Re: Safari problem ?

2005-12-04 Thread John Siple

Amber,
Since this is both a Mac and a Safari problem I suspect the keyboard
input. Safari is cooperative with various language inputs. In fact
it's really neat that us Mac users can set our whole operating system
displays to read and write in Japanese or German or any number of
other alphabets.

Go to the International prefs panel and check that you have set your
input for U.S., not U.S. Extended in the input section. Review other
input settings like the order of language preferences. You might want
to uncheck foreign languages except U.S. and see if that helps with
the password problems.

Then go to the appearance preferences in Safari and make sure you
have checked Western ISO as your default encoding scheme.

Things change.

The amount of protection you get from those things is actually
limited, but it's better than nothing. there's a definite inside and
outside to the protection you get, and things can and will reflect
around. I needed to get very good protection for a piece of lab
equipment once, and I read up on everything at that time (much gone
from memory now) but long story short, to get really clean(ed) power
that keeps internal and external issue clamped down, you want a line
conditioner, and you are spending many thousands of $.

The home equipment is good to have, but far, far from perfect.

Macs and eBay

2005-12-04 Thread Amber R.

Hi,
This is partially related to my previous question. It appears that
eBay is not really that Mac friendly. In fact, in a discussion with
one of their live help people today, I was told if you were using a
regular computer, you would be fine when I was asking about the
sign-in problems I was having.

I was told also that I needed to update my browser..although my
browser is Safari and I have the latest version.

Anyway, it appears that some of the problems I am having are related
to my not using a regular computer and not having an up-to-date
browser that works with some sites.

I have had an eBay account almost since its inception. Over the

browsers (now mostly Safari), all with no problems. For sellers who
prefer to use Macs, there is an excellent auction program at:

Ebay like many companies on line is PC anal and they are big enough that
they don't care if other platform users are having issues with their site. I
find Safari to be much slower on ebay than Firefox and the last version of

I've come across several websites, including one for one of my jobs
where we report daily activity, that Safari wouldn't work with--kept
getting a system error when trying to log on. I switched over to
FireFox--and haven't had a problem since.

I now do all my browsing with either FireFox or iCab. If I didn't
need Safari to be on the 'book for some internet settings (I found out
from this list--you have to set your default browser, even if it isn't
Safari, IN safari. Go figure.), I'd probably nuke it from my system.
It just doesn't seem to be as compatible as you'd think it'd be.

Safari just does not support things that well. When I started using

I've had some minor issues with eBay, but nothing that would create any
big problems. I use Camino, and in the preferences (extra download) you
can use agent spoofing to fool sites into thinking you are using a
different browser. I rarely use it, but some sites will not work at all
without using say IE for Windoze.

Take care.

It's an extension for Firefox. Just search for it on the extensions
page. Safari also has this option if you enable the Debug menu by
typing this line into Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

To turn it off, you simply type:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 0

You mentioned that you have a keyboard problem. Someone suggested

What's very interesting in this whole browser discussion is that the
Web Standards Project has a test online to see how standards
compliant your browser is. Guess what? Explorer fails miserably no
matter what version, Camino 1.0b1 is about half way there, Firefox
1.5 is close. iCab 3.52 and Safari 2.0.2 are the only two I've used
that pass.

Take the test here:

http://www.webstandards.org/act/acid2/

That said, why would the problem lie with the browser? Why wouldn't
it be the page's fault for not conforming to standards?

You mentioned that you have a keyboard problem. Someone suggested

I've used Firefox and Mozilla for years on ebay with no problems. I
did have some minor problems back in the days of OS 8 but not since
then. Firefox is an excellent browser and you may want to try it. I
have both Safari and Firefox on my PB G4 running OS 10.4 and I rarely
use Safari.

Hello Harry,

The thing about this situation is that I was having really no
problems with this site or any other until about a week ago.

eBay seems well aware of the problem with the missing t's in their
live chat. Typing in all caps resolves it. I have been able to
list numerous items with photos on Safari, on eBay, with no problem
for sometime now. However, in the last week, it has suddenly become
very problematic.

