I'll second the motion for Unison, I have used it for about two years

quirks and weirdisms than the others, and is seems more stable than the
average usenet reader.

Gotta agree with Laurent. I've been using MT-N for years without

If you press "Option" after rebooting and hold it down, you should be
presented with icons of various hard drives connected to your Mac that can
boot. Use the mouse to select the one you want to use and then click the
right arrow button.

HOWTO Boot Powerbook from Firewire drive

2006-01-05 Thread Lists

So I've been using SuperDuper to make a bootable backup of my
Powerbook (15" 1.5Ghz)

It works great.

At least, that is, I think it does.

Truth is, I don't know if it would actually boot if I needed to, and
now that I've Googled around a bit, I can't seem to find out for sure.

The closest I've found is this:

"Command-Shift-Option-Delete bypasses the disk selected in the
Startup Disk control panel in favor of an external device or from CD-
ROM (on older Macs). This is also useful if your main hard disk is
having problems and you need to start up from another device. (On
some PowerBooks, however, this key combination merely ignores the
internal drive, which isn't as useful.)"

I'd like to find something on Apple's website. I tried searching
there and had no luck there either.

It's not the sort of thing I'm want to try without a little assurance
I'm on the right track.

Re: MacInTouch Survey of i-Books and PowerBooks

2006-01-05 Thread Michael Levin

On Jan 5, 2006, at 6:02 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Bruce has pretty well summed up the problem with the survey.

Actually, it is an issue with all surveys other than those surveys
that rely on student samples. Students usually receive bonus points
or participation points for completing surveys, and, thus, are
externally motivated to complete the survey. Other than that
instance, respondents are motivated by internal factors. Emotions,
positive or negative, are internal factors. If I really love the
product line, or the brand, then I want to tell the world about my
emotion to the point of obnoxiousness. Conversely, if I really
despise the product line, or the brand, then I want to tell the world
about my emotion to the point of obnoxiousness.

However, if like the vast majority of customers, I really do not
possess strong emotions positively or negatively about the product
line, or the brand. Thus, I am very unmotivated to complete a survey.

If there is an inducement such as my church or my philanthropy gets a
$1 for every completed survey, or my name goes into a drawing for an
iPod, then I more likely to complete the survey then if there is no
reward. However, this issues takes us back to external motivation.
Yes, survey results are called into question when a reward is used.
Are the results valid? Is there a bias? How can you be sure the
results would be consistent if there had been no reward?

Generally speaking, these are some of the inherent problems with
surveys as a research methodologies. Researchers look at nonresponse
bias, which is what Bruce essentially refers to in his post. One top
marketing academic journal pretty much eschews survey research.
Almost all economics journals do not publish surveys, which is
laughable. Some psychology journals as well as consumer behavior
journals are moving towards experiments only, which have their own
methodological issues.

I am not privy to the questionnaire, how the data was collected, what
analysis was used, etc. If I had to guess though, I would wager that
the survey would not pass academic review. Just a hunch.

Agreed. When you charge a premium for the product, tell your customer
that the warranty does not cover any defects (and besides the issue
is obviously user related wear and tear and not piss poor
manufacturing and/or design), then you should either A) expect your
customer base to become irate or B) stand behind your warranty. Apple
*appears* to opt for the first choice. At some point, Apple became
the Mercedes Benz of the computing world (or did Mercedes Benz morph
into the Apple of the automobile industry?).

Have you tried just resetting the router? This may help if you bought
it used. Usually there's a little button for that somewhere.

If resetting it doesn't work you should go through the configuration
screens to make sure it's not set to have a fixed IP address and that
it isn't blocking connections via mac address or connection speed or
any of the many ways wireless routers have to block intrusive
connections. You may be able to do this if you don't have the
original manual by just typing 192.168.1.1 in the URL field of
Safari while connected via an ethernet cable. That used to be the
default ID of Linksys routers. The default password was just linksys,
no caps. the default user name was blank (no name).

Hi Caleb,

I just bought a Linksys WRK54G... the one that comes with the
notebook card. Folks seemed skeptical of Linksys, but their products
have been rock solid for me for over 7 years now. All Linksys
equipment, 'cept for one D-Link PCMCIA card.

ANYway if your AP is used, has the configuration been changed to
something unusual? Have you tried to use the Reset button to restore
factory defaults?
I've found the Linksys routers to always work on my network with all
the out-of-the-box settings.
For different reasons, I use DHCP and static IP addresses and the
routers just deal with it.

