The newest version can do both FTP and SFTP (older versions can do only regular FTP). Both have a nice drag and drop interface and have worked well for me. Of course, there is also a client (actually, two!) already installed on your mac: the Finder and the Terminal. The Finder, in my experience, can be a little bit shaky but is in principle the most logical thing to use. Just click Go-Connect to Server and enter the server url. It should be of the form ftp:// something.com If all goes well, you'll have a volume on your desktop just like any other and you can just drag the folders you want to your mac (but, afaik, not the other way around, as the ftp volume mounts as read only). Lombard installation woes with OS 10.2 and up
Dear fellow listers, My 400 MHz Lombard is giving me a headache. With the 64 MB it came with it ran fine under OS 9; upgrading to OS 10.3 is a nightmare, though. With its 64 Megs of RAM, installing 10.0 and 10.1 is no problem, however it's too little for anything over 10.1. Therefore I purchased both a 128 MB and a low-profile 256 MB RAM chip (from different manufacturers). However, in whatever configuration (128, 192, 256, 320 or 384 MB), or in whatever slot, the Lombard crashes during installation . Sometimes it gets pretty far along the process, sometimes things go awry almost immediately. I really don't know what to do next other than asking whether one of you has a 128 MB or 256 MB chip that has proven to allow installation, AND is willing to sell it. I don't know if you follow any of this, but evidently both MS Intel write code to make their servers work slower and less reliably with other manufacturer's hardware. This is one of the main contentions in the AMD-Intel lawsuit that's ongoing. Nothing to do with Intel. Nothing to do with hardware. MS modified the standard html handshake that occurs between your browser and their web server product. Essentially, they changed one packet and eliminated another - streamlining the connection process. If the browser recognizes this modified exchange quickly (only IE does) then the server is able to establish the connection faster and marks it as being with IE. If the browser doesn't recognize it (not IE), then after a time-out, the connection is established normally. This time-out has the effect of making non-IE browsers seem slower. (Remember that your browser may open multiple/dozen connections to a server, based on your preference settings). Depending on how the server administrator sets things up, they can lock out non-IE users at that point or they can slow down others, or they can prioritize IE users, or ... well, many things :) While this may seem like a sleezy tactic on MS' part, it should be noted it's all controllable by the local server administrator. - Dan. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Sometimes it gets pretty far along the process, sometimes things go awry almost immediately. Wallstreet and Lombard both have problems with certain SODIMMs which have two banks. Usually, the worst that can happen is these will be read as one-half their actual capacity as these actually are composed of two banks. Pismos will read these as their correct capacity. When buying 128 or 256 MB SODIMMs for Wallstreets or Lombards be sure the seller guarantees these to work on Walstreets or Lombards. If PC100 or made from high density SDRAM chips, or if PC133, these may or may not work properly. PC100 or faster of just about any organization (density or number of banks) will work in Pismos. Large profile 256 MB SODIMMs usually work fine in Wallstreets and Lombards. The machines are smart enough to figure out the refresh by themselves (CAS latency 2 or CAS latency 3, etcetera), but except for Pismos, these have problems with high density SDRAM chips and/or two bank SODIMM sticks. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Specifically, failure of the drives to properly negotiate down to the lower AT specification expected, and required by the Lombard and the Pismo. Again, which means what ? It runs slow ? It doesn't work ? The machine will lock up, and fail to get past the flashing icon. Initializing the drive in another machine (BW, for example) and then putting that drive in an affected PowerBook won't work as the affected PowerBook will not auto-negotiate and, therefore, cannot read the boot code off of the drive and into the FLASH ROM on the motherboard. This affects certain new world PowerBooks (Lombard, Pismo, and possibly others), which read the boot code off of the drive and into a FLASH ROM before proceeding to do the actual Mac OS boot. The last old world PowerBook (Wallstreet) appears to be OK. I presume the first G3 (Kanga) is OK, too. Strangely, the first new world desktop (BW) is OK, but the first few new world PowerBooks (Lombard and Pismo) are not OK. Further, all currently listed Hitachi/IBM and Fujitsu models are also compatible. This is found on their web page ... http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6858Item=TOSMK8026GAX Note that OWC does not sell Samsungs, and so far it has not been selling the very latest Hitachi/IBMs, so its warning, above, couldn't (and doesn't) include the warning I have previously stated, based upon my actual testing of the affected PB models, and Hitachi/IBM and Samsung drives. Again, if 10 GB or under, and if older 20 GB, you should be OK. But for newer 20 GB, and for larger than 20 GB, be sure to get a return privilege, or a guarantee that the drive will work with your Lombard or Pismo or other newer PB. For that matter, be sure to get the same, if you have a Wallstreet. In general, I believe the real problem is an incompatibility with early new world PBs and certain newer HDs, not older HDs or old world PBs. OWC has stated the problem from the perspective of the specific drives which it currently sells, not from the general case of all drives which are made, and which might possibly be installed in an affected model PB. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Besides, the other programs allow you to put files on the remote host as well. (it's sad, because this is possible. Netscape 4.0 allows 2-way ftp transfers; making it a very nice ftp client. linking Wallstreet and Albook with ethernet?
Hello all. My father in law has decided on a new 14 iBook and needs to get stuff from his old Wallstreet II (300 Mhz OS9) to the iBook (OS 10.4?). I suggested the external USB drive case for the WS hard drive but he wants to keep the Wallstreet as a backup computer (even though it has a broken hinge). The iBook doesn't have SCSI so he can't boot the WS in target disk mode. Could he boot the iBook in firewire mode and use a firewire PC card to mount it on the wallstreet? We'd need to find him a firewire card for the wallstreet. Could he connect the two computers with an ethernet cable? It would be slow but we could do it with existing ports. Do you need a crossover cable or a regular one? Any links to tutorials? Thanks Andrew -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I've now tried another screen pulled from a working unit. It also doesn't work. Since the ribbon cable comes with the screen they both got swapped in the process. As such, I'm inclined to think the trouble is elsewhere...perhaps internal to the powerbook? Alternatively, is there any way to test the screens separate from the powerbooks to be sure they are good? Not sure about the Ethernet port sensing on the iBook. I know that this started appearing with some Titanium PowerBooks but don't know if and when it made it on the iBook line. The FireWire path is the fastest, though, but the network one is definitely the cheapest if you only have to buy an Ethernet crossover cable. I would first try with a regular Ethernet cable.
