Re: Synchronizing Treo 650
How timely. My wife has been pestering me for a Treo for sometime. I wouldn't let her buy the 600 because the 650 has WAY more bang for the buck But Verizon didn't want to start selling teh 650 until recently. Anyway, I bought one... And then the joy of getting it to work with her ibook G4 began. Bear in mind... she's a long time Palm user (as am I) and already had Palm software installed on her machine. However, it wasn't new enough to support the 650. You have to update to the version of Palm software that ships with teh CD. No biggie there. Now, lets get this out of the way first... Palm says Mac is supported with the Treo 650. Verizon says Mac is supported with the Treo 650. Call Verizon support and see if they say the same thing They told me it wasn't. Luckily, I know enough about what I'm doing that I only needed minimal information from teir tech support and was able to guide them to the information i needed... For the most part, everything will be fine with your Treo 650 and the Mac. There are a lot of features though that just popping in the CD and installing won't give you. (Pop the same CD into a PC and you'll get all kind of options.) The main piece we had trouble with was VersaMail. My wife wanted to be able to send/recieve email. Well, VersaMail comes wiht your Palm... sortof. Verizon recompiled Palm's install CD to make it their own and in doing so left out a LOT of the functionality for Macs. In fact, their own instruction manual (Verizon's) says Mac users will have to install VersaMail from the CD... But try to do that from a Mac... you can't. They didn't incorporate a Mac installer. I had to take my wifes Treo 650 upstairs, hook it up to my PC, pop the disk in and install VersaMail from there. After that, it would sync and work fine from her iBook. I was able to get mail to recieve, but not send. After quickly looking at the unit, I determined it was becasue she was sending over verizon's network, so our home ISPs SMTP Server setting wasn't working. Solution... I needed a SMTP server from Verizon. Called Verizon support... first mistake, my wife tells the lady she's running this on a Mac. Tech tells her this isn't supported on a Mac. (Verizon Doc says otherwise). She tried to explain that her problem was irrelevant to whateer operating system it was running on, but tech wasn't getting it... She finally gave me the phone in disgust. I finally determined that not only did the tech not know mac, they didn't know the Treo 650 either... only the 600 (which runs a different version of Versamail with far less features.) After holding the techs hand and leading her through all the settings in Versamail (wait, isn;t that her job??) She finally gives me the SMTP server name I need. Of course... she gave it too me wrong. I had to figure that out for myself. But all in all, i got it working. Since the, my wife LOVES her Treo650. I'm even impressed with it, although I'm a graffiti guy and the 650 doesn't allow graffiti... just input from the mini-keyboard, which my fat fingers don't like :-) Why did you decide to get rid of the Kyocera and go with the 650? How much do you want for the Kyocera? I might be interested. Email me off list (about that or if you need more help with your 650, I'll be happy to do what I can.) Sionnach __ Discover Yahoo! What a concept. :) Yes and no. MS doesn't dictate hardware or system architectures. So long as drivers are there MS windows could run on anything. However, they also don't *help* Intel build systems, which is Welch's point. The potential exists for some really fruitful collaboration between Apple and Intel that will move both their products ahead. This will trickle down to the Windows world, Intel knows who buys MOST of their chips after all, but Apple will get first use of them, meaning Apple WILL be able to say 'we're faster than any Dell', and Apple will get a chunk of what Intel makes selling them, too. This, however, is a generation or more down the road. We're talking 2010-era stuff now. Buy single torx drivers at Sears. T8 driver is all you need for the Pismo and a small phillips head screwdriver. A T6, T7 and T9 are nice to have on hand for the Wallstreet powerbook. The take-aparts from www.pbfixit.com are very good. Re: RAM for Powerbook - best not cheapest
I'd like to max out the RAM on my Powerbook (15 / 1.5GHz). http://www.crucial.com/store/ListParts.asp?mfr=Applemodel=PowerBook +G4+1%2E5GHz+%2815%2Dinch+Display%29 lists them at $211 per 1GB. I'd like to buy from Crucial because I've had good luck with them, but wonder if others have had good experience with another vendor that they would recommend. I don't want to go cheap-over-reliable. I buy all my memory from Data Memory Systems and have never had a problem. They've gone more than the extra mile with folks here, exchanging three SO-Dimm's with one user before they found out that *their* compatibility info was wrong for that model (A gateway laptop, not a Mac). They ended up refunding his cost and giving him the RAM. I've heard good things about TransIntl.com. Mike Breeden of xlr8yourmac.com fame used to work there (iirc) and still has them as a major advertiser. I've order most of my Macs' RAM from them over the years, though did grab some for my Beige from OWC with my power supply order this week. TransIntl ain't necessarily the cheapest, but so far so good. Ruffin Bailey -- This message sent by an unregistered version of The Digest Handler. Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!
Hello All, I just had to add one more thought on this subject, and wanted to see if anyone agrees. After reading all the input from this invaluable list group, and listening to the radio (Leo Laporte has said some VERY interesting things when it comes to Apple moving to Intel on AM 640), and reading all the relevant articles in mags I have come to a very logical and realistic conclusion: The proverbial gap between PC's and Mac's will not change. In fact, I honestly think that NOTHING will change at all. Call me an optimist, but the only thing that's going to happen besides faster Macs overall, is that one day a PC user will be going over to his/her old friends house who happens to be a Mac user and that Mac user will tell his/her PC user, hey did you know that my Mac has an Intel designed processor? The astonished PC user will just be that. . .astonished. Then they'll go about their business. I expect nothing more, nothing less. Macs will still be just above PC's, PC's will still dominate the business world, and Mac's will still dominate the design world. Anyone agree? Or is everyone leaning on Laporte's side saying that this move is a stake in Apple's heart Zoltan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Synching Treo 650
For those with a Treo and a Mac, you may want to check out The Missing Sync by Mark/Space (www.markspace.com), which goes a lot farther than the Palm software and integrates nicely with iTunes and iPhoto. Also for Mac Treo users, check out the discussion forums at www.treocentral.com , there is a forum called Mac and Treo where we all share our ideas and experiences. Re: Lombard snags [signed]
I aplogize. Is the ban on service manuals infinite ie is there a cutoff point for age of model? I took my Lombard to a local Mac shop and they wouldn't try to repair it saying they can't get parts anymore. = Mike Amato mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Laurent Daudelin [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 16/06/05 21:03, Michael J.