After much trial and error - I settled on Unison and paid the fee!

Well worth the money - you get a free trial so you can test it thoroughly first

Some on here will wax lyrical about Hogwasher (wouldn't load, then
crashed) and MacSoup - couldn't get on with it at all

No flames please! We're all entitled to our own opinion. The thing
about a lot of the other readersis that they try to be mail progs
well. I have Mail for that and if I want heavy duty stuff to talk to
work I have Entourage (courtesy of work)

Pineapple News is worth a look but still in development and has no
filtering yet. Plus the kill file and hyperlinks only work once you've
paid. Not so good if I shell out and they don't work.

YMMV

Others will no doubt give their opinions

Good Luck!

Bruce has pretty well summed up the problem with the survey. The site is
largely visited by people who have problems - it is therefore predisposed to
hear the bad and not the good. It's like going to the Apple Discussion
Groups; go there looking for information about the computer you are thinking
of buying and you'll walk away thinking they are all lemons.

The larger problem however is with the very nature of the computer industry
and Apple's dependence on style and coolness, not to mention that fact that
the consumer buys into it. Every couple of years Apple throws away a design
and starts over. New motherboard, new custom chips, new case, new power
supply, new cooling system...you get the idea. I think we all understand
that new designs will have problems that won't turn up until the factory
starts cranking them out and large numbers of people get them. It takes a
while for the manufacturer to identify and fix production problems and for
the designer to recognize flaws and fix them. These issues aren't
indications of quality control problems - they are built the realities of
manufacturing.

Re: Testing internal modem

In the Remote Access control panel, turn on verbose logging. That
way you can view the transaction between the PPP module running the
modem script and the modem's responses.

If you see from the log that the script is totally unable to get a
response from the modem, then it might be fried.  Try reseating it;
sometimes that fixes.

You can also try using an old fashioned glass terminal / serial
telecom application to talk to the modem directly (issue various AT
commands).

Testing internal modem

2006-01-05 Thread Stuart Hart

Hi,
I have a wallstreet 233 for my brother and have tried to get it working
via the internal modem.

Every time I try I get a message that says that the is not responding.
I have to check its corrections etc.

I have reinstalled 9.2.2 and use the right modem scripts (internal
modem v90, or v34)

Nothing works.

Here in my house with a wireless network I can surf using the
wallstreet and an orinoco silver card without any problems. In his
house he will have to use the phone line.

Can anybody tell me how to test the internal modem?

Is this a symptom of PRAM going bad?

Not the PRAM itself. But some of the symptoms could be caused by a
dying PRAM battery.

I don't know. It might work if you pre install XpostFacto (assuming
you are talking about 10.3 here).

Anyone else on this one for a series II Wallstreet? It didn't need
XpostFacto to install OS 10.2.8, being officially supported by Apple.
I'm hoping to get OS 10.3 from Apple with the iLife suite on DVD
($54) but won't be able to use the DVD on the Wallstreet unless I can
clone it from the G4... (lots more $ for the CD with ilife)

Thanks again

I have installed 10.3 on my Wallstreet with the help of XPostFacto and
it worked well after working out two hitches that were known at the
time.
One was related to the colors on the screen (a lot of purple :-)) and
was solved by removing a specific file (don't remember exactly but the
issue was well documented).
The other was the lack of built-in support for the ejection of cardbus
cards (solved by downloading a kext that someone had prepared).
After that, it has been working strong ever since and is now running
10.3.9 (using just the regular Software Update feature for all updates
since the initial install).

Fixes for the above mentioned issues may or may not have been
incorporated in later versions of XPostfacto - i don't know. I do know
that some people have even put Tiger on Wallstreets, but I chose not
to, because I have 4 macs running Tiger now, and my Wallstreet is
working great as it is.

Airport card sporadic cutoff disconnect fix 10.4.3

2006-01-05 Thread Kris Tilford
I have a couple iBooks that developed bad Airport connections
recently. They sporadically would go "off" and not find any networks,
and then just come back "on" full strength for no apparent reason. It
appears the cause is that I mistakenly installed the Airport Update
2005-001 which was meant for Airport Extreme 802.11g cards only, and
not for regular Airport 802.11b cards. It appears I may have solved
this issue by uninstalling the Airport Update 2005-001 using OS X
Package Manager (OSXPM) available as freeware here:

I don't know about the Pismo, but, based on my Lombard experience, yes,
it's a dead PRAM. Try booting into Open Firmware and typing
'reset-all'. That could help a lot.
