What about with a seemingly DEAD battery in a Lombard ?!?

Nothing to lose, but could it wake it up ?!

Good deal. It's nice when a plan comes together ;)

Is there a noticable difference on a Lombard 333MHz
with 256MB of RAM running FileMaker Pro 7 (in my
dad's case), or 400MHz / 256MB running Real Auido

Are there any advantages with running Tiger if neither

Need tips for using PowerBook as desktop system

2005-05-23 Thread JeanBee
After a few months with my 15 G4 PowerBook, I so rarely fire up the
Quicksilver that I've decided to try to use the Powerbook as my desktop system
on the rare occasion that I need the luxury of my swivel chair and 21 CRT ...

I love how the PowerBook works with the extended display and have been
surprised at how cool it's been running with it... seemingly, cooler than using
the PowerBook alone, though I can't imagine why that is, unless it's been my
lap and not the machine generating the heat all this time :-/ ... I plan to
run an external Firewire DVD-RW (the PB has a combo drive) and an external USB2
hard drive for storage of customer jobs, and have extended AppleCare ...

If anyone here is using a PowerBook like this, I'd love to hear how it's
working for you and any problems or surprises you've encountered. Are you
using USB or Firewire hubs? External drives?

Thanks,
Jean

missing Laserwriter II NTX

2005-05-23 Thread Kristina Rost

I still have my original laserwriter II NTX, just repaired.

I'm on a OS9/G3 beige and a OS9.1 Lombard, or a Dell.

Thanks to Ken here on this list who sent a site/picture, a month ago or
more, correcting me that the II NTX connects as a Serial device.

It is now connected to the OS9 G3 Beige at the serial port,
then via SCSI is an Agfa Scanner,
then with the SCSI I to SCSI II appropriate adapter a Yamaha CD.

Here's the problem
In chooser, AppleTalk on, Laserwriter 8, the NTX does not show up to choose.

What's wrong? I tried fishing around apple's download site, but I just can't
figure it out.

Thanks
Kristina

In your System Folder, in the Extensions Folder, there should be a
Printer Descriptions Folder. Check to see if there is a LaserWriter

Outlook Express: Deleted Items deletion quandry query. . .

2005-05-23 Thread Stanton Mitrany
Hi, Gang!

I'm running Outlook Express 5.0.6 on my Wallstreet II with OS 9.2.2.
Whenever I've purged the messages in the Deleted Items folder (by selecting
the whole contents, and then pressing Delete), although they appear to be
deleted and the Deleted Items folder has become empty, the available space
on my hard drive doesn't increase. This holds true even after a subsequent
restart. Even if I delete, say, 15,000 messages, I don't seem to have gained
even a byte of storage space.

Have you ever noticed this?

Could it be that I should trash some preferences file(s) from the system
folder? The three reasonable candidates seem to be OE 5.0 Update
Preferences, OE 5.02 Update Preferences, and Outlook Express Prefs.

Could there be some cache which isn't getting properly updated?

I'm anxious for a way to regain perhaps 5 gigabytes of storage space I think
should now be available to me on my crowded hard drive. If this is a problem
which affects many Outlook Express users, a protocol for correcting it might
benefit many. . .

What do you suggest?

All the best,
stanton

Launch Outlook Express and hold the Option Key. A dialog box will
appear. Select normal rebuild. This will delete the old messages from
the files. After quitting later, navigate to the Microsoft User Data
folder in Documents Open the outlook identities folder open Main user
and delete the 2 files that begin with Old.

This isn't in the documentation files (or its VERY well hidden). This
works for Entourage users also.

Re: G3 HD replacement.

2005-05-23 Thread Stuart Saunders

Debra,
From my experience, HD replacement in a Pismo is even easier than
this. Heat shield yes, heat sink no, Airport card no, processor no.

It is necessary to remove the aluminium heat (RF?) shield, but leave
the heat sink and processor. You can carefully lift up the inboard end
of the HD bracket (it may need to be squeezed a bit at the inner end),
and you can pull it clear of the body. However, it is still attached to
the main board so be careful not to pull on the cable. Undo the HD
bracket from the drive, (4 torx) then carefully (little by little so as
not to jerk the cable) ease the cable from the drive at its outer end.
Sometimes its not clear where the cable and connector ends and the
drive starts. However about 1/4 inch of the black plastic is the
connector, which comes off with the cable. Then just put the new drive
on in the same position / orientation, and put it all back together.

