Check to see if the CPU daughtercard is firmly seated in its socket. If it
is, then it is possible that the processor has failed, although that doesn't
happen very often, unless somebody opened the Wallstreet and was not careful
enough.

mythical team of Gestapo-like storm troopers that might burst into one's

either seriously, to underline a claim that a particular style violation is
dangerous, or ironically, to suggest that the practice under discussion is
condemned mainly by anal-retentive weenies. "Dike out that goto or the code

Dead (ish) Wallstreet help ?

2005-05-10 Thread Kris Tilford
I've got a Wallstreet given to me that is somewhat dead. It was working
normally and then one day refused to startup. The power key alone won't
start it. The reset keys combination Shift-Fn-Ctl-Power will get the
green light and fan going, but there is no sign of life in the LCD and
no noise from the HD. The reset keys combo will also shutdown, so
basically the thing is dead except the reset keys combo will toggle on
the light & fan. Any ideas?

Since I've got nothing invested I'm game for some inexpensive parts, I
was thinking about the PMU or the CPU card for starters. I've removed
the HD and tested it as good. I've also removed RAM and tested with
known good RAM with no effect. Help. Thanks! Kris

I would do the following.

Have the express base station connected to the wimax box but position it so
that the stereo can be connected to the stereo port as-well and use that as
the main net distributor, then use the imac and powerbook as normal. And put
the extreme base to connect the imac rev b also put the printer for the
complete network in the same location as the imac B and share it wirelessly.
As the express is 802.G you will not lose any speed over the extreme if you
use it in place of the extreme.

My set up is similar only using 802.b and g mixed.
I have a Netgear router connected to a cable modem No other wires connecting
a g4 sawtooth and a g4 ibook both running panther, also a 3400c powerbook
running 9.1. Just connected in the last two days a g3 imac running X via a
graphite base station the base station is acting as a bridge to the Netgear,
and there is a lexmark photo printer connected to the sawtooth witch all the
Macs except the 3400 can print to. The 3400 prints to a folder on the
sawtooth then it is printed from there. I want to use the imac for this but
at the moment cannot seem to get it to run it is seen but just not able to
print but it will work soon.

Good luck with you home network?

Wireless on Rev B iMac running OS 9.1 & G4 PB

2005-05-10 Thread Dennis B. Swaney
I posted this to the Mac Network list but received no response. I saw
the thread on wireless USB devices on this list and noted that
someone wanted to do what I want to do, so I thought that I'd ask on
this list.

What is the best way to put this machine on a wireless network that
consists of the following:

AirPort Extreme Base Station connected to Internet via WiMax
G4 iMac with original AirPort card
G4 Powerbook with AirPort Extreme card
AirPort Express connected to stereo system.
I know about the following:
USB WiFi connection
Ethernet port WiFi connection
Linksys Wireless Ethernet bridge
Any one of those better than the others?
I would like to do the following:
Connect to the Internet on an as needed basis
Do some file sharing between the PB, Bondi & G4 iMac also on an as needed basis
Lastly, what software would I need for OS 9 to do this?

Update on Dashboard.
I installed Amnesty ( http://www.mesadynamics.com/amnesty.htm ) and now
I am a completely happy camper. I am replacing Konfabulator with

Dashboard IS a toy. I have nixed it and went back to Konfabulator.
Why should I use two hands and press two buttons in order to get
the information that can easily be ready for viewing on the desktop
using Konfabulator?

I use the F12 key to activate my Dashboard. I'm not sure that I like
the implementation yet. I would like the desktop apps to pop up, but
not gray out everything else that I have going on. It's almost TOO
separate from my workspace, instead of being an addition.

I did an archive and install on my machine, after making a bootable

sure...I always let it set for a month or so, just to make sure.

Now this applies only to system level drivers, pref panes, etc.
If all of those are working as advertised, delete it.

I get 3:30 or so from my 15" AlBook 1.25ghz with Airport on and screen about
1/3 brightness. I have since new. Processor is set to automatic.

Re: Bluetooth question

2005-05-10 Thread Stephen Thomas
I didn't intend to become a BT Mouse expert, but I'm picky about human
interface components, and so I've tried quite a number of them for
extended periods of time. Some observations (keeping in mind that mouse
evaluations are always very personal and subjective).

- If one button is your thing, the Apple mouse is hard (naw,
impossible) to beat. It has perfect heft, smooth as silk movement, and
gets decent battery life.

