graphic app that supports layers and has
text tools should allow you to open and put annotation on top.

PDFPen Pro (found on Version Tracker) will allow you to actually make PDF forms
with editable fields, but if you're only doing this for one form, it may not be
worth the purchase price.