There may be a small risk to the HD cable this way, but it saves the
risk of removing heat sinks, processors, and airport cards, and also
the HD cable at the main board..

But I'm not a techie. Anybody have any caveats (notwithstanding YMMV)
about this?

Good luck.

TiBook, stripes on screen ???

2005-05-23 Thread Larry le Mac

I have been offered a TiBook 400MHz with stripes on the screen,
there are four vertical stripes on the screen, unevenly spread
of about 1 pixel wide.

I would post a picture if I could, otherwise I will gladly e-mail
a small image off list if anyone who is kind enough to shed some
light is interested in having a look.

My questions:

What is at fault ? The screen, the video card ?

Is it cureable ?

Is it likely to get worse ?

I have to decide by tomorrow lunchtime CET (GMT +1) so I
would be very grateful for any replies.

OK. I tried this, and here's what happened:

1. I quit Outlook Express. Then I relaunched it using the Mail button on
Internet Explorer's menu bar (IE 5.1.7), while holding down the Option
key. A dialog box appeared above the Outlook Express splash screen, which
asked,

Would you like to compact the database? Options available were NO and yes.
I took the safe road and clicked NO.

2. The dialog box disappeared momentarily, and was replaced by another which
read,

Would you like to do a complete rebuild of the database? Options available
were again NO and yes. I again took the safer road and clicked NO.

3. Outlook Express seems to have then opened normally. I didn't see any
option for normal rebuild.

What do you suggest I (and anyone else who'd like to free up some
significant space) should do from here?

Thanks, again!

the 1 GHz actually is the last 15 using such RAM (PC133 SD_RAM SO-DIMMS).
I have also found only 512Mb so far (both in the US and EU). But I'd love to
hear we haven't looked hard enough!

In your System Folder, in the Extensions Folder, there should be a
Printer Descriptions Folder. Check to see if there is a LaserWriter

What is at fault ? The screen, the video card ?

Is it cureable ?

I bought a 400MHz TiBook off ebay eight months ago with two vertical
stripes as you see. It was quite a bit cheaper than those without a
screen problem.

It was from a resaler who moved quite a few various kinds of units, so
I don't think it's easily repaired; they described it as a faulty
screen.

It has not gotten any worse, nor healed itself!

I would also like to know what is the source of the problem.

It is plugged into the printer port.

I accidentaly tried to print a doc, like I thought the printer would work,
and the program 's printer dialog box recognized laserwriter, when I clicked
print the finder error said the doc could not be printed as there was no
desk top printer existed to spool the doc.

does that trigger anything?

Re: Need tips for using PowerBook as desktop system

2005-05-23 Thread Steve Fuller
I love how the PowerBook works with the extended display and have
been surprised at how cool it's been running with it... seemingly,

RW (the PB has a combo drive) and an external USB2 hard drive for
storage of customer jobs, and have extended AppleCare ...

If anyone here is using a PowerBook like this, I'd love to hear how
it's working for you and any problems or surprises you've
encountered. Are you using USB or Firewire hubs? External drives?

I';ve been using my 17 PB like this for 2 years now, using it as a
replacement for a P4 PC running windows. I personally use a firewire
hub and a usb hub to minimize the cable clutter, and because I had
some minor issues with device chaining (I had an external DVD-RW
drive, Isight, and 3 external firewire hard drives, plus an ipod all
hooked up at once). It's worked out quite well for me. I have a small
stand that my powerbook goes on. I leave the long wall cable plugged
in, and attach / detach the AC brick from that as needed when I move
the powerbook around. I don't use an external monitor with mine, but
that would certainly be an option that would work well.

Biggest issues for me were finding a comfortable height/distance for
the PB, and getting the cables ran so that my desk was not cluttered
with them. Other than that, it's worked out well for the last two
years. My PB travels to / from work with me every day so I'm hooking/
unkooking cables a lot, but it's basically 3 cables (firewire, USB,
and power) that get plugged or unplugged.

TiBook power adapter problem ???