I have changed my eBay password, emptied the cache, dumped Safari
preferences, reset Safari, tested the keyboard etc etc. Still don't
know what the problem is but am going to try Firefox and iCab and see
how they work for me.

Thanks for your reply !

I use eBay with no problems. Tech support is woefully ignorant.

you're back to keyboard/input problems. Make sure that you don't have

Check in international settings for US/English.

Try opening a new text document and type each key to make sure they

Hi Peter,

The primary problems I am having are password refusal and repeated
return to the sign in page. Sometimes I can't sign in at all even
though just a couple hours earlier, I had used the same user name
and password. It's very frustrating - especially when I have some
auctions running and more to list and I can't access them without
going through this ridiculous sign-in routine whereby I have to enter
my user name and password over and over again until it catches.

I assure you there is no typing error on my part either.

I will be setting up an auction listing and hit continue and then it
will take me back to the sign-in page !!

I am indeed running 10.4.3 and just installed the most recent
security update which is supposed to address Safari related problems
amongst others. Apple Software update is not listing any others.
Which ones were you referring to ?

As I mentioned in my other note to the list, all of these problems
just started occurring a week ago but I have not installed any new
software at all.

Hi Shawn,

LOL - While this is a terrific analogy and very favorable towards the
Mac, I can assure you that this individual was intent on trying to
prove that Macs were quite inferior to PC's. To follow your Gasoline
analogy, he was referring to Mac's more as dirty diesel and PC's as
Gold/Premium.

He seemed to feel that their PC programmers were completely incapable
of making eBay work on Safari and suggested I upgrade to Explorer 6.0.
I immediately informed him that changing to Explorer in any shape or
form would be a DOWNGRADE and that as I understood, Microsoft stopped
working on Explorer for Mac after version 5.2 because of the popularity
(and superiority) of Safari. There was a fairly long silence after
thisthen he said he was glad that he could be of assistance today
and asked if there were any other questions.hm

Amber

I'm a PC admin, as well as one of only a handful of Mac users in my
area, but I can tell you that even the best PC is still worse than the
worst Mac. I know, I own a PowerBook 190, which is generally considered
to be a Road Apple, that ran OS 7.5.2 until only recently. That's beside
the point, though. My point is that many support types are too dumb to
support Mac users because nobody uses them. I still remember the
headache I had when calling my ISP to setup the 190 on my dialup account.

Try using Firefox is all I can suggest. I use it on my PC, as well as
having setup FF on my Grandpa's OS X machine. I'd run it on mine, but
the Lombard won't be in until tomorrow. I'd go ahead and install either
the SafariFox or iFox skin from the start, to get the beautiful Safari
look, though.

Amber,

New idea: download and run a utility called DoktorKleaner.
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21470

Its a shell script that runs various repairs based on your current problem.
It has 4 or 5 repair scripts just for Safari.

I am just curious about a couple of things :

1. On many websites, again when using Safari, when I try to enter
my postal code, it will keep coming up as just 6's and 1's.
2. On the www.westjet.com site (airline, using Safari, it simply
does not seem to allow you to use the drop down menus for entering
dates to book on-line. Since this is the only way you can enter the
dates, I have to use a different browser.

Why is Safari unable to deal with these seemingly basic entry
tasks ? Is there a simple answer?

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion regarding FireFox - it seems to be
quite popular so I'm going to give it a try now.

Just tried it it worked fine for me. Though if it's the only way
for you to enter dates, we may be looking at different pages; on the
page I tested, you can also click on the little calendar icon to the
right of the date, and then click on a date in the pop-up calendar.
That also worked for me.

I'm using 10.4.3 with the latest Safari. So I don't think Safari is
the problem here (or at least the only problem). In fact, Safari
fails to work so rarely that I don't even remember the last time it
failed. Oh, except it and the Mozilla-based browsers all used to
give a java error when I tried to refill pr*scr*pt**ns at my
insurer's online ph**m*cy, but that's been fixed.