- The MacMice BT is a good aesthetic match for the Mac, but some people
(including me) found it's performance atrocious. It would skip all over
the screen no matter the surface (desk, mouse pad, etc.) and for me was
simply unusable. Many other folks complained of similar problems (check
the forums), but others apparently had no issue. YMMV. It's noticeably
lighter than the Apple mouse and the scroll wheel is completely smooth
in operation (no detents).

- The Bluetake BT500 (sold under many different brands) is very small.
Performance is fine, but it can be fatiguing to use it all day. I find
it to be the perfect travel mouse, though.

- The Bluetake BT510 (also sold under various brands) is bigger, but
not quite as large as the Apple and MacMice. For me, though, it's fine
for all day use. It's also lighter than the Apple mouse, and it goes
through batteries a bit quicker. It also includes a USB cable that can
supply power to the mouse if batteries are dead. The cable is strictly
for power, though, the mouse still uses bluetooth.

My strategy at the moment:
The BT510 is my everyday mouse. About one day a week I switch to the
Apple mouse just to give my hands a break. I keep the BT500 in my
notebook bag as a travel mouse.

The USB dongles are far more portable.

All the ones I've seen need their own power supply, not too portable.
Personally I'd spend the bucks for an Airport card.

BTW, the airport cards I've seen on e-bay are going for $60-80 which
is less than they were originally.

press "Option" and the "Save link/file to " item will

That's wrong. There's no difference between Bluetooth built-in or
Bluetooth via a USB dongle.

There are a lot of cheap wireless mice that have a USB dongle, but
they're not Bluetooth.

Re: Which Powerbook for school?

2005-05-10 Thread Peter Saint James
On 9 May2005, at 11:09 PM, MARIO RAMIREZ wrote:
I'm going off to college soon and want to get a
PowerBook G4 for school. I have about $1000 to spend
and would like the 15" screen. Since there are so many
models of PowerBook, I'm very confused. What's the
difference between TiBooks and AlBooks. What's the
best configuration I can do for $1000. Since it's
obviously going to be used, I was thinking eBay.

You would also be wise to check out Dealmac:
http://dealmac.com/?tmp=1
They have notices of refurbished Powerbooks.
From my experience, I would advise you to look for Aluminum over
Titanium. They seem to have fewer problems. They are a more robust
piece of machinery. Others may disagree. They are both very good.
Assess your needs carefully; you may find that an iBook meets your
needs for much less money. They were designed with students in
mind. Be sure to check out what you can get with your educational
discount.

Other important differences between Powerbooks are fairly
simple. They amount to speed of processor (not terribly significant
unless doing something that requires high speed), amount of RAM (the
more the better), and features such as Bluetooth, Airport, and the
type of optical drive.

Bluetooth allows you to run wireless devices such as keyboards
and mice and sync with phones. In my experience Bluetooth is handy
but not crucial.

Airport allows you to connect to the internet wirelessly; if you
don't get it, you'll probably wish you did. A g card (also called
Airport Extreme) is better than a b card.

A Superdrive allows you to burn DVDs and CDs; a Combo drive only
burns CDs. Usefulness of Superdrive depends on whether you will
want to put that much data on a disk. It's good to have if you don't
have another back-up device. Crucial if you're planning on doing
something like making movies. Otherwise not necessary.

One other feature that may be useful to you is a lighted
keyboard. It's easier to use in sometimes dimly lighted classrooms.
Not crucial, but handy.

You'd be wise to find a used book with AppleCare. Their
portable nature makes Powerbooks vulnerable.

The advantage of a used book is that it usually contains
software that you might otherwise not be able to afford. Take full
advantage of that.

You're looking at a good time. For the past couple of years
both hardware and software have been very good. You're likely to get
a good machine.

Your budget is limited, but not impossible. To get what I
wanted, I had to go over my budget. I have not regretted that. It
was money well spent. Do check out your educational discount. You
may be able to get a new machine with it cheaper than a used one.

Good luck.
Peter

- Are there any such Ethernet-connected wireless 802.11b or 802.11g devices
available? If so, they might be a practical alternative for iBook owners
wishing to go wireless who, possessed of a PowerBook lacking a PCMCIA slot,
are facing rising costs for the ever-scarcer original 802.11b AirPort cards.

that's supposedly the DWL-122 USB adapter. I have tried this one out last
summer and it was causing random and frequent kernel panics on a Lombard
running Panther. I can't recall what version of panther it was. DWL-122
firmware was the latest at that point in time (can't recall the version
either), so were the OS X drivers.