2005-05-23 Thread Larry le Mac

Yes, my questions keep coming...

My wife's TiBook 400MHz has now developed a strange
problem where all of a sudden the charger stops charging,
the LED switches off and the PowerBook runs off the battery
until it goes to sleep due to lack of battery power.

When one unplugs and plugs the charger back in again,
it starts to charge. It doesn't seem to be a loose connection
as wiggling the adapter or plug makes no difference, only
unplugging/re-plugging makes it charge again.

?!?

If you have liquids next to your computer, you will eventually have this
type of problem, so don't do it!

It is all so simple!

After the fact no one really knows what part of the electronics have been
effected so one extent of another, even though they seem to function
properly now. I would try to fix it as inexpensively as possible and then
dump it before some other issue comes up and then purchase another laptop.

It relates to being unable to complete the burn due to ERROR 6.

Could any one throw light on the reason for ERROR 6 and what it means as

I thought it may be due to H/Drive space but I have checked this and
there is 3.88 Gb left which should be more than enough for a 700Mb CD.

Have you tried another CD?

Re: TiBook power adapter problem ???

2005-05-23 Thread Michael Levin
Based, unfortunately, on personal experience, you have a slowly dying
power cable. You have about 8 months (give or take) from the when the
problem initially began. To avoid buying an overpriced Apple
replacement part, check web sites for a replacement cable.

Also, my Book has the vertical stripes. Apple will NOT fix the
problem. Again, based, unfortunately, on personal experience.

Just out of curiosity, try running a graphic intensive game. Not a
golf program but something like KTA Tennis or a racing program.
Please et me know, off list, if anything happens to your screen.

Did the TiBook use the same AC adaptor as the iBooks? The iBook adaptor
problems resulted in a class-action lawsuit, and the owners with failed
adaptors get $35.

You can't uninstall updates. Once they are installed, this means that many
system files are patched and there is no way to unpatch them and make them
like they were before the update. The only way is to re-install.

Re: TiBook power adapter problem ???

2005-05-23 Thread Larry le Mac

From: Michael Levin [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Based, unfortunately, on personal experience, you have a slowly dying
power cable. You have about 8 months (give or take) from the when the
problem initially began. To avoid buying an overpriced Apple replacement
part, check web sites for a replacement cable.

When you say power cable, which part do you mean ?

My adapter only has the psu with cable and the plug that
plugs into 230V, not the long mains cable.

???

---
Also, my Book has the vertical stripes. Apple will NOT fix the problem.
Again, based, unfortunately, on personal experience.

The stripes are on a different TiBook, yet unseen and possibly
to be bought (400MHz, 256MB/10GB/DVD 900SEK a bit over $100)

You will need to replace the unit that runs from the Book to the
adapter. On my unit, the cable from the adapter to the electric plug
works fine. Because I dawdled on buying a replacement cable, I had to
shell out $85 for a replacement Apple power cable. Hence, I have 2
units that have the long electric plug but only 1 cable that runs
from the Book to the adapter.

On the bright side, I unplug the cable at the adapter source and put
the Book and the adapter into my bag because I keep one long electric
cable at the house, one long electric cable at the office, and the
plug only in my bag (just in case).

Re: TiBook power adapter problem (update)

2005-05-23 Thread Larry le Mac

I only seem to be getting replies relating to the hardware,
specifically crappy cables, but that does not explain why
it only stops charging when the PowerBook is asleep.
When it's running or off, it charges quite happily.

I have read on the net about this only being an OS X
issue and not OS 9, though this PowerBook doesn't have
OS 9 installed (might do it just to see though).

So, anyone have any thoughts on this not being a broken
cable type problem ?

Re: Need tips for using PowerBook as desktop system

2005-05-23 Thread bee

Been using my Ti500 as desktop system for over 4 years now.
2 firewire hard disk and 1 burner daisy chained. Use a
Matias tactilepro keyboard with a Microsoft wirelss mouse.
Recently hooked it up to a 20 in. Dell display works OK, but
there is not enough video ram to run screen savers in iPhoto.
Oh, well, guess I need a new PowerBook, other than that it
has served me well. The DVI on the Dell is hooked up to a Mac
Mini, so I switch back and forth PowerBook VGA to Mini DVI,
even have a video recorder hooked in to the S plug, so I can
switch to the TV also or use P in P. All the wires are a nightmare
though. Love these PowerBooks.