(In Safari I have the debug menu activated, and the user agent
automatically chosen; I may once or twice have changed it to IE for
a site.)

Hi Shawn,

I thought I knew how to do this but then realized they were referring
to something different when I went to try.

I found this FAQ though.

I use Onyx, but other utilities also give enabling/disabling it a GUI
(Safari Enhancer is the main one), and I just saw someone posting the
terminal command to implement this - wasn't it on this list?

Oh, yes, just found it in my trash - in the Macs and eBay thread -

Safari also has this option if you enable the Debug menu by

Re: further info re: password recognition on websites

2005-12-04 Thread Concetta Z

Amber,
I think they are two unrelated problems.
The missing t scenario happened to me a couple of weeks ago with Live
Help.
The tech said to use all caps almost immediately, like he was used to
this thing happening.

I do not have the problem with Safari passwords that you describe.
Concetta

Hi Caleb,
It's strange because all of this started happening about a week ago
and has been getting progressively worse since. I have emptied the
cache and reset Safari. I called my ISP and they told me that they
felt it was a problem involving entering secure sites. I can't find
any new Java updates.

The other strange thing is that when I use eBay live help, I cannot
type in lower case as the t key will not show up at all. I can
only type in all caps to alleviate this problem. However, the eBay
guy told me this is not uncommon with Mac users.
Thanks for your suggestions !
Amber

Yes..no matter what date I choose...it keeps coming up as a 1 only.

Airport Card doesn't show up

2005-12-04 Thread B.L.
Good Evening fellow listees;
I have a small problem with my Airport set up on my Lombard.

First of all any Airport compatible PCMCIA card I put in the PCMCIA slot
doesn't show up in the network pane as an Airport card, in fact in the
network pane under network status Airport doesn't show as an option at
all and I know these cards are good because they work in my Powerbook
3400 to connect wirelessly to the internet using a Graphite Base
station, as does my BW using a PCI Airport compatible card.

Secondly I can't get the Airport SetUp assistant to recognize the cards.
The one card I got to show up showed as an Ethernet Adapter Card en1 or
something like that, so the slot seems to work to a degree.

This is all on a Powerbook Lombard 128mb ram/OS 10.2.8/6gig harddrive
a 400mhz processor. Yes I know if I had more ram and a larger harddrive
things might be a bit better but money is funny right now and so I have
go with what I've got.
Would someone and could some one point me in the direction to fix this
problem or will I have to go back to OS 9.2.2 on this machine.
Thank you in advance for any and all help

Amber,

I don't recall seeing which PB or iBook you are using,

You mention problems with the t not showing up - I

 Hi Peter,

The primary problems I am having are password
 refusal and repeated
return to the sign in page. Sometimes I can't sign
 in at all even
though just a couple hours earlier, I had used the
 same user name

 when I have some
auctions running and more to list and I can't access
 them without
going through this ridiculous sign-in routine
 whereby I have to enter
my user name and password over and over again until
 it catches.

I assure you there is no typing error on my part
 either.

I will be setting up an auction listing and hit
 continue and then it
will take me back to the sign-in page !!

I am indeed running 10.4.3 and just installed the
 most recent
security update which is supposed to address Safari
 related problems
amongst others. Apple Software update is not
 listing any others.
Which ones were you referring to ?

As I mentioned in my other note to the list, all of
 these problems
just started occurring a week ago but I have not
 installed any new
 software at all.

I have this with my Powerbook - but first it was the q that had

it hitting something when it doesn't work. And if I hit one corner

Hello Barry - Sorry, I am using a 1.25 ghz 15 PB - running 10.4.3
and Safari 2.02.
The problems are mainly with sites that require entering any sort of
text information and some drop down menus. The t key works fine
in Word and text edit etc...it's just that this keyboard seems to be
a bit quirky. i.e. a few times now, the entire keyboard has suddenly
become inverted - i.e. with caps lock key on, the letters are all
lower case and with it off, they are all upper case. No rhyme or
reason behind it...it just starts, then stops with no clear reason as
to why.