I just reckon they have since replaced it with the DWL-G122, ditching Mac
support altogether.

Nima,
While I understand what you have said regarding your preference for
Konfabulator, I like Dashboard for the opposite reason - I can
access the widgets and then hide them from view in a second. With a
15" PB screen and no external monitor, my desktop space is already
limited so I don't want to have to contend with widgets on my desktop
when I don't use them.

I only have to use the track pad and one button to access them and
then click on the desktop when I'm finished and I'm back to my
regular screen.

Flickering display in Tiger

2005-05-10 Thread Jan Musil
Hello list,
I'm wondering if I'm the only one with problems after Tiger upgrade.
After upgrade to Tiger my PowerBook G4 17'' 1.5GHz with 64MB of VRAM
when connected to 20'' Apple Cinema Display the screen flickers at
random intervals (e.g. goes black for 0.5 to 1 second). I noticed
that this happens only when the PowerBook is closed and I use only
the main screen. When I keep the PowerBook open the problem goes away.

Anybody experiences similar issue? Any known solutions to this issue?
To save you some typing here is what I already tried to no avail:
1. PRAM reset (5 times)
2. Upgrade of ATI drivers
3. Re-install of Tiger
4. Create second user
5. Repair permissions on the volume
Thanks for any help.

Same with AP here. I have a AL BP 800 FW that I upgraded to Tiger.
Was running Panther 10.3.9 and now I get sporadic bars in the menu
bar for reception. I can't tell if the reception is actually less or
just the indicator is messed up. I am also using an Express as a
remote base station upstairs with the AP base station in the
basement. I worked on the Express and base station settings and
changed the channel to 11 on both. Does not seem to help or hurt.
I will be looking for Apple to come out with 10.4.1 soon.

There are at least 2 of us waiting and I hope 10.4.1 will also
address the automatic connection to the network at start and restart.

Greetings, Andre.

My desktop cooler cools better than water. Non exotic, direct to air.

But Apple will not sign my NDA (it's MY invention) and tell me 'we are

How do they know what 'something else' is if they haven't seen what I
have?

The patent system is virtually completely ineffective at protecting
rights of individual inventors.

Re: Battery life under Tiger

2005-05-10 Thread Nima
Some people pay thousands of dollars to go on safaris in order to
taste the Unknown and the Surprising. We can have it right here at
home for a little more than $100. Can't beat that!!!

Put the Cat in the Book

2005-05-10 Thread Peter Saint James

I finally got around to installing Tiger on Monday in my
Powerbook. I learned a few things that might benefit others:

--I used the "upgrade" method, figuring if it didn't work well I
could wipe it off and start over using a different method. It worked
flawlessly. I can't remember an easier major software install. All
except a few settings carried over perfectly. It took a little less
than an hour to install. I tried all the software I can think of and
found it all working without problem.

--When I clicked on Mail in the dock, it bounced once then
nothing happened. I had heard about several people who had problems
with Mail and was concerned. In a fit a genius, I opened a Finder
window to Applications and found two listings for Mail. I clicked on
the newer one and it opened, everything in tact.

--I was prepared not to like the new Mail layout, but putting
the mailbox list in a panel rather than a drawer works better because
it opens and closes easier.

--Spotlight indexed my system at about a gig a minute. I'm
impressed with this speed.

--One of the first things I did was close the security hole by
setting Safari to never open anything it downloads.

--As others have reported, system seems zippier. My monitor
display improved enormously. It's much sharper and brighter with
truer colors.

--Dashboard seems like a toy but an interesting toy, something I
could have fun with. It may even have potential to be useful.

Overall, I like the the improvements. I think I'll get my
hundred bucks worth.

Wireless USB Adapter (802.11b/802.11g) recommendation?

2005-05-10 Thread Stanton Mitrany
I found well priced wireless USB adapters (802.11b&g) by Trendware offered
on Buy.com. I'm wondering if you've had any experience with either of these,
and can recommend whether I buy them to usw with my 500 MHz iBook OS 10.3.9
and my Wallstreet II 233 MHz OS 9.2.2?

The 802.11b unit, Model TEW-229UB, is priced at $18.91 ($8.91 after rebate)
and the 802.11g unit, Model TEW-424UB,is priced at $23.73 ($13.73 after
rebate), with no delivery charge for either one. Seems a good deal on the
surface, but I'm wondering whether they'll work on Macintosh (they're
described only in terms of Windows) and whether I should hold out any hope
that their rebates are actually forthcoming.

All the best,
stanton