Mac OS X.3.9 on Wallstreet 233MHz?

2005-05-23 Thread macnifico

Hi, Listers!

I'm getting a Wallstreet with a 6 Gb HD, 288 Mb RAM, and 233 MHz G3.
It's going to be used mainly for light Web browsing, and a few Excel
spreadsheests. Nothing processor-intensive.
I was wondering if OS X.3 would run OK on this machine, or if I should
stay with OS 9.2.2. I have OS X.2, too. But I've grown acustomed
(spell?) to OS X.3.9, it runs very well in my iMac 400 MHz with 320 Mb.

Thank you for your input.

Its going to be slow, but what do you expect. I am quite surprised
how well my G3/300 WS2 runs 10.3.9. Using XPF you might have to
fiddle a bit if you get the Purple Panther Problem, but its solvable.

Both would have 250 Mhz cache parts. I am not sure what ratios you
can select, so its likely the G4/400 would run at 200 Mhz. If I
could get a 3:5 ratio, I could run at 240 Mhz.

Runs great on my WS I/292, with only 162MB. I think about how much
better it would be if it could support more memory, but I've had some
issues with larger memory. The sound of broken glass at startup with
two different sticks that work in other computers. It did this with
the original processor, too, a 233 like yours. I think that the
processor upgrade would be worthwhile if you really like Panther more
than Jaguar. This comp had issues with Jaguar; it ran more slowly,
wouldn't wake from sleep, and it had some serious video issues
(screen would turn blank, for example, or it would 'melt'). The
upgrade to Panther fixed all those issues, but ran slowly until I
upgraded the processor, not that it's blazing fast now, mind, but it
runs quite well for my needs.

Probably the G3/500. What is the speed of the backside cache?

 -Laurent.

Both would have 250 Mhz cache parts. I am not sure what ratios you
can select, so its likely the G4/400 would run at 200 Mhz. If I
could get a 3:5 ratio, I could run at 240 Mhz.

Have you checked XLR8YourMac.com for readers' reports about accelerator?

BUAG // n.: [abbreviation, from alt.fan.warlord] Big Ugly ASCII Graphic.
Pejorative term for ugly ASCII art, especially as found in sig blocks. For
some reason, mutations of the head of Bart Simpson are particularly common
in the least imaginative sig blocks. See warlording.

busted iBook

2005-05-23 Thread Russell Kerstetter
I tripped and fell on my iBook causing it to no longer function. Upon
disassembly, I discovered the HD to be *bent* and shattered. In
addition to that, the logic board is damaged as well. The damage is
restricted to one IC which is located on the bottom of the board
near where the HD ribbon attaches. What has happened is while the IC
has remained attached to the board, the top of the IC popped off.

I do not know much about IC, esp. how physical alterations will affect
performance. If there is anyone in this group that does, your advice
will be greatly appreciated.

What I would like to do is blow it out to remove the moisture/dirt,
and then glue the top back on. Is this possible or am I sol?

Thanks.

Russell

Re: Mac OS X.3.9 on Wallstreet 233MHz?

 HD

Is it the Wallstreet without the L2 cache? Running 9 on a cacheless
system is bad. X would be glacial. Swap central. No X.

What size screen does it have? If it's the 12 then it only has 2MB of vram.
Don't run X on that. The screen redraws will be terrible. If it's a 13.3 or
14.1 screen then you would have 4MB of vram. A bit better, but not much.

I would stick with 9 on that machine. My buddy has a 500Mhz Pismo and it
runs X ok. A bit pokey, but it goes. Possibly the Wallstreet users will be
able to give you a better idea on how X is running.

Good luck,

Re: Another Opinion wanted

2005-05-23 Thread themacuser
Someone will probably disagree with me but I say go for the G3 if you
want to use Jaguar or the G4 if you want to use Panther. Panther is
more G4 optimised...

If you want to use Photoshop or apps like that, go for the G4..

Unless the apps you are going to use have been optimized by Altivec,
iTunes

for instance, go with the G3. The extra 100Mhz will make more of a
difference in most operations. Plus it runs cooler.