I am not sure this is related to the Safari thingwho knows.

Anyway, thanks for your reply,

Re: Airport Card doesn't show up

My Airport compatible Orinoco Gold also doesn't show up
under 10.2.8 in a Wallstreet. Problem is, Apple didn't build
in the drivers for these compatible cards. You will need to
install something like the IOExperts driver to use these cards
under OS X.

Yes, some wireless cards, like Orinoco, that are Airport compatible under
Classic are not Airport compatible under OSX. When a friend obtained an OSX
10.2 Wallstreet awhile ago, it would not use my Lucent Orinoco wifi card as an
Airport card, like my 9.2 Wallstreet could.

Also, some cards that are Airport'able under OSX are not under Classic (most
recently I discovered that the Sony/Ericsson GPRS card is one of these).

Any card with the Broadcom chipset (SOME of the cards/adapters by Belkin,
Buffalo [what my friend now uses in his 10.2 WS], Linksys, Sonnet, among
others)
will be seen as an Airport card in OSX 10.2 and up.

Hi Tim,

I guess just don't understand what is wrong with this PB then. It
was working fine up until a week ago and then suddenly - all kinds of
problems. This is exactly how the keyboard inversion happened - out

Netware on Lombard

2005-12-04 Thread Caleb Cupples
I've got a Lombard 400 with OS 9.1 and OS X Jaguar, and I'm wanting to
know if there are any good free ways to connect to a Novell Netware
network. My school network is running Netware 6.5, with most of the
client machines running versions of Windoze from 98 to XP Professional.
To clarify, there are only two Macs in the school, and those are a
PowerMac G5 and an iMac G5, both of which are running OS X Tiger.

Any ways y'all can think of to hook up?

Thanks in advance,
Caleb

Have you tried the actual Netware client?? If they have a site
license, it comes with the 9.1 client. I used that at the local
univ. and the Netware setup in the medical college, about a year ago,
9.1 on my 1400/g3. Worked fine. Not sure of versions, the PB1400 is
not accessible at the moment or I'd fire it up and look.

Stanton,

You can schedule them to begin whenever you want but eBay charges a
small fee for that ability if you list them through the website on
the spot. With eBay software, you can prepare the auction listings
ahead of time and then have them automatically upload when you're
ready. This is great when the 10 cent sales roll around like the one
tomorrow on eBay.ca.

I think Garagesale does this - I just learned about it from another
member here when we were talking about this Mac/Safari problem.

Take care,

Amber

Dear Amber,

The last time I checked with eBay I was told their software which could
provide the ability to store a seller's listings prepared all week long, to
all go live on a designated day and time was a feature only available to
those accessing with their site with Windows platform browsers/computers. I
was further told that they were unaware of any software which could provide
this enhancement for Macintosh users.

Further, when I visited the Apple store in Emeryville, CA in October, for
the express purpose of finding such a program, I consulted with the Mac
Geniuses there, who suggested iSale and GarageSale. When I looked at the
package of the one carried by the store (iSale, I believe) and also read
reviews the Geniuses referred me to of both of these packages on-line while
I was in the store, I ended up returning the iSale to the shelf, and not
seeking to acquire GarageSale either, since neither seemed to be able to
ably do what I'm describing- at least without dramatically limiting the
content you could include in your postings. I believe the limitation which
most discouraged me here was not being able to have more than perhaps three
or four rather small photographs per posting, if my memory serves me
correctly.

Bottom line is that I went home and got myself a used PC (which I'm
beginning to learn to use) just simply (but importantly) to acquire the
ability to have my ads all begin and end at the one time each week which I
feel is most advantageous to me.

Again, I'm hoping the information I gathered then was wrong, or that this
shortcoming to the Mac eBay applications I mentioned here have now been
augmented to provide this feature.

Many blessings,
stanton
